BuzzJack Music Forum _ Movies and Theatre _ Least Favourite Disney Animated Classic Round 25

Posted by: Acidburn 21st January 2016, 02:30 AM

Welcome to Round 25 of Least Fave Disney Animated Classic and the latest one to go is "Sleeping Beauty" which received 11 votes, and has come close in the last few rounds, but now has finally left us and finishing in 9th place. Released in 1959 as the 16th Walt Disney Animated Classic and based upon 2 books, "The Sleeping Beauty" by Charles Perrault and "Little Blair Rose" by The Brothers Grimm. This would be the last Disney fairy tale for many years due to it's original disappointing box office run and mixed critical reviews. But again through re-releases it eventually gained success with a lifetime gross of $51.6 Million and Disney would return to the fairy tale princess genre with "The Little Mermaid" in 1989.

A live action re-imagining was released in 2014 starring Angelina Jolie as Maleficent and Ellie Fanning as Princess Aurora, which earned mixed reviews but became a massive success earning over $758.5 Million worldwide, becoming the 4th highest grossing movie of that year.

As for the other Disney movies there are 4 of 4 for each era, 4 from the original golden age and 4 from the renaissance era. "Alice In Wonderland" gained 4 votes, while "The Jungle Book" and "Beauty and the Beast" both gained 3 votes each. "The Lion King" gained 2 votes, while "101 Dalmatians", "The Little Mermaid" and "Aladdin" each gained 1 vote each. "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was the only one not to get any votes in the last round, making this the 22nd round to do so.

09th Sleeping Beauty = 11 Votes

Another great Disney classic that has always stood out for me, mainly due to it's wonderful and evil villain Maleficent of course. But seeing it again as an adult I can fully appreciate it more, like in the way it's animated, it's just beautiful and fully developed way to incorporate a really stylized background and middle ages-influenced characters to blend in with an environment that used a very specific colour palette. Oh, and it was drawn/filmed in 70mm. Even Malefcient's castle was astounding and creepy and that bit where Prince Phillip fights her as a dragon, just blew me away it was nuts. I don't care what people say but I've always liked the characters Aurora and Phillip, I thought they were very likeable and decent, and even the 3 fairies were just fun and carried the picture really well, but of course it's the villain who steals the show here as she just stole every scene she's in and makes the whole thing an enjoy to watch. So in all everything about this was just perfect and can see why it's so loved and cherished throughout the years.

So now we are down to just 8 movies left, same rules apply just vote for your least fave by the next round and the one with the most votes will be voted out. The next round will be on January 24th.

'The Jungle Book' to go next and I'll be very happy with what's left!

All bonafide classics that deserve their place in the top 10 so tough one, going with Alice in Wonderland - it looks great and is impressively dark for Disney, but also somewhat jarring and not one I have much of a connection with in comparison to the rest of the top 10.
