Just out of curiosity, who would you say is the worst driver to ever have raced in Formula One and why?

A contender would have to be:

Yuji Ide

He was in Super Aguri for four races in 2006, where he was mostly behind Takuma Sato his team-mate. Qualified last in three out of the four races he started and retired. He was even 3.3 seconds down on his own team-mate in qualifying in Australia. He was very slow indeed. The last straw was an very ambitious move on Albers in San Marino which caused Albers to barrel-roll. He then had his license revoked by the FIA.

Definitely Luca Badoer. Qualified at the back of the grid in a competitive Ferrari & holds the record for most starts without finishing in the points.

That's unfair. He hadn't raced for 10 years before stepping into the Ferrari and only did so because regular driver Massa was injured and the back up (Schumacher) was too. He was unfamiliar with the car and the track.
Secondly he would have scored 26 points under the current scoring system and was often saddled with poor peforming teams. He wasn't great but there have been far worse.

Michael Andretti stands out for me as being terrible (ok in Indycar, bad in F1) as did Andrea De Cesaris (or as he was known De Crasharis)

James Hunt was a big fan

I'd forgotten about Super Aguri, god they were shit.

I dont rate many of the stream of pay drivers that F1 has acquired over the last decade but I don't think many are as shit as Ide. His teammate Sato was f***ing shite as well.

Crashtor is well up there in the list of pay drivers who shouldn't be allowed a road car license never mind a super license. Completely shite.

Most Minardi drivers in their last few years fit this category (Alonso & Webber excepted). Alex Yoong stands out as the stinkiest among them, even failing to qualify on several occasions due to being more than 107% off the pace.

Gaston Mazzacane was pretty awful if memory serves me correctly, probably one of the worst drivers to end up racing for more than 1 team. Why Prost signed him I have no idea, but given that he only lasted 4 races for them, they cut their losses pretty quickly.

Yes, Mazzacane. He was very bad indeed.

Another person to add is Ricardo Rosset for this:

This was very bad indeed. At 1:32 listen to Murray Walker's question and then Brundle's response. Apparently the team mechanics switched the R and T over on his pit-board after this. I remember he also drove at full speed in that infamous pile-up at Belgium in 1998.

Taki Inone just doesn't look like an F1 driver.

I would say Gutierrez should be included. Never looked like a F1 driver at all.

Worst driver to win a race, I would say Maldonado.

That was an awful move from De Cesaris.

BUMP

A pay driver from the 90s in Jean-Denis Delatraz in the mid 90s, an memorable pay driver for the wrong reasons.

A very strange move there. Does anyone remember a website dedicated about bad drivers called F1 Rejects?
