Fourth single to be lifted from Ray of Light, 'The Power of Goodbye' was one of the earliest creations for the album, having been written by Rick Nowels and produced by Patrick Leonard prior to William Orbit reworking the song when he was brought in to take the album in a new musical direction. The song acts as lyrical follow-up to 'Frozen', revealing the strength and freedom found in letting go of a relationship. Orbit delivers another compelling production, carefully layering electronic beats, guitars and orchestral strings to reflect the peaceful and relieving tones of the lyrics, whilst Madonna demonstrates her improved vocal range in a confident but refined manner.

'The Power of Goodbye' was a hit around the world, helped by the fact radio stations were eager for it to become a single. In the UK, it peaked at #6 upon release, having been bubbling under the Top 100 on strength of imports, and was recently certified Silver for sales of over 200k. It peaked at #11 in the US, missing out on a Top 10 placing due to its maxi-CD never materialising there.

This song remains an album highlight, even considered by many as its very best. 20 years to the date of its UK release, share your thoughts and memories of this Ray of Light gem.

Love the song and video (i can remember reading that Madonna and the video director clashed a lot during filming).
Would love this to be on the next tour although Madge didnt sing this song too well on during its only live performance.

It is the only song on ROL that William Orbit disliked. This made Madonna like it more apparently.

"Fun" fact: the lyrical booklet actually uses the demo lyrics by including the "Walk away" line.
