Chart Commentary
Another week, another new #1, and for the third week out of a possible three in 2017, an artist scores their first #1. Christopher and Ed Sheeran have nabbed their first EVER #1s so far this year, and now it's the turn of Daniel Skye, a 16 year old singer from Hollywood. Daniel scored his debut chart hit only last year with We Got Us, his final independent release before being signed to RCA Records. We Got Us peaked at #9, but he bettered it with the next three singles - Smile and No Party made #5 while Good As It Gets made #6. His most recent track, Last Call, failed to make much of an impact, and only got to #25, but he makes up for it with ON, which climbs to #1 in its first full week, up 30 places. ON seems to be his first proper single push with RCA, so maybe it will see him break through into the UK charts too?

It was a close battle for the top spot this week, and just losing out is Joel Adams, who finally followed up his debut hit Please Don't Go last week. Die For You is his new single, released only via Bandcamp so far (hence its absence from my Spotify playlist), and while it doesn't match the #1 peak of Please Don't Go yet, it climbs 19 places to a respectable #2, with the chance of going even higher in the future.

He made his chart debut last week with first single Candle, and this week, Spanish singer Manel Navarro scores his second top 5 hit in as many weeks, as Do It for Your Lover catapults up a huge 35 places to match the peak of its predecessor. Candle takes a dive of six places down to #11 this week but Do It for Your Lover is likely to have a much longer chart run, particularly with it being in the running to represent Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest this year!

2017 05 Do It for Your Lover | 2 | 40-5-... (2+ weeks)
The fourth and final new track in my top 10 this week comes from American EDM duo The Chainsmokers, with their new track Paris. It becomes their third top 10 hit, fifth top 20 and sixth top 40. They made their chart debut in 2013 with one of their earliest releases, Erase, featuring Indian singer/actress Priyanka Chopra, although my favourite these days is 2016 #5 hit Don't Let Me Down, with vocals from Daya. Most vocals on Paris are sung by Chainsmokers member Andrew "Drew" Taggart, although additional vocals are provided by Emily Warren, who achieved a #1 hit with Frenship on Capsize last year, and reached #2 more recently with Lost Kings on Phone Down. She does not gain a credit on Paris however, so it does not count to her chart history.

Also this week, British singer/songwriter The Beach (pictured) scores his second chart hit. Bite My Tongue is new at #12, which means it fails to beat the #6 peak of debut hit Geronimo, but nevertheless it's a solid debut for a great track! Halsey also gets her second chart hit as a lead artist, with her peak being #22 with New Americana. She did, however, make #20 with The Chainsmokers on their song Closer. Not Afraid Anymore is new at #37 this week.
The remaining three new entries all come from artists scoring their debut hits. Indie pop duo Nightly are new with XO at #19, singer/songwriter Julia Michaels is at #25 with Issues, and boyband New Hope Club make their debut at #34 with Perfume. Expect Perfume to climb more next week, it made #34 having been available for just hours when I compiled this chart! More on them next week.

Hi Joseph
Daniel X Joel battle this week. I think I prefer Die For You.
I don't love Chainsmokers but Paris is really good.
I love Not Afraid Anymore. Shame it's not a big hit.
Good chart
Heya Seph!
Glad to see both Daniel Sky and Joel Adams reach top 2
Yay for Jax Jones climbing and The Chainsmokers entering with 'Paris'. Both great dance songs
The Beach track was very good!
I am also loving that Halsey track too
Issues is good too and ofc Heaven is
Great Chart
Nice to see Paris enter highly, I hope that can be a long running hit officially Also like the new Halsey song - shame it appears to be somewhat flopping in the Charts

24. Nathan Sykes - There's Only One of You - 29-20-24- This didn't stand out to me when I listened to the album but having heard it a few times since, it's actually a great single choice, and I'm not surprised it's doing (reasonably) well for him. Lovely song!
26. Tom Odell - Silhouette - 4-4-8-9-10-11-17-26-
27. Zara Larsson - I Would Like - 34-10-15-16-13-13-19-27-

36. Sia - Move Your Body - 38-36- What? Just a TWO place climb?!? I demand Top 30 next week at the very least!
37. Halsey - Not Afraid Anymore - 37- This sounded alright on first listen, definitely has potential.
38. Machine Gun Kelly & Camila Cabello - Bad Things - 37-23-26-32-36-38-
40. Troye Sivan feat. Betty Who - HEAVEN - 13-17-25-37-X-37-X-8-7-11-17-23-30-X-40-
Good stuff!
Hi Joseph
Only heard your BJSC entry once so far but it did sound pretty good!
Paris I'm still not sure on yet, they're a chart force nowadays to go straight into the top 10.
The Julia Michaels & Halsey songs were both decent, I imagine the latter will be an eventual chart hit when the film is out.
Great stuff
Hi, Joseph
Manel
Castle On The Hill dropping
Drops drops drops
Hi Joseph!
I like both of Ed Sheeran's new songs but I'm just not as into them as I feel I should be - 'Castle on the Hill' has such an energy that would usually be right up my street. To be honest, it's always been the case with Ed's music and I can never put my finger on what it is that puts me off. It doesn't help that I know I'll end up sick to death of his songs when they get inevitably overplayed, as I've found I've always had more lasting impressions on his not quite as big songs like 'You Need Me...' or 'Bloodstream'.
'Paris' does take influence from 'Closer' - it feels like a more chilled version with a similar style vocalist to Halsey (I had to look it up to see if it was her singing actually) - but it does seem quite catchy for now; perhaps has the potential to grow.
Great to see 'Heaven' re-enter - it's received a really powerful yet somewhat underplayed video and I think everything works together so well. The song itself holds the ingredients of the perfect pop song with its ability to put forward an important message, dressed in short and sweet pop hooks and remembering to have a catchy melody as its basis.
Thanks for the comments everyone, I'll endeavour to return the favour this coming week! My new chart is coming very soon ~
