Jackson Browne settled his lawsuit against US Senator John McCain and the Republican Party after his 1977 hit Running On Empty was used without permission in a 2008 McCain presidential campaign ad that aired on TV and the Internet. Andrew's Review
Now That’s What I Call Music! 73 aka Now 73 was the penultimate volume released in the Noughties. Featuring 44 tracks with 8 UK #1 singles, this volume went on to be the #1 compilation for some 12 weeks in total. It was at this time we received music from La Roux, Chipmunk, Pixie Lott, The Veronicas, Agnes, Pitbull, 3OH!3, Florence + The Machine, Little Boots and Deadmau5.

This was a good era for omissions, in that very few Top 10 singles were omitted. The noteworthy artists that got omitted included Paloma Faith, Arctic Monkeys, Enrique Igleasias, Miley Cyrus, Alexander Rybak, Eminem and Just Jack amongst others.

Those artists whose only sole appearance in the entire series was on this volume included A R Rahman, Keri Hilson (as a lead artist) and Empire Of The Sun.

Artwork Rating: 5/10 Poor
Despite the bright and vibrant colours on this volume’s artwork, it’s really very rushed and shows a real lack of originality. What appears to be palm branches in the background is obscured with nonessential party glasses and shades depicts a summer theme with little thought.

Disc 1 Favourite: David Guetta feat. Kelly Rowland – When Love Takes Over
Just the best song David Guetta ever made, just such a feel good summer anthem and Kelly’s blissful vocals make this one of the best dance songs of this millennium! I could literally listen to this song all day long.

Disc 2 Favourite: Deadmau5 & Kaskade – I Remember
Such an atmospheric song. As an enthusiastic collector of chillout music at the time, I fell in love with this single instantly. Amazed that it charted high and got featured on this volume.

Disc 3 Tracklist:
(A concept of what a third disc might look like if other hits from the era were used)

1. Eminem – We Made You 4:46 {4}
2. Jamie T – Sticks ‘N’ Stones 4:00 {15}
3. Arctic Monkeys – Crying Lightning 3:43 {12}
4. Green Day – Know Your Enemy 3:10 {21}
5. Franz Ferdinand – No You Girls 3:41 {22}
6. Linkin Park – New Divide 4:28 {20}
7. Oasis – Falling Down 4:20 {10}
8. Just Jack – Embers 3:28 {17}
9. VV Brown – Shark In The Water 3:04 {34}
10. Tommy Sparks – She’s Got Me Dancing 3:29 {22}
11. Frankmusik – Better Off As Two 2:55 {26}
12. Marmaduke Duke – Rubber Lover 1:56 {12}
13. Pet Shop Boys – Did You See Me Coming? 3:40 {21}
14. Enrique Iglesias feat. Ciara – Takin’ Back My Love 3:50 {12}
15. The Pussycat Dolls – Hush Hush; Hush Hush 4:11 {17}
16. Keri Hilson feat. Timbaland – Return The Favor 3:40 {19}
17. Alexander Rybak – Fairytale 3:02 {10}
18. Paloma Faith – Stone Cold Sober 2:54 {17}
19. Lenka – The Show 3:55 {22}
20. Take That – Said It All 4:15 {9}
21. Miley Cyrus – The Climb 3:52 {11}
22. Jade Ewen – It’s My Time 3:17 {27}
----------
Total time: 1:19:46

Overall Rating: 8/10 Extremely Good
Faultless volume really, there’s so much quality across both discs. The quantity and quality of this penultimate 00’s volume are both right up there, and there’s not too much from the missed omissions that stood out. The most impressive feat this volume achieved was being #1 in the compilation charts for a total of 12 weeks.

Andrew's Best 5 (as of February 2018)
1. David Guetta feat. Kelly Rowland – When Love Takes Over
2. Deadmau5 & Kaskade – I Remember
3. La Roux – In For The Kill
4. Lady Gaga – Poker Face
5. The Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow

Andrew's Worst 5 (as of February 2018)
1. 3OH!3 – Don’t Trust Me
2. Shontelle feat. Akon – Stuck With Each Other
3. James Morrison – Please Don’t Stop The Rain
4. Ironic feat. Chipmunk & Elton John – Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer)
5. Pixie Lott – Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh)

Not a huge fan of the artwork although the colour scheme is pretty. I feel the sunglasses are too big and in-your-face, but there has been way worse covers tongue.gif

Disc 1 Top 5:
1. David Guetta feat. Kelly Rowland – When Love Takes Over
2. The Veronicas – Untouched
3. Cascada – Evacuate The Dancefloor
4. La Roux – In For The Kill
5. Lady Gaga – Poker Face

Disc 1 starts out strong but kinda fizzles out towards the end, Battlefield is really nice but I can't say I hadn't forgot about it until just now tongue.gif Lily Allen, Calvin Harris, Tinchy Stryder, Pink, Katy Perry, Girls Aloud also Disc 1 highlights for me

Disc 2 Top 5:
1. Beyoncι – Halo
2. The Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow
3. Ciara feat. Justin Timberlake – Love Sex Magic
4. Dizzee Rascal & Armand Van Helden – Bonkers
5. Florence + The Machine – Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)

Disc 2's gems are spread out a little more although there are quite a few songs here I could easily forget they ever existed. Daniel Merriweather, Pitbull, Kasabian, Empire Of The Sun, Deadmau5 are other Disc 2 highlights.

Overall not a particularly bad Now! album. There are some really high high's with David Guetta & Beyonce but also many low's. I think that is more due to the songs charting at the time though, rather than the Now! selection as shown by the omissions which are also not too great. Green Day, Linkin Park, and Miley Cyrus are the only singles I would've added

First off, this is definitely one of the worst Now artworks ever imo, so cheap and gaudy looking, so gave it the 1 out of 10! sad.gif

Went with David and Kelly's dance anthem for disc 1! My highlight at the time and now was Kelly singing i-e-i-e-i-e-i going up and down the musical note scale!

Release Me is such a close second, amazing song imo, so nostalgic to hear now!

I like a lot of the other songs from disc 1 though. The ones I like are I'm Not Alone (wasn't much a fan of this at the time, but it sounds great now), Beautiful (another nostalgic sounding R&B ballad), In For The Kill (which I prefer to Bulletproof), Number 1 (wasn't a fan at the time though I don't think, preferred both Tinchy and N-Dubz's later 2009/early 2010 songs like I'm Not Alone, Playing With Fire, We Dance On), Evacuate The Dancefloor (which I liked at the time iirc), Let's Get Excited (also liked this one iirc), If U Seek Amy (think I liked this one too back then for its quirkiness and dance pop style), Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh) (liked this at the time, what an excellent debut for Pixie) and Up All Night (good fun Take That tune which I liked at the time (my mum had The Circus album).

From disc 2 which is much weaker imo, my standout fave is The Noisettes - Never Forget You. Great 60s style soul song, way better than Don't Upset The Rhythm imo, which I don't like and find a little annoying. Knock You Down is a close second, one of the best R&B/rap combination songs of the turn of 09/10 imo (there were a lot).

Beyonce - Halo I absolutely loved at the time, one of her best tbh. I like Chicane - Poppihola, I thought was refreshing at the time, to have just an instrumental making the top 10. Bonkers is fun from disc 2, it reminded me of the Audio Bully's We Don't Care a bit too at the time in terms of style, which was on a Lucozade advert around that time. Fire is good from disc 2, the second last big indie anthem of the 00s, the last being on the next Now volume.

Wouldn't Michael Jackson's 'Man In The Mirror' be an omission too? Or are you keeping that for the next volume?

Anyway great work on these, I really do enjoy reading these threads.

Here's my Top 5:-

1) Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone
2) David Guetta feat. Kelly Rowland - When Love Takes Over
3) Florence & The Machine - Rabbit Heart (Shake It Out)
4) Kasabian - Fire
5) Chicane - Poppiholla

At first I was, but then a week or two after his whole back catalogue made the charts following his death and so because there were so many to choose from, I opted not to include them. sad.gif

Can't remember hearing Miley Cyrus' Hoedown Throwdown, must listen now, but it sounds like from the title its going to be awful.

EDIT: OK on listening to it, its not great but not quite as bad as I thought it would be!

First now I ever got so this has a lot of memories. This came with a few music videos I remember- Not Fair and Kiss Me Thru The Phone were them I think. Please Don’t Leave Me and Never Forget You are my faves from each album as I revisit them loads but I have so many favourites scattered all over the album although particularly on disc 1 (Release Me, Jai Ho, Work, New In Town)

My Disc 1 favourite is Calvin Harris - 'I'm Not Alone' which is only surpassed in quality by 'Acceptable In The 80s' when it comes to his discography wub.gif For Disc 2 I chose The Black Eyed Peas - 'Boom Boom Pow'! That was such an idiosyncratic lead single but totally paid off.

Disc 1 top 5:
01. Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone
02. Agnes - Release Me
03. Lady Gaga - Poker Face
04. A.R. Rahman & The Pussycat Dolls feat. Nicole Scherzinger – Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)
05. Girls Aloud - Untouchable (would be higher if it wasn't the autotuned radio edit!)

Disc 2 top 5:
01. The Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow
02. Deadmau5 & Kaskade – I Remember
03. The Prodigy – Warrior’s Dance
04. Kasabian - Fire
05. Dizzee Rascal & Armand Van Helden – Bonkers
