Sometimes, there are songs with so much star power behind them that failure simply isn't an option. Belinda Carlisle's Heaven Is A Place On Earth is undoubtedly one of them.

Released in December 1987, the track quickly became a global smash and reached Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart the following month, where it remained for two weeks 35 years ago.

Belinda wasn't exactly a household name in the UK at the time - she'd had success in America as the lead singer of the The Go-Go's - but her solo star was on the rise. After the all-female rock group called it a day in 1985, Belinda had scored a Top 5 hit in the US the following year with her solo debut, Mad About You.

But it wasn't until a year later that things really took off for her worldwide. For her second album, Belinda teamed up with then little-known songwriters Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley (Rick is now one of the world's most successful songwriters), who collectively wanted to shed her '60s-influenced sound in favour of '80s power pop.

Adding extra beef to Belinda's vocal was an array of well-known stars on back-up: as well as Rick and Ellen, the track features Michelle Phillips from the Mamas & The Papas and prolific hit songwriter Diane Warren, giving the song's chorus an almost hymnal quality.

At the helm of the song's elegant if slightly eccentric video was renowned actress Diane Keaton. Nonetheless, it created a new, more glamorous image for Belinda, whose look had come a long way from the one-time punk band who for a period wore bin bags on stage.

Heaven Is A Place On Earth spent two weeks at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart in January 1988. It has shifted 701,500 copies to date (pure sales) and racked up 53.5 million UK audio streams, according to Official Charts Company data.

Belinda went on to score a further 18 Top 40 singles in the UK, six of which reached the Top 10, but Heaven Is A Place On Earth would be her only Number 1. Check out her complete UK chart history here.

Elsewhere on the Top 40 this week in 1988, Pet Shop Boys' Always On My Mind - 1987's Official Christmas Number 1 - was at Number 11, and UK dance group Krush were down one spot with their only chart hit House Arrest (Number 4).

Also in the Top 20 were Terence Trent D'Arby's signature hit Sign Your Name at at Number 2, while Tiffany's pop classic and future Number 1 I Think We're Alone Now was up 10 to Number 3.

'Heaven is a Place on Earth' sold 485k in the 80s, so 217k of its sales come from downloads. It was certified Platinum in March 2022 for downloads/streams of 600k, 26 months after being certified Gold, meaning it was shifting an average of 1,754 units per week. Total sales should stand at about 1.160m to date.

In October 1997, Danish-Norwegian Europoppers Aqua claimed their first-ever UK Number 1 single with Barbie Girl. Spending four weeks at the top spot, and a total of 27 weeks on the chart, most had assumed (or possibly hoped) René Dif, Lene Nystrøm, Søren Rasted and Claus Norreen were one-hit wonders. Surely they were destined for the pop graveyard alongside Teletubbies, Partners in Kryme and the like?

Well, not quite.

On February 2 1998, Aqua found themselves back at the summit with follow-up Doctor Jones; ending Usher's one-week reign with You Make Me Wanna....

The fourth single lifted from Aqua's debut album Aquarius, Doctor Jones debuted at Number 1; beating Will Smith's Gettin' Jiggy Wit It (Number 3) and Aaron Carter's Crazy Little Party Girl (Number 7) as the week's highest new entry.

To date, Doctor Jones has shifted in excess of 779,000 UK chart units - including over 590,000 physical sales and just shy of 17 million UK streams.

Deserved.

You can catch Aqua performing their biggest hits at Mighty Hoopla Festival 2023, taking place at London's Brockwell Park on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 June. More info here.

Elsewhere in the Top 20 this week in '98, All Saints' former Number 1 smash Never Ever slipped two spots (4), while Saint Etienne were a brand-new entry with Sylvie (12). CeCe Peniston's cover of Somebody Else's Guy also impacted the Official Singles Chart (13), as did Puff Daddy & The Family's It's All About The Benjamins (18).

Aqua's enduring Barbie Girl also spent its 16th week inside the UK Top 40, down three spots (34).

March 25 2015: a date we'll never forget. One week after dipping out of One Direction's On the Road Again Tour, Zayn Malik officially left the group citing a need for 'some private time.'

Fast forward 11 months to February 2016, and Zayn Malik is back. He now goes by ZAYN (all caps, very edgy), is dating supermodel Gigi Hadid and returns armed with a monster debut solo single.

PILLOWTALK - written by ZAYN and produced by M.I.A. and Sia collaborator Levi Lennox - saw him shed his boyband past with a few swears and a saucy music video to boot.

But was it enough to see him beat off competition from former bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan?

Released on January 29 2016, PILLOWTALK found itself fighting it out against One Direction's final (for now) single History.

Having first charted in November 2015, History had been creeping up the Official Singles Chart ever since. Could it prove competition for CAPS LOCK ZAYN in the Number 1 race?

Well, no.

PILLOWTALK stormed straight to Number 1 in its opening week, at that point becoming the fastest-selling single of 2016; boasting 4.97 million streams and 112,000 combined chart units.

Meanwhile, One Direction's History slipped to Number 9 in its ninth week on chart.

To date, PILLOWTALK has racked up over 1.4 million UK chart units, including 133 million UK streams.

Elsewhere on the Official Top 10 this week in 2016, Jonas Blue and Dakota's cover of Fast Car rose one spot to its peak (2), while Rihanna and Drake's Work vaulted nine into the Top 10 (4). Justin Bieber was doing alright for himself, too. Both Love Yourself (5) and Sorry (7) remained Top 10.

It was a big week for Lukas Graham, with 7 Years jumping 18 spots (6), as Craig David and Big Narstie's When The Bassline Drops broke into the Top 10 for the first time (10).

Jokes about Sugababes' revolving door line-up aside, the trio in whatever incarnation they were in always delivered a killer album lead single, didn't they?

Overload (2000), Freak Like Me (2002), Hole in the Head (2003) and Push the Button (2005) were all notable pop moments of the early Noughties, with three out of four topping the Official Singles Chart.

When it came to their fifth album header, it seemed the only option was to go big, teaming up with hit songwriter Cathy Dennis (Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue) on About You Now; a slick piece of electro-rock-pop that presented the group in a new light. Fitting, given that they were in the early stages of their third lineup change after the recent appointment of Amelle Berrabah to replace Mutya Buena.

The track was a huge hit, charging to Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart on its second week when it was made available to download, selling 34,000 copies. It had debuted at 35 the previous week on physical sales alone, common practice at the time for single releases during the handover in formats.

About You Now spent four weeks at the summit, something no other girl group has managed to achieve since, though Little Mix have come close on two occasions: Black Magic and Shout Out to My Ex have both managed three weeks at the top spot.

To date, About You Now has notched up 1.25 million UK chart units, split between 480,000 downloads, 78,000 physical sales and 77 million streams.

About You Now was to be the last Number 1 for Sugababes - the closest they would come again was in 2009 with (the distinctly less timeless) Get Sexy, the group's final single with the only founding member left Keisha Buchanan, who was ousted in time for their next single, About A Girl with replacement Jade Ewen.

Elsewhere in the Top 40 this week in 2007, Shayne Ward landed the week's highest new entry with double (bop) A-side No U Hang Up/If That's OK With You, Ida Corr and Fedde Le Grand's electro-house banger Let Me Think About It zoomed to Number 5, and Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse's cover of The Zutons' Valerie was in the middle of its chart ascent, up from 41 to 12 (it would eventually peak at 2).

It's the other way round re the formats isn't it...? (i.e. it charted at #35 on downloads alone then hit #1 with the physical release).

Hello...it's me...

So goes Adele's re-introduction into her world on Hello, the first official single from her third album, and her comeback single after her second record, 21, had made her a global superstar and the James Bond theme Skyfall had made her an Oscar-winner.

The story behind the making of Hello, however, is almost as engaging as the song (a bombastic, punch-to-the-gut ballad with a vocal performance big enough to shake the foundations of the earth) itself.

For that, though, we have to go back to the point where 21 made Adele one of the biggest (the biggest?) superstars of her generation. A break-up record of game-changing proportions, it became one of the best-selling albums of all time on the Official Albums Chart and contained an enviable roster of hits, including Adele's first Number 1 single, Someone Like You.

But how do you follow-up the biggest hit of your career? Adele faced that very same question, and had admitted in the past that, yes, 21 was a very high bar for her to overcome artistically.

Originally, she was hell-bent on making a record that centred on the birth of her son, Angelo (born in 2012), but when she played her new set of songs of super-producer Rick Rubin, he was ambivalent, and suggested she start over again and really find the heart of the music, what she truly wanted to say.

Hello was born out of these sessions in an effort to restart, but even getting it to the finish line proved difficult. Adele had originally started to work on the song with its producer, Greg Kurstin (better known for his work with Sia and Lily Allen), having worked mainly with Paul Epworth across her first two albums, 19 and 21.

But from that original session, it took a further six months for Adele and Kurstin to actually finish the track, given the stop-start nature of the sessions for 25.

But when Hello arrived, it arrived like a comet from the sky. First teased with a (very iconic) trailer during The X Factor (2015...what a time), Hello arrived a week later, carried with an instantly iconic blockbuster music video filmed in IMAX by acclaimed Canadian director Xavier Dolan (who would go on the reunite with Adele on the music video for her next comeback single, Easy On Me in 2021).

As expected of a superstar of Adele's status, Hello's first week on the Official Singles Chart blew all the competition away, Hello debuted at Number 1, securing Adele her second overall Number 1 single and with a then-record-breaking 7.32 million streams, setting a record for the most streams in a single week in UK chart history (Adele would go on to set this record again with Easy On Me, which debuted with a staggering 24 million streams in total).

Hello would ultimately stay at Number 1 for 3 weeks and spend a total of 23 weeks in the UK Top 40. It was the first of three Top 10 singles to be taken from 25, also including the Max Martin and Shellback produced Send My Love (To Your New Lover) (5) and wistful ballad When We Were Young (9).

According to Official Charts Company data, Hello has accumulated 3 million chart units in total, including 232 million streams, making it one of the most-streamed songs of all time in the UK.

Hello's physical sales are also very impressive, clocking in with 981,000 downloads, which means that its now less than 20,000 'pure' sales away from becoming a member of the hallowed million-sellers club in the UK, with the potential to become of the best-selling singles in the history of the Official Chart.

Also in the chart this week in 2015: Justin Bieber had to settle for a second-place debut with Sorry (2), Drake moved up to a new peak with Hotline Bling (3) , as did MNEK and Zara Larsson on Never Forget You (11).

"I wanna be rich and I want lots of money, I don't care about clever, I don't care about funny."

So goes the opening to Lily Allen's synth-pop haze of The Fear, the sound of a dream slowly turning into a nightmare. Her second UK Number 1 single, Lily hit the top spot this week 15 years ago in 2009.

The Fear dislodged Lady Gaga's debut smash Just Dance from the top of the Official Singles Chart, which is handy since both songs make use of 80s-inspired production values that would, over the next few years, become the sound du jour of modern pop music.

Lily debuted straight in the Number 1 position, with first-week sales of 83,367. The Fear is her longest-running chart-topper in the UK, where it stayed in prime position for a full month. As of 2024, the song has notched up 970,000 chart sales in the UK, including 576k on digital download, 10.8k on vinyl and CD, and 43 million video and audio streams.

The track was co-written and produced by Lily's frequent collaborator Greg Kurstin. It's an acerbic, sarcastic and often hilarious look at Lily's changing outlook since the success of her debut album Alright, Still.

"Life's about film stars and less about mothers," Lily memorably deadpans. "I'm not a saint, but I'm not a sinner, and everything's cool as long as I'm getting thinner."

While her first album was focused more so on personal matters, It's Not Me, It's You (which would also hit Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart) was also concerned about the state of society in a post-Blair Britain, mostly on tracks such as The Fear (which satirises Lily's celebrity status), Everyone's At It and the straightforward F*ck You, rumoured to have been written about the head of the extreme right-wing nationalist party the BNP and former US president George W Bush.

Elsewhere in the Official Singles Chart this week in 2009; Alesha Dixon rocketed in to the Top 10 with her mid-tempo ballad Breathe Slow a (which would eventually become her highest-ever charting single, peaking at Number 3) at Number 6, while Jason Mraz's I'm Yours rose to Number 11 and Britney Spears' irresistible Circus jumped to its peak of Number 13.

There were also high risers from The Killers with Human (16), Jordin Sparks' One Step At A Time (16) and Shontelle's shontelligent debut single T-Shirt (25).

New entries also came courtesy of Tommy Reilly (14), Pussycat Dolls (36) and Airborne Toxic Event (39).
