17th January 2021
It's an old 1991 chart-topper back for a 5th week on top 30 years on, The KLF classic heading the list along with Tammy Wynette, as it overtakes one track in the 1991 Top "sales" for my all-time list (Bryan Adams) leaving just one more ahead of it. Still epic. As are the other KLF tracks in the list, which I've just amended to give P.P. Arnold the credit she deserves for the "KLF! Uh-huh"s given the boys never paid what she says they agreed, preferring to burn a million quid rather than hand it out to session singers. It's a busy week for new entries as the New Year gets going, and the chart endures a forced clear-out. Lola Lennox gets a first top 10, and Taylor Swift her latest, and the highest new track is an UNKLE revamp of Perry Farrell's debut here, Let's All Pray For This World. I couldn't agree more! I just bought Dua Lipa's extended version of Future Nostalgia and have cherry-picked two tracks I hadn't already bought and charted, notably Boys Will Be Boys, which is strong enough to get a single release if they want to wring one more hit out of it, and in at 18. London Grammar leap into the top 40, Morgan Wallen's lovely country-ballad 7 Summers debuts, at 47, while Texas return with Hi at 50: That's an amazing 32 years since I Don't Need A Lover, and 5 consecutive decades of chart action. Melanie C continues her run of current chart-popdance-hits, Hayley Williams covers Massive Attack quite effectively for a 3rd decade of occasional action, Sia's back featuring on Leslie Odom Jr's track, Jade Bird & Jubel both return, Lana Del Ray remains prolific as she pushes towards a decade of class, and Barry Gibb covers The Bee Gees, in duet form. 1972's Run To Me hit my top 10 at the time, the new version has charms too and pops in at 59 to give the great man 7 consecutive decades of charting with new records (albeit not a new song in this case). The Bee Gees were number 2 in my first chart in 1968 - behind The Beatles, who still remain at number one given both acts also have an oldie on the chart, but Paul McCartney edges it with 2 new songs and 2 new records on the rundown. It's official: both Barry Gibb and Paul McCartney hold the current record for longest chart-span 52 years 4 months 2 weeks! 1 5 1 3 JUSTIFIED & ANCIENT (STAND BY THE JAMS) The KLF featuring Tammy Wynette & Maxine Harvey 267000 2 1 1 3 STAY WITH ME (BABY) Lorraine Ellison 333000 3 2 1 8 MAKE U STAY Sega Bodega & Lapsley 501400 4 4 1 7 CE MATIN-LA Air 548000 5 15 5 3 LA LA LOVE ME Lola Lennox 99300 6 8 6 6 CORAZON ASTRAL Javiera Mena 200300 7 9 7 4 REAL GROOVE Kylie Minogue 124000 8 7 1 10 ARMS OF GOLD Tape Machines featuring Mia Pfurrman 773000 9 10 9 5 LET ME REINTRODUCE MYSELF Gwen Stefani 134900 10 17 10 5 WILLOW Taylor Swift 93600 11 3 3 10 “1-2-3” Len Barry 301150 12 14 12 3 3AM (ETERNAL) The KLF featuring Ricardo Da Force & P.P. Which is the other song from 1991 that is still ahead of Justified and Ancient? Whatever it is, I can't imagine it could possibly be better than it
I'm not generally a fan of having old number ones but I simply have to make an exception for this one |

I was looking out for your new chart to see if 'Let's All Pray For This World' would be in it as you were complimenting the song in the BJSC thread. Great to see it as high as number 15.

Hey John!
I can't believe how well Air has done for you here :wub; Let Me Reintroduce Myself doing the work here Should be charting for me soon! Willow top 10 *.* I had a feeling that would manage it and with quite a big climb too! Gives me hope for a top 3 peak here! My Head & My Heart still climbing 9 weeks on. Impressive. Can't really see it going much higher here though. Lose Your Head is beautiful. I wasn't going to chart this at first because I had mixed feelings on it but I'm stanning now. Super chart! |

Whatever it is, I can't imagine it could possibly be better than it I'm not generally a fan of having old number ones but I simply have to make an exception for this one It depends how you define "1991" and the issue of remixes as to whether J&A is already top or not It's You Got The Love, Candi Staton & The Source, which was released by Candi in the 80's but didn't chart until the 1991 remix - and then didn't top my chart until the epic 1997 wall-of-sound dance version (and then again in the noughties). So, because it first charted in 1991 for me, I've called it 1991...but really it's the 1997 version plus a few sales from 1991. But the original is an 80's track even though I've only heard it once. Take your pick really |

Thanks Rollo, good luck with it, deserves a top 3 placing, but who knows, people have such different criteria for judging what makes a great record. I always console myself when something I love under-performs by knowing that I'm right and everyone who doesn't agree is wrong |

Hi John!
Guess I have to give your #1 a listen since I'm in here, I'm quite enjoying it! Very funky and the rapping in the middle is an unexpected twist Nice to see La La Love Me into the top 10 but my favourite of your BJSC entries has to be Perry Farrell/UNKLE so nice to see that enter nice and high! It's in my Top 40 as well this week. Still deciding what to think about Drivers Licencse but the way she's just blown up out of nowhere is geniunely amazing, great to see that can still happen in 2021. Great chart |

Good to hear you like Gwen - sorry to say that Willow's peak is 10, though - still loving it, but Radio 2 is playing it a lot so I'm hearing it a lot. You're right about Ava Max, and same reason really, Radio 2 has been plugging it for weeks. The more I hear tracks the quicker I reach peak saturation Lose Your Head, though, I;m only hearing when I play it, so its still fresh! Cheers! |

Glad you like the KLF track, one of my all-time faves that one Glad you are also charting Perry Farrell - it's gone all the way for me this week! Driver's License I was also a bit dubious about, expecting a simpering teen ballad, but it's quite mature, and yes it's great to see new acts come out of nowhere to the top spot and overhaul the "guaranteed" chart-toppers like Sheeran & Bieber! Cheers! |

Glad you like the new version of Run To Me, it's quite nice, and the Abba and Preston/Syreeta oldies, neither did as well as they deserved (I didnt chart B sides back then, and Billy/Syreeta did hang around long enough during a busy period for great music) thanks for the picks! |
