Love Story and Shake It Off top 2, although I think SIO got some low scores but I can't really think what else could be so high, maybe YBWM? thinking.gif

Posted by: Jade Aug 27 2017, 08:36 PM

"The winning song had an average just 0.01 higher than the second placed song" - this surprises me, I thought 'Blank Space' was not only going to win but also be a runaway winner at that. I guess I was just noticing a fair amount of 11s for it. Exciting ohmy.gif

'I Knew You Were Trouble.' to somehow scrape top 5 even despite the -1s it got please.

I predict a Wildest Dreams win.

I predict a Wildest Dreams win.

Wildest Dreams would be a great surprise winner! Definitely a highlight on '1989' for me. wub.gif

Didn't take part in this as I know so little of her singles pre-Red and somehow I didn't even see it until like two days before lmao but backing 'Style' to win, such a gem <3

35th The Last Time (ft. Gary Lightbody) 5.46

UK peak: #25
US peak: #103
Highest score: 10 (Bre, Chez)
Lowest score: -1 (Liam, UltraReputation)

The song that both mods rated -1 finishes last, thanks for appeasing us guys wink.gif This is just SUCH a drainingly boring song and never ever should have been a single imo, her second worse song behind Never Grow Up. It managed a top 40 peak because of an X Factor performance. The song itself is a ballad with alternative rock influences that describes a vicious cycle of a relationship that is constantly about to break but never quite cracks.

34th Tim McGraw 5.50

UK peak: N/A
US peak: #40 (Platinum)
Highest score: 9 (UltraReputation)
Lowest score: -1 (Cameron)

This song was one of two songs not to receive any 10s! In 2006, this song burst onto the scene as Taylor's debut single, and was a top 40 pop hit and a #6 on the country chart. It's typical of her first album, a sweet and competent enough country track but nothing special or dynamic. It's probably about in the right place as it is one of her weaker singles for me. Lyrically, this song details a summer romance that ends, and the things Taylor hopes will remind the ex of her and make him think of the good times they had.

33rd I Don't Wanna Live Forever (ZAYN & Taylor Swift) 5.63

UK peak: #5 (Platinum)
US peak: #2 (3x Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (UltraReputation)
Lowest score: 0 (Dobbo, Mack)

The most recent single in this rate is one of hte lowest! This was a release in late 2016 for 50 Shades Of Grey, and in fitting with the movie it is a sensual R&B tinged electro ballad. This isn't a style that really fits Taylor a huge amount but I do like this song, I think it should be a bit higher although it isn't one I go back to a huge amount.

32nd Today Was A Fairytale 5.79

UK peak: #57
US peak: #2 (Platinum)
Highest peak: 10 (all is vanity, Spadam)
Lowest score: 1 (bre)

Next to bow out is a soundtrack single that was released just rior to Speak Now, for the film Valentine's Day. This is one of those song there isn't mjuch to say about it, it's nice and all but doesn't at all hold up to much of her material. Lyrically, the song makes use of princess imagery painting an instance of spending time with a boy as a "fairytale".

31st Everything Has Changed (ft. Ed Sheeran) 5.90

UK peak: #7 (Gold)
US peak: #32 (Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (Harry)
Lowest score: -1 (Joe)

The final song of this pre top 30 batch is another collab, this time with omnipresent ginger Ed Sheeran. This gets a bit too much hate imo, it's a cute litttle duet but it wouldn't have been a single if the duet was with someone else laugh.gif This folk pop song portrays a new romance that feels good and all of the excitement that comes with getting to fall in love with someone as they unravel within the relationship, and it was a solid hit as the 4th single from Red.

Posted by: all is vanity. Aug 27 2017, 11:52 PM

Surprised that I Don't Wanna Live Forever and Today Was a Fairytale are that low.

Posted by: Jade Aug 27 2017, 11:56 PM

Aww 'The Last Time' should definitely not be last </3 It clicked with me straight away when they duetted it on X Factor. A shame to see 'Everything Has Changed' out so quickly as well from the Red era, it's a lovely song with a really sweet accompanying video. Then 'I Don't Wanna Live Forever' too! BJ clearly not a fan of her duets with males laugh.gif I usually like ZAYN but his falsetto was quite off-putting in that song tbh.

'Tim McGraw' and 'Today Was a Fairytale' aren't big losses for me at least

Posted by: SamJudd Aug 28 2017, 11:08 PM

No surprises here, 'The Last Time' is pretty bland though, but do have a soft spot for 'Tim McGraw' which is nice enough and harmless debut single from her humble beginnings.

'I Don't Wanna Live Forever' was pretty dire though, and the others here are just a bit MEH.

Posted by: UltraReputation Aug 28 2017, 11:09 PM

Justice for IDWLF </3 </3 so underrated! I love Taylor's vocals and it is a fab ballad <3

Posted by: UltraReputation Aug 28 2017, 11:10 PM

Yasss at that rubbish finishing last though cheer.gif

TIAF & EHC probs deserve their positions and I'd have Tim McGraw a bit higher but I can't say I'm shocked at that being so low!

30th White Horse 6.37

UK peak: #67
US peak: #13 (2x Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (Liam)
Lowest score: 2 (John James)

The first huge loss for me sad.gif This beautiful song was the follow up to Love Story in the US, and peaked at #13 as well as winning a Grammy for Taylor's tender vocals made all the mroe raw by stark simple production to emphasise the pain and emotion. In stark contrast to Love Story, the lyrics of White Horse have a more realistic and bleak outlook to relationships - they aren't always fairytales and percection. The narrator realises that a boy is not the Prince charming she has hyped him up to be. I can't believe I was the only 10 for this sad.gif

29th Both Of Us (B.o.B. ft. Taylor Swift) 6.38

UK peak: #22
US peak: #18 (Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (Jonjo, Cameron)
Lowest score: 0 (blacksquare)

Another collab bows out now, this time a featre from Taylor on a B.o.B song. It was nice to hear Taylor alongside a rapper on this conscious hip-hop track that deals with themes of racism and bulying and rising above them. Taylor's chorus is lovely and the rap is solid but this isn't a HUGE fave for me, at least she collabed with B.o.B before he decided he was a flat earther who espouses hat 9/11 was an inside job and the moon landing was staged, I suppose laugh.gif

28th Picture To Burn 6.40

UK peak: N/A
US peak: #28 (2x Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (Liam, SamJudd, Swiftie)
Lowest score: 1 (John James)

Another big loss sad.gif Not to everyone's taste I undestand, but I adore the playful sass in this track which perfectly suits the instrumentation, Taylor's voice and the lyrics. After two sweet love songs and a nice sad ballad, this was our first taste of angry Swift, but she angled it in a playful way, no Jagged Little Pill ness from her yet kink.gif

27th Sweeter Than Fiction 6.50

UK peak: #45
US peak: #34
Highest score: 10 (UltraReputation, Spadz)
Lowest score: 2 (Cameron)

Sam will be happy at this Sweeter Than Fiction avoided bottom 5 ohmy.gif Hpnestly this is the Taylor song I've probably listened to least, it's onl soundtrack single and is nothing spectacular although I do prefer it to say Today Was A Fairytale. This new-wavey song was released in conjunction with the film One Chance, a biopic about Paul Potts (film goals x), and hardly set the charts alight by her standards. It's a light bop and I should probably go back to more, but I just don't :/

26th Our Song 6.64

UK peak: N/A
US peak: #18 (4x platinum)
Highest score: 9.5 (UltraReputation)
Lowest score: 1 (blacksquare)

Finishing up this section is another single from the self titled, so only Teardrops and Should've Said No remain. This is yet again a sweet little country ditty about a happy relationship, with the lyrics portraying a couple who an't find their "song" so replace it with everyday little pleasures in life. The song was a huge US success but of course didn't chart here in the UK. I do love this but I think it's probably about right, I'd maybe have it 2 or 3 places higher idk. It's getting far too hard to order and say what should go where as I'm such a blind stan!

Posted by: Jade Aug 29 2017, 12:24 AM

'Both Of Us' is my favourite out of that bunch! I expected that to be a top 10 smash here at the time but it only ended up peaking at #22 with 3 weeks in the top 40! Mess

Posted by: UltraReputation Aug 29 2017, 12:57 AM

WH/PTB/OS are probs exactly where I'd put them with The latter maybe a couple of places higher! Both of us should be bottom five as well

YASSSS AT SWEETER THAN FICTION cheer.gif thought it would be locked on for bottom five so I'm glad it did pretty well here. The most underrated Taylor track and I legit saw the Paul Potts film just to hear the song played in the credits!!! <3

25th Fifteen 6.72

UK peak: N/A
US peak: #23 (2x Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (Riser)
Lowest score: 3 (blacksquare)

The first Fearless single to bow out is not a surprise really, it's ballad Fifteen. This is a sweet and relatable song for sure, as Taylor sings about all the silly little things that make up your life at school, and that you soon realise they don't dictate your whole life so don't get swallowed up by them. I really do like this track especially for its lyrical content, but I wouldn't put it much higher than this for sure (this will be the point where I start saying everything should be higher so feel free to ignore my comments of this ilk kink.gif

24th Safe & Sound (ft. The Civil Wars) 6.85

UK peak: #67
US peak: #30 (2x Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (UltraReputation, Liam, Iz, Swiftie)
Lowest score: -1 (Bre)

WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTT. This beautiful song should easily be top 20 sad.gif Imo this is one of her best vocal performances, so haunting in all its simplicity and folky production <3 It fits so well within The Hunger Games (the movie it was written for) and could easily have slotted onto either Speak Now or Red. The lyrics portray the heroine Katniss' feelings of love and compassion for various characters in the film. Ffs Bre giving it -1, at least Jade propped it up with a 9 (#BradeAreNotTheSamePerson :kink).

23rd Eyes Open 6.94

UK peak: #70
US peak: #19 (Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (Iz, Swiftie, JohnJames, Riser)
Lowest score: 2 (Blacksquare)

Another song from the same movie follows S&S, with a slightly higher average. Personally I don't feel this is as good as S&S by any means but it's still a great song. This has a more rocky sound to it, sounding fuller and quite epic, with the lyrics representing Katniss' cautious relationship with the Capitol in the film. This sound really suits Taylor so I was glad to see it explored again on Red with the epic opener State Of Grace.

22nd Begin Again 7.00

UK peak: #30
US peak: #7 (Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (Swiftie, JohnJames)
Lowest score: 4 (blacksquare)

A return to country after a huge pop single, Begin Again was acclaimed by critics, particularly for the lyrics. This ballad speaks of a love that restores the narrator's faith after a string of failures that ended in heartbreaks. This is a perfect classic Taylor song, writing about such a simple thing as someone finally making you feel happy and making it feel magical and capturing the feeling perfectly in a way that anyone can relate to and almost feel it for themselves. I always love this song so much more than I realise and tbh I probably undersold it in my rate but oh well that would've probably pushed the next song even lower laugh.gif

21st We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together 7.07

UK peak: #4 (Platinum)
US peak: #1 (6x Platinum)
Highest score: 11 (Joseph, Spadam, Mack)
Lowest score: -1 (Shaphne, Chez)

Biggest shock of the rate imo, one of Taylor's biggest hits and the one that launched her to pop superstardom misses the top 20 ohmy.gif Released in 2012, this put to bed Taylor's country career by bursting onto the scene in a cloud of twangy guitars and sass, with Taylor defiantly dismissing an ex who wwants to give things another go. I can see why some wouldn't be a fan of this, as it has a sort of... childish (for want of a better word) chanted chorus, and a bubblegum pop sound. I personally love it but with Max Martin behind it it was hard to go wrong! This was her first US #1 and also went top 5 in the UK, becoming her second platinum single here, and the rest of course is history as she's now one of the biggest stars in the world.

Posted by: Separate Aug 30 2017, 12:28 AM

I really can't at WANEGBT finishing so low :/
Would have liked to see Begin Again surprise finish top 15 but that seems about right for it.

Posted by: UltraReputation Aug 30 2017, 12:28 AM

I'm legit still shocked at WANEGBT missing the top 20. cry.gif

Posted by: UltraReputation Aug 30 2017, 12:30 AM

Begin Again & Fifteen are probs a bit too high for me, I wouldn't have minded either finishing bottom five. I'd also have Eyes Open a few place slower as well probably though I adore that!

Safe & Sound heart.gif heart.gif Such an incredible song and it really deserves to be top 20 here sad.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles Aug 30 2017, 12:38 AM

Some good'uns out already! Today Was a Fairytale is particularly low, I'm sure it's not as familiar to many of the raters but it deserved better than that sad.gif Everything Has Changed also deserved better really, and The Last Time is defo not her worst.

I'm not even gonna comment on #21 cause it's gonna make me angry though, what a ridiculous placing mellow.gif

Posted by: Andrew. Aug 30 2017, 01:03 AM

21st mellow.gif Like Joseph I probably should leave that without comment, let's just say I'm praying for buzzjack's taste right now x

Posted by: Jade Aug 30 2017, 01:24 AM

GUTTED to see 'Safe & Sound' missing the top 20 </3 that song is an absolute stunner and her vocals sound captivating on it, quite possibly the best they've ever sounded. I had no idea that Bray even disliked that song let alone hated it, until this rate! #Bradearenothtesameperson sleep.gif I cannae at that x

'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' that low is a huge shock, I thought it would be top 5 ohmy.gif I hope 'I Knew You Were Trouble.' isn't outside the top 10 mellow.gif

Omg at this batch, it's nearly all of her singles from 2012, and almost in order too! Just needed Begin Again to beat WANEGBT, and it would have been hilarious if that happened.

Posted by: Josh! Aug 30 2017, 09:28 AM

Shaking my head at these results drama.gif I really wanted to vote but I was unfamiliar with so much stuff pre-Red and I never got around to listening to them all before I went on holiday sad.gif

IDWLF gets way too much hate though, it's not one of her best bangers or anything but I've always liked how sultry it is and it really works for a film like Fifty Shades.

WANEGBT is waaaaay too low too (probably in my top five of hers or just outside!). It's so much better than most of the Red singles aside from 22 for me so I can't believe how low it is sad.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Aug 30 2017, 10:16 AM

YES YES YES at WANEGBT missing the top 20. cheer.gif

There is not one redeemable quality about that song, a horrible abomination.

20th Mean 7.20

UK peak: N/A
US peak: #11 (3x Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (UltraReputation, Liam, Harry, Joseph)
Lowest score: 0 (Bre)

Kicking off the top 20 is one of Taylor's most countrified offerings, a song that draws from bluegrass rather than her usual country-pop or straight out pop. It's a sound that really suits her, and rather than sound out of place in her discography, she moulds it to her usual lyrical style perfectly. In this case, said lyrics are a takedown of critics who incessantly said she couldn't sing during promotion for the Fearless era, executed in the typically perfect not too serious way that Taylor always nails.

19th Teardrops On My Guitar 7.26

UK peak: #51
US peak: #13 (3x Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (Jonjo, John James)
Lowest score: -1 (Tawdry Hepburn)

An early offering next, this time a song that embodies her first and second eras as it was a US single for the former and a UK single for the latter, following her worldwide breakthrough Love Story. This is a lovely country ballad that, typically for her first couple of eras, deals with love. As you'd guess from the title though, this is heartbreak rather than a perfect fairytale. An anthem for unrecquited love we could all relate to as a teen I'm sure laugh.gif

Posted by: UltraReputation Aug 30 2017, 05:02 PM

Mean is fab and I'm glad it made the top 20, definitely a highlight from Speak Now wub.gif

Teardrops is fab but I would've put a few other songs top 20 over it which have dropped out!

Posted by: Jade Aug 30 2017, 05:04 PM

I'm not really a fan of ultra countrified Taylor but 'Teardrops On My Guitar' is the one song I do quite like from her debut, a nice lil simple song. Nostalgia definitely helps with that too as I used to put the music channels on while I did homework and that song would come on so much.

Posted by: John-James Aug 30 2017, 05:18 PM

Begin Again is much lower than expected! I thought it was a fan favourite and deservedly so cry.gif

Eyes Open was the song that made me fall in love with Taylor wub.gif

Teardrops On My Guitar is also one of her best tracks! Shame on you all! sob.gif

18th Sparks Fly 7.33 (less 10s)

Highest score: 10 (Johnkm, Billy)
Lowest score: 2 (Mack)
UK peak: N/A
US peak: #17 (Platinum)

In the first tie of the rate, the final single of Speak Now before its re-release just loses out. This is classic Taylor country pop, nothng new by the time Speak Now came out but it does the job well, I just wish it had got a better video than the generic tour one. Lyrically, this is about love that shouldn't make you feel so good, but it produces magic, sparks and electric chemistry.

17th Should've Said No 7.33 (more 10s)

Highest score: 10 (UltraReputation, Liam, Shaphne, Swiftie)
Lowest score: 3 (blacksquare)
UK peak: N/A
US peak: #33

The highest from her debut, I am so pleased with how it's done <3 it remains one of my faves of hers, it hasn't got the clever lyricism of later songs or the intricacy of production of her pop stuff, but it nails being basic country SO much and I adore it. The song is about a cheating partner and Taylor dismissing them saying they can't have both and should've just stuck to her. This was her first single to chart internationally, sneaking top 20 in New Zealand. Also this inspired an iconic cover by Nichole337 of course, which has more views than Taylor singing this *_*

Posted by: JosephStyles Aug 30 2017, 11:10 PM

Should've Said No is deservedly the highest of the debut album's singles! Great song wub.gif

16th The Story Of Us 7.36

Highest score: 11 (Joe)
Lowest score: 4 (Iz, Swiftie, Mack)
UK peak: N/A
US peak: #41 (Platinum)

Arguably first big hint of Taylors transition to pop as a single bows out next! The Story Of Us is pretty much solid pop-rock without a hint of country, but melodically it is still very Taylor, and the lyrics focus on an awkward meeting between exes after a break-up as the awkward weight of everyting that should be said but is going unsaid fills the air. Musically, the song takes influence from pop-punk with drums and heavy guitar with an upbeat anthemic chorus. This is something I'd have loved to have heard a bit more of Red when she meregd pop and country influences really well but I guess we had Better Than Revenge on Speak Now too.

15th 22 7.57

Highest score: 10 (Spadam, Mack)
Lowest score: 0 (Bre)
UK peak: #9
US peak: #20 (3x Platinum)

The third Red single to bow out is 22! This poppy anthem is in a quite similar vein to We Are Never Getting Back TOgether, but not as strong whilst I love it so I'm a bit eh at it finishing 6 places higher... It's a bop anyway though, one of those I always love more than I realsie when I listen to it laugh.gif Lyrically, it's as joyous as the production, as it details the fun of being young and carefree and just having as much as fun as possible while you can.

Posted by: Jade Aug 31 2017, 01:38 PM

'The Story Of Us' is solid, I'm pretty sure that was the first Taylor song that ever made my personal chart. '22' on the other hand is my least favourite Taylor single, there's just something incredibly annoying about it sad.gif 'I Knew You Were Trouble' vs. 'Red' for highest 'Red' single then! Would be a turn up for the books if the latter beat both of the huge hits from this era laugh.gif but let's hope not, IKYWT for top 10 please~

Posted by: Separate Aug 31 2017, 02:53 PM

22 got old pretty quick for me, wish The Story of Us was above it!

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Aug 31 2017, 05:07 PM

'The Story of Us' was the only Taylor song I even liked until 'I Knew You Were Trouble'.

I know they're essentially the same, but 22 >>>> WANEGBT easily.

14th New Romantics 7.58

Highest score: 10 (UltraReputation, Jonjo, Johnkm, blacksquare, Swiftie)
Lowest score: 4 (Dobbo, Cameron)
UK peak: #132
US peak: #42 (Gold)

The first of the 1989 singles to bow out still impressively makes top 15! This new wave influenced track was originally a deluxe bonus track but was released as the 7th and final single. As the era had kind of winded down at this point, it failed to capture the same audiences, sales and chart peaks as the singles before it. This song lyrically deals with the new ways in which people view love and life. I always thought it should have been on the album in the first place so I'm glad it at least got a video (even if it was YET ANOTHER tour one :')).

13th Fearless 7.74

Highest score: 10 (Liam, Dobbo)
Lowest score: 2 (blacksquare)
UK peak: #111
US peak: #9 (Platinum)

Another tour video and another final single! This time it's the title track and 5th single from Fearless. This is classic country-pop Taylor with its universal lyrics that are relatable to pretty much any listener, focusing on the fearless feeling that love and support can give you in order to tackle everything. I'm so shocked this got so close to top 10 but I'm glad, it's such a fab song <3

Posted by: Separate Aug 31 2017, 06:45 PM

New Romantics is a bit overrated imo

Posted by: HarryEzra Aug 31 2017, 06:58 PM

Fearless and New Romantics are alright I guess

Posted by: Andrew. Aug 31 2017, 07:08 PM

'New Romantics' is stunning wub.gif

Posted by: UltraReputation Aug 31 2017, 08:34 PM

Fearless is FAR too high. I'd have it like 20 places lower!

New Romantics is an utterly fab pop song and i really think it would be more loved on here if it was a hit sad.gif

Posted by: Josh! Aug 31 2017, 08:48 PM

Teardrops On My Guitar is quite cute. It's never been one of my absolute favourite songs by her but I do find it quite sweet when I hear it and probably one of her better earlier tracks in my opinion. She has better ballads in her later career for sure though!

22 is far, far, far too low though! Would've been in contention for my 11 if I had voted drama.gif It's pure pop perfection and even catchier and more fun than anything on 1989, I can not help lip-syncing my heart out EVERY TIME I play it out loud.

Posted by: Jade Aug 31 2017, 10:01 PM

'New Romantics' is great! I had only been familiar with the standard version of '1989' for a couple of years, so ashamedly only heard it for the first time when released as a single. Had the worst video of the campaign as it was just a standard tour one but at least the song was good, solid chorus.

12th Shake It Off 7.79

UK peak: #2 (Platinum)
US peak: #1 (9x Platinum)
Highest score: 11 (UltraReputation)
Lowest score: 0 (Shaphne, Johnkm)

The 2nd 1989 single to bow out is Taylor's biggest hit ohmy.gif A million seller in the UK, this bop was also certified a whopping 9 times platinum in the US. This was her first out and out dance-pop single, ditching guitars and the country twang for a saxophone backing track and brash sassy vocals. This infectious bop deals lyrically with "shaking off" those who detract you and getting on with life regardless. I absolutely love this, it's so catchy and never got old for me! The live stream revealing this is one of my fave Taylor moments, to get the song, video AND album announcement in that small space of time was so exciting! This is a bit divisive so I feel it would do much better in a "rank your top 10" thing, so will probably slay the 1989 vs Teenage Dream thing.

11th Bad Blood (ft. Kendrick Lamar) 7.87

UK peak: #4 (Gold)
US peak: #1 (5x Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (UltraReputation, Jade, Harry, all is vanity, Swiftie, JohnJames, Bre)
Lowest score: 2 (SamJudd)

Just missing the top 10 is another 1989, this time the Kendrick Lamar collab Bad Blood. I have to admit I'd have this a bit lower, I do adore the punchy production and vocals, but it never hit me as much as the other 1989 singles. Of course, lyrically this infamously is thought to refer to the Katy Perry feud, and the production is quite stark, whilst still being striking on the single version. The video is of course incredible, her best until Look What You Made Me Do blew everything out of the water kink.gif

Posted by: Jade Sep 1 2017, 01:11 AM

Oh blimey I expected 'Shake It Off' quite a bit higher than that. ohmy.gif not really complaining though as it's my least favourite '1989' single, it's still good but everything that followed kept getting better and better. Like... 'Bad Blood' for instance! wub.gif I initially would've ranked it below 'Shake It Off' for the album version which is crazy in hindsight considering I've given it a 10 here post-single mix! The single treatment transformed it from something annoying to a super-slick offering from Taylor. The video really helped sell it as well.

'I Knew You Were Trouble.' top 10! cheer.gif

Shake It Off is fab and a massive Taylor fave so I'm disappointed it missed the top 10 but on the other hand I'm kinda relieved it's not lower laugh.gif
Bad Blood is fab and I would have it around there as well! It was flopping as badly at WANEGBT at one point so I'm glad it recovered to a good position!

I thought SIO would be higher but not a big loss, I think its position is deserved.

Bad Blood is incredible, one of my absolute favourites wub.gif

10th Back To December 8.01

UK peak: N/A
US peak: #6 (2x Platinum)
Highest score: 11 (Harry, Iz, Riser)
Lowest score: 4 (blacksquare, HausOfSZA)

Kicking off the top 10 is the highest song in this rate that didn't chart in the UK! This stunning musical letter of apology to ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner was the second single from Speak Now, and the second highest from the album behind preceding single Mine. I didn't expect ths to be top 10 but I'm thrilled, it's an absolutely stunning song because of the mixture of strikingly honest lyrics, orchestral instumental and delicious melody tat somehow manages to make a melancholy song like this as catchy and memorable as a huge pop song like Shake It Off or 22. This is a perfect example of what a brilliant songwriter Taylor is, she single handedly wrote this when she was barely an adult and it strikes such a chord of universal truth, nailing how it feels when you know you've wrecked something and wish with all your heart that you hadn't. In a discography full of songs that haters constantly tear down for being petty and using people for more fame, this is one of her most undeniably honest and raw.

9th Red 8.17 (less 11s)

UK peak: #26
US peak: #6 (Platinum)
Highest score: 10 (UltraReputation, Liam, Iz, Cameron, Swiftie, Riser)
Lowest score: 5 (Mack, billy)

The title trck from Red is the highest song not to receive any 11s, and it also boasts the highest number for lowest score alongisde one other track to come ohmy.gif This is another I didn't think would quite be top 10 but I'm glad, I feel it's one of the most perfect meldings of pop and country in Taylor's discography. It's got glossier pop production than say Love Story or Mine, but it still has that undeniable country feel and the simple et perfect lyrics full of metaphors and perfect descrption of intricate feelings that wuld fit really easily on Speak Now or Fearless. Lyrically, this details the rainbow of emotions that love and heartbreak can make you feel, a perfect metaphor for it really. Overall, this is an all out huge pop song that refuses to leave my head whenever I hear it.

8th Mine 8.17 (more 11s)

UK peak: #30
US peak: #3 (3x Platinum)
Highest score: 11 (Wonderland Swiftie, Billy)
Lowest score: 2 (Bre)

Winning a tie against Red is another country single, this time the lead from Speak Now, Mine. Whilst I gave this a 9, I'd have this lower because I gave SO many 9s and 10s lmao. I really like it ofc but it just didn't quite hold up to some of her other country stuff. Critics were a bit underwhelmed that for this lead her sound hadn't really gone anywhere from the first two albums, but of course her lyrics were praised as always. This focuses on love in a more realistic way than the fairytale wonder of Love Story, but it's still happiness. The little things like having a drawer of things at his place and paying bills without a plan to do so are on show here, but with the same pin point accuracy as the fairytale feelingof butterflies and feeling like a princess, such is Taylor's songwriting talent.

I've just realized how much I adore 'Back To December'. It's so beautiful.

This rate has also made me realize how strong her discography is. Such a well made progression in maturity and adopting new styles of pop to her country roots. Bravo. Omg. Am I a fan? Wtf.

7th Style 8.20

UK chart: #21 (Silver)
US chart: #6 (3x Platinum)
Highest score: 11 (Cameron, HausOfSZA)
Lowest score: -1 (JohnJames)

Another 1989 single bows out, but we still have 3 left ohmy.gif I have to say, again I'm kinda surprised at this top 10. I really like it but like Mine, I wouldn't have it quite this high. I gave it a 9 but it's the weakest 1989 single for me. It is a fab pop song regardless though, it's got the 80s feeling of a lot of the album nailed, it's a bit pop-rocky and a bit funky. This is thought to be about Harry Styles, not helped by the title basically being his surname! Taylor describes it as being about those relationships that are complicated even when they end, the grown up feeling of realising that with emotions there is never really a right or wrong - matters of the heart get blurry very quickly.

Posted by: Separate Sep 3 2017, 03:17 PM

Lovely single wub.gif I think it's probably 7th or at least top 10 for me as well laugh.gif

Posted by: Andrew. Sep 3 2017, 03:28 PM

'Style' is utterly sublime and should be #1 for sure wub.gif Probably her most underrated single by the GP, it could've been a top 10 hit with Spotify sad.gif

Posted by: Tyler Sep 3 2017, 03:47 PM

Style is fantastic. It managed to hold its own identity after 'Blank Space' and that speaks volumes. Would probably have it a couple spots lower though.

6th You Belong With Me 8.35

UK peak: #30 (Silver)
US peak: #2 (7x Platinum)
Highest score: 11 (Shaphne)
Lowest score: 5 (blacksquare, bre)

Finishing just shy of the top 5 is the song that indirectly "made that bitch (Taylor) famous", if you believe Kanye West. Which we don't ofc. This song winning Taylor a VMA for best female video led to one of the most infamous VMA moments ever in which Kanye stormed the stage saying Beyonce deserved the award for Single Ladies. Up to the 1989 era when Bad blood and Blank Space smashed it, this was deffo her best video for me, I love the way she plays both characters and it's just such a fun video. The song is a bop too, classic country pop Taylor about a friend who just can't see he's with the wrong girl and is friendzoning the right girl. We can all relate in some way from our teen years of that being our biggest problem laugh.gif Despite only peaking at #30, this is certified Silver in the UK, and it also happens to be her most viewed country single on Youtube with 750 million views.

5th Love Story 8.46 (less 11s)

UK peak: #2 (Platinum)
US peak: #4 (8x Platinum)
Highest score: 11 (Liam)
Lowest score: 1 (Bre)

The highest country song kicks off the top 5, losing a tie to one of Taylor's later pop songs which will soon be revealed! This was my 11, it's the song that kicked off my obsession with someone who's become my fave act, it was tough competition with songs like Shake It Off, Wildest Dreams, Back To December and Should've Said No which put up a solid fight. Her breakthrough success worldwide, this is a landmark song for Taylor and was a platinum #2 in the UK, just held off by Kelly Clarkson's My Life Would Suck Without You. It's classic Taylor really, a sweet fairytale love song with a huge chorus that you just can't help but sing along to.

UK chart: #2 (Platinum)
US chart: #2 (6x Platinum)

Lowest score: -1 (Johnkm, billy)

BANGERRRR. At the time this was utterly bizarre, imagine sitting listening to Speak Now and someone telling you that the biggest hit from the next album would feature a dubstep infused chorus, you'd laugh right? laugh.gif But this just absolutely works, a pop-rock tune that isn't too much of a Taylor departure (insanely catchy nonetheless) morphs into a bass filled chorus of OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHs and a climactic middle 8, but as messy and noisy as it sounds on paper, it is just a perfect pop song and easily one of her best. Lyrically, the song details a relationship that the narrator always knew was going to go bad so she was prepared for it to careen off track. This is one of the songs you never get enough of so it's no surprise it was such a hit, and her 2nd biggest seller in the UK behind Shake It Off and just in front of Love Story - so it's fitting they tied kink.gif

Love Story and IKYWT are both nice songs actually and I do like them a lot but I do feel overplay killed both a bit for me so I don't go back to them much by choice. Mine and YBWM would have replaced those in my top five personally.

Can't believe Style made the top 10 too, I've always liked it but it is pretty dull in comparison to her other singles. 22 should've been this high instead, I always get proper excited when that comes on wub.gif

1 Wildest Dreams

3rd Out Of The Woods 8.67

UK peak: #138
US peak: #18
Highest score: 11 (Chez, Jonjo, Johnkm)
Lowest score: 5 (Dobbo, Mack)

In a top 3 filled by 1989 tracks, the sixth single bows out before a top 2 of Blank Space and Wildest Dreams! For me this is a bit... overrated is the wrong word as I gave it 9.5 still, and I know it sounds silly to say anything like that about a song I scored that high, but put it this way it's probably 5th or 6th for me on 1989 so it's certainly not in my top 3 Taylor singles tongue.gif When an artist's discography is so strong, a 9.5 being top 3 does feel a bit high for me. But anyway, this is a huge pop song regardless, it blends 1980s synths with a huge chorus backed by a bombastic loop of sounds. That chorus gets me every time *.* As with Style, this is thought to be about Harry Styles. It's a shame the UK peak for this is such a joke but it was near the end of a huge selling album's single campaign and of course as with the rest of the era streaming wasn't on side so she was really fighting a losing battle with this on the UK chart.

Posted by: Separate Sep 5 2017, 01:21 PM

Want(Ed):

1. Woods
2. Starbucks Lovers
3. While Dis Streams

(Would've) expected:

1. Starbucks Lovers
2. Woods
3. While Dis Streams

But I didn't know WD was so popular! Overrated imo, I'd've preferred it somewhere like #7 tbh

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Sep 5 2017, 01:29 PM

I'm so glad OOTW is generally acknowledged as being in her top 3 best. It really is in a league of its own, dare I say it too good for her.

'Wildest Dreams' is a really nice song, but I'd prefer not to see it take the crown.

Posted by: Jay ☆ Sep 5 2017, 01:57 PM

Out of the Woods' peak of #136 was achieved in the first week of the abum's release! It failed to re-enter the Top 200 when it was given the single treatment. cry.gif That seems crazy, but evidently the combination of 6th single & no Spotify was deadly. drama.gif (Having said that, New Romantics as 7th single managed to attain a peak of #132, some months later. Maybe that had an advantage due to not being on the standard version of 1989).

The Top 2 is perfect! wub.gif I'd prefer a Blank Space win, but I think Wildest Dreams will clinch it. Either way, I'm happy. *.*

BLANK SPACE vs. WILDEST DREAMS

02 Blank Space 9.01

UK peak: #4 (Platinum)
US peak: #1 (7x Platinum)
Highest score: 11 (Jay, Blacksquare, Bre, Mr Aly)
Lowest score: 2 (Shaphne)

Jus being pipped to the post by 0.01 is Blank Space, the smash second single from 1989. It got the most 11s so was naturally going to contend for the win, receiving only one score below a 7 th same as Wildest Dreams, but this lowest score was much lower so it slipped to 2nd. This instantly took off upon the album being released, so of course was a natural fit for the second single to follow up Taylor's biggest UK hit yet. It was yet another US #1 and a smash top 5 in the UK. The polished minimal production works so well, it leave the lyrics to shine and arguably this is lyrically the best song on 1989, perfectly satirising Taylor's media image and the scrutiny she is under. I feel this song easily sums up 1989, perfectly crafted glimmering pop that manages to be subtle and explosive at the same time.

That means your winner is....

01 Wildest Dreams 9.02

UK peak: #40 (Silver)
US peak: #5 (3x Platinum)
Highest score: 11 (all is vanity, John James)
Lowest score: 4 (Dobbo)

This gives me Demi rate teas when Heart Attack only won with 2 11s laugh.gif Hopefully this goes down better than that did tongue.gif Your winner is the 5th single from 1989, the mystical Wildest Dreams! This is such a stunning song, taking the Lana Del Rey, moody sound and imbuing it with shimmering perfect pop sensbility. It also changes things up lyrically from the source material, subverting the sadness and drama of missing a man for telling the man that he's gonna be forever haunted by what he's lost by messing it up. That last chorus when she kicks up a notch gets me EVERY time, it goes from a subtle song of total wonder and mysticism to an impactful and powerful final chorus that makes sure the song stays with you. Easily one of her best and a deserving winner wub.gif

Posted by: Separate Sep 5 2017, 08:26 PM

'Wildest Dreams' wouldn't have been my choice but still a lovely track and highlight of 1989 wub.gif Really happy to see 'Mine' so high especially, one of my faves pre-1989! I predicted 7th for 'I Knew You Were Trouble.' due to the -1s it got, so I'm very happy that it finished as high as 4th in the end! 'Out Of The Woods' is my 2nd favourite Taylor song after that also so that was a flawless back-to-back *.*
