Following recent terrorism legislation, local government staff are now instructed to report to a special division of the police anyone they feel is acting unusually. This includes being a bit unusually quiet, taking an interest in websites secretively, children they feel may be at risk of being brainwashed. And so on. Obviously family and friends of people aren't as good at spotting this sort of behaviour as casual work colleagues or complete strangers.
The police will hold any reports on file, and collate them, and see if they can build up a picture of patterns of behaviour to catch terrorist suspects. Knowing the public as I do, I expect that some of the reports to special police authorities will be along the lines of: He has a dodgy-looking beard Is worryingly Muslim-ey Looked at me the wrong way Had a holiday next to a mosque (this is one for me by the way, I will actually be staying in a hotel next door to a mosque, albeit a very tolerant and polite one) Is being too quiet for my liking. Seems a bit depressed and likely to be brainwashed. Any thoughts? |
