BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Bré's UK Charts Family Fortunes / RESULTS

Posted by: Bré Jun 10 2020, 07:35 PM

Thanks to the 32 of you (plus myself - I locked my answers in before I even started the voting thread so no accusations of cheating xx) who took part in this quiz, not bad turnout for the final quiz of the season ~

Results starting v shortly, I'll try not to take forever with them. First a quick recap of the questions:

1. Name a song that charted in the UK top 40 after becoming popular on TikTok.
2. Name an artist whose highest charting song in the UK peaked at #2.
3. Name an album which missed the UK top 40 despite containing at least one UK top 10 single.
4. Name a song that is a cover or heavily samples another song and charted higher in the UK than the original version.
5. Name an artist who has had UK top 40 singles in at least four different decades.
6. Name an artist from Europe, not including the UK, who has had a UK top 40 single this year.
7. Name a charity single which did not reach #1 in the UK.
8. Name an artist who has at least one UK #1 album, but their highest selling album did not reach #1.
9. Name a song which reached the top 40 in the UK for the first time after the artist's death (having been released during their lifetime).
10. Name two artists that BuzzJack would complain endlessly about if they made a song together.

A quick note about question 10, I decided to grant an additional half point for each other respondent who answered one of the same two artists but a different second artist, so that question is worth a little more than the rest - I hope this will make sense when I get to the results for that question (it's turned out looking a little convoluted but I think it is a fair way to assess it magic.gif)

A few fun stats before we start:

- the lowest scoring top answers are worth just 4 points (for two different questions)
- only 4 questions have a top answer worth more than 10 points
- no question had more than half of respondents going for the same answer *
- there are 2 questions where all but one person got points
- there is at least one incorrect answer that was nonetheless worth points

Mystery and intrigue ~ question 1 results coming in a moment.

* which I am pleased about, this is what I was going for, I don't like overwhelming landslides in Family Fortunes xx

1. Name a song that charted in the UK top 40 after becoming popular on TikTok.

13 Doja Cat - Say So // *Callum, xajnipi, Josh!, girlsaloudjunkie, Jáhq, Scene, Bjork, Viper*, Klumzee, JosephStyles, Dan17F1, Jade, dj_tim_e, RobBot
3 Megan Thee Stallion - Savage // vibe, M4NGO, Lee_J11, West
3 Powfu - death bed (coffee for your head) (feat. beabadoobee) // awardinary, n4yr, LewisGT, MrAndrewMan

2 Drake - Toosie Slide // chrissmith276, Dobbo, Riser
2 Lil Nas X - Old Town Road // Bré, King Rollo, dan-G
2 Roddy Ricch - The Box // paulgilb, Jordan Lee, StoneDragon

0 Arizona Zervas - ROXANNE // jimwatts
0 Regard - Ride It // PeteFromLeeds

We start out with one of the more straightforward questions, albeit one where I did not get the runaway top answer - I was banking on there just being too many big hits of TikTok origin from the last few months without any one being more obvious than any others so went for the original TikTok hit from Lil Nas X but for some reason between all of the more recent TikTok hits it's 'Say So' that people gravitated to far more than any other. It is one of the best songs on this list to be fair, and by a female artist which should always be a consideration in BuzzJack quizzes, but I didn't think there'd be such a big gap nonetheless! This is actually the biggest gap between 1st and 2nd in the entire quiz, although 'Say So' isn't the highest scoring individual answer.

Of course all of these songs were massive on TikTok so there aren't really any 'wrong' answers per se, although I'd question whether 'Toosie Slide' really fits the bill considering it was an engineered TikTok hit compared to all the other answers being songs that were either album tracks or obscure songs by unknown artists before being picked up by the app. Nonetheless, it's worth 2 points. Commiserations to jimwatts and PeteFromLeeds who go home empty-handed from question 1 despite perfectly valid answers.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Jun 10 2020, 07:54 PM

I had no idea Say So was on Tik Tok!

Part of me was gonna for Savage though but picked The Box as I thought that was the biggest laugh.gif

Posted by: RobBot Jun 10 2020, 07:54 PM

WOIIII, Say So felt the first big 'plucked out of nowhere' Tik Tok hit to me that made me aware that that platform was so impactful, but maybe that's just cos of how much I love the song. I wasn't even aware that's why Old Town Road blew up, if I'm honest.

Posted by: Jade Jun 10 2020, 07:54 PM

Hooray, off to a good start *.* I really wasn't expecting such a convincing top answer for this ohmy.gif Doja Cat just really stood out for me personally as TikTok has done wonders for her career in general - see 'Candy' getting more exposure as well through that. Also the female artist thing and quite a recent massive hit.

Posted by: chrissmith276 Jun 10 2020, 07:56 PM

I thought Toosie Slide would be more popular as it made #1 very recently! Guess not haha.... I get the point it as kinda engineered for TikTok but it did premiere on there!

2. Name an artist whose highest charting song in the UK peaked at #2.

7 Sash! // Josh!, paulgilb, girlsaloudjunkie, Jordan Lee, n4yr, LewisGT, Klumzee, RobBot
6 Janet Jackson // chrissmith276, Jáhq, M4NGO, jimwatts, Dobbo, Jade, StoneDragon
5 Doja Cat // Scene, dan-G, West, Riser, JosephStyles, PeteFromLeeds
1 Amy Winehouse // Bjork, King Rollo
1 Avril Lavigne // Lee_J11, Viper*

0 Alicia Keys // *Callum
0 Bastille // awardinary
0 Carpenters // dj_tim_e
0 Dannii Minogue // vibe
0 Jonas Blue // MrAndrewMan
0 Lana Del Rey // Bré
0 Natalie Imbruglia // Dan17F1
0 Rag'n'Bone Man // xajnipi

Three pretty different trains of logic all arrived at similarly high scoring answers here - the top answer winds up being Sash! who of course has the record for most #2 hits without reaching #1 (doing so 5 times), but only just behind is Janet Jackson who's well known for being one of the overall most successful chart acts to never reach #1 (peaking at #2 twice) and then only another point behind that is Doja Cat who is the most popular choice of those plumping for someone who had a #2 hit very recently - see the previous result (though oddly enough only 2 people answered Doja Cat for both questions). Two other answers score a point each - Amy Winehouse whose big hit was her feature on Mark Ronson's 'Valerie', and Avril Lavigne who topped out at #2 with 'Girlfriend'.

Bastille, Carpenters, Jonas Blue, Natalie Imbruglia and Rag'n'Bone Man have all also had more than one #2 hit (3 for Bastille, 2 each for the others) without hitting the top but none of them are worth points here. Also worth nothing are Alicia Keys (whose only #2 was as a feature on Jay-Z's 'Empire State Of Mind'), Dannii Minogue (who got there with 'I Begin To Wonder') and, most damningly for my chances of doing well in my own quiz, Lana Del Rey (who peaked with Ariana Grande/Miley Cyrus collab 'Don't Call Me Angel', there was me thinking this was a good answer after the question about artists who have had #1 albums but not #1 singles in the last FF, boo xx).

Posted by: chrissmith276 Jun 10 2020, 08:12 PM

Ah Sash!! So many good songs.

Glad to pick up some decent points with Janet here though!

Posted by: Klumzee Jun 10 2020, 08:12 PM

Yay didn't expect 'Say So' to score so highly! I guess it's the most memorable Tik Tok song so far (bar Old Town Road but that was kinda before the app went mainstream)

Also yay at Sash! after the thread made a resurgence I thought I should've gone with a more well-known artist but I'm glad the chart geeks still reign on Buzzjack.

Posted by: Jade Jun 10 2020, 08:13 PM

Omg why does Janet Jackson never top these questions laugh.gif one day!!

Posted by: MrAndrewMan Jun 10 2020, 08:16 PM

No idea why but Say So didn't even cross my mind for Q1!

Not surprised that I didn't pick up any points with Jonas Blue - he was the only one I could think of but I kind of expected that no-one else would think the same. sleep.gif

Posted by: King Rollo Jun 10 2020, 08:18 PM

I was always going to struggle on Q1 as I didn't really know what TikTok was.

For Q2,I normally answer Janet Jackson for that type of question but for some reason, opted for Amy Winehouse instead.

Posted by: RobBot Jun 10 2020, 08:18 PM

WOIIII

Posted by: Scene Jun 10 2020, 08:22 PM

Shocked I was only one of two people who put Doja Cat for the first two answers. laugh.gif

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 10 2020, 08:25 PM

How did no-one else go for Ride It?! ohmy.gif wasn't it literally the first TikTok song to become a massive Top 10 hit.

I was toying between that and Truth Hurts as well, I really am out of touch.

Posted by: M4NGO Jun 10 2020, 08:27 PM

Had no idea that Say So was made popular by Tiktok but at least I went for the second most popular answer! How on earth did more people put Sash! than Janet Jackson when she literally always comes up in these discussions whenever they're had on the site?!

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 10 2020, 08:30 PM

And for some reason, despite knowing that Janet Jackson nearly always wins these polls, I decided to go with Doja for Q2 drama.gif

3. Name an album which missed the UK top 40 despite containing at least one UK top 10 single.

4 Kesha - Warrior // Bré, dan-G, Riser, Klumzee, RobBot
2 Emma Bunton - Life In Mono // Lee_J11, Viper*, dj_tim_e
2 Mariah Carey - Charmbracelet // paulgilb, Bjork, JosephStyles
2 Tones And I - The Kids Are Coming // Scene, jimwatts, Dan17F1

1 DJ Snake - Encore // xajnipi, PeteFromLeeds
1 Doja Cat - Hot Pink // Josh!, Dobbo
1 SAINt JHN - Collection One // King Rollo, West

0 Boney M. - Gold // M4NGO
0 The Chainsmokers - Collage // StoneDragon

0 Pitbull - Global Warming // *Callum
0 Pixie Lott - Platinum Pixie: Hits // Jade
0 Portugal. The Man - Woodstock // n4yr
0 Tyga - Legendary // awardinary
0 [no answer] // MrAndrewMan

Unsurprisingly this winds up being one of the questions with the lowest score for its top answer - I was expecting this to be very spread out as I thought it wouldn't be too difficult to find a valid answer, but it may be tough for people's logical trains to coincide. As it were, the album I had in mind that inspired this question was Kesha's 2nd studio album 'Warrior' which, released deep into Q4, left a rather rough looking stain on her chart discography by peaking at just #60 despite its lead single 'Die Young' peaking at #7. And that was indeed the top answer, worth a whopping 4 points. Go me.

3 albums apiece were worth either 2 points or 1 point. First among the 2 pointers is Emma Bunton's 'Life In Mono' which seems to be a similar case to Kesha of being screwed over by a Q4 release date, peaking at #65 while home to #3 hit 'Downtown'. I didn't know this was a thing so this is education! Then there's Mariah Carey's somewhat infamous flop 'Charmbracelet', #52 in the UK with #8 peaking single 'Through The Rain', and finally there's Tones And I's EP 'The Kids Are Coming' which is of course home to the monster #1 hit 'Dance Monkey' but never registered at all on the albums chart (I'm assuming it wasn't eligible to chart due to being too short). Then worth a point each are DJ Snake's 'Encore' (#46 in the albums chart and home to #2 peaking 'Let Me Love You' and #10 peaking 'Middle'), SAINt JHN's 'Collection One' (never charted, but home to the original version of 'Roses' which hit #1 following the popularity of Imanbek's remix) and most curiously Doja Cat's 'Hot Pink' which is actually an incorrect answer as it peaked at #38 in the albums chart, but being correct is not a requirement to be worth points so the two of you have got lucky!

I won't comment in detail about all the other answers as we'll be here forever but as I expected the route of going for a greatest hits album is fruitless as although 3 people went for one, they all picked different artists so alas it's 0 points for all three. The other answers (bar MrAndrewMan's lack of an answer) are all correct but also worth nothing. (Incidentally I always thought that Jack Ü album was just ineligible to chart for some reason but it does have a peak of #131 according to Wikipedia so I guess it was just a bizarrely massive underperformance).

I went for the most recent no.1 single that wasn't from a top 40 album. At least someone else chose the same one.

Not challenging anyone on #2 but "highest-charting song" implied just one song, not five, which is why I didn't go for Sash tongue.gif On the other hand 'Say So' didn't even cross my mind for a TikTok song, it doesn't help that I don't use TikTok but its popularity seems well and truly beyond that app that I forgot it originated from there!

Ha same - I looked up the chart history and saw it had made #38 or #39 so put something else!

Posted by: Bré Jun 10 2020, 08:49 PM

4. Name a song that is a cover or heavily samples another song and charted higher in the UK than the original version.

8 Calum Scott - Dancing On My Own // Jordan Lee, jimwatts, Lee_J11, Viper*, Riser, LewisGT, Klumzee, Dan17F1, Jade
7 Kygo and Whitney Houston - Higher Love // Bré, xajnipi, Josh!, Jáhq, Dobbo, n4yr, JosephStyles, MrAndrewMan
2 Madonna - American Pie // vibe, girlsaloudjunkie, M4NGO
1 Joel Corry - Sorry // awardinary, chrissmith276
1 Leona Lewis - Run // Scene, Bjork
1 Live Lounge Allstars - Times Like These // paulgilb, PeteFromLeeds

0 Ellie Goulding - River // West
0 Joe McElderry - The Climb // *Callum
0 Jonas Blue - Fast Car (feat. Dakota) // dan-G
0 Madonna - Hung Up // dj_tim_e
0 Natalie Imbruglia - Torn // King Rollo
0 Nathan Dawe - Flowers (feat. Jaykae) // StoneDragon
0 Regard - Ride It // RobBot

The top answer here was a competitive one as well, with two answers running well ahead of everything else. Just about reaching the top is Calum Scott's soul-destroying mangling of Robyn's 'Dancing On My Own', finishing a point ahead of Kygo's slightly less soul-destroying, but still somewhat soul-destroying, mangling of Whitney Houston's cover of 'Higher Love' by Steve Winwood. Both songs peaked at #2, easily beating the original versions (Robyn got to #8 and Winwood got to #13).

Four other answers are worth a point or two. There are two points for Madonna's take on 'American Pie' which hit #1 besting the #2 peak of the Don McLean original. One point for those who went for Joel Corry's soul-destroying mangling of Monsta Boy's 'Sorry (I Didn't Know)' (peaking at #6, well ahead of the original's unjust #25), Leona Lewis' actually rather good rendition of Snow Patrol's 'Run' (#1 compared to #5 for the original) and the Live Lounge Allstars charity version of Foo Fighters' 'Times Like These' (#1 just a few weeks ago while the original stalled at a shockingly low #12).

Ellie Goulding's 'River', another recent #1 and a cover of the Joni Mitchell song that has never charted, isn't worth anything however. Neither is Joe McElderry's #1 (but not Christmas #1) version of Miley Cyrus' #11 hit 'The Climb', or a couple more dance remakes that peaked at #2 in recent years (Jonas Blue & Dakota's 'Fast Car' and Regard's 'Ride It', covers of the Tracy Chapman and Jay Sean tracks that peaked at #4 and #11 respectively). dj_tim_e was bravely the only person to go for a song that used only an instrumental sample - a correct answer as 'Hung Up' peaked at #1 while ABBA's 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)' only got to #3, but it's also not worth any points. Finally we have an incorrect answer as thankfully Nathan Dawe & Jaykae's soul-destroying mangling of 'Flowers' by Sweet Female Attitude hasn't yet outpeaked the #2 original, and let's pray it never does.

edit: reading this back I realise that I totally forgot to comment on Natalie Imbruglia's 'Torn', which was a #2 hit that a lot of people don't know was a cover (the original version by Ednaswap did not chart). That answer was also not worth any points unfortunately.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 10 2020, 08:51 PM

SO annoyed at that one! I was incredibly close to putting Calum but thought Live Lounge Allstars would get more people as a recent #1.

Posted by: chrissmith276 Jun 10 2020, 08:52 PM

I nearly went for Higher Love as well but thought a song that had a lot of hate on here (Sorry) would garner more points! sad.gif

Posted by: Scene Jun 10 2020, 08:53 PM

I was sure many would (wrongly kink.gif) put Zayn's megaflop Icarus Falls for #3. Dusk Till Dawn was only on the Japanese edition but I thought some might've assumed it was on the standard edition. laugh.gif

Posted by: Bré Jun 10 2020, 08:53 PM

(Calum Scott genuinely didn't come to my mind at all, that's probably the most surprising top answer for me - I thought for sure most people would go with one of the more recent songs (i.e. Kygo, Joel Corry, Regard etc.))

Posted by: Jade Jun 10 2020, 08:55 PM

Back in the game *.* 'Dancing On My Own' recently celebrating its 10 year anniversary put it back in my mind! Plus the memorably dull cover of course :')

Posted by: vibe Jun 10 2020, 08:55 PM

I thought more people would have remembered Girl by Dannii. Check out the album it is very good !!

I nearly chose higher Love !!

5. Name an artist who has had UK top 40 singles in at least four different decades.

15 Madonna // awardinary, *Callum, xajnipi, vibe, paulgilb, girlsaloudjunkie, Scene, Bjork, King Rollo, Jordan Lee, M4NGO, Viper*, West, Jade, StoneDragon, dj_tim_e
8 Eminem // Bré, dan-G, jimwatts, Dobbo, LewisGT, Klumzee, JosephStyles, Dan17F1, PeteFromLeeds
2 Cliff Richard // chrissmith276, n4yr, Riser
1 Cher // Jáhq, Lee_J11
1 Kylie Minogue // Josh!, RobBot

0 Michael Jackson // MrAndrewMan

Now this is a question that I really worried as I was adding up would turn out to be a massive landslide that I'd let slip through the net - Madonna got to 10 points before anyone else even had 1 point! Thankfully after that the answers I received became a lot more diverse. Madonna still remained fairly comfortably the top answer though, and has the joint highest scoring answer of the entire round (excluding the bonus points in Q10) - but with only 16/33 people answering her, there are still fewer people getting the top answer than not. Madge had hits aplenty in the 80s, 90s and 00s but only gets to be a valid answer for the question by virtue of scoring 2 pretty minor and short lived top 40 hits in the 10s.

The runner-up is Eminem who has scored a #1 hit in the 20s already, after also having #1s in the 00s and 10s and a top 2 hit in the 90s. He's the only artist on here who's had a top 40 hit in the 20s so far. Madonna and Eminem account for most of the answers I received but three other answers were still worthy of points. Cliff Richard, who had top 40 hits in not four but six decades (50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s, though he broke his streak in the 10s sadly), is worth 2 points, while there's a point each for Cher (who's also clocked up six decades, 60s through 10s, with the potential to still maybe expand that to a 7th decade in a row) and Kylie Minogue (who also has the 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s but actually had a major hit in the 10s unlike Madonna). Big oof for MrAndrewMan who has the only non-scoring answer of the round with Michael Jackson (who's charted in each decade from the 70s through the 10s).

Posted by: chrissmith276 Jun 10 2020, 09:08 PM

Damn - big points missed there!!

Went with Cliff as he had had 6 decades!

Posted by: RobBot Jun 10 2020, 09:09 PM

I really thought Kylie would do much better there, given her fanbase on this site sad.gif

Posted by: Jordan Lee Jun 10 2020, 09:12 PM

Yes at having 3/5 top answers!

Kesha was what I thought would be top answer too for the non top 40 album question. I ended up picking Kelis off just loving the album. laugh.gif

I knew Calum would top q4 I did initially put Leona but changed my mind before sending my answers as I know that cover gets spoken of so much on this Robyn stan filled forum.

The highest peaking song being a #2 could’ve went either way. I thought of Sash as I knew they had the record for most #2s without a chart topper but my own FF quiz seen recency get certain top answers so I was gonna say Doja. Janet though was another good answer she often gets mentioned on this site for questions relating to non chart topping acts.

Posted by: Jade Jun 10 2020, 09:12 PM

I did consider both Eminem and Kylie but Madonna edged it, glad I made the right choice wub.gif

Posted by: Klumzee Jun 10 2020, 09:15 PM

I didn't really consider anyone who had 80's through to the 10's. Eminem just came up as he was the first artist to have a number in 00's, 10's and 20's. Madonna definitely is an obvious answer here! Would someone like Cher be a correct answer too?

Posted by: King Rollo Jun 10 2020, 09:18 PM

I expected that one to be fairly even between Madonna,Kylie and Cliff.

Posted by: Bré Jun 10 2020, 09:21 PM

6. Name an artist from Europe, not including the UK, who has had a UK top 40 single this year.

15 Dađi Freyr // Bré, *Callum, chrissmith276, xajnipi, girlsaloudjunkie, Jáhq, Bjork, n4yr, Lee_J11, Viper*, JosephStyles, Dan17F1, Jade, PeteFromLeeds, StoneDragon, dj_tim_e

2 Regard // paulgilb, West, MrAndrewMan
1 Martin Solveig // Scene, M4NGO
1 Niall Horan // Josh!, Klumzee

0 Halsey // vibe
0 Meduza // awardinary

This is a question that I thought had the potential to be a landslide, but thought it'd be an interesting one as I saw two equally possible logical trains of thought from the wording of the question - and I turned out to be pretty much bang on as the answers are split near enough 50/50 between those who thought 'Eurovision' and those who thought 'faceless DJs'. Eurovision is of course the less divided choice so the top answer by a decent margin is Dađi Freyr from Iceland, whose #34 peaking 'Think About Things' may not seem to be a super obvious first thought given its pretty low peak but it is certainly memorable for being the first Eurovision song to make the top 40 for 5 years despite Eurovision not actually taking place in the end this year. Dađi is the other joint highest scoring answer of the round.

There were several possible faceless European DJs to choose from, but the winner out of those is perhaps unsurprisingly German DJ Topic who is currently riding high in the charts with 'Breaking Me' with A7S thus far peaking at #5, he's worth 7 points. Regard, hailing from Kosovo, is worth 2 points - his big hit 'Ride It' of course first charted last year but he's got a second top 40 hit 'Secrets' rising in the chart as we speak as well, so far peaking at #18. Then we have Frenchman Martin Solveig, worth 1 point after hitting #21 earlier in the year as half of the Europa project with 'Tequila'. (Incidentally 'Secrets' and 'Tequila' are of course both collabs with RAYE). The only correct answer here that isn't either Eurovision or a DJ is Niall Horan, the token Irish member of One Direction, who got to #32 this year with 'No Judgement' and is also worth 1 point.

Italian act Meduza have been in the top 40 this year with Becky Hill/GOODBOYS collab 'Lose Control' though the song first charted last year so perhaps unsurprisingly that answer isn't worth any points. Even less surprisingly there's no points on offer for Halsey, primarily because unless I've missed some major geopolitical news the USA is not part of Europe.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 10 2020, 09:22 PM

Yay at actually ending up on the right side of a split for once!

I didn't really consider anyone who had 80's through to the 10's. Eminem just came up as he was the first artist to have a number in 00's, 10's and 20's. Madonna definitely is an obvious answer here! Would someone like Cher be a correct answer too?

Cher was among the scoring answers so yes kink.gif

Is Eminem actually the only person who's had top 40 hits in the 90s, 00s, 10s and 20s thinking.gif amazing if he is considering he's had not only top 40 hits but top 2 hits in all 4 decades. (Of course there's a ton of time left in this decade for more people to join that list laugh.gif)

Lmao I thought Halsey was from Europe just become of her sound. I should have googled !

Posted by: Klumzee Jun 10 2020, 09:33 PM

AH. Dađi Freyr was my first thought but I didn't think enough people would both spelling out his name cry.gif Probably the most obvious answer thanks to the Europe/Eurovision link.

Thought I might have made the wrong choice with Topic soon after sending in my answers! Eminem vs Madonna was a near 50/50 choice for me too. At least neither were a complete landslide!

7. Name a charity single which did not reach #1 in the UK.

7 Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber - Stuck With U // Bré, awardinary, Bjork, King Rollo, dan-G, LewisGT, Klumzee, StoneDragon
5 Matt Lucas - Thank You Baked Potato // chrissmith276, girlsaloudjunkie, M4NGO, West, MrAndrewMan, PeteFromLeeds
4 Amanda Holden - Over The Rainbow // Josh!, Viper*, JosephStyles, Dan17F1, RobBot
4 The Saturdays - Just Can't Get Enough // *Callum, paulgilb, Jáhq, Scene, Jordan Lee

1 The Collective - Teardrop // n4yr, Jade
1 Spice Girls - Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) // vibe, dj_tim_e

0 Brian Wilson and Various Artists - God Only Knows // Dobbo
0 Little Mix - Word Up! // Lee_J11
0 Mariah Carey et al. ["Artists Stand Up To Cancer"] - Just Stand Up! // jimwatts
0 The RSPB - Let Nature Sing // Riser
0 Vera Lynn and Katherine Jenkins - We'll Meet Again // xajnipi

A pretty decent spread of answers here - easy to think of charity songs that have got to #1 but what about the more forgettable ones that didn't achieve that peak? Most of these answers are your standard charity single fare (bland covers and/or 'all-star' ensembles and/or novelty songs) but the top answer is actually just a normal song that happened to have its proceeds go to charity, that being the recent Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber collab 'Stuck With U', supporting the First Responders Children's Foundation. Being an American-centric charity perhaps the charity appeal didn't cross over too much to the UK contributing to it only managing to peak at #4 (though it did get to #1 in the States, much to the chagrin of a certain Mr. 9ine).

Three other answers pick up a good handful of points. There have been a whole lot of other charity singles in the last couple of months supporting the NHS and other causes relating to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and while two of them did manage to get to #1 there are many, many more that didn't, and two more of those are worth points here. 5 points for Matt Lucas' delightfully silly jingle 'Thank You Baked Potato' which unjustly got no further than #34, and 4 points for Amanda Holden's entirely unneeded take on the classic 'Over The Rainbow' which justly got no further than #53. The other three points-scoring answers are digging a few years back in the chart books. A surprisingly high 4 points are on offer for The Saturdays' take on Depeche Mode's 'Just Can't Get Enough', a Comic Relief single which peaked at #2. Then there is a point each for two Children In Need singles - the unimaginatively named The Collective, a group of primarily UK hip-hop artists (plus Ed Sheeran because of course), whose version of the wonderful 'Teardrop' by Massive Attack peaked at #24, and Spice Girls' 'Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)' which proved to be a damp squib of a chart comeback as it landed at just #11 in contrast to all of the singles in their original run making the top 2.

There's one more COVID-19 single among the non-scorers, that being the Katherine Jenkins-aided duet version of 'We'll Meet Again' by Vera Lynn which sadly only got as high as #72 (ahead of the original Vera solo version finally charting at #55 a few weeks later in commemoration of VE Day). Also valid answers but not picking up points are the ill-fated BBC Music ensemble version of The Beach Boys' 'God Only Knows' for Children In Need (peaked at #20), Little Mix's Sport Relief rendition of Cameo's 'Word Up!' (peaked at #6), the superstar ensemble cut 'Just Stand Up!' supporting the Stand Up To Cancer telethon (peaked at #26) and most charmingly of all The RSPB's birdsong recording 'Let Nature Sing' (which provided some nice fresh air last year charting as high as #18).

Posted by: Jade Jun 10 2020, 09:49 PM

I was so close to putting 'Stuck With U' but thought people would gravitate towards a typical charity group effort more sad.gif at least someone else put 'Teardrop' laugh.gif

Btw late thought but I guess Beyoncé has had a top 40 hit from the 90s to the 20s if you include Destiny's Child and 'Savage'!

8. Name an artist who has at least one UK #1 album, but their highest selling album did not reach #1.

4 Christina Aguilera // chrissmith276, vibe, girlsaloudjunkie, Scene, Lee_J11
4 Dua Lipa // Bjork, M4NGO, dan-G, Riser, RobBot

3 Justin Bieber // Bré, jimwatts, West, PeteFromLeeds
2 Ariana Grande // awardinary, Josh!, Dobbo
2 Meat Loaf // Viper*, MrAndrewMan, StoneDragon
2 Pink Floyd // paulgilb, King Rollo, Jade
1 Beyoncé // n4yr, Dan17F1
1 One Direction // Jáhq, JosephStyles

0 All Saints // dj_tim_e
0 Gerry Cinnamon // LewisGT
0 Imagine Dragons // xajnipi
0 Kanye West // Klumzee
0 Nicki Minaj // *Callum
0 P!nk // Jordan Lee

This is another very spread out question and the only one which has a joint top answer - though as with question 3 those top answers are worth a mere 4 points. First we have Christina Aguilera, who didn't cross my mind at all but it does indeed appear that her best-selling album is the #2 peaking 'Stripped' while she got to #1 with two of her other albums. Then we have Dua Lipa who I did consider but thought it's maybe a bit premature - of course so far her #3 peaking self-titled debut currently has a higher sales total than the #1 follow-up 'Future Nostalgia' but we'll see how that stacks up a few years into the future thinking.gif My own answer of Justin Bieber comes in just behind with 3 points - his chart history is a little misleading as while 'My World' and 'Purpose' only peaked at #3 and #2 respectively, they both have much, much higher sales totals than both of his #1 albums (I believe x).

There's a solid handful of other answers worth a point or two - Ariana Grande has three #1 albums to her name now but none have yet outsold #3 peaking 'My Everything', while I am assuming that Meat Loaf and Pink Floyd's best selling albums are by far and away 'Bat Out Of Hell' and 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' respectively despite peaking at #9 (!) and #2 while each act has multiple #1 albums. All three of those are worth 2 points. Then there's Beyoncé who has three #1s but assuming her top seller is 'I Am... Sasha Fierce' which peaked at #2, and One Direction who I'll trust Joseph is correct about - all of their albums got to #1 except for the debut 'Up All Night' which peaked at #2 and I guess must still be their highest selling album. They are both worth 1 point.

I won't comment on the non-scoring answers to save some time but I'm going to confess that I'm not sure if all of these are right - I don't think any of them look obviously wrong, they certainly all have #1 albums and high selling non #1 albums, but it's too much effort to verify them for sure (would appreciate if anyone has the intel to name and shame if anyone got this wrong).

Posted by: Jade Jun 10 2020, 10:06 PM

#2 album 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' is one of the best selling albums ever drama.gif should've known that wouldn't be BuzzJack friendly enough.

(oops at me snubbing Ariana again)

Posted by: King Rollo Jun 10 2020, 10:12 PM

Dark Side Of The Moon is the first album on the best sellers list (in 7th place) not to reach number 1 so I chose Pink Floyd for that one based on that logic.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Jun 10 2020, 10:13 PM

Xtina is an all time fave of mine but really didn’t expect her to top that poll for biggest selling album not being a #1 despite having 2 #1s (or more).

I was torn between P!nk and Ariana and ended up going with P!nk.

Glad I wasn’t the only one to put Saturdays for the charity release question though. I remember the chart battle of that week and it looking like it was gonna go their way until Flo Rida blocked them laugh.gif it then followed The Sats multiple times that they’d be midweek number one until chart day! Bless them at least they got a chart topper in the end!

9. Name a song which reached the top 40 in the UK for the first time after the artist's death (having been released during their lifetime).

7 Amy Winehouse - Love Is A Losing Game // girlsaloudjunkie, Scene, Jordan Lee, dan-G, jimwatts, Lee_J11, Viper*, Klumzee
5 Viola Beach - Swings & Waterslides // *Callum, Jáhq, n4yr, LewisGT, Jade, StoneDragon
4 Freddie Mercury - Living On My Own // awardinary, xajnipi, vibe, Bjork, dj_tim_e
2 Pop Smoke - Dior // Bré, Riser, PeteFromLeeds
2 XXXTENTACION - changes // chrissmith276, JosephStyles, RobBot
1 Elvis Presley - Way Down // paulgilb, M4NGO
1 Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah // King Rollo, West

0 Eva Cassidy - Over The Rainbow // Josh!
0 Frankie Knuckles - Your Love // Dobbo
0 XXXTENTACION - SAD! // Dan17F1
0 [no answer] // MrAndrewMan

Here's a top answer I missed that I really shouldn't have - of course following the sad premature passing of Amy Winehouse, the injustice of the gorgeous 'Love Is A Losing Game', one of my favourite songs of hers, missing the top 40 was posthumously corrected as its peak improved from #46 to #33. That is worth 7 points. Slightly behind on 5 points are Viola Beach who tragically didn't see any chart success during their lifetime but raced to #11 with 'Swings & Waterslides' following the shocking news of the entire band passing away in a car accident. There's also a solid 4 points for Freddie Mercury's 'Living On My Own' which was a blip on the charts on its original release, peaking at just #50, but later became a #1 following a posthumous re-release.

Four more answers are worth a point or two. I opted for the most recent correct answer, Pop Smoke's 'Dior' which gave the rapper his first UK top 40 appearance reaching #33 earlier this year after his murder at the tragically young age of 20, having not charted during his lifetime. That's worth 2 points, as is another song by a rapper also murdered at age 20, the ever controversial XXXTENTACION who took 'changes' into the chart at #22 in the wake of his death after originally peaking at #71. There's also a point each for 'Way Down' by Elvis Presley, released very shortly before his death and initially looking like it might stall outside the top 40 but quickly zooming to the #1 spot posthumously, and Jeff Buckley's version of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' which did not chart during his lifetime but got a well deserved #2 peak in the Christmas chart of 2008, beaten to the #1 spot only by the soul-destroying mangling of the same song by X Factor winner Alexandra Burke.

There's only one other correct answer here but it scores no points - nonetheless, a brilliant song named by Dobbo, as Frankie Knuckles' house classic 'Your Love' initially charted at just #59 but got to #29 in the immediate wake of his passing. MrAndrewMan passed on finding an answer for this question as well, while Josh! and Dan17F1 had a crack but both have incorrect answers, as Eva Cassidy's 'Over The Rainbow' is still to this day not a top 40 hit (peaking at #42) and while XXXTENTACION's 'SAD!' did hit a new peak after his death, it was already a top 40 hit prior to that.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Jun 10 2020, 10:23 PM

I’m shocked I managed top answer with Amy Winehouse there!

Just bc of the peak more than anything it was the first to come to mind but I felt like I missed a really obvious #1 or long running top ten or something!

Posted by: Jade Jun 10 2020, 10:24 PM

Omg I checked for Amy Winehouse and thought that 'Love Is A Losing Game' had made the top 40 anyway, was definitely rushing drama.gif

Glad Viola Beach was still good enough for 2nd at least.

10. Name two artists that BuzzJack would complain endlessly about if they made a song together.

11+1+5 = 17 Drake & Ed Sheeran // Bré, Jordan Lee, jimwatts, n4yr, Lee_J11, Riser, LewisGT, JosephStyles, Jade, PeteFromLeeds, StoneDragon, RobBot
2+2+9.5 = 13.5 Anne-Marie & Ed Sheeran // chrissmith276, dan-G, Dan17F1
4+8.5+0 = 12.5 Ed Sheeran & Lewis Capaldi // *Callum, girlsaloudjunkie, Bjork, King Rollo, M4NGO
0+10.5+1.5 = 12 Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber // Viper*
0+0+10.5 = 10.5 6ix9ine & Ed Sheeran // xajnipi
1+6+0.5 = 7.5 Drake & Justin Bieber // Scene, Dobbo
1+2.5+1 = 4.5 Anne-Marie & Jessie J // awardinary, West
1+2.5+0.5 = 4 Anne-Marie & Jess Glynne // Klumzee, MrAndrewMan
0+1+1.5 = 2.5 Jess Glynne & Jessie J // Josh!
0+1.5+0.5 = 2 Justin Bieber & Madonna // dj_tim_e
0+1.5+0 = 1.5 Jessie J & Sam Smith // Jáhq
0+0+0.5 = 0.5 Ariana Grande & Madonna // vibe

0+0+0 = 0 Little Mix & XXXTENTACION // paulgilb

And finally we have this convoluted mess, I hope this isn't entirely impossible to follow - for example, Drake & Ed Sheeran get 11 points for 12 people answering Drake & Ed Sheeran, an additional 1 point for 2 people giving other Drake & someone else answers, and an additional 5 points for 10 people giving other Ed Sheeran & someone else answers. If I've made a mathematical error anywhere in this thread it's probably here so if anyone is bored enough to triple check my counting please go ahead laugh.gif

Answers combining Ed Sheeran with some other hated artist are unsurprisingly very popular, to the point where the bonus half points for the answer 6ix9ine & Ed Sheeran are enough for that to be higher than any answer not involving Ed Sheeran, despite no one else naming 6ix9ine at all. 22 out of 33 answers named Ed Sheeran, with 12 of those pairing him with Drake. Of course Ed and Drake have been perhaps the 2 most omnipresent artists everyone loves to moan about on this forum so a potential collab between them would definitely not be received too kindly. I think that sounds like something I'd probably like though. x

Other much maligned artists Anne-Marie, Jess Glynne, Jessie J and Justin Bieber were named in a couple of different combinations and Madonna was also paired with two different artists for some reason. Lewis Capaldi was only named in conjunction with the Sheeran (so we apparently wouldn't mind him collaborating with anyone else!) We also have token namedrops for Sam Smith and for some reason Ariana Grande, and it's sad times for paulgilb as he took a slightly different route to everyone else as he paired the much loved Little Mix with the much hated XXXTENTACION and gets 0 points out of it as no one else named either.

The bonus points mostly don't make a huge difference to the order of these aside from the aforementioned large boost for '6ix9ine & Ed Sheeran' (as well as 'Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber') which would otherwise have not scored any points, but worth noting that while Sheeran & Capaldi was the second most popular duo, it finishes behind Anne-Marie & Sheeran because of more people naming different theoretical Anne-Marie collabs.

Thanks to all who have sticked around for all the results posts - I haven't yet totalled up the final scores (so have as much of an idea of who won as anyone else does!), I shall go about that now so expect a very late night drop of them, mystery and tension in the mean time!

The tension is real! I think I'll do better than expected considering I put very little effort into this and haven't played Family Fortunes in years. Perhaps top 10? I think the European artist question was the biggest killer along with the last one.

Congrats Jade, the second time you have won a Family Fortunes hosted by me!! *.* What kind of slay. (Not rigged I promise x)

A very close run race between the top 3, with the final question proving to be decisive!

Additional congrats to Viper*, Bjork, JosephStyles and Scene who were the only players to score points from every question (a shame for the latter missing the top 10 despite scoring this quite difficult achievement, also notable that both of the top 2 got 0 points on question 3 so that question really turned out to be just for interest with little impact on the results, same for question 8).

The list of players who got top answers on more than half of the questions is even shorter - a bunch of people got 5/10 but special congrats to girlsaloudjunkie and Klumzee going over and above with 6/10! (Though again, interestingly neither of them won and Klumzee actually missed the top 10 entirely, Q10 really being a killer for his chances, oof!)

Happy with a top 10 finish for myself after the horrible start I got off to in those first 2 questions laugh.gif

I typically leave ties unbroken but if Dan wants to break ties in some way for the leaderboard the points breakdowns are there so you can work it out from the spreadsheet ~

A quick bump because it looks like, unless the song in question ends up missing the top 40, he'll finally have company (excluding the loophole example of Beyoncé, and assuming I'm still not forgetting anyone else) from this week in the form of... Tina Turner. Who saw that coming? laugh.gif Tina Turner will in fact have got at least one top 40 appearance in every decade since the 60s ohmy.gif

(she didn't get any new top 40 hits in the 2010s but 'The Best' did re-enter at #9 for a week in 2010 so it counts x)
