You've all had the chance to hate, and we got 32 voters dishing out a combined 3966 hate points! Which song has the most hate points this year though, there's only one way to find out and that's to follow this thread where me and co-host UltraXmasWitch will reveal, in order, the 48 most hated songs of the year.

Some fun facts before we get going:

• we were spared from Silentó (last year's "winner") this year {although he does appear on a remix of Dawin's 'Dessert' which was R1-playlisted}, so we definitely have a new "winner".
• the song with the most nominations was Calum Scott's 'Dancing On My Own', which got a mammoth 18 nominations, 6 more than any other song. whether this will translate into a "victory" for him is yet to be seen.
• you didn't like Drake at all this year! he has SIX entries in this year's hate chart shortlist.
• Drake's partner in crime Rihanna is the second most hated artist of the year. She has four entries, although she is the featured artist for three of these.
• Other artists with multiple appearances are Calvin Harris, DNCE, Meghan Trainor and Shawn Mendes - as well as Niall Horan who has one solo entry and one as part of One Direction, and Ty Dolla $ign who features on two hated songs.

I'm not really sure what there is to hate about this, and that's probably why it finishes last here with only 11 points (and 2 voters). Well I guess Hailee does make the metaphor for sex a bit TOO obvious, and the drop is another future bass vocal chopping effort, a trait that annoyed quite a few people this year. But really, this is a mostly inoffensive song, and I love it myself. Ultra probably loves it even more.

Now here's a song I don't like. Usually I like these future bass songs but this one is annoying. Have you ever considered Nelly, the reason you feel like a millionaire is because you have a net worth of $60 million?!? Well, that was until he was charged $2m in tax bills by the IRS #oops, but he's still rich. It also got used on The X Factor Talk Talk ad break every Saturday which really did my head in banghead.gif. The chorus is just annoying and overall the song doesn't work. Which is a shame, because I like ~99% of chart EDM. sad.gif

The main problem about this song is just how slow and boring it is. It just plods along and goes nowhere. I'm not a fan of Ariana but she can do good songs, so it was a huge disappointment when this is what came out of her for her lead single. And it just had to spend seven weeks between #24-25 to spite me. dry.gif Thanks a lot, British public/Radio 1.

I love Starving, Dangerous Woman and Pillowtalk, but Millionaire is crap. It wasn't the XF breaks for me but one of my housemates who'd play it ALL the time blaring out loud... I didn't particularly like it in the first place but it was probably the sort of song I'd leave on if it came on the radio etc., now I would skip it.

Starving and Dangerous Woman are both utterly fantastic and should be nowhere near this low down sad.gif The former is one of my songs of the year and the latter is stunning! wub.gif

Pillowtalk isn't amazing but is better than most of the songs here so wouldn't have it much higher than 45th! Millionaire is poor but there's worse!

Glad Starving is last here. I don't see what the problem to hate it was either really... maybe it was the lyrics 'I was Starving till I tasted you' sometimes lyrics like that can make people dislike it i suppose but it's a really good song wub.gif

I didn't mind 'Millionaire' personally. The other two are ok too!

Oops starting off with a song that I really like is a good start for a hatechart! laugh.gif Don't Mind is by FAR the best of the recent hits in this style which has infested the charts in recent years (e.g. Drake, see below for more bashing) and this is kinda a bit of a jam. Don't love it but I wouldn't turn it off if it was on the radio and glad it didn't come too much higher than this!

And now time to start the hating *.* And lets start it with an artist I really hate, one who will be popping up 6 times over the course of this countdown. And if your hoping for some positive commentary to come later in this countdown for Drake, then you're in tough luck as I'll be covering ALL 6 horrors! tongue.gif And first up is the 2nd Drake song to enter the top 40 this year, entering just over 2 months before Drake domination was crap. Summer Sixteen was awful, not Hotline Bling bad comparing it to his songs released before this, but a bunch of noise and it was worrying this would become a bit of a big hit. Well thank gosh it only got 5 weeks in the top 75 and I've pretty much erased the song out of my head nowadays, thank gosh *.*

42. Calvin Harris ft. Rihanna - This Is What You Came For

I tried to like this. Like really tried to like this. But it is just so generic and not the good kind either. Also hanging around in the top 10 forever didn't help it either and this is easily one of the biggest disappointments of 2016. Disappointment really summing up what has been a terrible year for Calvin Harris music-wise (RiRi at least had like half of Anti which is great), not liked a song of his since How Deep Is Your Love (I realise that wasn't too long ago in terms of Calvin releases but still!). This just still falls utterly flat whenever I hear it, so dull and really crap. The drop is awful, this completely, utterly and unsurprisingly pails in comparison to the masterpiece of We Found Love (which slays but is still overrated oops). Would have this higher definitely, one of 2016's worst big chart hits. And one of the rare misfires (joining Innocent and The Last Time) from Queen Taylor, who co-wrote the lyrics as 'Nils something' (I cba to look it up!)!

This may well be one of the most embarrassing comebacks of all time. Fergie had already started going downhill when she released "how many cities/countries I can name in one song?" but "Milf Money" is just unlistenable. I've still yet to listen to it in its entirety, because thankfully it didn't go top 40 or get played by radio. It all seems like a desperate "look how sexy I am" attempt at a publicity stunt, but the song just doesn't work at all. It's so annoying which is a shame as she could have easily made a "so bad it's good" tune out of this, in this case though she did not. That album's never getting released is it?

I dont hate M.I.L.F.$ I just dissappointed. I think the most annoying thing about the release was that video. It really doesnt suit well with the theme of the song. Its just sexualised for no reason laugh.gif

Starving really shouldn't be last, it's laughably terrible lyrically and production wise, Zedd must've been pretty far gone when he OK'd this.

yay for BuzzJack seeing some sort of sense and keeping This Is What You Came For out of the top 40 *.*

MILF$ really should've finished higher though, it's awful.

Don't Mind is a jam and Summer Sixteen is fairly good, though Drake outdid himself many times since that being released.

Drake really shouldn't finish at #1 but it would hardly surprise me if he does.

That Fergie song is terrible, but don't hate any others. The ones I have heard are okay or I can understand why they were hits. Don't Mind and Summer Sixteen are good.

So let's kick this section off with double Drake hating *.* Next up is Too Good, the best song Drake released this year. But by being the best of his 2016 material, that's like a 1.5/10. Could never get into this and its a really weak collaboration, and once again hung around for far far too long. I'm not the biggest fan of the dancehall genre at all and this definitely fits into one of my least favourite songs from it and one of the worst of 2016.

And we have already lost half of the Drake songs in this countdown and we haven't even reached 10 songs yet sad.gif And a song that I thought (and really deserves) to be much higher in the list than this, in the form of I will never bloody leave the top spot Once Dance. The song really is utterly so non noteworthy, it really is a mystery how it became so massive. I literally couldn't tell you how the song sounded after about 10 weeks at the top spot. It is a pretty bad song made 1000x worse by that horrifyingly long chart-run and the fact this became such a massive hit. In my worst 3 songs in this countdown here, it really is utter crap and yeah, should be much higher than this!

38. One Direction - History

'History' serving as One Direction's "last hurrah" final single of course was going to be a huge hit, though at least it was denied of a top 5 position. It's probably one of the worst of their songs, although I can name quite a few I dislike even more. At least now they're on hiatus but expect Harry Styles in next year's hate chart when he releases something (thankfully we were spared from that this year). So what is so bad about 'History'? Firstly the production is really uninteresting, with it being an acoustic-guitar driven song. Which could work if the lyrics were well-written and there was a good singer I guess, but neither of those are the case here. Clearly you had to be a 1D fan to really 'get' the song, and as I've disliked them since they were on X Factor, this does nothing to turn around my opinion. The chorus is just so annoying and refused to leave my head on a few occasions.

37. Niall Horan - This Town

What we really didn't want or need this year was yet another Ed Sheeran wannabe, and coming from the weak voice of Niall Horan or more commonly known as Niall From 1D. Maybe he should adopt Fromwundee as his surname. The song is really boring and goes nowhere, and has what can barely be described as a chorus. At least when Ed Sheeran makes a boring ballad, like 'Thinking Out Loud', he actually sings it with emotion and there is a strong hook. None of this can be said about 'This Town', which makes it unsurprising really that it underperformed in places like the US, where it only reached #25. Unfortunately for us Brits it made our top 10, but I had expected it to do better than #9 and just a month in the top 20, so I guess I'm thankful for that. Needless to say I'm not looking forward to any of his future releases especially if this is the road he's decided to go down. At least Zayn and Louis broke away from the '1D sound'.

36. The Vamps feat. Omi - I Found A Girl

'All Night' was quite a decent tune even if it's not the best thing Matoma's done production wise, but this remains awful. For some reason OMI decided to jump on the song for the single release, he doesn't do anything to improve the song anyway which is a shame as 'Cheerleader' was one of my absolute favourites of 2015. Thankfully it only spent one week in the chart so I didn't have to hear it that often, I'm so glad the days where boyband fanbases could get any old crap into the top 10 are long gone.

On a personal note I'm really pleased and relieved that Drake's two big hits aren't a lot higher in this, I thought One Dance would be a top 10 contender so good to see people not hating on that cheer.gif

Although we DO have three Drake entries in the top 20.

35. DNCE- Cake By The Ocean

We start off the section with DNCE, or as recently departed poster Ethan called them; DUNCE manson.gif puke.gif

For the first few listens of this, I didn't think it was that bad. Not something I was ever going to really get into, but not awful either. Soon though I had made up my mind about it and I was really disliking the song. It's just really annoying and the lyrics are awful. Additionally the overexposure this had this year killed it even further. It's about as needlessly catchy as the flu and definitely something I never want to hear again ever. Especially his falsetto voice and the shouty bit, which is the entire chorus basically.

34. The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey- Closer

And my one & only commentary in this section goes to one of the worst & most bland songs to infect our charts this year. The utterly horrendous 'Closer', the one where the guy in Chainsmokers decides to go for the singing which he should have really left all to Halsey. The Chainsmokers were an interesting act. They'd gone from the utterly abominable #Selfie, to the quite good Roses, to song of the year contender 'Don't Let Me Down' so I was really hyped when I saw they were collaborating with Halsey- an act I fell in love with this year & had already scored 3 big top 10 hits in my personal chart in 2016! And then I heard the song. I didn't mind it too much as I was sure it would be a grower. But then the weeks went and went & I still wasn't liking it at all, before that pretty quickly turned into hate- especially considering how bloody massive this became, it really should've been DLMD having that success sad.gif The song is so bland, it sums up perfectly the state of most of the dreadful #1's of the year & the VMA's performance of this is one of the most utterly horrifyingly worst vocal performances I have ever witnessed watching live. This should really be a lot higher than this.

33. Beyonce- Hold Up

Beyoncé gave us a surprise album this year with 'Lemonade' which quickly began to dominate both the albums and singles chart. And for whatever reason this was the song that took off the most from it, though without Spotify it could only do so much in the chart. It's not exactly bad but it's definitely not going to be remembered as a signature song of Beyoncé's. Even in the UK it felt like 'Sorry' and 'Formation' had larger cultural impact, but neither performed as well in the charts ('Formation' could have if Beyoncé actually made it available for iTunes download prior to the 'Lemonade' release though).

Now I actually like this song although not quite as much as Ultra. It of course was going to receive a lot of criticism here though, mostly for the lazy (even by pop music standards) chorus which consists mostly of the word 'work' as well as the beat and this year's breaking rent-a-rapper Ty Dolla $ign. Whose name should really be pronounced Ty Dolla Dolla Sign Ign just to emphasise the redundancy of the dollar sign in his name.

31. Meghan Trainor- No

When Meghan Trainor announced she was releasing 'NO' as the first single from 'Thank You', Jay amusingly used the cover artworks of the single and album to put into one picture how most of us felt about Meghan's continued presence. At least we were spared from 'Me Too' being a hit here (more on that later) but 'NO' was a reasonable smash (and to be fair it's not half as bad, but not something I want to revisit). It does interestingly borrow a lot from the styles of early 00s pop in its production, something we don't often get, but the song did get annoying quickly.

Both songs that I am commenting on in this section have something in common. I thought both were going to be surefire crossover hits & hang around for a while. Thank fuck that didn't occur with either this or New Girl which I'll be coming to later. This is just one of those songs I don't think I was ever going to like and it is just a poor, forgettable, crap song. Though being a bit positive in this chart for once, definitely not the worst song Silento has done though! I don't think much can beat Watch Me for the overall title of worst song of the decade. So this doesn't come close to that horror but this is still dreadful.

Usually the chart flops get away with it and don't end up in the hate chart however a significant number of you really didn't like 'No Broken Hearts', which became yet another failed attempt for Bebe Rexha to become popular as a solo artist. It's not difficult to see why it flopped, when it's quite a boring song and Bebe puts on an annoying accent in the chorus (I haven't heard the song enough to remember anything else, but I'm probably not missing out on much). She really needs a killer song to have hits outside of featuring on rap and dance hits, her problem is she doesn't have that (yet?).

Well here is DUNCE again. manson.gif Firstly, what a disappointing band name. For a group named DNCE, none of their songs actually make me want to dance. They also sound like they're trying to be Maroon 5 in this song, which they are not. Also, we really don't need another Maroon 5. 'Toothbrush' may not have been as overexposed and annoying as their other hit, and it's a stretch to even call this a hit as it missed the UK top 40 (thankfully), but it's still terrible. Jonas' voice sounds so whiny in the chorus, and the lyrics are awful and cringey. The production values are basically non-existant as it's generic as fuck. Basically, nothing saves this song. I'm glad they seem to have pissed off now with their floptastic third single (which barely made the Top 100) and album. This is a great example of how NOT to follow up your debut massive hit.

This was as bad I was expecting, not fun & just irritating. They annoyed me on the X-Factor live shows (thank gosh Louisa won *.*) and this debut single was just a noise & not fun at all. This flopped a lot more than I was expecting and we finally got a follow-up single that nobody wanted this month, which supposedly samples Peter Andre's Mysterious Girl, one of the few songs worse than most of the horrors appearing in this hatechart. Thankfully I've avoided that single but unfortunately I heard this and it was crap and is fully deserving of its placing here!

Justin Timberlake can do some really great songs and push the boundaries of pop music (such as getting an eight-minute long single to #1!), but then there's this which may well be one of his weakest singles to date yet it became his biggest. It feels very forced the amount of times he tells you to dance and feel good, not to mention the amount of overplay this received which it really suffered from. At least this is just for a film and isn't the single off his next album. Annoyingly it's back in the top 40 now too, can't it just go away? drama.gif

No Broken HEarts isn't THAT bad, it does feel like a Rita Ora album track though so doesn't really fit Bebe. That's her problem, she's had that, I Got You and I Can't Stop Drinking About You/I'm Gonna Show You Crazy, the latter two were a good sound but with the former two she's just seeing what will stick by trying everything laugh.gif

'Stitches' was seriously overexposed, and if it couldn't get any worse, we had to put up with the song all over again with 'Treat You Better'. The similarities between the two stand out so much that I can't decide which song is objectively more awful, although I'd say this if I had to choose. They're both in the same key, both have the same acoustic guitar and drumbeat, and the subject matter of the lyrics is also very similar (if anything, the lyrics on 'Treat You Better' are even worse, but the production is slightly better). It makes me wonder will we actually have a Shawn Mendes hit song where he's happy??? I'm sure there's one somewhere but it hasn't been released as a single yet. Although I'd rather if we just stop letting him have hits, that would be brilliant. BADDER DAN ECAN.

And more awfulness here in one of the worst dance songs of the year, this should have finished way higher than this. I like the original version but this is easily one of the worst examples of an older song being remixed. It is just offensively bad & so dreadfully done. The vocals are also crap and the beat is horrific. Shame this couldn't stall at #11 for 4 weeks, a song that would have actually been deserving of having that peak instead of the classics which have stalled at #11. Though tbh #11 is still far too high for this. Maybe #11111.... Or just non-existent. Horrendous.

This started to peak in the chart about this time last year, and eventually hit UK #1 to my disappointment. His voice for one is annoying to listen to, although the SeeB remix makes it somewhat bearable. Combined with dull production and with it being an acoustic guitar driven song, all that can sell the original song is his voice and lyrics - and neither are impressive. It's aimed too much at the pre-teen market for me to get into, I know some people here really enjoy it but to me it just feels like another generic cliche heartbreak song. Also the way he sings in the chorus, it is so annoying and painful to listen to - someone tell him to stop trying to hit the high notes.

Easily the worst thing Calvin has done for a long, long time. His vocals are utterly horrific on this (well at least he doesn't get the award for having the worst vocal on his own dance track, that can go to The Chainsmokers guy who is constantly now shoe-horning himself into their songs) & the song is incredibly dull and boring. The repetitive & not good lyric makes this even worse & it is just awfully generic. A big miss from Calvin & unfortunately this was a big-ish top 5 hit but has thankfully fell quite quickly after its top 20 run!

No, however, is very good.

Towards the later section, Dessert and No Broken Hearts are garbage, but I kinda enjoy Can't Stop The Feeling. I don't love it, but it doesn't bother me. I've not heard either Toothbrush or New Girl.

The 25-21 section is largely uninteresting, although Treat You Better I actually really like.

Poor Calvin sad.gif I really love 'My Way' so it was a shame to see it get such a negative reception on BuzzJack.

Both Shawn songs are excellent and I won't hear otherwise. I really don't think they're THAT similar either, it's just his musical style magic.gif

I've given Sex loads of chances but I just can't get into it. I normally love Trevor Dahl's vocals (heck he's in my avatar right now lmao) but they are oddly distorted in this one and the production is quite boring really.

My Way is AWFUL, pure awful. Basic production, even more basic lyrics, and I've never thought Calvin could sing particularly well.

Well this is Jason up there with his utter worst, joining the likes of Trumpets, Wiggle- a former hatechart winner!, and Don't Wanna Go Home as his 0/10 tracks. The lyrics to this is awful and the whole vocals/production is dreadful. Especially the productions, that post chorus bloody racketing noise is one of the worst moments in a song this year. Well deserving of a top 20 placing here!

I wonder if the Suicide Squad soundtrack producers have ever heard the expression 'too many cooks spoil the broth'? Probably not, because despite there being six artists on this song it just isn't that great. The verses are alright at best (although as often is the case, Wayne's verse is quite pointless) and the chorus gets annoying after a few listens. Quite a few passionately hated this however, especially mdh who's probably typing his rant post about this not being higher in the hate chart already. I never hated this but it didn't make my playlist either.

If I was Meghan Trainor, I'd want to be me too. No but seriously, who in the world thought this was a good idea of a song? Let's start with the production, which is laughably awful. And this is from the producer (Ricky Reed) that made Jason Derulo's 'Talk Dirty' and 'Wiggle' both of which I liked, so what happened to him? Researching him, it seems he also produced 5SOS 'Girls Talk Boys', so that's two terrible songs he's done this year. It really is such a poor attempt at revitalising the electro-pop sound and sounds like something that should be coming from a Pixie Lott budget comeback, rather than a huge worldwide popstar. FORTUNATELY the UK saw sense with this one and it got no higher than #84 in the charts, but it was a US Billboard top 20 hit. Anyway, onto the vocal and lyrics, which are even worse than the production. It doesn't sound like the self-empowerment anthem it's trying to sell itself as, but more of a "I'm so wonderful look at me" anthem. Some people can pull that off, Kanye has based his whole career on selling his own greatness and he's brilliant, but it just doesn't work coming from Meghan - especially when the delivery of the lyrics are extremely annoying. Definitely one of my least favourite songs of the year.

And the song which started the horrific Mannequin Challenge also unsurprisingly is one of the worst songs of the year. This was just a massive bunch of noise to my ears from listen 1 and I don't understand the appeal of the song at all. This unfortunately got as high as #2 in the charts but thank gosh it was blocked from the top spot by the FAR FAR superior Rockabye <3 Easily one of the worst songs of the last few years & glad I have managed to avoid it more than I expected to!

I love My Way, and I like Sucker For Pain and The Mack (even though I prefer the 1996 original).
Speaking of Return Of The Mack, I remember watching Charity Shop Hunt videos by a YouTuber called CD Singles Collector last year (whose main attempt is to collect every UK Top 75 single from the 90's on CD single), and in one of the videos, he panned the ROTM song and didn't like the fact that it stopped his favourite Manic Street Preachers song "A Design For Life" from reaching number one.
I thought Me Too and Stitches were okay.
Black Beatles is somewhere between 5.5 and 6.0 for me. Speaking of which, Nicki Minaj did a version of this song called "Black Barbies", and instead of "That girl is a real crowd pleaser", it's "That girl is a real p***y pleaser". Haven't heard the full song, but I discovered it in a Billboard Hot 100 video.
Get Ugly and Treat You Better: both meh for me.

Somehow this is as high as #5 even though it didn't chart, but I guess for a song as polarising as this it didn't take overplay for people to hate it as quite a few were declaring it as one of the worst of the year within the first day of release. The faux-reggae feel of the track, the lyrics and John's forced accent were reasons cited for it getting hate. I personally didn't mind it but I wasn't a huge fan either.

Drake was a massive hate figure all year for his constant domination of the chart, but in the end it wasn't his huge #1 that got the hate attention here but his most recent release 'Fake Love', the first from his forthcoming album apparently. Like with most commercial Drake songs I enjoyed this but understandably many people found the forced accent annoying, as well as the production being more urban leaning than 'One Dance' or 'Too Good'.

The lyrics are poor and repetitive, the production sounds cheap (and in fact it's completely ripped off some other song) and both of them sound very annoying. I don't usually mind the viral internet rap hits but this one can really do one, let's hope we don't go that low again (2017's already an improvement in the meme-fueled hits anyway, g'won 'Bad and Boujee')
