The last few months have seen a number of stories about the Union Jack becoming more prominent in day to day life. Politicians would pose with it in every picture which lead to a couple of BBC Breakfast hosts lightly mocking one cabinet minister for the size of his flag. Immediately that led to apologies issued and admonitions given to said presenters. Social media was divided as it always is but one of the comments from a Conservative MP (Lia Nici from Grimsby) was fairly chilling and crossed a line IMO. Of course if people are not proud to be British, or of our flag or Queen, they don’t have to live in the UK. Perhaps they should move to another country they prefer Basically "If you don't love it leave". Now today there has been an announcement that Union Jacks have to be flown from central Government buildings 365 days a year and local government buildings are strongly recommended to as well. Where does this stop and does it bother you? It does me - since Brexit I've noticed that twitter have been filled with accounts prominently displaying the Union Jack or English flag in their handle. These accounts tend to be extremely right wing, unpleasant and xenophobic. I don't see the obsession with a logo on a piece of material. To me it's literally no different to a poster of the latest Taylor Swift album being on everything. It's to me a ridiculous thing for grown adults to have any investment whatsoever in.

The grief Naga Munchetty got for laughing at a joke the white man next to her said last week was awful. Huw Edwards having to delete his Welsh flag tweet that was a joke was ridiculous. This government insisting on constantly flying these flags is nauseating.

It shouldn't have negative connotations but it does. I'm proud to be British and I do quite like the Union Jack flag (I much prefer it to the England flag). I do think as part of our culture we need to "win" the idenity back from how it is associated and viewed currently. But on a different matter it doesn't bother me if Government buildings fly the flag or if local councils are encouraged to. Makes no difference to me, but I would have thought there are more pressing matters for the Government to try and enforce!

Queen of Soon Joined: 24 May 2007 Posts: 74,082 User: 3,474	The UK Gov appear to have decided that the solution to separatism is to force more Union Flags on the parts of the country that can’t stand the f***ing sight of the thing Flags on everything to remind the Scottish and Welsh and Northern where the money came from (The EU used to do this and it never stopped Wales and the North voting for Brexit despite the fact that ERDF cared more about both regions than the UK Gov ever has done or will do) and to counteract a rise in the use of “unacceptable” flags on projects that are lead by devolved administrations with the tax funds from their citizens that the UK gov sees as it’s money that it generously donates to the devolved administrations. Long may the Saltire and the Dragon fly free. I fully support any citizen who wants to hark back to the good old days and start shooting flaming arrows at these rags hanging off UK Gov buildings squatting in the Sovereign territory of Scotland and Wales. Yeah this plan is just entrenching separatist views. The more Union flags they force on Scotland needlessly in some desperate anti-Indy ploy the more and more I become a proponent of a hard intra-UK border after Scotlands Freedom. That’ll give them plenty of infrastructure to whack their cunty wee flag on.

Sadly, just reflecting the growing nationalism post Brexit and trying to desperately to prolong the union staying together, the latter won't last long that's for sure!

Considering he doesn't pay his own money for flat repairs at a time of great recession I would think not. In fact doubt he's paid for anything in his life. Socialism from the very poor to the ultra wealthy elite and their media backers. What was disappointing is how easily the country continues to fall for it.

This story tells you that the Tories are worried that the cracks in the Union (>50% support for Scottish Independence, growing support for Irish reunification) are going to become huge ruptures in the coming years. They are right to be worried.

It’s things like this which are so devisive in NI that the country nearly came to a standstill when they voted to remove the Union Jack from the city hall in Belfast. An incoming PM gets £30,000 to refurbish the flat. If they want to spend any more, they have to pay for it themselves.

It’s like claiming I work in the council housing department and I should pay to repair it, I clean and maintain and tidy my own desk and iamspamspamamiand but of course that’s different. He also pays for their own food and drinks unless they're for an official Government meeting such as a Cabinet meeting or dinner for a foreign leader. Same in the US, the President receives a private food and drinks bill every month. Only State functions are paid for out of tax-payers money.

No. All this is just another reason to have a go at our elected pm with an 80 seat majority.
