Will need to listen to the Shawn Mendes track. Don't think it will start well but it could do well in the long run if it's as good as 'Stitches'.

Can anyone find out if this Bastille's release is only a rumour or the truth? unsure.gif

Alan walker's follow up is out now too. Interested to see how that does but yeah team Shawn judging from the clip it's sounding pretty good!

For Dan who was asking about download sales for the Top 10. This was Tuesday download sales only (approx.) with streaming only sales in red

01 Justin Timberlake “Can’t Stop The Feeling” 4.7K 4.3K
02 Clean Bandit ft. Louisa Johnson 3.5K 2.4K
03 Calvin Harris/Rihanna “This Is What You Came For” 3.1K 5.6K
04 Kungs & Cookin' On 3 Burners “This Girl” 2.9K 2.1K
05 Drake “One Dance” 2.7K 8.1K
06 gnash ft. olivia o’brien “i hate you, i love you” 2.5K 3.1K
07 Galantis “No Money” 2K 4K
08 P!nk “Just Like Fire” 2K 1.3K
09 Cheat Codes x Kris Kross Amsterdam “Sex” 1.9K 2.6K
10 Beyoncé “Hold Up” 1.8K 0.1K

As you can see, the 8.1K streaming for Drake's “Once Dance” means that a lead that knocks Drake down to roughly 0.25 is required merely to keep pace with zero streaming, and with a moderate amount (say 4K/day for the Top 4 on the streaming chart as per Timberlake) down to roughly 0.4 to equate.

Posted by: Doctor Blind 2nd June 2016, 11:23 PM

Drake is on 0.5751 the lead at #1 at the moment for ref.

It is indeed. She was teasing it ages ago and everyone assumed it was from Anti. Glad we finally know what it is!

I'm finding the new Shawn Mendes a bit bland on first listen. That new Alan Walker one is pretty good though, even if it pretty much follows the same formula as 'Faded'. Disappointing at lack of new Bastille sad.gif

I just hope Shawn Mendes doesn't get the #1 track, I don't think its that good as Stitches. Its pretty wide open for next week, any of the top 5 on iTunes could get it, Clean Bandit could be with a chance even Kungs, Calvin Harris, JT, gnash, Drake for a 9th week if a video drops, that's what I call a battle for #1 laugh.gif

Ohhhh so is "Mike Will Made It" the phrase often dropped at the beginning of songs that, presumably, he/they/it produced?

yeh, Mike Will Made-It is one of the big urban producers who love giving themselves a namedrop in their productions (see also: DJ Mustard)

and also yes, he is actually called Mike Will Made-It instead of just Mike Will. laugh.gif

Also Drake and Shawn Mendes seem to be dominating the singles chart this year so far, Beyonce has chucked a few album tracks in, but they seem to have dropped off the radar, mind you that was more like an album boost, as Doctor Blind hinted there are lack of new releases, something big will probably drop. The next #1 has to be someone from that top 5, (Calvin, JT, Clean Bandit, Kungs and gnash). I know One Dance seems to have dropped a fair bit now, but its streams are still strong, and sales are getting lower, really difficult to call it, maybe JT will edge it next week somehow.

I must return back to EDM discussion for a minute but its relevant, don't worry, it's just to ask is that new Alan Walker song trance? A lot of people on this forum said his last song sounded like trance, and this sounds more trancey to my ears considerably. I must ask the expert DanG....

QUOTE(Hazza Chapman @ May 31 2016, 12:37 AM) *
And yet those people who complain about Drake being #1 for ages still tune in to the chart religiously.....

To me the song is quite decent but it's ongoing run at #1 despite not being the best selling song anymore symbolizes how things are chartwise now so you just have to put up with it if the chart is still a big deal to you.

If you don't like how things are then don't tune in weekly to the chart. I used to be like a lot of you, getting excited every week for the charts but then things became stale and stagnant and I pretty much gave up. The last time I listened to the chart show was the week before Christmas last year.

Drake will be number one for more than ten weeks whether anyone likes it or not because that's how the state of the Official Chart is right now. The Official Chart will never be as good as it was 4 or more years ago ever again I think.

Posted by: Dobbo 4th June 2016, 05:26 PM

The beginning of the Shawn Mendes track sounds like Be The One fused with Don't Let Me Down. It's alright though, a lot better than Stitches but not as goodas the Summer one.

Maybe this Shawn Mendes song will be more tolerable than I thought, still haven't heard it.

Out of interest, what would tracks lingering in the 300s, or even the thousands, be selling?

Posted by: danG 6th June 2016, 07:58 PM

there was an experiment done on buzzjack not long ago where we got Lisa Scott Lee's 'Electric' to #1006 (and I think about 20-30 of us bought it) so I guess that gives some idea.

can't imagine a song in the 300s is selling much more than 100 copies per day.

Posted by: Steve201 6th June 2016, 08:02 PM

Drakes only on 23k in the first mids with Kungs down at 16k so drake is Def falling in overall sales so if Kungs goes top 3 in streams he should get to no1, hopefully next week!

On Digital Sales Data when you double a chart position outside the very upper reaches then the sales are less than half so for example as the number 100 record typically sells 250 copies then 120 would be enough to penetrate the top 200. For the 300s as Hassann asks then I imagine anywhere from 60-75 copies would do it and to enter the top 1500 you would only need 15 copies at the most!

I also like the idea of the experiment, something that needs to be tried again at some point.

Here's the link for the thread for the Electric campaign if you've not read it.

Yes having grown up listening to the warmth of dance music around 2005 when a lot of dance tracks had uplifting strings and disco vocals in them and the songs were lively throughout and you didnt have to listen to long acoustic verses before you got to the actual danceable bit in the chorus, it really sounds quite depressing.

Which is why that Clean Bandit and Louisa track is a breath of fresh air.

It reminded me of 2003 in terms of how busy the music scene was at the time - there were a lot of major artists releasing in both years. Also, it felt like 2013 was the peak of digital downloads with the monster run of Get Lucky - La La La - Blurred Lines... I miss that year. sad.gif

As you miss 2013 this video should make you happy! Some of these songs are still in the upper echelons of the iTunes chart to this day!

Miley had two number 1's that year didn't she? these days she justs smokes weed and makes a pratt of herself laugh.gif

The Official chart was still fun to follow then, when streaming wasn't involved and the chart was more competitive with lots of major new releases every week unlike the poo that we have now.

I'm definitely on the anti-"slow tropical house" train. Waves especially irritates me and I just find the entire genre bland. I really miss the House renaissance of 2013 to be honest - Disclosure, Duke Dumont, Le Youth etc. That was a stellar year for chart music. heart.gif

Yes but I still think 2005 was one of the best years for dance music, there was none of the slow stuff (apart from DJ Sammy's Why, which wasn't too bad), it was all mostly lively disco influenced stuff and dull electro hadn't taken over smile.gif

2007 was one of the worst years for dance music for me, funky house died as a chart force and tech house/electro with no warmth started up like Put Your Hands Up For Detroit and The Creeps which kickstarted stuff like Rhymes, Jack, Chunky and Rinse And Repeat this decade.

2013 was OK but there was Chris Malinchak's So Good To Me, which was part of this genre sad.gif And Disclosure' and Sam Smith's latch was also slow. I didn't like Le Youth's Cool but Dance With Me was good. My favourite one from that year was Breach's Everything You Never Had (We had it All).

I never liked Disclosure or Duke Dumont much, it just seemed a step down from the glorious dubstep/drum and bass boom of 2011 and 2012 to be into much more chilled, less energetic stuff like Latch or Need U (100%). Anyway Duke Dumont was responsible for tropical house with I Got U.

2015 revitalised the looped house of the mid 2000s (Philip George, Joe Stone) but it lacked the warmth and humour of the mid 2000s looped house, with just a cold distant sounding organ bassline and a beat.

Disclosure were also responsible for the similar sounding future bass we have now, like Chainsmokers - Roses, DJ Snake - Middle and Cheat Codes/ Kris Kross Amsterdam - Sex.

You know in the 'NOW' TV adverts they always say "An incredible TWELVE number ones!" or "Featuring an unbelievable NINE number ones!!"

What is it going to be for the next one? "Featuring ONE number one that wouldn't f***ing go away for 3 months!"

I expect the series will be scaled back to just two editions per year like in the mid-1980s and early 1990s.

He appeared on an MOS compilation Rapper's Delight so there's still hope. I just hope it doesn't end up like NOW 16 with no #1s. Speaking of artists who don't allow their music onto compilations, Beyoncé doesn't allow her music onto compilations but she's been appearing on them lately

Fantastic song, it was well ahead of its time....and so has aged very well smile.gif

We haven't had many rock hits this decade, this year's three official top 40 rock hits so far (Stone Roses, Disturbed, Viola Beach) has actually been the most for a while. Even in the iTunes top 40 we haven't had that many.

Indie and rock has been replaced with acoustic this decade (Ed Sheeran, James Bay, Hozier etc). Even acoustic is dying out now as a chart force. The only two indie bands that have done well with more than one song recently on the iTunes chart are The 1975 and Coldplay. Even the fantastic Walking On Cars song didn't do well, although thats because Radio 1 didn't playlist it for some reason.

Yes the Calvin one isnt great You ooh ooh repeated several times is really annoying. I think that the Kungs track is worse imo though because like most tropical house it is too chilled for my tastes. The Galantis one has no redeeming features either, childish vocals, sounds like a poor version of Charli XCXs Break The Rules (which I loved) and also it is tropical house too and I have heard too much of that.

The Clean Bandit track is fantastic though, and the MK and Becky Hill one is quite good imo.
