The Official Top 40 most-streamed Christmas songs
04 December 2020 | By Rob Copsey

Christmas songs are like Brussels sprouts: they only appear in December and you either love or loathe them - but either way they are an essential component of the festive season.

Like distant relatives bounding into your family home on Christmas morning, every December sees a flurry of festive favourites flood back into the Official Chart - ever since the age of downloading (2005) and streaming (2014) made the classics (as well as the newer Christmas songs) more accessible.

This year, Christmas songs have re-appeared in the chart earlier than usual, perhaps a sign we’re all keen to celebrate the festivities as early as possible in an otherwise difficult year.

Looking at the UK’s most-streamed Christmas songs (based on Official Charts Company data), the Top 3 is the holy trinity of classics: Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You lands at the top of the tree with 180 million streams to date, followed by Wham’s Last Christmas (158m) and Fairytale Of New York by The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl (125m). All three are usually the first to return to the Official Chart each December, often competing for spots in the Christmas Chart Top 10.

Completing the Top 5 are two more old favourites, Shakin’ Stevens’ Merry Christmas Everyone in fourth (97m), and Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? at 5 (94m). The iconic charity single released in 1984 is one of the UK’s best-selling singles of all time, with over 3.8m pure sales, and continues to hold up well in the streaming era.

The highest-placed modern Christmas song - that is, festive songs released since 2010 - goes to Ariana Grande; her 2014 original song Santa Tell Me is the UK’s eighth most-streamed Christmas track with 78 million plays.

Other modern festive songs holding their own against the classics include Leona Lewis’ One More Sleep in 15th place (65m), Justin Bieber’s Mistletoe in 16th (58m), and Kelly Clarkson’s Underneath The Tree in 19th (52m).

If Mariah is the Queen of Christmas, then surely Michael Buble is the King. His Christmas album is the UK’s biggest festive-themed record with just over 3 million chart sales, and four of its tracks rank among the Top 40 most-streamed Christmas songs, led by It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas in sixth (92m).

The number 1's a shocker tongue.gif

I would have liked to see 2000 Miles a little higher but I know it never does massively well. Great to see Sia sneak in though wub.gif

No prizes for guessing the top 3 but I'd have guessed Pogues in front of Wham.

I'm actually pretty surprised The Pogues are in the top 3 here, they've usually been in the top 3 on downloads of course but they're normally more around the 8th-10th most popular on Spotify most of the time due to having much more limited playlist support than most of the other big Christmas classics. (Though they do a bit better on the other platforms I guess).

Surprised at how well "One More Sleep" has done streaming-wise. It usually lags behind on spotify as the big playlists tend to be more american skewed. I wonder if it could climb into the top 10 at some point in the future.

One More Sleep and a lot of british classics end up evening out by doing a lot better on Apple/Amazon and the likes and hence they are up there in the top 20 with the Arianas of this world.

I wish Sia’s ‘Snowman’ was included, instead of ‘Santa’s coming for us’. I don’t hate it, but it does grate after a bit. ‘Snowman’ is a grower!🥰🥰

Also it’s so frustrating how the following are not included:

Hurts - All I want for Christmas is New Year’s Day. ( A perfect song for anytime of the year.)

George Michael - Sweet December song.😍😍 ( Just a stunning song, with a heartwarming video. This really is criminally underrated, it finally clicked with me a few years ago. It’s also much MUCH better than ‘Last Christmas’. (Sorry.)😎

Low - Just like Christmas ( Now THIS should be Xmas No.1 this year.)

Mavis Staples - Christmas Vacation.🥰 ( I never hear this classic on the radio, it’s included on ‘National lampoon Xmas vacation.’

And finally just for fun...
Pet Shop boys - it doesn’t often snow at Christmas.🥳🥳

Some excellent shout outs there especially for ‘December Song’ absolutely brilliant from George Michael and so late in his career, always remember the XF final performance which thankfully propelled it to the top 20 in 2010 when the snow was falling outside in that cold winter.

Also only just found out the ‘Christmas Vacation’ song in National Lampoons is by Mavis Staples, love hearing it each year when I watch it.

She has really nailed the "Christmas Eve" specific market, though. It's the perfect song for the day before Christmas, I imagine it gets a ton of streams on the 24th each year!

The return of old Christmas tracks to the charts is an older phenomenon than many people realise.

In 1981 the Christmas chart set a new record, with 13 seasonal singles listed. Four of these were re-entries / re-releases, and the A-side of three of them, plus the B-side of the fourth, appear on this OCC streaming list. 1981 also saw the first appearance of a cult Christmas classic which won't be far outside the OCC Top 40.

The Music Chronicle 1981 provides a rundown of the 13 Christmas hits, alongside a multitude of other entertaining and informative lists, articles and snippets of trivia about the British music scene in that fascinating year.

I assume you mean The Waitresses ‘Christmas Wrapping’ was the song just outside the top 40? What were the other re releases? Slade and and Wizzard?
