Chart Commentary

Climbing back up two spots to #1, Rita Ora's tenth #1 single Only Want You scores a second week at the top, its first week since November. The song originally debuted at #1 when parent album Phoenix came out and rumours of Only Want You being its fifth single were around. Last week, the song re-entered at #3 with its single mix featuring 6LACK. Originally, 6LACK had scored a free #1 as the album version and single mix are combined, but now that #1 is notably less flukey! Of course, the boost is mainly as a result of the music video's release. This makes Only Want You the first song to hit #1 on two separate top 40 runs. Rita's also this week's one to watch, with Sofía Reyes and Anitta on the annoyingly titled R.I.P. - can she dethrone herself next week?

Surprisingly leaping a huge 21 places this week, Freya Ridings scores her second top 10 hit and her highest peak to date with new single You Mean the World to Me. This means it outdoes Lost Without You, her breakthrough hit from last year, which "only" peaked at #5 despite an excellent EOY position of #42. That's owed to the track being more of a slow burner, while You Mean the World to Me is much more instant. Interestingly this means it climbs above all of last week's new releases that initially trounced it (except the Only Want You single mix).

Freya Ridings
2018 05 Lost Without You | 1 | 25-20-16-5-9-10-11-14-20-28-37-x (11 weeks)
2018 19 Waking Up (MJ Cole & Freya Ridings) | FEAT | 19-29-x (2 weeks)
2019 02 You Mean the World to Me | 2 | 23-2-... (2+ weeks)

This week's highest new entry comes courtesy of Ava Max, who scores her second hit with So Am I. It follows up the global smash hit Sweet But Psycho, which peaked at #2 for me back in November (interestingly in the same week that Only Want You first made #1). Both songs are set to feature on Ava's debut album The Exhibitionist, due out this year.

Ava Max
2018 02 Sweet But Psycho | 1 | 19-26-40-x-2-4-7-16-19-16-17-20-25-38-x (13 non-consecutive weeks)
2019 07 So Am I | 2 | 7-... (1+ weeks)

Also new into this week's top 10 is Louis Tomlinson with his first single in over a year. Two of Us is a heartbreaking dedication to his mother, Johannah Deakin, who died in 2016, and becomes his fourth top 10 as a soloist. It follows three #1 singles - Just Hold On, Back to You and Miss You, as well as the 11 achieved with One Direction, which technically make Louis the artist with the most #1 singles in my chart (The Vamps hold the actual record with 13). Two of Us has become especially poignant following recent news about the suspected heart attack of Louis' sister Félicité, who sadly died on Thursday. RIP. sad.gif

Louis Tomlinson
2016 01 Just Hold On (Louis Tomlinson & Steve Aoki) | 1 | 1-2-4-6-11-14-22-29-34-37-x (10 weeks)
2017 01 Back to You (feat. Bebe Rexha & Digital Farm Animals) | 2 | 8-1-1-1-3-7-10-14-22-26-29-36-x (12 weeks)
2017 29 Just Like You | PS | 29-x (1 week)
2017 01 Miss You | 3 | 1-4-10-14-19-25-35-x (7 weeks)
2019 08 Two of Us | 4 | 8-... (1+ weeks)

Soaring eight places into this week's top 5, the Jonas Brothers score their very first top 10 hit. Aside from the two singles released in their brief comeback in 2012/13, all of their old singles were released long before my chart began in late 2011. Even then, I must admit, I never paid a great deal of attention to them, so Sucker is undoubtedly the most I've enjoyed a Jonas Brothers single to date! It matches the peak of Joe's other band, DNCE, and their only substantial hit Cake By the Ocean. As a soloist, Nick managed three hits to his name, none of which made it higher than #37.

John Lundvik also reaches a new peak this week, while Idris Elba (!), CHVRCHES, Conan Grey and Camouflage Rose make their chart debuts, as does Levi Jones (of The Tide and O.D.L.) as a soloist.
