The owls are not what they seem Pronouns: He/him Joined: 11 July 2009 Posts: 37,133 User: 9,232	So after the first one was generally really impressive albeit clearly the simpler part of the story to adapt, I was interested to see whether he could live up to the second half and...honestly I think he did, this was pretty darn amazing in almost every scope. For a film that's almost three hours, it really doesn't feel that and if anything, I wanted it to be longer. I think they really portrayed the political and religious complexities of the book well, even if the supposed good guys win, he still betrayed himself and gave in to the messianic beliefs as they were too strong to contain which shows there is consequences. For a novel in the 1950s, it's incredible how timely and relevant the themes still remain to be, and to do all this when the film looks as utterly stunning and cinematic as it is is a triumph. Like the first one, it's an incredible cinematic experience, the Harkonnen arena, sand worms and shots of the desert gave me goosebumps. I knew not all of the book would make it in, but I am sad to see the Mentat plot entirely cut as that was one of the features of the book that I enjoyed, and I would've liked to see more of the political string pulling beyond the Emperor, but given we're seemingly getting Dune: Messiah (yay!), I'm hoping they can expand on the roles a bit more, particularly Florence Pugh's character as it felt quite underused likewise, Anya Taylor Joy randomly popping up for a milisecond! It's wonderful that we've finally got a definitive cinematic version of the story after all these years, it feels like it could potentially be the modern day equivalent of the original Star Wars trilogy, I hope to read the next book before the movie comes out, been so long since I've read the original I need a refresher!

The owls are not what they seem Pronouns: He/him Joined: 11 July 2009 Posts: 37,133 User: 9,232	Yes somewhat, although admittedly, fairly rushed as a lot of it was setting up for the sequel, it clearly affects the people he was closest with - his mother and Chani (who had a bit of an expanded role here and her part felt fairly ambiguous going forward, don't know how much she features originally going forward, but I'm guessing she may continue to have an expanded role). (Spoiled just in case people haven't seen or read it x)

If they do make Dune Messiah it could be the bleakest sci-fi blockbuster ever. They'd have to green light both that and Children of Dune surely?

Mansonette Joined: 3 November 2009 Posts: 6,935 User: 9,872	Just got back from watching this and am relieved and more than happy to add my voice to the chorus proclaing this among Sci-Fi's greatest ever and rare example of a superior sequel. Some interesting narrative choices (the disappearance of Thufir, the lack of Paul and Chani's son, Alia not killing the Baron, and a pretty extensive re-write of Feyd's story) although all the changes mostly work, mainly as they simplify the overall story. Still feel Feyd gets a little short changed here though. The ending is wonderfully dark too, more so if you pick up on where it goes next. Everything about it is brilliantly executed - acting, direction, script, score, cinematography, production design, the lot. We really need to let Denis film the next two novels too, not just Messiah.
