QUOTE
The next few months are make or break for Lady Gaga.

Poised for the release of her fifth studio album, the singer knows she has a lot to prove following, what can only be described as, a rocky few years.

Once the biggest popstar in the world with more number ones and awards than you could shake a disco stick at, the wheels fell off after the release of her last album Artpop in 2013, when it received a mixed critical reception and racked up less than impressive record sales, especially compared to previous efforts The Fame, The Fame Monster and Born This Way.

The campaign spiralled into chaos, with news of team reshuffles, missing videos and poor ticket sales leaving even the most ardent of fans left wondering if she'd lost her magic touch.

But as the queen of reinvention (sorry Madge), it's possible she can turn things around for her next release - but only if she follows these must-dos.

1. All killer, no filler

Remember when a Lady Gaga album was just hit after hit after hit? It was a much simpler time, right? At a mammoth 15 tracks, Artpop came with more filler than Katie Price's face, with the stand-out tracks rather thin on the ground. What LG5 needs is for Gaga to be more fearless in her track selection again, and not be afraid to put out a 10 track album. We want quality, NOT quantity.

2. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel

Pop music should always try to push boundaries, but as Gaga's career has gone on, she's become obsessed with ripping up the rule book, and music has become the biggest casualty. You only need to look at Artpop album tracks Aura and Swine if you don't know what I'm talking about. Just stick to the trusted verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-fade formula please.

3. And on that note, embrace the mainstream

Gaga relished in telling fans that Artpop was an experimental body of work, but she soon learned that experimental doesn't always translate to mass audiences. Venus was a prime example of this on her last album, and while the chorus had moments of pure pop brilliance, the outlandish lyrics and futuristic production on the rest of the track alienated the average chart listener. If Gaga wants to release experimental music, leave it for the B-sides or collate them on a special EP - that way everyone's a winner.

4. Deliver on the promises you make

Gaga promised so much ahead of Artpop's release - an all-singing-all-dancing app, a third video to complete the Paparazzi and Telephone trilogy, and even a second part to the album. The first turned out to be a complete flop, and the other two never materalised. The moral of the story here? Either don't make promises you can't keep, or blinking well deliver on them if you want to keep your fans on side.

5. A consistent album campaign - and more specifically, look

I don't need to tell you that Gaga is no stranger to switching up her look. However, her image and visuals for her last campaign were confused, inconsistent and, if we're being honest, looked as if they were made by a six-year-old in an arts and crafts lesson. Then she mixed up the message even more by claiming wanting to show everyone the 'real' her. A return to the slicker, high-gloss looks reminiscent of The Fame/Monster era would be much welcomed.

6. The return of unforgettable videos

Poker Face, Bad Romance, Telephone - Gaga has form when it comes to creating iconic pop videos that feel like real music 'moments' when they are released. But there's been a few dud ones along the way too, and that's not even mentioning the fact that the Do What U What video is still to see the light of day. However, the promo for last single G.U.Y. proved that she's still got it in her, and hopefully it's a sign of things to come for LG5.

7. For her to come out of her arse

Now this is a contentious one, does anyone else wish Gaga would just lighten.the.f***.up? I mean, does she have to take everything so seriously, and attach meaning to every single thing she creates? Can't things just BE? I don't need to hear her banging on about "reverse Warholian experiences" and the like - if the music is good enough, it will speak for itself.

Watching the post-Artpop rebuild of Lady Gaga has certainly been interesting. She's proved herself to be a fantastic jazz artist on her Tony Bennett duets album (always good to have a fall back option), won over new fans with her stunning Oscar performances and rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl, as well as launching herself as a proper actress with her role on American Horror Story: Hotel.

We know that she's been working on new material with old collaborator producer RedOne, who was responsible for some of her biggest hits, including Just Dance, Bad Romance and Poker Face. She's also been in the studio with disco legend Nile Rodgers, and super producer Mark Ronson - the man behind 2015's monster smash, 'Uptown Funk'.

The signs are looking very hopeful for LG5, so let's keep all opposable joints crossed that it recaptures her glory days, and becomes the album we all want and deserve.

Do you agree/disagree with these? Which are most important? Will she do any of these? So many questions ~

7 is BY FAR the most important, followed by 2 and 1, but the latter is more of a general thing that every album should aim for really. The look/videos are definitely important, but that's not really where it went so badly wrong.

But yes, basically focus on delivering GOOD music (as much as I hate stuff like Speechless and So Happy I Could Die, they are clearly not terrible songs, just not to my tastes) and stop trying to always make some kind of STATEMENT. Unless that statement is ''HEY, I STILL GOT IT'', then by all means state away, Lady.

I think 2/3 are the most important for her career. She needs to stop trying to be so GRAND and just make exciting music that has wide appeal. They are all essential really.. also a less messy release campaign with no emergency releases or meltdowns will be a bonus ;o

I agree with the last four. In principle I agree with the first one, but "all killer, no filler" is very hard for anyone to achieve and I believe her debut had the most filler of all.

For chart success / her career I guess #2 and #3 are important but they're not necessarily something I want. Not when they're dragging Aura and Venus. I loved what Artpop was doing as an album and that's what Gaga is for me - though I guess she can strike a balance as Do What U Want is commercial / radio-friendly and one of my very favourite songs from her.

The thing that caught my eye was "Queen of Reinvention"... Why? Because she released a jazz album?

I don't see issue with trying to reinvent the wheel, so long as it's done well. Songs like Judas/scheiße pushed it quite far but still had major catchy hooks.

The writer of that article has got it spot on. For me, the most important thing is that she chills the f*** out and just aims to make genuinely good music again. It's GREAT if there's a genuine deeper meaning behind a song, but it feels as though she's been TRYING to make an album with meaning at the expense of the music.

She had style AND substance with The Fame Monster and even (the less well-received) Born This Way. Let's go back to that.

I agree with the majority of them although I love how seriously she takes it, even back to the fame days she's been very intense about her music and I think that's just imperative to her.

Oh yes I agree, I definitely want her to take her music and creative control seriously, but we as listeners don't really need to SEE or HEAR how seriously she is taking it because it does distance some from enjoying the actual music. Take control and be deadly serious, but loosen up in live performances and through the actual music please pirate.gif

The whole article is crap. A big turd which only shows an artist's product through one lens of commercialism and copies-sold success. Which is dumb and so one-sided. Yes, Artpop wasn't quite a masterpiece she hyped it to be. That's no reason to create such shit articles which shame her for not doing what other people necessarily want her to do. Yes, put people like her in a box because it's really the best thing to do. Yay for boxes and creative unfreedom and f***ing idiotic 'fans' who shouldn't even be called that. Ugh

1. It's hard to not have filler so this is just asking for the impossible really

2. She can do it if she wants. People will still be gagging.
'Stick to the formula'. That is actually offensive for a creative artist. What the f***. This already gives you a hint the author probably won't get all sane in the last five 'steps towards accepting pop Jesus into your music'. :/

3. Like she ever was not mainstream? Give me a break.

4. Who doesn't f***ing give promises and don't deliver on them?! Coughcough Rihanna omg and nobody cares now she's become active again. So bitches PLEASE, you're just lazy and struggling to give solid reasons now

5. Sometimes pre-album hype doesn't need the post-release campaign? This is all too much stereotypical release strategy formulaic bullshit. Who said this was a standard for a 'successful' album release anyway?! You do this if you want to stay afloat otherwise we will shame you for not doing what fans want!!1

6. Okay, this one I might agree with actually. Because I miss her amazing videos. Still, GUY got a great video and it was quite enough to for the era I thought.

7. Now this is the one I have the most beef with. Then let's eat.
It's not a bad thing. Once again, people just want brainless dead pop songs with little to no meaning. When they have a meaning, no one really cares anyway. God forbid Gaga wants to change something in the pop industry by making people realize that songs and music can actually make you think and not just pop your pussy on a Saturday night in your local club. The latter genre is already occupied by the Guettas, Calvins, Aviciis, etc. Do we really need more? Ms Gaga can put as much meaning to the songs as she needs. If the song is good, then why the f*** should it matter anyway?!

And also, hunnies bunnies, if you ever think not releasing a successful album will ruin her career, you have a surprise coming within the next few years.

The surprise of this never happening, that is.

7 is a bit too far in my opinion as it's one of the main reasons I love Gaga and find her so interesting she clearly loves what she does and I love hearing about the meaning of tracks and videos and how they relate to her moods and feelings.
I do want a big look / video from her next era though.

Whatever she does next, she is unlikely to return to the height of success at the beginning of her career. Joanne was a good album overall and much better than ArtPop. I think I'd like her to continue in the vein of Joanne as it contained some more mature material than some of her previous work.

I agree with this in a way. I definitely prefer Joanne to ARTPOP smile.gif
