All Hail The Queen: Madonna Is Billboard’s Woman of the Year

QUOTE
Madonna will receive Billboard’s 2016 Woman of the Year award at the 11th annual Billboard Women In Music event in New York City.

The Queen of Pop will bless us fellow commoners on Dec. 9 when she accepts the honor, which will air Dec. 12 on Lifetime.

“Madonna is one of a miniscule number of super-artists whose influence and career transcend music,” said Janice Min, president and chief creative officer of The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group. “With her creative vision, relentless innovation, and dedication to philanthropic causes, she is an inspiration to hundreds of millions of people around the world, all while shattering every career record out there. She is an important feminist on top of that, a one-of-a-kind artist who’s used her influence to change the conversation around women, sexuality and equal rights.”

Last year, Madonna extended her own record as the highest-grossing female touring artist of all time with the Rebel Heart Tour. Here’s some numbers jargon from Billboard:

Her Rebel Heart Tour, which wrapped in March, solidified her status as one of the biggest touring acts of all time. Madonna sold more than 1 million tickets and walked away with $170 million. That makes her the highest grossing solo touring artist in Billboard Boxscore history (the archives go back to 1990) with a staggering $1.31 billion in total concert grosses.

We should also make note of Madge’s philanthropic efforts with her Raising Malawi organization as well. She’s currently constructing Malawi’s first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit, The Mercy James Institute of Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care facility, and it’s scheduled to open next year.

Fantastic that she's still recognised as such an influential and powerful artist! I feel like this award hasn't just been given to her based on just her past glories either.

Madonna appeared at Billboard's Woman of the Year last night:

.....

Love the outfit! Certainly a world away from the Met Gala getup. kink.gif

Apparently Labrinth performed a mashup of 'Ray of Light', 'Frozen' and 'Like a Prayer' - I'm not a particular fan of Labrinth, although I like some of his music, but just reading that makes me so keen to watch! Pity it doesn't seem to be online yet.

The video has been doing the rounds on Facebook all day. It's great to see she can still hold the attention of a room and later the public with her words. I got so used to her ramblings on social media which had grammar and spelling mistakes galore, which just distracts you from what she has to say, but that speech had the vibes of the 90s Madonna.

It's a fantastic speech, I've rewatched three or four times today.

Labrinth's Madonna tribute:

Not sure what happened to 'Ray of Light' which I read had been performed, but it was a lovely tribute nonetheless. Really liked the arrangement for 'Frozen' - I know the original production is what makes the song so special, but a stripped back piano performance like that works wonders!

Billboard have also uploaded the Madonna speech to their YouTube, which can be seen in the link Bal posted:

The one I had seen on Facebook had been edited down to about four or five minutes so my response a couple of posts above was towards that. Having seen the full 10 minutes, I am completely in awe. Easily one of the best put together, emotional and heart-felt speeches Madonna has made. Very pleased it seems to be going semi-viral because people need to see this.

I suspect that could be likely, but I feel it would be Labrinth playing on piano whilst Madonna song, much like what happened to the supposed Alicia Keys collaboration.

I think it would be great if Madonna could do a vocal collaboration with someone, as in someone whose voice compliments hers and they share a real connection, opposed to a rent-a-rapper-feature. I feel like the closest attempt at that was 'Love Story' with Prince but the song itself just didn't work.

Selena Gomez was awarded Billboard's Woman of the Year last night, so it's a year since Madonna accepted the accolade.

I'm still in awe of her speech. Really intelligently written and delivered, both powerful and moving. It was so nice to see this side of Madonna being praised by the media and the public as it's usually negative things that get published about her and, even for a while, people were reminded just why she's referred to as Queen of Pop.

I completely forgot about this, so I'm so glad it's had a bump. The speech, as you say, is incredible and a true representation of the woman I love. She is woman of the year, every year tbh.

There's a full uncensored version here:

"I'm a different kinda feminist. I'm a bad feminist."

"People say I'm so controversial, but I think the most controversial thing I've ever done was stick around."

"Put your focus on what you have to say to the world, not what the world has to say about you."

"There are some very good men worth back, but not because they are men, because they are worthy."

This speech rivals her 1990 interview about 'Justify My Love'.
