New teaser track was published this week.
It's very late 90s trance. Produced by Stuart Price.
I do like it a lot. Better than the stuff on their last album - apart from Axis.
also doing 4 nights at the Royal Opera House. Got my tickets....!
I didn't think much to the new track but do like PSB.
To me it sounds fairly similar to what they were going for on Electric, I've only recently got around to giving that album a listen and it is so magnificent. 'Love Is A Bourgeois Construct' is fast ascending the ranks of their best songs for me!
Graham Norton played a radio mix of "Inner sanctum" on BBC Radio 2 today, in case anyone wants to hear it. I can't post links it seems, but it's at 1:27:35 on the show. He also talks about the new album for a bit and mentions a four part special on PSB coming up in a few months.
I heard it this morning...it's a bit of a banger isn't it? I do love Pet Shop Boys anyway so I'm excited to hear what this will sound like. I really got into them around the time they released 'Yes' and won their Outstanding Contribution BRIT (2009, I think?). I loved 'Elysium' that followed up, wasn't too keen on the last album, so hopefully this will be a good 'un.
For me, Inner Sanctum is like a carbon copy of "Axis" but only a bit mediocre. Look forward to their new album though.
Inner Sanctum is slowly growing on me, but I'm looking forward to hearing The Pop Kids when that premieres.
Electric remains one of my favourite albums so if they're going in that direction again I'll be very happy!
I really love this, incredibly instant and the spoken verse is great, similar to Saint Etienne's fantastic Over The Border in a way. Their best lead single since Love Etc for me, I feel like its 1993 listening to this but in a very good way, the modern production flourishes bring it bang up to date.
This is fantastic!
Utter brilliance !
LOVE!
Thought I'd post this as I couldn't find the thread the other day and they've just performed 'The Pop Kids' on The Graham Norton Show as I write this.
For me and most fans/critics, 'Electric' was their best album since 'Very'. But I'm someone who defends the underrated three albums that followed 'Very' and also loves the three albums that came after those (yes, even 'Elysium' - as much as there's a couple of duff tracks). In fact, I might as well say I have no issue with any of their albums really .
I just hope this can be on the same level as 'Electric' in terms of how much I like it, and it seems likely as it's getting equally strong critical acclaim like 'Electric' did for the first time in 20 years for them and both 'Inner Sanctum' and 'The Pop Kids' are sitting well with me so far. The B-Sides to 'The Pop Kids' also sound rather good too.
Another new track from the album, 'Happiness', was made available on Wednesday which I've only just stumbled upon.
This album is brilliant!
Happiness, The Pop Kids and Say It To Me are my three favourites at the moment.
Burn and The Dictator Decides are my favourites of the non-singles, I could imagine Kylie singing the former somehow.
I gave this album earlier today - some really good tracks on there, The Pop Kids is definetly my favourite, I'm glad to see they haven't abandoned their catchy pop song side.
The likes of Thursday and LIABC were better though.
I've heard clips of this album on iTunes and very surprised. It sounds really good. I actually think "pop kids" is one of the weaker tracks. I really like undertow, happiness, sad robot world and say it to me. There aren't many of today's acts who will still be churning out decent albums like this in 30 years time.
Listening through now, I'm about halfway through and it sounds decent. 'Twenty-Something' is perhaps their worst song ever though.
Really? I listened to the snippets and that's the only one I decided to download, I love the little instrumental hook it's got going on.
Why do you think it's their worst song ever?!! Which it surely can't be with the borefest of Elysium in existence.
bought the album - it's an oddity for them, inasmuch as it's almost entirely house-dance based with repetitive short hooks, lyrics are fairly minimal bar the one track that sounds out of place (The Pop Kids) - that's also still the best track for me, but Happiness is the other standout, a cowboy rave hoedown that will bring much fun and loathing. The rest? I like them all, but the B sides of Pop Kids are more typical of their more usual stuff.
I'm not going to see it as one of my fave PSB albums, but it's interesting to see them getting edgy-ish at this stage in their career, but expect the next one to be very different.
I've always liked the pet shop boys but their material over the last few releases misses so.e of the magic, good to see them still going g but like the last fewalbus it will chart top 5 and drop out of the charts quickly.
So I succumbed and bought the full thing... it's sort of okay but I think I'll get bored of it quite quickly. The Pop Kids, Twenty Something and The Dictator Decides are my favourites.
It's *very* nearly as good as Electric, but that was a really amazing album so it's hard to live up to. I'd have this tracklist personally:
1. Inner Sanctum (think this would have been a great opener to set up the mood, seems odd in the middle)
2. The Pop Kids
3. Burn
4. Happiness (these four songs in a row would have made such a fantastic and euphoric opening)
5. Twenty-Something
6. The Dictator Decides
7. Sad Robot World (closing the slower middle section)
8. Say It To Me
9. Groovy
10. Pazzo! (I see these two songs as the 'outliers' which are good but would fit better at the end imo)
I'd ditch the other two songs which I find uninteresting and I've been skipping.
Definitely one of the best of their recent albums! 'Undertow' is a proper earworm
'Burn' is absolutely fantastic, that's a big fave for me!
I expect Burn will be the next single, or a single at some point, the fans seem to be universal in their appreciation for it and PSB usually often seem to release fan favourites as singles. It's my favourite too. Presumably Happiness might be a single too.
#3 on both UK and German album chart
Ranking the 12 tracks on the album:
1. The Pop Kids
2. Say It To Me
3. Happiness
4. Into Thin Air
5. Groovy
6. Inner Sanctum
7. Burn
8. Sad Robot World
9. The Dictator Decides
10. Twenty-something
11. Pazzo!
12. Undertow
Moderators should move this topic to dance music section.
Second single is "Twenty Something" released on June 17th. And it has a new video too.
So "The Pop Kids" or "Happiness" doesn't get a video, but the second worst song on the album does?
Oh f***ing f*** f*** f***. Why would they do that?!
Why is it such a bad choice? I thought it was an obvious second single when I listened to the album...
Not a great video and one of the tracks on the album that hasn't registered with me much. Certainly not commercial in the way that Happiness very much is, or especially classy like Say It To Me. Neil & Chris have a long history of not releasing obvious potential single album tracks as singles - frankly they have a stack of B sides that could have made terrific singles, so I'm not surprised in that sense.
My choice of singles, in order, would be:
1. The Pop Kids
2. Happiness
3. Say It To Me
4. Inner Sanctum
5. Groovy
Twenty something looks likely to miss a top 200 position this week. I genuinely thought they would have enough of a fan-base to secure a top 200 entry.
What was the first single released from the album and where did it chart?
'The Pop Kids', #128 according to Wikipedia.
Neil revealed on their 6music show on Friday that the next single will be Say It To Me
I reckon they don't really care about the single and just focus on touring.
That's a way better choice than 'Twenty-Something', but I can't help but feel they've really botched these choices. Not that it matters if nothing stands a chance of doing anything regardless.
Yes! That's my favourite song on the album after "The Pop Kids"!
Afterwards I'd suggest "Burn", and then either "Happiness", "Inner Sanctum" or "Into Thin Air".
It's about 9th on the album for me in terms of my favourites...I half expected Burn to be next, maybe it will be the last single from the era if there is to be another.
In terms of Sales Chart (because I don't care about streaming), The Pop Kids fell just short of the top 40, and Twentysomething just short of the top 75. Say It To Me is a great choice of single for a Radio 2 audience, Happiness more the younger crowd, and Burn for the dancefloor.
I'll be at the Royal Opera House a week on Wednesday so I'll be reviewing the gig....
Seeing them on November 12th!
Yes at Say It To Me as the third single choice. Infinitely better than Twenty-Something. Burn, Happiness, or Undertow would all make ideal 4th singles.
Fabulous Show, Inner Sanctum, I even bought a programme and 12" single, something I haven't done this century in either case.
The Sun gives a good review with photos showcasing the fab stage design from the Olympics-designer:

I'd add some key tracks off Super were missing (Happiness and Say It To Me), along with many of the 80's classics and early 90's classics, more recent key album singles were present and correct, and many oldies were reinvented quite substantially, especially Home And Dry, a pleasant acoustic single that had a bit more depth to it in a new lush arrangement. Left To My Own Devices and others were more playful, not least the end tracks which had hordes of dancers in inflated fat suits, amusingly.
Such is the depth of their back catalogue, though, and the quality of the new material, the PSB's are NEVER Being Boring (and yes that one was missing too!). I may be biased, but they've never let me down in concert or on record
My main complaint? Sat at the upper circle facing the stage, the inventive light show was dazzling, and sadly quite literally spots-before-the-eyes time from strong lights attacking the retina head-on, so I had to keep turning away from the stage. Happily, they are now doing Bournemouth so I can go again and get a bit closer
Loads of my friends went to this yesterday. Is there a full set list available to see anywhere? I tried looking for one.

The main surprise is that In The Night (Clothes Show TV theme from the 80's) hasn't been done before in concert! That was always the track I liked to play when friends said "I hate the Pet Shop Boys, everything they've done" then get them to say, "ooh I like that one, who is it?" before they backtrack about it being neil's voice they have a problem with..
Just gone tonight, I have no words, it was incredible. The production was spectacular and the setlist was brilliant.
Loved seeing Vocal, Se A Vide E, Left To My Own Devices in particular <3 The former hits HARD, if it had been a Calvin Harris single it would have been huge. A couple of unexpected choices too which I loved, like In The Night as mentioned above.
I've got me ticket for Feb in Bournemouth - hoping they shuffle around the tracks a bit by then, just to add a bit of newness flavour. Just off to play me 12" Inner Sanctum now...
Undertow confirmed as the next single. 12" and Remix EP is out on April 21st.
Why have they not considered 'Burn'?
According to their new book, Annually, they'd earmarked Burn as a single but decided against it after the Orlando nightclub shooting. They had played in Orlando the week before apparently and didn't feel that it would be appropriate to release a single with the lyrics 'burn this disco down'.
