Exciting news coming out of the BBC today - it sounds like we're going back to internal, and the BBC are partnering up with the record label, BMG! ohmy.gif

QUOTE
The BBC has confirmed the United Kingdom’s participation in the 65th Eurovision Song Contest which will be held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in May 2020.

BBC Studios will once again produce the BBC’s coverage of the biggest and most watched song competition in the world.

Also announced is a brand new collaboration between BBC Studios and music company BMG in order to find a song and artist(s) to represent the United Kingdom in next year’s contest.

Following a process in which BBC Studios approached a number of record labels to pitch ideas for 2020, it was clear that BMG shared the BBC and BBC Studios’ vision of selecting a song with broad international appeal and securing an artist who embodies the spirit and values of the Eurovision Song Contest.

BBC Studios will be working alongside BMG’s UK music publishing and frontline recordings team based in London to select the United Kingdom’s Eurovision 2020 entry which will then be released and published by BMG.

BMG has a proven track record in worldwide hits, publishing songs such as Someone You Love (Lewis Capaldi), Don’t Call Me Up (Mabel), Shotgun (George Ezra) and I’ll Be There (Jess Glynne), and also masterminding Kylie Minogue’s recent number one album Golden. No strangers to Eurovision, BMG published the 2015 winning entry for Sweden, Heroes performed by Mans Zelmerlow and signed Eurovision winner Netta following her win in 2018.

Kate Phillips, Controller Entertainment Commissioning for the BBC, says: “Our commitment to finding the right song has never been higher and this collaboration with BMG, who have access to world class songwriters, is a genuinely exciting prospect and I am certain that together we can find the best song and artist possible for 2020.”

Mel Balac, Creative Director for BBC Studios, says: “The Eurovision Song Contest is a huge global event and our collaboration with BMG marks an important turning point for the UK at Eurovision. We very much hope this marks the start of an exciting new chapter.”

Alistair Norbury, President, Repertoire & Marketing UK for BMG, says: “Eurovision is the biggest television showcase for music in the world and it’s an honour to be selected to help choose the UK’s entry at Rotterdam 2020. Eurovision plays to our strength as the only fully-integrated publishing company and record label. We can’t wait to get started working with the BBC to give it the best possible shot we can.”

Cautiously optimistic but this is the sort of news we want to be hearing. Maybe the idea that You Decide has been on the whole embarassingly budget has finally got through.

Posted by: danG Sep 16 2019, 10:40 AM

that sounds promising. I know we all complained about internal selection years ago but You Decide was even worse.

Posted by: AdamAloud Sep 16 2019, 12:34 PM

Well the only way is up and record label involvement is certainly promising.

Definitely believe internal is the way to go, the British public cannot be trusted in a public vote.

Posted by: gooddelta Sep 16 2019, 01:42 PM

Cautiously optimistic about this. It will hopefully be something credible in a similar vein to what The Netherlands tend to send.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised at it being another MOR entry or even UK country leaning effort as BMG are currently behind the careers of the likes of Kylie and Rick Astley etc are they not? They are a decent label so hopefully will get the song, artist, staging and promo spot on, but I wouldn’t expect a major trend-following hit single out of it.

I’m not anticipating the UK to suddenly turn everything around at all but it would be fantastic to escape the bottom ten at this point.

Posted by: Brett-Butler Sep 16 2019, 03:50 PM

This should be good news - as BMG are a record label, they have a vested interest in selecting a song that is going to appeal to as many people across Europe in order to fill their coffers with that lovely, lovely money, so they're not going to go down the route of sending someone with a "story" (as has been the case with previous entries in the prior selection process), or someone that doesn't have a big appeal. I'm guessing they're either going to select an emerging artist from their roster with the hopes of Eurovision being their big platform, or a well known artist who still sells a decent (but not silver/gold selling) amount without troubling the singles chart as promotion for their latest album.

Or they could just mess everything up. I still wouldn't put it past them to do so.

Posted by: Popchartfreak Sep 16 2019, 04:26 PM

It was the only way to go - a record company knows what sells, it's why most modern hits are created by teams of established songwriters and produced to appeal to streaming. It's not exactly innovative, but then the UK hasn't been innovative in Eurovision since errr ever. All we ever did was get proper hitmaking songwriters and acts on board when we wanted to win, and then when they moved to random competitions of acts it became much more hit and largely miss with diminishing returns as the incentive for songwriters and acts to enter shrank to almost zero, we were so ridiculously bad and living on past glories moaning about everyone hating the UK when they just aren't fussed about the endless mostly-bland or old-fashioned entries...

Posted by: Burns Sep 16 2019, 04:59 PM

Promising news.

Lucie Jones with something along the lines of "Shady Lady" (with Mark Ronson "Late Night Feelings" album style production) I'd enjoy after the past few years...

Posted by: Cqmerqn Sep 16 2019, 07:09 PM

Can we just choose Eleni Foureira?

Posted by: ScottyEm Sep 16 2019, 07:17 PM

Thank god for that! YouDecide was well-meaning but ultimately useless.

I would love them to go bold and do a “Love injected” or something.

Posted by: Lynettefab Nov 12 2019, 04:28 AM

My song is finished, but just because Ive done my song doesnt mean that the rest of you have to rush to get songs finished. Weve only got about 2 months until TiBB Eurovision 2019 happens.

When I check who she follows, the account I see at the top of the list is RuPaul's Drag Race UK fans, which is not an account I follow. Eurovision and BBCEurovision are next up

That's not the only thing fueling the rumour anyway..

Sam Bailey has now denied that it's her - it wouldn't be Eurovision season without some wild UK rumors, like back in the pre-You Decide days there'd be about one a week.

That Fleur video does make me wonder though. "Calm before the storm" makes me think it's probably not just her announcing a bunch of tour dates but I don't think she's actually signed to BMG so...idk what that means. I'm pretty much of the view that we won't really know who it is until the song drops in the first week of March (probably)

Fleur IS signed to BMG

Posted by: ScottyEm Jan 27 2020, 07:44 PM

Interesting how her mini tour conveniently ends on 18th April?

Posted by: Cqmerqn Jan 27 2020, 08:29 PM

Signed to BMG and tour ends 18 April?

Omg she’s bluffing SURELY

Posted by: ScottyEm Jan 27 2020, 09:18 PM

I’m beginning to be convinced it’s her now. Even the bloody flyer at the top corner loosely resembles the UK flag. Also, if she wasn’t representing the UK, she would’ve said so as acts usually do when the rumour mill picks up.

Posted by: J▲hq Jan 27 2020, 09:52 PM

On the one hand, doing Eurovision could really help her sell those tour tickets. On the other hand...I would expect the UK act to be present at Eurovision In Concert in Amsterdam, and one of her tour dates is a direct clash.

Posted by: Cqmerqn Jan 27 2020, 10:08 PM

Spoil sport x

Posted by: LexC Jan 27 2020, 10:16 PM

I predict that this will be a fun distraction story for this point in the season but ultimately nothing will come of it.

Posted by: mald487 Jan 28 2020, 02:08 PM

It's not Fleur.

In previous years when they BBC have selected internally the acts have NEVER dropped hints on Facebook. The beeb really doesn't like it, and the one time the act was leaked/guessed early(Blue) they confirmed it shortly after. So if it was Fleur, we'd have a statement by now.

Song being announced on Radio 1 and 2 Thursday morning!

Posted by: gooddelta Feb 22 2020, 08:33 PM

Wow, a Radio 1 announcement is very interesting and unexpected, very intrigued now.

Posted by: Cqmerqn Feb 22 2020, 08:34 PM

Excuse me, but RADIO 1?

Omg it’s gonna be a RELEVANT ARTIST

Posted by: Cqmerqn Feb 22 2020, 08:38 PM

Going by BMG artists that R1 play, it has to be... Mabel (who has a song out next week) or Jess Glynne

Want foxes tho

Posted by: Liаm Feb 22 2020, 08:39 PM

Watch as we actually get an actual artist and it ends up being Jess f***ing Glynne

Posted by: Cqmerqn Feb 22 2020, 08:43 PM

Mabel stops touring from April-May, is signed by BMG and has a song out next week

BYEEEEEEEE

Posted by: LexC Feb 22 2020, 08:48 PM

Radio 1 being involved in the premiere is a pretty good sign! I trust the Nancy Drews on twitter will narrow in on somebody soon though.

Posted by: gooddelta Feb 22 2020, 08:48 PM

Mabel would surely be too good to be true.

Don't Call Me Up would have been an incredible entry for us last year, it was the perfect length too.

Posted by: Cqmerqn Feb 22 2020, 08:48 PM

ALSO

Mabel’s manager earlier this year, “this is a really big year for her, plus her next song is massive”

Posted by: Klumzee Feb 22 2020, 08:50 PM

Mabel would be great! Also relevant to today's markets but has broad appeal. The fact that R1 is making the announcement is exciting as it is.

Posted by: Liаm Feb 22 2020, 08:51 PM

I feel like maybe it's written by Mabel or Jess but isn't by them but they're gonna try and make a thing of the song and make it a hit before the contest?

Posted by: ScottyEm Feb 22 2020, 08:52 PM

Radio 1!! This is a BIG deal!

Posted by: Jordan Lee Feb 22 2020, 08:52 PM

It’s probably gonna be JLS.

I don’t think an artist whos genuinely successful like Mabel or Jess would do Eurovision. It’s not really something what’s taken seriously in the UK tbh outside the select audience and they don’t really need to do it. I could well be wrong but I can’t see it.

Posted by: AdamAloud Feb 22 2020, 08:52 PM

This was the case in The Netherlands as well, until anouk took a splash. You never know

Posted by: Jonjo Feb 23 2020, 11:47 AM

If it's true, I'm low-key nervous about Mabel ngl.

A- She isn't the most confident performer & I feel that's a big part of Eueovision performances and B- if we fail to win with her (irregardless of whether we finish at #4, 8 or 20) the casuals will be there to scrutinise and be all "see we can't even send our biggest artist, we have to pull out" or whatever. That 2nd one will be a burden on me no matter who the artist is though I think, unless it is Sheeran or Adele tbh. laugh.gif

Posted by: I. :II: z Feb 23 2020, 11:51 AM

I'm trusting nothing. Even if it is a name we know and they could be an Anouk the song might be bad or the staging might be awful, we know nothing and there's so much that could go wrong yet.

Posted by: LexC Feb 23 2020, 01:09 PM

I mean this Mabel rumour is at least based on actual reality but it probably will just end up being speculative fiction. I'm happy with the fact that it's on Radio 1 as that suggests it's at least a song that would belong in the 2010s somewhere but I am leaving it at that!

Posted by: Cqmerqn Feb 23 2020, 01:22 PM

Oh yeah even if it is some random, the fact that R1 are likely to support it is amazing!

I imagine it’ll be on the Spotify playlists too... eek.

Posted by: Liаm Feb 23 2020, 01:28 PM

My niggle is I just can't see how someone in as good a spot in her career as Mabel would do Eurovision with the reputation it has over here! I know it sometimes takes one big artist taking the plunge to change things (see: Netherlands with Anouk as mentioned) but we've been burned so many times I'm not allowing myself to think it's gonna be Mabel with an undeniable absolute stomper of a song.

I'll be happy though with a song that sounds like it came from the past decade instead of the 00s even if it is a randomer. As I said previously, I think most likely it's maybe written by a big-ish artist and is a current song they're gonna try and push as a hit beforehand. That or R1 are gonna grin and bear it for 5 minutes to give the premiere a bit more reach and never speak of it again laugh.gif

Posted by: _____________ Feb 23 2020, 04:29 PM

I think it's important to consider that a lot of artists out there, regardless of their fame or levels of success, do watch Eurovision. They enjoy it and many of them probably grew up and dreamt of appearing on such a stage someday. Look at Australian acts like Dami, Jess Mauboy, Kate... All of them said that they grew up aspiring to perform on that stage. Difference being, Australian attitudes towards ESC are different to those in the UK. In Australia it's not seen as a career killer, especially when our biggest pop star can't get a hit outside Aus. To us, it is seen as an opportunity to engage with international music fans and if you don't win, you represented your country and showed good sportsmanship. I think that's what Eurovision was intended to be, and Aussies truly enbody that.

The Brits pessimism towards Eurovision has created a double edged sword, where no one wants to be seen as "seriously into it", and also believe it would damage their career. Having said that, what evidence exists to imply that doing Eurovision is a career ruining move? The vast majority of UK acts of recent years are stars that have faded, who enjoyed some short term resurgence, or new talent that had nothing to lose and everything to gain. With songs that, in any other circumstance, would not have made it past radio producers and into mainstream channels anyway. So to call Eurovision career suicide is simply unfounded as, no shade, you need a career to ruin a career.

There are a number of variables here that could work to Mabel's (or similar) advantage:

1. The childhood dream. She's half Swedish and grew up there, where Eurovision is respected and a big cultural deal.
2. Mabel is arguably in an untouchable phase, where whatever she releases is lapped up by radio. You're only as good as your last hit, and thankfully Don't Call Me Up is still top 40 on iTunes and enjoying its 40-somethingth week on chart.
3. She is signed to a major label, that can put clauses in contracts. As she has some industry clout, she can offer to do the unthinkable in exchange for BBC contracts. These come in the form of prime time performance slots/radio playlisting and other promotional tactics to ensure that Mabel as an artist will be continually pushed, regardless of the result, until people forget.
4. If the UK wins, she will be known as the woman that could. 23 years after the UK's last victory, she was the one to break their longest winning drought and will always have that.
5. If all else fails and the UK flops, just blame Brexit. People will then laud Mabel as a saviour who just couldn't connect with the hearts of evil continental folk who just want to see them fail.
6. Bitch needs a European hit that isn't DCMU.

So yeah Mabel for ESC yeww

Posted by: Cameron Feb 23 2020, 04:46 PM

Plus this year is quite weak like 2017 so if the UK releases a banger they could definitely be left-hand side of the scoreboard if it is pulled off live.

Posted by: LexC Feb 23 2020, 05:34 PM

Mabel does also fit the "massive diva" rumour that some songwriter allegedly put on their facebook and the "one word, five letters" rumour that was doing the rounds at the start of February too.

WHY would R1 play steps

Posted by: Jordan Lee Feb 23 2020, 08:48 PM

Steps are a lot more likely. Their last lead single screamed Eurovision.

Mabel would be a big shock like she don’t need to do it. You usually do Eurovision when you want to revive or career or when you want to begin one. She’s just won a BRIT and I’d think a lot of her team would advise her against it as well like it is huge etc but 90% of people from the UK apart from the odd gay man think it’s a pile of crap and treat is a total p*ss take. And she’s not really Eurovision like either tbh.

I think it's important to consider that a lot of artists out there, regardless of their fame or levels of success, do watch Eurovision. They enjoy it and many of them probably grew up and dreamt of appearing on such a stage someday.

But it's not necessarily their decision. They can't just wake up one day and decide they are doing it. Many people are involved from the record co. to the BBC. If someone doesn't think it's a good idea - it won't happen. It can hurt the careers of even the most bulletproof (woo woo) artist.

STEPS would be a good fit in all honesty. They're really not going to be as big "a mess" as people think. Their performances are always consistently solid, even now (save for Lisa who is very miss & miss kink.gif ). But I'd be pretty underwhelmed tbh! Hopeful that we'd get a banger, but underwhelmed as I feel they're too "Eurovision cliche" and we need to remove that from the UK's Eurovision thoughts laugh.gif But yeah, I can't see why Radio 1 would have as much interest if it is them?

Mabel is definitely much more of the demographic and kinda the person we need right now. I agree with the poster who said that she's in a strong enough position to bounce back from an under performing song in Eurovision if it was to do the usual UK Eurovision performance in the results.

Could Kylie be an option? 5 letters, one word. Signed to BMG (I think - well, going by the tweet that kye shared about STEPS signing their deal laugh.gif). Diva. etc..

Steps are a lot more likely. Their last lead single screamed Eurovision.

And this is the UK's (both professionals and fans) biggest problem with Eurovision - thinking that an ideal entry has got to be a dance-around-your-handbag, high NRG nod to Eurovision past. I loved that single but it ISN'T what we should send. We tried once (13 years ago) with something similar - look how well that turned out. It needs to be a song that wasn't (shudders) 'written with Eurovision in mind'. That's why Sweden does so well at it - they just send a pop song regardless of what genre it is... or if it's Eurovisiony enough. Even they got rid of the camp schlager when it stopped working so well for them and they realised it was out of date. We have to start having the same attitude.

QUOTE
"I am always the one who goes, 'No, absolutely not!', but then I watch it and think well, we could do it. There is always a few texts going back and forwards. I honestly think that if you do that show you can't ever go into it expecting to win and we would have to have that attitude. We've always been so lucky in everything we've ever done and I think the experience would be amazing. It's just that feeling of, we wouldn't want to come last because that would be really bad. Nobody wants to come last, do they?"

We could do a lot worse than sending Steps (and we have done, many times over), but personally I really hope that they don't do it. They did very well in their last era and they'd risk undoing that goodwill if they flopped at Eurovision. I don't think the potential benefit of exposure across Europe/Australia is worth it when it could damage their reputation in the UK.

I'm not saying that I think Steps are above Eurovision. I do think they're above being the entry for a country that doesn't take the contest at all seriously though.

As for Mabel, it would certainly be a turn up for the books to send an established & current artist. However, unless I've not seen her best performances, I've yet to be particularly impressed by her live vocals or stage presence... so in that respect I'm not wildly enthused by the prospect of her doing it.

I mean it would be good if we had a good song / good finishing position yes. It’s just outside of this site there isn’t a massive market for Eurovision in the UK like if you asked the average person on the street they’d likely say it was a pile of **** or a joke etc and Everytime it’s announced who’s doing it there’s negativity surrounding it before hand. It’s not as if I want the UK to fail or I personally think Eurovision is naff but most people do and the artist we get won’t change thoughts. But yeah I agree with your point.

I disagree. People will still think Eurovision is not the most serious thing ever but if you make an effort in a few years the situation can definitely change dramatically. Especially if the effort pays off. All it takes is a handful of Top 10 placings and preferably a win. And of course artists willing to take the heat.

I mean in Russia hardly anyone takes Eurovision very seriously but really big artists are being sent and no one looks at them differently in the slightest after they do it.

He has a point though, I love Steps, but they are not seen as credible. They just aren't, with the greatest will in the world - that'll never change, no matter their success. It all depends on which route you think UK should take - arguably we have done the Steps kinda route before by way of Scooch (high choreographed bubblegum pop) - it didn't go so well. But we send Andrew Lloyd-Webber / Diane Warren penned ballad and it did well. Despite what you think of the song itself, he / she were seen as credible. Times change, if we keep sending disposable pop - there will be very few artists that will be willing to take a shot at it in future through fear of association of the genre.

I don't think it'll be JLS. They've only been back for a week and a half, and all they've done so far is put a new tour on sale, they've even said themselves they've not been in the studio yet.

I think the optimist in me would like to think that with Radio 1 announcing it it could be a more contemporary artist, and I love Mabel, I think she's fantastic so would be a great choice to send her with a really current, upbeat song. The other side of me though wonders if it's just something they'll announce under obligation and then speak no more of five minutes after the fact.

Hurts - they're perennially rumoured, aren't they?
Birdy
Giggs

Wiley
Robyn collaborating with a British writer
Biffy out of Biffy Clyro

Hurts or Birdy are slightly possible I guess. I'd prefer Duffy over Steps (though thought Duffy had 'retired' from mainstream life as she hates it hence why we never hear from her), and tbf Mabel would be a decent send even though I've never been fussed on her. Kylie is a possibility too actually, saw her name mentioned, I think she would now.

I´m sorry but how many times...a current big very successful artist from the UK is NOT going to do Eurovision. They have nothing to gain from it and everything to lose. It will *NOT* be Mabel. I would put my life savings on it.

I heard Drake is rumoured with a song written by Guy Chambers.

Really though there's no reason why we shouldn't be excited by a prospect. It's just a bit of fun guessing who it might be. It will be what it will be. And there are signs suggesting it could be Mabel. Out of the other legit suggestions I'm not sure who Radio 1 would care about?

Dua Lipa is making an announcement on Thursday!!! OMG - She would be amazing! I hope it´s her! laugh.gif

Mabel only has a publishing deal with BMG, she's not signed to them as an artist, it's absolutely not her

(also I don't see why her new single would be released Wednesday when the song premiere is Thursday? radio aren't waiting a day to play brand new Mabel)

Fair point about having fun guessing who it will be and sorry if I came across a bit snarky with the Dua Lip thing.

I would love it to be someone with the profile of Mabel, and I will truly eat my hat if its her, but I´m not going to get too excited just because the reveal day happens to be a quiet day for her schedule wise.

She may as well do I’m A Celeb if she’s doing Eurovision for what it’ll do to her career.

If she’s doing it, I take it Tones and I is representing Australia as well laugh.gif laugh.gif

I’d bet my username mabel doesn’t do it anyway, it’ll probably be someone no one has ever heard of.

But this is exactly the point I´m making. It´s not just the opinion of the artist "oh I don´t mind doing it", theres the legal side of it of well, their record labels etc deciding on what and what isn´t a good investment of their time.

If anything I would say theres actually MORE chance in the next 10-15 years of Adele doing it, as shes already made her millions and has a global reputation so wouldn´t be tarnished as much.

I don't think anybody said we're definitely sending Mabel? It's literally what the last part of your post says... SPECULATION. Mabel fit a lot of the clues and with R1 supposedly getting involved, it is easy to see why she'd be speculated and talked about. No need to get so irate about people speculating an artist, when none of us have said "OMG YES WE'RE SENDING MABEL!" we know the procedure and we know what we're getting into. laugh.gif

Like I said I just can't stand his voice, like genuinely I don't know how people listen and think it's good laugh.gif

I still hope he does well and the BBC goes into the decade continuing with giving a bit more effort, but I doubt I will like the song with him singing it.

Posted by: I. :II: z Feb 25 2020, 12:25 PM

Best of the rumours so far, he's been on hits within public memory that are generally seen as cool, there's the rumour that he's doing it with his brother writing it which gives it a nice narrative and experience of producing hits. And if it's his brother doing it, still someone with plenty of music industry experience.

I don't know, he could just as easily be promoting something else new.

Posted by: keefyweefy Feb 25 2020, 12:46 PM

And his brother has already had a hand at writing a Eurovision song with Ireland's entry a couple of years back.....
Shame he (John) couldn't put the recent collab on Galantis's album through. Hurriciane is a bit of a crowd pleaser.....

i think bbc would be shooting themselves in the foot if they announce that it’s james newman after graham’s hype video, the promos, the radio 1 + 2 slot, the suggestion we could get 12 points.. it all nods towards someone with a little more clout than the relative of a well known singer. if it turns out to be james and not john, they’re just going to be inundated with ‘who?!’ comments + they’ve lost any kind of hype they’d hope to build.

the sources i’ve seen are still insistent it’s john so who the hell knows! laugh.gif

If that´s it then it´s the first UK entry for a good few years that I have actually liked! I´m not sure it´s THAT competitive, and it´s not going to be a contender, but I could see a scenario where the juries show it a lot of love. I kept my expectations low and I´m pleasantly surprised.

Posted by: ScottyEm Feb 26 2020, 07:01 PM

Well we’ve turned the dial up from 2/10 to 6/10. Well produced, great vox, probably our best song (competitively) since 2011. Needs more movement though, a bit of add-libbing. I think jury support is in the bag, but will need exciting staging to pull in public votes.

Posted by: Burns Feb 26 2020, 07:34 PM

I forgot I was listening to it after the chorus kicked in, literally next to zero impression made. Oops.

Posted by: Vülker Feb 26 2020, 07:40 PM

Yeah this is trying too hard to replicate the vibe between Arcade and Too Late For Love. Decent enough but it just doesn't work as an Eurovision competitive entry for me.

Posted by: darrens94 Feb 26 2020, 07:41 PM

The songs alright but it could do with a better verse and chorus and better vocals but apart from that it’s quite good

Not going to go overboard with hyping it but it shouldn't be embarrassing either.

Posted by: gooddelta Feb 27 2020, 10:04 AM

I think it’s pretty good! I’m hoping it will do well with the juries. I don’t see it lighting up the televotes but hopefully it won’t be bottom five on that metric. Obviously not a winner but I’m glad the BBC are showing some move in the right direction.

I love the "I'll give you my last... Breath". They're endearing.

I like this. Can see it growing, but it's not bad! (Although I was one of like 10 people (in Europe x) to love our entry last year so...)

But at least it is a good quality midtempo ballad, let's see how it does.

Is it though? A drone, two cameras, one actor and one location. I mean it's a good start and a change from the usual but I think Bigger Than Us was more expensive to make (even though the acting work there was ABYSMAL lmao)? All this landscape footage is tricking y'all oops.

This is okay on first listen. Safe and predictable. Sounds like a mid-table at best finish to me. What else is new

Posted by: *Tim Feb 27 2020, 11:03 AM

This isn't going to catch the viewers on first listen

Posted by: darrens94 Feb 27 2020, 11:14 AM

Kind of liking this now after a few listens which isn’t any good for a Eurovision song it needs to catch you on first listen. Is it me or does it sound a lot like ‘Walk Me Home’ especially in the chorus?

Posted by: Lukuzz Feb 27 2020, 11:19 AM

It's pretty decent tbf, a solid 6/10 on first listen, think it'll be a grower however I still think about 20th is its absolute highest in the night. Still it's a step in the right direction ish

Posted by: dan.G Feb 27 2020, 11:21 AM

sounds like we've upgraded from x factor winner 2005 to x factor winner 2015 this year then
it's alright and at least a step in the right direction but I can't see past a low top 20 for it either

I don't think the responses are particularly THAT positive, more relief that we haven't sent an absolute embarrassment again.

It gets better on the 3rd / 4th listen but as someone pointed out, the viewers don't get that on the night. It'll do about as well as Lucy. At least that wouldn't be bottom.

Posted by: ___∆___ Feb 27 2020, 11:48 AM

Solid track and radio friendly - plus backed by a very strong label BMG who will at least get in the ground work for European promo, positives all round TBH.

Posted by: kye Feb 27 2020, 11:57 AM

i think he’s up against it to be honest. to the casual listener, it’s not completely dissimilar to bigger than us - i do think it’s a slightly better track but quite frankly it just looks like michael rice has grown a beard + come back for round 2. there’s no buzz to the performer or the song - they’re going to have to do something extraordinary with staging because i’m not entirely taken on the video + i don’t think i’ll watch it again - i don’t see the budget some others have?

i really can’t believe that execs at bbc + bmg have sat down, having looked at our entries for the last 10 years + chosen this to represent us in a bid to beat the odds. we’ve done the best when a solo female or group have represented us. the times we’ve come last, it’s mostly with a solo male track, including last year?! so how can they go into all of these meetings + come out with.. the same as last year? i don’t understand their thinking - if it was a winning formula then absolutely but it’s clearly not?

promo will be key so that europe can familiarise themselves with the song. i really hope they take to it but, from where i’m standing, it’s no different to bigger than us.

Posted by: RobBot Feb 27 2020, 11:59 AM

It finishes SO abruptly when there could definitely be another 20 seconds at least laugh.gif

I like it and I don’t think it sounds written for Eurovision which is a plus but it’s not something I’d go back to much. Better than 2018 and 2019, I’d say.

You're not hugely wrong but it's important to realise that it's a step in the right direction in terms of it sounding like a fairly current song (maybe a few years out, but it's better than sounding like an X Factor winner's Xmas number 1 from the 00s) that could be feasibly be a hit. I don't think it will do a massive amount more than say Storm or Bigger Than Us but I hope this is a good sign that over the next few years, the BBC will put a bit more effort in. I know it's not A-grade winning contender, but a decent video, a decent enough song that sounds like it might belong in the year its being entered in is a lot for us, our standards are that low and they weren't really going to go from practically last with a dated song to an absolute banger that contended for the win, it's hopefully going to start reversing the way BBC approaches the contest though and maybe we'll get there!

Then again, thinking about it, if this does just come like 20th idk if it'll be enough of a pay-off for them to bother putting in so much effort again when it doesn't do a whole lot better than Storm for example did.

Posted by: I. :II: z Feb 27 2020, 12:11 PM

I think there's a world of difference between this and last year. There's an energy to the song and performer that was categorically not in the bland heap we sent last year.

And I'm not looking at this in the prism of talent show winners, because there is also a chance that this song could be released by a pop singer divorced of that. People around the continent aren't thinking of talent shows either, this pretty much is what a lot of them have gone for recently. It was pretty instant for me and I have the confidence that they're not putting out someone with as many industry connections as James Newman to do him dirty on the staging.

Competently performed male midtempos tend to get at least midtable and I think it'd have easily gotten that in last year's field. This feels way different from any of the You Decide entries last decade.

Posted by: Klaus Feb 27 2020, 12:20 PM

It’s the same song we’ve been sending for the past few years just with a few more hints of individuality and a bit more money spent on the production. It’s just a small step in terms of progression rather than the giant leap we need in terms of getting out the bottom 5.

Posted by: J▲hq Feb 27 2020, 12:44 PM

What I'm gathering from some of these responses is that we need another stage invader moment and for him to not make the silly decision that SuRie did, and go and perform it a second time laugh.gif

I like the song and feel willing to support it which is the most important thing for me. It's going to rely on the juries, maybe it could get a surprisingly decent result with them but they're very unpredictable, and IMO I think Spain and France have a much higher chance of finishing last so we shouldn't have to worry about that.

Posted by: Liаm Feb 27 2020, 12:49 PM

France is surely last, so it's only up from last year, I do think the juries might really like it but you can never say that for sure. Every year there's a totally random pick like Nobody But You or Proud that they just pile on for some reason that you wouldn't cal, maybe one year it can be our turn for that laugh.gif

Posted by: LexC Feb 27 2020, 12:59 PM

I really worry that this is going to be the “accidental last” and all the good elements of what progress we’ve made is going to take us back to square one.

It’s the problem with literally all of the last ten entries we’ve sent, they may have been perfectly serviceable radio songs but none of them have been strong enough to crack that ceiling of the top few songs out of a lineup of 26 that people rally behind. So this could do something with the juries where you can accrue scores from being ranked relatively high by lots of people but I don’t see this reaching double figures in the tele-vote - we’ll get the usual pity points from Ireland and Australia but not much more.

So yeah those are my #GenuineConcerns

Posted by: troylovesmusic Feb 27 2020, 01:11 PM

It’s a nice ok song buts it’s not gonna stand out at Eurovision imo .

Posted by: Liаm Feb 27 2020, 01:12 PM

I love that our expectations are so low for us that "we could do a Benjamin Ingrosso and be saved by the juries despite getting f*** all televote" is actually me being hopeful laugh.gif Of course we won't come top 10 like that.

Are you joking? Exactly which of the past 10 years entries were "serviceable" radio songs?? Englebert? Electro Velvet?? Which radio station have you heard them on? Nulpoints FM? If you think that, you in total denial about the quality of our entries. Sighs... a mid tempo ballad that does zero for me... where's the fun? where's the pop tune? where's the gimmicks? I'm sure James is good at what he does, but this is not a memorable song on first listen for me... Yes it's not an embarrassment, but it's not a winner either.

When did we stop wanting to win? When did we last throw everything at it to enter a bloody brilliant pop song? I don't want progress. I want a classic Eurovision winner!

As much as if I want to like it, it just feels underwhelming, the track does not go anywhere, really lost faith in our British selection for a long while now. And an artist who I hardly know apart from related to John Newman. I can easily see this in the bottom 10 in the final. The French selection is hideous, enough said.

Posted by: diva thin muffin Feb 28 2020, 04:58 PM

I like this song but I'm kind of underwhelmed by the "one last ............ breath!" part. It needs just a little bit more of a kick. Are internally selected songs every given revamps? At least with the ElectroVelvet one they took a bit of a risk, rather than going for something safe sounding, fair enough it didn't work out well in terms of scoring.

Posted by: LexC Feb 28 2020, 05:57 PM

The deadline being in eight days suggests that this is very likely the final version (as is any and all internal selections revealed in the next week).

Posted by: Chez Wombat Feb 28 2020, 06:34 PM

This isn't too bad, has a strong chorus and it's nice they got someone with actual industry experience than some nobody. Sadly, I'm not sure I can see it properly standing out on the night and it could very well easily slip to a mid-to low 20s position. I'm not sure how BBC haven't grasped yet that this X Factor debut, radio-friendly, mid-tempo sound isn't the standout we need to break out of the bottom 5.

Posted by: AdamAloud Feb 28 2020, 07:20 PM

It's our best entry since Molly quite easily and I think a similar result is likely. Not a televote grabber but will hopefully bank a decent jury score. I read on Twitter (?) that BMG want to be involved with Eurovision for a few years and mentioned how The Netherlands overhauled their Eurovision fortunes, so hopefully that plan doesn't go out the window if this underperforms.

Posted by: Bré Mar 5 2020, 08:28 PM

This song sounds like a somewhat more... competent? entry than the usual from us. It's not really massively my thing but it seems like the kind of song that could actually be a moderate hit in the UK which hasn't been true of like any of our entries for the last decade. A step in the right direction, maybe the juries might like it xx

It just has nothing about it does it? Has he lowered the key for the live performance too? There are no notes to put much effort in for. This is going to stand out zero amounts, will we even get a point from televotes? Will juries like this over the others? Think our saving grace is a poor field to pitch against but I still think we are in for a bottom 5 finish if not last.

I tend to agree with this. It's not a ballad, nor is it a dance track. Pretty sure no one will care about it. Well, maybe 1 point from Ireland. Last place here we ago again Britain.
If only Adele could do the UK this favour someday. angel.gif Her name alone would guarantee a top 5 place.

That 'performance' was one of the most lack lustre things I've ever seen, no personality, vocals worst than the recording and phoning it in completely. The recorded version is at least decent but that was bad. If they do it like that on the night we're coming last again.

Posted by: Liаm Mar 15 2020, 11:23 AM

If he comes out and performs it like that, I wouldn't be surprised with single digit points on the night. The new split of jury and televote makes it hard to get 0 but I think they could even do a Sisters or Manel Navarro and get 0 on one or the metrics laugh.gif
