 So the Oscars were only a week ago but it's time to start getting the hype rolling for possible awards contenders next year. Of course, there will be surprises that come along before then such as Hacksaw Ridge, Hidden Figures and Hell or High Water from this year but the likes of La La Land, Manchester by the Sea and Arrival were all floating around in discussions this time last year! I also think this year seems to be the return of Michelle Pfeiffer and supporting actress seems her best shot for a win with either Mother! or Murder On the Orient Express (she's getting great reviews for Where Is Kyra? too). Kirsten Dunst also seems to be going all out this year and perhaps could do what Alicia Vikander could not and get nominations in both actress categories for The Beguiled and Woodshock. |

Looks as though Spielberg's film this year could be The Post (about the Washington Post's role in revealing the Pentagon Papers) with Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks rather than the Edgardo Mortara film which seems to be pushed back. Surely they should both be locks for nominations but Tom Hanks does seem to be have been snubbed a fair few times in recent years (Captain Phillips, Bridge of Spies, Sully, Saving Mr Banks etc).

Nothing would make me happier. Kirsten is one of Hollywood's most underrated actresses, her role in Melencholia deserved a nomination (even a win) and she's just been amazing in everything. Her role on Fargo was also world class last year, and Gaga beating her to the Golden Globe was a very odd moment. I would feel genuinely emotional if Kirsten managed even a nomination at some point. |

How amazing would a Meryl Streep vs Rooney Mara vs Jessica Chastain vs Saoirse Ronan vs Judi Dench Best Actress category be?!?
Or Tom Hanks vs Hugh Jackman vs Gary Oldman vs Daniel Day-Lewis vs Matt Damon ?!? Or Kristen Wiig vs Michelle Williams vs Julianne Moore vs Naomi Watts vs Michelle Pfeiffer ?!? I know that some of these are going to end up terrible and there will be shock indie frontrunners come the time of awards season but you can't not look at the lists above and just get RIDICULOUSLY excited for this year in film

'The Disaster Artist' (about Tommy Wiseau and the making of the film 'The Room') seems to be getting pretty good reviews coming out of SXSW. Perhaps, James Franco could be a dark horse to get a second nomination?

"Battle of the Sexes" has been given a US release date in September, doesn't bode well for its box office or Oscars chances (but of course, films have swept nominations with earlier release dates before). Saying that, it does star Emma Stone and Steve Carrell as well as having the directors of Little Miss Sunshine, the writer of Slumdog Millionaire & 127 Hours, the cinematographer of La La Land, and the composer from Moonlight!
Also, "Beauty and the Beast" has been screening to Oscar voters and been getting a good response apparently, perhaps Disney are hoping for a few nominations too! |

Yeah, I was thinking that other day that it could end up with four or five nominations which would be pretty fab (I think costume and make-up are quite likely as well as production design and visual effects perhaps too. I imagine it'll get one or two song nominations too which would be fab (I think "Evermore" is already a lock and maybe the Celine Dion song!). I wonder if it'll be eligible for score though as a lot of it is borrowed from the original, I know Arrival's score was disqualified last year for borrowing one song which many voters may not have known was not original which may have unfairly swayed the votes. Also, starting to think that Get Out could sneak an Original Screenplay nom a la The Lobster/Ex Machina! |

 Is it asking too much for Chris Evans to get some attention and glory for Gifted?  he's an underrated actor and that movie looks great.

Thank You For Your Service (starring Miles Teller & Amy Schumer) has received an awards contention release date at the end of October! Definitely a film I'm hyped for and I wonder if it could become an Oscar contender as the story definitely sounds like it has potential!
