Welcome to the Number 1 listening sessions thread for the 1990s and beyond! To mark 70 years of the UK singles charts, a group of us have been listening to every Number 1 hit ever. We started with Al Martino's "Here In My Heart" from 1952 back in January, and have now reached Elton John's double A side from 1990, "Sacrifice" and "Healing Hands". The sessions run from 4pm to 7pm on Sundays, and today we will be covering the 1990 to 1992 period. As we are now in more familiar territory for most I thought some of you who have not joined before may wish to drop in. Feel free to only join for part of the session, or pop in and out as you wish! You can join anonymously if you wish, or re-name yourself with your real or Buzzjack username and join the conversation. We use Synctube for the sessions, and I will post the link here in the hour before the session. We play the Youtube video for each song and have a good old chat about the good, the bad and the ridiculous. Each session we will make nominations from the period for our worst Number 1 ever shortlist, which we have been discussing in the Pre 2000s forum. The group will also nominate a couple of favourite #2 hits from the time to be crowned as honorary Number 1s and played at the end of the session. Hope to "see" you there! |

Thanks all for a great session last Sunday - and I forgot to mention but particular thanks to Ed for posting the chart runs!
This coming Sunday we will start with “Ebenezer Goode” in 1992 and, I estimate, finish around January 1995. That should leave time for up to 3 Number 2 hits to be crowned honorary #1s. So we can have a think about our nominations in advance here is a list of all the Number 2s from the period, and it includes some real corkers! Undercover - Baker Street 1992 Dr Alban - It's My Life 1992 Arrested Development - People Everyday 1992 Michael Jackson - Heal The World 1992 Snap feat. Niki Harris - Exterminate 1993 Take That - Why Can't I Wake Up With You 1993 Michael Jackson - Give In To Me 1993 Snow - Informer 1993 Janet Jackson - That's The Way Love Goes 1993 Haddaway - What Is Love 1993 4 Non Blondes - What's Up 1993 Urban Cookie Collective - The Key The Secret 1993 Bitty McLean - It Keep Rainin' (Tears From Eyes) 1993 Pet Shop Boys - Go West 1993 M People - Moving On Up 1993 Cappella - U Got 2 Let The Music 1993 Bryan Adams - Please Forgive Me 1993 Elton John & Kiki Dee - True Love 1993 Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart & Sting - All For Love 1994 Toni Braxton - Breathe Again 1994 Ace Of Base - The Sign 1994 Bruce Springsteen - Streets Of Philadelphia 1994 Crash Test Dummies - Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm 1994 Big Mountain - Baby I Love Your Way 1994 All-4-One - I Swear 1994 Let Loose - Crazy For You 1994 Red Dragon with Brian & Tony Gold - Compliments On Your Kiss 1994 Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me 1994 Corona - The Rhythm Of The Night 1994 Bon Jovi - Always 1994 (MC Sar &) The Real McCoy - Another Night 1994 Stone Roses - Love Spreads This post has been edited by JulianT: 11th May 2022, 08:04 PM |

Streets Of Philadelphia is my favourite out of those. If we're going for "unlucky" #2s then I Swear has to be in consideration, while Informer and Always were 3-week #2s behind two different #1s each.

'Informer' is a must! (Urban Cookie Collective and Haddaway would complete my top 3 of that lot I think)

In all honesty there's definitely enough scope for #2 listening sessions at some point. 1995/96 surely has at least as many iconic #2s as #1s!

I'd be down for continuing these sessions with #2s as well, think there will be a lot more stuff I don't already know for that (and there already has been a lot of stuff I don't know from the #1s lol).
I've also been considering offering to host an equivalent of this for #1 albums (obviously only playing one song for each album otherwise it would never end x) at some point down the line if people would be interested, would throw up a bit more variety including artists who could never dream of getting #1 singles. |

Yes, would love a #2s session at some point if at all possible, 80s and 90s especially had some amazing ones (plus we'll all get to experience The Birdie Song together )
I'd be open to hear any of those but I think my top 3 would be What is Love, The Key The Secret and Go West. |

I’d go for -
Informer What Is Love Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Would definitely be up for #2 sessions and the the #1 albums idea sounds great. At Christmas what do people think of a smaller session where I go through the highest charting Christmas song of each year (obviously avoiding repeats) - 70 songs - so we could do it in a couple of weeks |

Great idea! OK narrowing it down to everything that’s had at least 3 mentions in the thread sounds like we’ll be choosing 3 of: Informer Streets of Philadelphia The Key, the Secret Go West Confide in Me What Is Love? |

An albums chart equivalent would be ambitious. That said, 1959 would be easy
