BuzzJack Music Forum _ Buzzjack Song Contest _ What would win BJSC Reloaded now?

Posted by: danG Sep 7 2016, 06:48 PM

If we were to say reload the rest of the Buzzjack Song Contests now, which songs do you think would win their respective contests?

Here's what won the first eight Re:Loaded's.

01 Delta Goodrem - Believe Again
02 The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony
03 The Veronicas - Hook Me Up
04 The Pipettes - Pull Shapes
05 M.I.A - Paper Planes

08 Kate Bush - This Woman's Work

-x-

My predictions/guesses (in the contest where I don't know much of the songs I've just gone for the winner or the obvious commercial hit):

14 The Veronicas - Untouched
15 Royksopp & Robyn - The Girl And The Robot
16 La Roux - Bulletproof
17 Chicane - Poppiholla {this is probably just the personal opinion talking here, I don't actually have a clue (the contest's actual winner doesn't sound like it'd win again)}

GAH, if only these results were true, I'd have had many more winners laugh.gif

Posted by: Iz~ Sep 7 2016, 11:10 PM

I really would like to think better of us than to go for the 'obvious commercial hit', that doesn't look like a winner improvement list in the slightest. Honestly you have to consider that plenty of people don't like pop hits, some of them in early BJSC are hardly the best... and loads of the underground hits are actually great songs, which is why the Reloaded thing started in the first place. I'm always anti-cheap stuff winning these because that was never the point of rerunning them and honestly seeing them do well each time, it is kind of killing the Reloadeds for me. sad.gif You can say they'd win if the contest was re-run under the same rules as normal contests right now and of course they would because they have an advantage in that everyone knows them already but that's... may I say... HARDLY THE POINT.

(if we were starting the reloaded project right now I'd honestly suggest excluding all songs everyone already knows (like top 10 hits) from the runs)

I'll just do up to XX right now because I've realised I've started writing a lot for these, you've triggered me, Dan:

IX - Alizee - Moi.. Lolita (between this and Margaret but I think this'd hit the crossover bases more and Imogen Heap and Kate Bush have proved that that can work)
X - The Knife - Heartbeats (Paparazzi could challenge but it's not the most loved Gaga song, Embrace could come close, I'm mostly disregarding Up because The Sats aren't doing so well on here lately but it could be in the mix, probably more likely than Paparazzi)
XI - Ladytron - Destroy Everything You You Touch
XII - La Roux - Quicksand (but Mowgli's Road will be around there - if I'm right that'd be the first repeat winner!!!!)
XIII - The Sound Of Arrows - MAGIC (yes, Release Me is a monster but its obviousness could work against it? also this looks a very competitive one with Lights and Little Boots et al, it can't be AS simple as Agnes storming it)
XIV - Nightwish - Amaranth (but like srsly can we leave this one, literally the only reason I want it rerun at some point is to get justice for Amaranth, because otherwise it was the PERFECT result with a (rather great) inspired song beating out a dirty horde of lazy songs and a rerun would just ruin that)
XV - Royksopp (but I'd be very interested to see how Jungle Drum does and I don't know many of the big hitters so they could spring a surprise)
XVI - Bulletproof (there is NO good option for this one that I can see so if it happens I'd just hope Blank does as well as possible, if this sounds like I'm a rampant Rontvia stan it's because I am, they were like the only nation that GOT it back then)
XVII - Beautiful Small Machines (yep, I think it would repeat! Mainly because there doesn't look to be any huge competition, and it still sounds good to this day even if it will rely on a tad of retro charm, it's like a proto-Aeroche winner. That Livvi Franc song could be a problem and 3rd and 4th are unknowns to me, this'd be a good one to rerun as there's very limited cheapness for an early contest)
XVIII - Loba (if anything cheap is going to win this it won't be Kesha, actually I'd put Cosmic Love and even Aly & AJ ahead of Tik Tok if ROTD is anything to go by, I can't see any lesser knowns that I know might have a chance but Electric Storm would be one to watch perhaps, isn't that one of Delta's best regarded album tracks, certainly one of my fave Delta songs)
XIX - Stay The Night (that's still loved a LOT and it's definitely Alcazar's most accessible song, and apparently this came 2nd when there was 'eurovision hate' from what I've heard? Mini Viva would put up a fight and maybe Katzenjammer too. Actually Ignorance and Uprising would be among the mix (even though I love them, it'd be because they're cheap) it was surely only BJSC's huge pop bias that saw those DNQ in the first place)
XX - Into The Clouds (I want to say Butterflies or Music Everywhere but they'd probably get comments of 'outdated pop', The Spell is hardly Alphabeat's strongest regarded either, meanwhile, Sound Of Arrows has aged well and like with Magic, it's the sort of pop that very few people around here dislike. There's a few in the top 10 I don't know, maybe that Zechonia song would get more of an audience today)

can someone say one of mine would win now? that'd be nice.

I agree. Maybe some challenge from tyDi, probably its biggest threat, and perhaps FAUL but honestly I think it's one of the more well regarded winners in that decade so I think it'd be fine. Certainly Animals I don't think is universally loved enough to win (and the same for FAUL although lesser) although it'd probably come top 5 now. Dark Star is a tricky one but I honestly think it might flop a bit more now.

Breaking YOUR heart? Poor brave Jay Dabhi. (He already won a rematch in TBO and all!)

I think Belanger would still win 57 as well, but Jaymes hopefully still top 3 along with Garrix?

That was always a very close contest so I would not be surprised at a different result on a rerun although probably too soon to say exactly what. But yes, BJSC butterflies are probably everywhere like that although that is one of the bigger ones, we could still have Aquafina participating then. Safe With You was always a bit of an iffy entry anyway, although less so than Sigala...

Oh you were pretty good for the times as far as I can see, and some people did do well at sourcing inspired stuff, I just notice Rontvia as most adept at pulling out hits from places I doubt would have been touched otherwise.

Posted by: danG Sep 11 2016, 07:48 PM

Speaking of Aquafina, does anyone think they'll eventually be allowed back in? It has been a year now (though I am aware they did receive a permaban) They had a run of great entries last year (and yes that includes the ever controversial Important)

Yasssss Iz <3

-----------

On another note these predicted results are, for the most part, not good. Everyone flocking towards the cheapest song in the contest was something that largely died out circa 2010, with the odd exception, and I'd personally absolutely hate if that had just continued through to now, in fact I'm sure the contest would have died a long time ago because nobody would have bothered sending anything inspired.

Sure I had no idea Hozier and Walk The Moon would go on to become hits of any sort, let alone million sellers, but I don't think they'd be any more deserving of winning now that everyone is suddenly familiar with them (and I don't think they would anyway as they've both been played to death and half of Buzzjack are sick of them, if they even liked them in the first place). And that goes for all the other tracks that have gone on to become UK hits, if this is how the Reloadeds are expected to pan out going forwards then it's probably a good time to draw a line under them now (then again, the last one was ages ago now...) or, as Iz says, remove all entries that were/have gone on to become UK hits.

Posted by: Cucumberella Sep 11 2016, 07:58 PM

i do think there are some 'cheap entries' that would go on to do really well and win and others that wouldn't - the ones that WOULD win would be the ones that exceeded expectations at the time of the contest (alex adair and walk the moon were growers in the contest in terms of hype and even the likes of karen harding that were nearly but not quite) so i think would really benefit - i mean if it was just 'the cheapest song in the contest' surely lorde would run away with 53???

Posted by: Cucumberella Sep 11 2016, 08:00 PM

i don't think it's a bad exercise to have the reloadeds because a lot of the songs would benefit from new demographics joining and with this recent alt-pop / rock shift that preceeds the previous heavy dance domination / indie domination we'd see a lot more benefit to those kind of tracks

I agree that they have worth, for sure, but it's always going to be the case that the more familiar hits end up doing better I guess. It's a nice way for people to discover entries they previously missed but it does seem a shame when original inspired winners end up filing in behind the songs that went on to smash, I sort of feel it takes away from their original achievements a little.

The other slightly odd thing that I know really only affects me for the time being (or Ashton/Eledan/Kylienips if they chose to participate) is that in one of the contests I was the only original country voting again, meaning that I can vote for 10 countries who aren't even participating but are not seeing any deductions for that. So my entries are always at an immediate disadvantage; by voting I'm essentially always shooting myself in the foot and I'd actually be better off by not taking part laugh.gif

Damn so if Ponibbi had won like he should have in 77 Lee would be posting 10 times more than he has this entire year

This was indeed an annoying consequence of the low number of originals voting, we did have discussions as to possibilities to combat it. I came up with a suggestion where for the originals that did vote, we'd work out the average amount of points per voter they got and then got that added again their score to make up for having one less vote.

One example I applied this to was for Land of Jack who voted in Re:LOADED III so received their 63 points from 14 possible voters working out at an average of 4.5 points per voter. Therefore if they had their full set of 15 voters (by adding that average score one extra time to take into account the one less voter), averages would suggest they'd have got 68 points instead of 63 points (rounded up) - giving them the win instead of finishing 2nd behind Mdice who didn't vote.

In the end it felt a bit too complicated and we looked for another solution but nothing quite fitted right at the time.

Regarding the desire to have some more Re:LOADEDs from some of you, the format we were using just wasn't creating enough interest. We could just pick out random contests (more recent ones) but I do think that the interest wouldn't pick up that much. Maybe we could pick out some random contests but have it a lot more casual, perhaps just posting votes publicly amongst a general discussion and then they can just be added up by someone like people do in the predictions threads for normal contests but not being like official reruns and added to the spin-off archive. Suggestions are of course very welcome!

Even if it did happen I don't think Lee cba to deal with Buzzjack these days let alone BJSC

looks like it was a conscious uncoupling

I think if we skip all the early contests and pick Reloaded back up at say, the start of 2012 (BJSC41) and run it without semi-finals (honestly I think ever since semi-finals were introduced into Reloaded interest has dropped) there may be some more interest.

BJSC41 for example only had 47 songs in it so that could be run as an OBF, or we could just have a casual nominations round for the DNQs and the top 10 get picked to join the original finalists for an OBF (#justiceforDanaelanda41).

Posted by: Iz~ Sep 19 2016, 04:01 PM

I wouldn't say completely skip the earlier ones, but maybe alternate between the eras. But I wouldn't say start as late as 41 either, I'd actually suggest going back a bit to 29 - first contest after the break and the 'last contest ever' of 28 (as a bonus, it'd be the first time XXIX would be run with people knowing who they're voting for). Plenty of recognisable country names among that lot and we start in the middle of the small 1BF era so less songs and no DNQs to bother with. I'd like to see my songs get involved in these but the mission is to get those undiscovered songs out there so skipping the early ones completely doesn't feel right. And starting later from 29 onwards the active participants start to come in much faster.

We could actually just run all of them 1BF if we run a 47-contest one as that, very few of those before 2012 hit 50 or more.

Maybe, if we just go for 9 now as a 1BF (i.e. after instrumentals is done) then a later one after that, it would give us time to properly figure out how to deal with people's votes sabotaging themselves.

Perhaps a public voting of some sort to choose the contest we want to revisit could be fair? We will neverrrrr be able to do all of them haha

Oh come on Pavel, you've been around long enough to know what an utter shitshow public votes in this forum turn out to be.

Speaking of Aquafina, does anyone think they'll eventually be allowed back in? It has been a year now (though I am aware they did receive a permaban) They had a run of great entries last year (and yes that includes the ever controversial Important)

Permanent hasn't changed meanings this past year has it?

It doesn't matter how 'great' their run of entries were, that has no bearing on things whatsoever.

Let's consider it Buzzjack's conscious uncoupling with Lee
