3rd March 1991
It's a brand new entry at 1 for Pet Shop Boys in a huge week for new entries and a huge week for oldies - if nothing else showing that my charts have had oldies in them right from day one - and consequently it's a very volatile chart as 1991 finally wakes up. Chris & Neil often loved to take pot-shots at the self-important rock scene and it's tendency to be overblown and pompous, so by way of boosting an otherwise fairly ordinary album track (How Can You... is good but it's not classic PSB) they decided to put U2 firmly in the line of fire by covering classic Joshua Tree track Where The Streets Have No Name, and then taking the campness to the nth extreme by mashing it up with Can't Take MY Eyes Off You, a Frankie Valli classic more recently a Boystown Gang dance monster. The video had glitter, cowboy hats, and their version was both brilliant and hilarious. Bono & co took note and turned all experimental. So, a result all round! It's also the longest single title in chart history. Probably. It's also their 8th chart-topper in a row and 13th in total, putting them amongst the All-Time Greats in my charts ahead of ELO, and behind Abba and The Beatles. Colin Blunstone, ex-Zombies singer, covers his own 1972 chart-topper, Denny Laine's Say You Don't Mind - Denny having topped my charts with Wings many times - and enters at 4. I love the lush orchestral ballad, and it deserves to be better known. In at 6, Joan Armatrading out-peaks her 1976 original chart-peak with Love And Affection in remixed form (and has just been back in my 2021 charts for a 3rd run), as The Bee Gees get another top 10, extending their run back to my debut chart in 1968, and Roxette keep the more-recent run of top 10's going strong with Joyride. The second-biggest new track of the week, and a bonafide classic, is Massive (as they were briefly known due to an ongoing war) Attack's show-stopping song and video, Unfinished Sympathy, not least made extra great thanks to Shara Nelson's vocal, in at 14 just one spot higher than a re-issued Love Is A Stranger out to sell a Hits compilation as Eurythmics sadly split up for quite a while, and it's 3rd run in my chart. At 17, it's another oldie, as Elton John's 1974 hit Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me is also re-issued on CD - and I decide I rather do like it having been less than enthusiastic first-time round as it flopped in my charts then. Don't worry, I'd soon go off it again after the duet with George Michael topped the UK charts. Others: Happy Mondays have a Loose Fit, Echo & The Bunnymen are back thinking People Are Strange, a cover of the dark 50's ballad that had been out before, Wendy & Lisa return, and Scritti Politti re-enter after dropping out for a week, with their Beatles cover. I make that close-on one-third of the chart being either old, remixed, covered, nicked or sampled. 1 ( NEW ) WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME - CAN’T TAKE MY EYES OFF YOU/HOW CAN YOU EXPECT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY? Thanks Steve, There'll be another new number one shortly KLF are The Act of 1991 for me, even considering Pet Shop Boys and my inbuilt biases. Actually I might do 60 years of Best Act Of 1960 onwards (if I count the womb months ) based on what was released each year and see if Pet Shop Boys grab every year they have a new album out. Or not. It would be something I would enjoy reading! |

It would be something I would enjoy reading! Okey doke, will get round to a more in depth than the one i just started, but thought I'd start off with the 60's, as it's pretty easy for me, and it might be more fun if others do their picks too for later decades (or also the 60's if they fancy it) |

It's 2 weeks on top for Pet Shop Boys' U2/Frankie Valli mash-up, as Colin Blunstone peaks one place lower than Say You Don't Mind did in 1972 and Roxette grab a 5th top 5. Rod The Mod gets his biggest track since 1984 as Rhythm Of My Heart pounds from 53 to 6 beats, and Definition Of Sound leap up to 7 from 36. Elton's 1974 oldie goes top 10 for the first time, and Massive Attack take a classic into the top 10. Happy Mondays have a Loose Fit slacking into the 20, The Source give beats to Candi Staton and a first top 20 for her in 14 years with You Got The Love. Biggest climber outside Rod Stewart is Scritti Politti's Beatles cover, and the highest new entry is from REM, with Losing My Religion arguably being their greatest single, and new in at 25. Aswad cover The Eagles in the usual laidback reggae vibe, although amusingly Google seems to think it's the Earth, Wind & Fire song of the same name, oops, wrong, new at 42. The Mock Turtles great one-off Britpop classic Can You Dig It? is new at 43, Madonna's Rescue Me is new at 45, plugging the hits remixes album, and a blessed relief after Hanky Panky, though Justify My Love was fine, albeit not one you could dance to. Womack & Womack make it 7 years of chart entries, George Michael gets another low-key album track into a minor hit single, as Cowboys & Angels enters at 65, Elaine Paige almost goes for a rockin' pop track, Well, Almost, and in bottom run it's an obscure record from Nik Kershaw, donated to The Tremeloes' Chip Hawkes song, Chesney. The One And Only is a good pop record, I wonder whether it'll drop out next week.... 1 ( 1 ) WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME - CAN’T TAKE MY EYES OFF YOU/HOW CAN YOU EXPECT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY? Some fantastic tracks rising here and two of the greats songs of all time imho from Massive Attack and The Source ❤️. Also didn’t realise Sritti Politti still released new material as late as 1991, always viewed him as a mid 80s artist. Was that the rerelease for ‘People Are Strange’ by Echo & the Bunnymen?

Yes I agree about Massive Attack and The Source (albeit it the 1997 version for me), yes Green Gartside was still having hits in the 90's, and had one more album in the late 90's, but he'd been burnt-out and developed a phobia over playing live, so effectively retired for a quiet life and occasional radio presenting, and the odd single. Latest news is he's supporting OMD on their next tour so I will be very tempted, if it all goes ahead! OMD are fab in concert, always a great night out, and I'd love to see Scritti Politti doing all the great hits! People Are Strange was a 1987 Lost Boys track, presumably pushed again in 1991 for The Doors movie coming out and Light My Fire finally making the UK top 10 24 years late |

It's 3 weeks on top as Rod Stewart gets his first top 3 track since Infatuation peaked at 2 in 1984, and his last as it happens, barring oldies coming back to top the chart. That sadly keeps off Massive Attack from the runners-up spot in a very varied top 10, joined this week by Happy Mondays biggest track to date, Loose Fit at 6. REM's classic Losing My Religion goes top 20, and George Michael's gorgeously sad Cowboys And Angels shoots up 47 places to give every single off Listen Without Prejudice a top 20 spot. Highest new entry is a track off Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation album, State Of The World in at 21, as other album tracks join it as per my new chart rules allowing one current album track not out as single to chart for a few weeks (5 or 10, I think): Carpenters Good Old Days in at 33 with a track I didn't know but had taken my fancy, and Dusty Springfield's Pet Shop Boys' track Occupy Your Mind at 39. Marc Almond re-records the brilliant Soft Cell hit from 1982, Say Hello Wave Goodbye, which featured a faltering but heartrending vocal from Marc which he clearly wasn't happy with. The new version might have been technically sung better but it had nowhere near the emotion of the original. In at 29. INXS' big ballad, By Your Side, shuffles in at 50, Queen have the seemingly whimsical I'm Going Slightly Mad new in, but the video with Freddie plastered in make-up and being game for a laugh was, I found, very sad and disturbing as he looked so ill and thin. Feargal Sharkey makes it 3 decades (or 13 years, take your pick) of chart entries as I've Got News For You takes up bottom-rung, co-written this time by himself. 1 ( 1 ) WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME - CAN’T TAKE MY EYES OFF YOU/HOW CAN YOU EXPECT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY? It’s not until I follow these charts that I realise there’s so much good stuff in the early 90s. Just assumed the 90s don’t start properly until 1994!

^at any given era there's always good music,
lots of classics in there, Losing my Religion, Unfinished Sympathy, 3am Eternal, Wicked Game etc.. and also lots of "lost gems" like Banderas - This is the Life |

Thanks Steve & Bjork, I still see 1991 as a great period for music - and all the way up to 1997 or 1998 before dipping a bit, at least singles chart wise

It's a 4th and final week on top for Pet Shop Boys as Massive Attack's classic Unfinished Sympathy is at 2 - which is a nice surprise to me as I didn't recall it getting that high. As I've never reviewed my charts or re-played my cassette tapes of 1991 through 1994 this is all going to be new to me, yay! I also didn;t remember Loose Fit hitting 3 - what a cool top 3! Elton's 1974 flop (in my charts of the time) hits 4 some time ahead of the UK chart-topping duet with George Michael, who co-icidentally takes his lovely Cowboys & Angels into the top 10 for a 4th from 4 off the Listen Without Prejudice album. REM take a classic top 10, too, as Elaine Paige gets her 3rd biggest chart hit at 12 with the rocking-ish Well Almost - certainly not a ballad! The Carpenters get another belated top 20, and highest new entry is the 1976 Thin Lizzy Top 10 gem, The Boys Are Back In Town, in at 22 just ahead of the latest from Simple Minds, Let There Be Love at 25. At 49, Hazell Dean's still making chart hits 7 years on from her first Stock, Aitken & Watermen Hi-NRG hits, and Cher covers Linda Lewis' wonderful 1975 top 10 frantic disco biggie (for me), changes the title back from It's In His Kiss to The Shoop Shoop Song, adopted the style of a speeded-up Betty Everett version of the song from the 60's, bungs it in a film, and has a massive UK hit out of it. I'll stick with Linda Lewis and any previous Cher hits in the UK or the USA... At 67, not the Anita Ward song, Monie Love squares up against Adeva: winner? Adeva. At 73, Tom Jones sneaks in with a record I've no memory of at all. So expect it to drop out next week, as the main reason. But it does give The Voice a 23rd charting year, plus another 4 prior to that where he would definitely had had some monster hits in my theoretical charts as a kiddie, being as I absolutely loved It's Not Unusual, What's New Pussycat, Green Green Grass Of Home, Delilah and I'm Coming Home, 2 of those having topped my charts as re-issues. 1 ( 1 ) WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME - CAN’T TAKE MY EYES OFF YOU/HOW CAN YOU EXPECT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY? Losing my religion and Unfinished sympathy are my favourites in that top 10
I also really liked Cowboys and Angels, although I think at the time it was the first GM song to miss the top 40 |

I nearly love the whole top 10 to be honest, seems a great era!
