Chart Commentary

Another week, another change at the top. Oscar Enestad's I Love It falls to #2 for a second time, leaving room for Alexander Stewart to claim the #1 spot with Backwards. It's his second #1 out of three chart hits so far: Enamorado debuted at #4 in mid-2018, while Best Damn Thing hit the top last December. Backwards is the eighth new #1 of 2019, and all ten weeks of the year have had a different #1 to the previous week thus far (Matteo Markus Bok's Mrs Lonely spent two weeks at #1 - one in the final week of 2018, one in the first of 2019). Best Damn Thing only managed one week at #1, so if he were to break this run, Alexander would score his first multi-week #1.

Backwards is also my birthday #1 of 2019, ahead of Monday 11th March!

2012 Lucie Silvas - Reset
2013 Lucie Silvas - Happy
2014 Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX - Fancy
2015 Conor Maynard - Talking About
2016 Frans - If I Were Sorry
2017 FO&O - Gotta Thing About You
2018 Why Don't We - Trust Fund Baby
2019 Alexander Stewart - Backwards

Alexander Stewart
2018 04 Enamorado | 1 | 4-11-23-34-x (4 weeks)
2018 01 Best Damn Thing | 2 | 1-3-4-7-15-19-27-32-x (8 weeks)
2019 01 Backwards | 3 | 1-... (1+ weeks)

Re-entering the chart at #3, Rita Ora's former #1 Only Want You makes a big comeback with the release of its single mix. Upon the release of parent album Phoenix, Only Want You became Rita's tenth #1, and sixth from Phoenix alone. Now it returns with added 6LACK credit. The rapper technically scores his first #1, though as of yet the single mix has yet to top my chart. It's 6LACK's first hit full stop, and the third by an artist whose name begins with a number (following 5 Seconds of Summer's Want You Back and 2 Chainz's feature on Louisa's YES, both last year).

Also new in this week's top 5 is the big name collaboration between benny blanco, Tainy, Selena Gomez and J Balvin. For the first two artists, it's their first top 10 hit - benny blanco's only prior hit was Eastside, which I cruelly only charted at #40, while Tainy has never charted before. Selena however is a top 10 veteran, scoring her fourteenth top 10, with only two non-top 10 features interrupting a run of thirteen consecutive top 10s. J Balvin meanwhile scores his third top 10, following collaborations with Cardi B and David Guetta.

benny blanco
2018 40 Eastside (benny blanco, Halsey & Khalid) | 1 | 40-x (1 week)

The final new song in this week's top 10 comes from Emma Bunton, who interestingly scores her first top 10, and first hit overall, with new song Baby Please Don't Stop. I love most of Emma's singles, so that's quite a deceiving stat - of course, all of them were released a considerable period of time before my chart began in the second last week of 2011. It's only the second Spice-related top 10, following Mel B's #7 hit For Once In My Life in 2013.

Also making their chart debuts this week are the Jonas Brothers (!), Eliot (of Belgium Eurovision 2019 fame) and Travis Barker, while AJ Mitchell and Miki Núñez score new personal bests.

Hallo Joseph!
Nice to see "Only Want You" re-enter, I knew that after "Let You Love Me" this would be her next single.
I also like the debut for "Sucker", I found the Jonas Brothers decent in their earlier years and now they're back together and better than ever before in my opinion!
Great chart!

Hey Joseph!

Great to see 'Only Want You' re-enter so high. I really want it to be another big hit for her but somehow I can't really see it happening. Similarly to the Little Mix situation, she should have released it in January while she was fresher on people's minds with the album release.

That Emma Bunton song is a bit of a tune really, as has been most of her previous discography tbh. I'm surprised she's releasing her album so soon before the Spice Girls tour though (for which I have a ticket!)

New Jonas Brothers is surprisingly good, I've never been massively fussed on any of their songs before so this will quite easily become my favourite by them.

I really can't get into 'Flux' so I'm not surprised it's struggling. I'm not even sure R1 are going to playlist it so I reckon they'll probably treat it a a buzz single and then move on to something more commercial sounding.

Great chart as usual smile.gif
