probably won't be like that until X Factor stops unfortunately, when we'll get some "normal" songs going to Christmas #1 like Happy/Uptown Funk would've done, but also with the occasional charity record going all the way

Wow underwhelming Mr Blobby sales. The Christmas No1 sales since the turn of the century have been massive considering the troubles with sales.

Posted by: soundseekerz Dec 21 2014, 09:53 PM

It seems to be the first year both number 1 single and album sell the same amount of copies blink.gif

Posted by: danny boy Dec 21 2014, 11:03 PM

2006 Take That Beautiful World 443,070 amazing, in a week, seems impossible now.

Ben Haenow's song is 3,000 copies behind Whitney Houston's Xmas #1. She had an impressive first week sales considering sales in 1992's singles chart were absolutely poor

Posted by: steve201 Dec 21 2014, 11:37 PM

Wow 1996 saw Spice Girls selling 870k odd albums &
Singles, that's just unreal. Robbie/Take That dominates the 21st century!!

It was one of those years when the Christmas fell on a Saturday, so the Christmas #1 was revealed 6 days before the actual day. Mr Blobby actually sold more copies the following week lol.

That was Whitney's fourth week at #1, not her first. The first Christmas #1 to enter at #1 was "2 Become 1".

Mr Blobby's sales for the Christmas chart in 1993 suffered to an extent because the Christmas chart was based on sales from 12 to 18 December (chart dated 25 December). The following week (chart dated 1 January 1994) the chart was based on the sales week in the run up to Christmas (19 to 25 December) and the single recorded a sales increase of over 50% with sales of around 140,000.

Spectacular sales in 1996 for the Spice Girls! wub.gif They ended 1996 with over 2.8m singles sales, and almost 1.8m album sales (at the time I think 'Spice' was reported to have sold over 2m by the time 2 Become 1 came out, but it seems its figure was eventually revised down slightly). Anyway, over 4 and a half million records sold in their first 6 months alone. heart.gif

Interestingly, if Mark Ronson had been up against last year's x factor winner and she had sold the same amount then he would have been no1 for Christmas. what a shame!! Also, x factor haven't dominated the albums Christmas chart in the same way as the singles....

Sadly I can't see Cowell stopping X Factor anytime soon, maybe another 4/5 years maybe but I think it needs to be rested for a year at least though I'd rather it just disappeared forever!!

Unless Simon decides to shift it 3 months early, I read somewhere that he is planning to shake the format next year, whatever that entails we have to wait and see.

Ah yeh I actually forgot about that.Knew Mr Blobby sold quite a bit overall. Suppose it was 93, just before the norm became held back releases.

whilst I think the show ran tiring years ago to move it a month or two early would be a great idea. I really don't want XF hogging the Christmas #1 all the time (except the 3 years they missed it). Would be pretty cool to see something non charity on top too.

Or have the final a week before the race for Xmas no. 1 starts like in 2011 and 2012

Posted by: MyKindOfLove Dec 22 2014, 01:18 PM

X-Factor needs moving to January or someone could make a false story about the winner and start a blacklash? I know the latter is highly immoral and wrong, but it's one way. Just destory the winner in the press.

Indeed a Summer version starting in June would be great boosting sales and songs up the chart in a quieter period but less people watch TV during the long warm summer nights and they wouldnt want a fall in audience. It would also leave the way open for artists to release on xmas week too.

Hope the Voice boosts sales in Jan/Feb too when it starts in the new year!

Alot of people say this is what happened to Joe in 2009 when he was pictured throwing a dart at a dart board with Rage on it on the friday of christmas. It was great as it simply boasted the campaign and the chart!!

Posted by: ThePensmith Dec 22 2014, 04:33 PM

I still remember feeling highly triumphant when Bob the Builder beat Westlife back in 2000. A supposed 'novelty' song or not 'Can We Fix It' always sounded like it could make sense as a pop song. It has a better chorus than 99.9% of Westlife's actual #1s from that period of their career anyway.

Actually there was a bit of an internet campaign in 2003 as well but in the pre-social networking days it probably didn't make any difference. And of course the Number One that year did come from a film.

Good grief, is this really what people's thoughts have come to? laugh.gif It's quite silly really. Who cares if the X Factor get the Xmas #1 most years? It's no big deal surely.

Plus I can't see X Factor ending any time soon, ratings may be lower than they used to be but they're still excellent ratings and it's one of ITV's biggest shows, they'd be stupid to not renew the contract.

Do people REALLY care this much about music charts? To ruin someone's career and reputation more or less straight away just so we get a "proper" Christmas #1?! Jesus.

Posted by: JosephCarey Dec 22 2014, 05:39 PM

What the Xmas #1 is doesn't even bother me lmao, it's just any old week really. But then, you always get the same old X Factor haters complaining.

I've just been re-reading my Chart Commentary from five years ago. Here is an extract...

QUOTE
Regular readers will know that I am no fan of Simon Cowell or X-Factor. Anyone who is a big fan of the show may wish to skip the next couple paragraphs. This year’s choice of song for the X-factor winner to perform is The Climb, originally a hit for Miley Cyrus earlier this year. I didn’t like the Cyrus version so I wasn’t expecting to like this version and I don’t. In fact, it’s probably even worse than I expected. It’s a typical XF winning song, so brilliantly pastiched by Peter Kay last year. Take a slushy ballad. Get some singer - it doesn’t matter where they’re from, South Shields will do - to sing in a faux-American accent. Add a key change somewhere and a choir. It’s all there.

By having themed nights for the finalists, the programme is more likely to be won by someone who is moderately competent at a number of different musical genres rather than by someone who is outstanding in some genres but hopeless in others. That is compounded by the fact that the winner’s song is chosen in advance. Judging by this, Joe McElderry has probably got a decent voice but this song just doesn’t suit him. Even though it would mean the single couldn’t be released as soon as the winner is announced, wouldn’t it be better to choose a song - either one specifically written for them or, if they must, yet another cover - after it is known who will record it? If they are hell-bent on releasing the single immediately why not have each of the final two or three contenders sing a different song - the one that they will release as a single if they win? At least then there might be a better match of winner and song. Clearly a lot of people agree. Hence the phenomenal success of this campaign.

At least there is no longer a single winner's song regardless of who wins but some of my other comments still apply.

I've got the Music Week chart report for that week. The albums sales were (with rounded figures which was usually all Alan Jones quoted back then):

December 26, 1998

1. Ladies And Gentlemen - George Michael 309,000
2. I've Been Expecting You - Robbie Williams 178,000
3. Talk On Corners - The Corrs 156,000

5. Where We Belong - Boyzone 138,000
6. Step One - Steps 136,000

11. B*Witched - B*Witched 89,000

The top 37 artist albums all sold over 24,000 copies

Compilations:

1. Now 41 - 186,000
2. Hits 99 - 140,000

4. Chef Aid - The South Park Album 64,000

Total album sales for the week: 6,787,000

As another poster said they were No2 behind Mariah in 2011s Xmas airplay chart but they did make it to No1 in the week following Joe McElderry in 2009. I assume that year was a strange one when the Xmas no1 was early or something as the following week had the airplay top 10 full of Xmas classics.

Here's the full list of peak positions for the Pogues 2006 - 2014

2014 - 9 so far
2013 - 3
2012 - 3
2011 - 2 - full week build up 18-24/12
2010 - 19
2009 - 1 this must have been a strange week as Joe was no1 the week before then the pogues followed him
2008 - 3
2007 - 7
2006 - 17(18/12/06) Xmas week missing In BJ archives

I have most of them going back to sometime in 1997 in Music Week magazines, but other than that I've got the Airplay Charts book that was compiled by Lonnie Readioff, which has full chart runs of all the songs to make the Top 100 Airplay charts from November 1991 to August 2007.

I've got the Music Week chart report for that week. The albums sales were (with rounded figures which was usually all Alan Jones quoted back then):

December 26, 1998
1. Ladies And Gentlemen - George Michael 309,000
2. I've Been Expecting You - Robbie Williams 178,000
3. Talk On Corners - The Corrs 156,000

5. Where We Belong - Boyzone 138,000
6. Step One - Steps 136,000

11. B*Witched - B*Witched 89,000

The top 37 artist albums all sold over 24,000 copies
Compilations:

1. Now 41 - 186,000
2. Hits 99 - 140,000

4. Chef Aid - The South Park Album 64,000

Total album sales for the week: 6,787,000

Interesting to know...89k for #11! I remember they were sky high in 2005 as well because Kelly Clarkson was shifting 100k a week at the bottom of the top ten for a few weeks iirc.

I actually received Hits 99 for Xmas that year, I didn't get Now 41 until years later until I bought it for myself! Even though Now 41 was stronger overall Hits kicked off with Cher's Believe on Disc 1 and Corrs' So Young on Disc 2 so I can definitely see why I was bought that!

It was a bumper week for album sales in Christmas week 2005 - in total 10,581,571 albums were sold which I believe is the highest ever weekly figure, though Christmas week in 2000 and 2006 came close. The top 5 artist albums all sold over 200,000 with the top 16 selling over 100,000 and the top 98 all sold over 10,000.

I wonder why 2005 saw such incredible album sales being achieved? I seem to remember that albums were relatively expensive back then. Sugababes & Pussycat Dolls albums being reduced to £7.99 was quite a bargain for the time and saw both achieve huge sales increases in the Top 10 in early December. At the expense of Girls Aloud who sold nearly 82k to enter at #11. Their 2 CD version was retailed at £16.99. sad.gif

It was also to do with Christmas day being a Sunday so it had a full Christmas week to rack up the sales, economy booming etc biggrin.gif

Chef Aid was robbed of #1 in the compilation chart. Then again, Sony shouldn't have released it at the same time as NOW 41
