Hello and welcome to first of many artist profiles to hit the R&B and Urban Forum.

Every week we will provide you with one of the genre's biggest artists and open up any discussion you may have about them. If you randomly start loving a song or album and want to discuss it, there's exciting news or sales updates for the artist or you just want to express some love/hate for them, this is your place to do so. We will also archive the artists' threads so you can return to them whenever you wish.

Kick-starting it is one of my all-time favourite female artists: Janet Jackson. With one of the most impressive sales records in the US and worldwide she followed in her brother's footsteps wonderfully and really helped to shape and revolutionise the genre. Hits that span over 3 decades, i wonder if she can still go strong today...

Are you a fan, and if so any favourite songs/albums?? Is 'Together Again' the greatest song ever? This is All For janet.

Pretty much yes.

There's no one better for me in terms of dance routines - the late '80s videos are just iconic, masterful, stunning. 'Rhythm Nation', 'Black Cat', 'Miss You Much' and pretty much the entire Control album are just such perfect pop music. Obviously she was around at the same time as peak Madonna - to have been around when those two were female pop music must have been so thrilling.

Indeed. I had Janet a little growing up, but only properly got into her much later.

The run from 'Control' to 'The Velvet Rope' is wondrous. SO many highlights on such consistent albums.

Heck i've even been obsessing randomly over 'Call On Me' with Nelly this past week:

So smooth <3

Together Again was by far the winner of my recent(ish) Janet rate*, probably the highest average I've ever seen. Easily one of my faves from her too, I adore Nasty (probably her pinnacle for me), What Have You Done For Me Lately?, If, Black Cat, All For You and Feedback as well.

*unfinished due to my laptop dying on me during the results, sorry!

I was lucky enough to see her for free a few years ago at The Albert Hall. She was fantastic.

She ommitted my favourite songs (one of my only tbh) which is "Black Cat".

Sounds incredible. A family of true performers, to see any of them would be special.

'Black Cat' is fierce and raw too.

Over the last month or so I think I have become a little too obsessed. Janet was always an artist I had been meaning to check out properly (I mean I knew a good few of the singles) but had just never got round to doing so in a proper way, but with her being such a massive influence on the fantastic R&B artists today (Tinashe sampling 'Funny How Time Flies' anyone?) I thought it was about time I listened to all of her albums.

May I say it I was completely blown away. It is kind of overwhelming as there are so many highlights that it is hard to pin-point them when you get given them all at once. Working my way through her albums, in particular the run from 'Control' to 'The Velvet Rope', I kept on thinking surely there must be a drop in quality somewhere but no, it is all just incredible.

If I had to pick a career highlight I think I would have to say 'The Velvet Rope' era. It is just such a masterpiece and I love love love the neo-soul influences in there. That title track does things to me. I love how throughout her career she switched from flawless pop to sensual R&B and trip-hop so easily.

Now forever stanning for her versatility. So sad it took me so long to get so properly on board.
