After nine weeks at #1, Drake is finally dethroned by Blink-182, who earn their second #1 album and their first since Take Off Your Pants And Jacket in 2001, so 15 years ago. Further down, Grace debuts higher than Snoop Dogg (Snoop Lion is no longer a thing?) but not as high as Desiigner, who nonetheless misses the top 20. In fairness it's just a mixtape and it only had 2.5K in proper sales. American Authors follow up a #15 album with a new one at #60, and even worse, Magic! follow up a #6 album with their new one at #124.

The numbers after each album title are: Total units, % change, last week's units (if any), sales, track-equivalent units and stream-equivalent units.

Blink-182 Bumps Drake From No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
7/10/2016 by Keith Caulfield

After nine weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, Drake’s Views is dethroned from the top slot by Blink-182’s new set, California. The latter debuts at No. 1 with 186,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending July 7, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 172,000 were in traditional album sales -- the third-largest sales week for a rock album in 2016.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new July 16-dated chart (where California is No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, July 12.

California is Blink-182’s second No. 1 album, following 2001’s Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, which spent one week at No. 1 on the June 30, 2001-dated list. The act has racked up a total of seven top 10 sets, dating back to 1999’s Enema of the State, which peaked at No. 9.

The new album is the group’s first without its co-founder, singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge, who departed the act in 2015. Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba has since stepped in for DeLonge.

The new album was led by the single “Bored to Death,” which hit No. 1 on the Alternative Songs chart dated July 9, marking the act’s first No. 1 on the list since 2004.

California’s sales launch of 172,000 copies sold is also the band’s biggest sales week since 2003, when its self-titled album bowed at No. 3 with 313,000 sold. Between that album and the new release, the group issued three albums, all of which saw their best sales week in their debut frame. Greatest Hits bowed in 2005 with 72,000 sold, the full-length studio effort Neighborhoods debuted in 2011 with 151,000 sold, and the EP Dogs Eating Dogs started with 57,000 in 2013.

As mentioned earlier, California’s sales of 172,000 is the third-largest for a rock album in 2016. The only sets to post larger sales weeks were the debuts of Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool (173,000) and David Bowie’s Blackstar (174,000).

It has been 15 years and 17 days since Blink-182 was last at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, which is the longest gap between No. 1 albums for an act since 2012. That year, Lionel Richie returned to No. 1 after 25 years, six months and 25 days, when his Tuskegee set rose to the top on the list dated April 28, 2012. It was his first No. 1 since Dancing on the Ceiling spent its second and final week atop the chart, way back on Oct. 4, 1986.

Blink-182’s gap between No. 1s is the longest for a rock act since AC/DC waited 26 years and 10 months between For Those About to Rock We Salute You in 1982 and Black Ice in 2008. For Those’s third and final week at No. 1 was on Jan. 9, 1982 while Black Ice’s first of two frames in the penthouse was on Nov. 8, 2008.

In the runner-up slot on the new Billboard 200, Drake’s Views slips from No. 1 to No. 2 with 117,000 units (up 6 percent). The album spent its first nine weeks atop the list -- the third-most weeks at No. 1 for a hip-hop album in the chart’s history. Ahead of Views are Vanilla Ice’s To the Extreme (16 weeks at No. 1 in 1990 and 1991) and M.C. Hammer’s Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em (21 weeks in 1990).

Maxwell’s new blackSUMMERS’night arrives at No. 3 with 59,000 units (57,000 in pure album sales). It’s the follow-up to the 2009 album BLACKsummers’night, which debuted at No. 1 with 316,000 copies sold. Before that, he released the 2001 album Now, which launched at No. 1 with 296,000.

In total, Maxwell has claimed four top 10 albums, as he also visited the region with 1998’s No. 3-peaking Embrya. (His first two charting albums missed the top 10. His debut effort Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite topped out at No. 37, but spent a lengthy 78 weeks on the list. His second charting album, 1997’s MTV Unplugged EP, reached No. 53.)

The new album’s first single, “Lake by the Ocean,” has so far peaked at No. 50 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Comparably, BLACKsummers’night’s lead track, “Pretty Wings,” was in the top five of the chart the week that album debuted at No. 1. The song later spent 14 weeks atop the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

The story is a bit different on the Adult R&B Songs airplay chart, where “Lake by the Ocean” has spent five weeks at No. 1. “Pretty Wings” also led the list -- and was tops the week its parent album hit the charts. The track spent a total of 12 weeks at No. 1. (The Adult R&B Songs chart ranks the most played tunes each week on a panel of adult R&B radio stations.)

Beyonce’s Lemonade falls 2-4 on the Billboard 200 with 39,000 units (down 18 percent), Twenty One Pilots’ Blurryface dips 4-5 with 38,000 (up less than 1 percent) and Rihanna’s Anti descends 5-6 with 36,000 (down 3 percent).

Adele’s 25 holds at No. 7 with just over 32,000 units (down 3 percent), the original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton falls 6-8 with 32,000 (down 11 percent) and the Epic AF compilation moves 8-9 with 28,000 units (down 1 percent).

Blake Shelton’s If I’m Honest rounds out the top 10, as it steps 15-10 with 27,000 units (up 41 percent). The album is up 52 percent in sales (to 21,000), 23 percent in TEA (to 4,000 units) and less than 1 percent in SEA (to a little more than 2,000 units). The album was sale priced in the iTunes Store for $6.99 during the tracking week -- and Shelton’s Twitter and Facebook accounts both promoted the offer.
