Very excited for this but I think I prefer the older version of 'New Americana' but that's probably because I'm more used to it. Anyway, LOVE that and 'Hurricane' from her so I'm interested in what the rest of the album will sound like.
I'll be interested in this. 'New Americana' is fabulous and some of the other material is decent too. She is getting quite a big internet hiipe in some other places i've looked so hopefully this delivers!
I will 100% be getting this, I'm completely obsessed with Room 93 so I have high expectations for this, I'm sure Halsey won't disappoint though
Enjoyed Halsey for quite some time now. Very hyped for this.
Halsey released another song from Badlands today! It's amazing, I am so excited for this album *.*
It's not on YouTube yet but it's on https://open.spotify.com/track/1w1CA8KKAhmIwtWFXPhHOn
I have loved every single song off BADLANDS so far so have extremely high hopes for the whole album i have ordered the autographed box set
Just finished listening to this, absolutely flawless
This is one of the many things on mah listening list. Looking forward to listening to it as I have loved every song I've heard from her so far.
Been listening to this pretty much all day it's freaking fabulous, 100% my album of the year
Just listened to the deluxe and it was a fabulous first listen. It's an excellent debut with a lot of interesting production on there. I particularly love 'Castle' and the use of the choir in there. 'Colours' and 'Haunting' were two other initial non-single favourites!
It does get a bit samey towards last couple or so tracks but I'll definitely be coming back to the album a lot!
The production on the album is lush 'Colours' is my personal favorite, it's very atmospheric and the chorus reminds me a lot of 'Style'
I got the deluxe too and I think there's a pretty good album hidden in there somewhere. I'll listen to it a few more times and cull a few tracks as it goes on a bit too long for me.
I like her stylings though, definite potential here.
Colours is also my favourite but I don't think there's a song I don't adore on this, on my first listen I thought Roman Holiday was very generic and didn't have anything all that special to it but the more I hear it the more I love it. I got really excited when I saw there was a part ii to colours but then after I heard it I was a bit disappointed as it's basically just a remix of the main song, the outro to control is so stunning though
I LOVE this as expected
'New Americana' is sublime. Fantastic album on a first listen!
I will listen to this for the first time as soon as I get time, hopefully later today (currently listening to Worldvision). She's one of my favourite discoveries off plug <3 I'll probably listen to the EP first though.
There's nothing as amazing as New Americana but this is such a strong album, didn't expect to like it as much as I do
Nice production on some of these but the songs rarely went anywhere for me.
I am absolutely in awe of this album
Yeah the production is 'nice', but for me it's yet another faceless pop singer drowned out by over the top synthetic sounds. Not terrible by any means but just not for me really, a bit like Lana Del Rey's new stuff just completely boring and not compelling me to listen again sadly.
I was gonna listen to this for the first time like now, but can't because obsessed with 'Room 93' currently (hadn't listened to it in full before today). Basically, Halsey's stopping me from listening to her own album.
Room 93
I do prefer the BADLANDS version of Ghost in comparison to the EP version though, not that there's much difference though
Taken from Halseys twitter. So pleased for her- I am still LOVING this album and have pretty much been playing it on repeat
This is amazing, so deserved! 2016 is gonna be her year, she's already making a name for herself now, just think about where she will be in a years time
Wow, that's amazing! I wasn't expecting that at all
I'm determined to get my shit together and finally listen to this today.
Edit: It's also #3 here in Ireland
Yes Matt, very much awaiting your opinions
I listened to the Deluxe Edition tonight. I'll listen to the regular too soon, there might be some differences in the songs. I know the track order is different, as well as the bonus tracks in the Deluxe of course.
I like how wonderfully dark it is in places. 'Roman Holiday' is the one that most stood out to me from first listen out of the ones I didn't already know, and I've been listening to it several times since then too, and some other tracks. That one was so refreshing and I love the production.
'New Americana' is also amazing, but I knew that one before. That chorus, my gosh. 'Ghost' too of course, the verses are so infectious and the chorus is so melancholic in contrast. I didn't notice any differences between this version and the one on 'Room 93' though?
'Haunting' is definitely very interesting as well, I especially love the intro with the vocal cut-ups. I think that one will only grow and grow on me.
Yay Matt! Roman Holiday is one of my favourites at first I thought it was kinda dull but the more I hear it the more infectious it is to me
I kinda want to run a rate of the deluxe edition of this, but I'm not entirely sure it would get enough responses
Amazed that this has done so well, I completely underestimated the hype/level of interest surrounding her currently. Just going to listen now, Hold Me Down sounds like Lena singing a Katy Perry song.
I listened to this a couple of times last night and I am truly in love with her voice. When I first heard 'New Americana' many months ago I thought she reminded me of Janet Devlin, and I'm pleased to say that her vocal style reminds me of Janet (and Diana and Lena in places) throughout the album. I really enjoyed the album and have bought it from HMV!
'New Americana' is of course the shining song here and should be as big as Lorde's 'Royals' across the globe, but on this listen of the album i've really fallen in love with 'Colors'. Her vocals
Did not expect to find out how good this was! Colours, and New Americana and Ghost especially (and of course Lost Kings remix of it but it wasn't on there)
The video for New Americana is finally out!
I love video series' so much, this one is already really great and by that ending it looks like Drive will be the next video
Yesss I'm going to see her in Brixton.
Wait have you got tickets already????
Hopefully going to see her in Glasgow
Glasgow sold put ridiculously quick so I didn't get tickets this time, maybe with a bit of luck she will upgrade the venue or add another date
Got tickets now! Thank god she upgraded the Glasgow venue
Yeah so "Colors" is the next single
http://www.fuse.tv/2016/01/halsey-new-single-colors-badlands
Oooh yea I knew about this! Very happy as it's my favourite from the album
New Americana is the "new" UK single. It's Radio 1's track of the day.
Halsey announced today via her Twitter that Badlands has been certified gold as has New Americana as a single! (I presume in the US)
Colors has been playing a few times on SongPop so I was thinking it would be the next single
Best choice for single though, as the only other tracks I rank higher are Ghost and New Americana
because spadz mentioned the word rank and I think a separate thread for it would flop, here comes an 'unofficial' rate of both Room 93 and Badlands
Room 93
11.0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=686SmDtBOu8
10.0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5hGGYKOle0
09.0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR9G7ioLLmc
08.0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSVQicbrHQo
10.0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2aTxmwRiJQ
Idk why there isn't as much discussion on Room 93, it's pretty much flawless and all it took was one listen of it and I was hooked on Halsey's music and couldn't wait for her album, Empty Gold being the only 'weak link' in it for me and it's not even a bad song, it's amazing but does feel a tad out of place for me and is clearly the track she was like 'okay lets just experiment with weirdness here' I've linked all the audios because you all need to listen to it tbh Also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_TusDs1D0s of Is There Somewhere is basically what made me love the song even more than I already did.
Badlands (Deluxe)
09.5 Castle
09.5 Hold Me Down
10.0 New Americana
09.0 Drive
09.0 Hurricane
09.5 Roman Holiday
09.0 Ghost
11.0 Colours
06.0 Colours Part 2
10.0 Strange Love
08.5 Coming Down
09.5 Haunting
08.0 Gasoline
09.0 Control
07.5 Young God
07.5 I Walk The Line
This album is honestly my favourite from 2015, I tried to be quite critical here but I just cant, it's such an incredible album, I still can't get over how good it is and still listen to all of these songs constantly. Colours being my favourite, it always has been since I first heard it, everything is just stunning about it, the lyrics especially. I could write so much praising each song on this album tbh but I won't dw Colours Part 2 is a bit of a "doesn't really add anything to the album, why is it here???" for me, I just think it sounds like a snippet from a remix rather than another part to a song, that's literally the only thing that disappoints me about the deluxe edition of this album but I imagine it provides a really cool intro or outro for her live shows so maybe I will appreciate it more after I've seen her live if she incorporates it
~ That's enough Halsey stanning for one evening I think
Ooh, great idea Lindsey! I might get around to doing this as well soon
I'll do 'Badlands' when I'm back home later as I want to listen to the whole thing again to do this but I don't really have time to listen to it now because I have to leave soon, but I'll do 'Room 93' now. It's so good!
08 Is There Somewhere
Interesting, haunting (geddit? ) song, my favourite parts are the "I'm sorry but I fell in love tonight" ones. Some of the earlier parts of the song aren't as strong for me and that brought the score down a bit, but I do really enjoy this song.
10 Ghost
I remember listening to this all the time at first I gave it 10 at first, then 9.5, now it's back to 10, ever the overthinker when it comes to rates It's catchy as hell and the chorus is really moving.
08.5 Hurricane
This is one that kind of grew on me. The first few times I listened to it, I wasn't too excited by it but now it's really good. I like how it kinda "sweeps", especially the chorus. I also like how intricate the production is.
09 Empty Gold
I can't quite put my finger on why, but I've always been really excited by this song. There's something about the chorus and the groovy beats right after the chorus. The verses could be a little better I guess.
09.5 Trouble (Stripped)
I think it was a good idea to end the EP with a stripped-down ballad as a lot of the rest of the EP is quite intricately produced so this is a great change and a lovely way to end it. I really like the melody.
So overall a really good EP, was part of a very enjoyable discovery of her music and I always associate it with Lottsey and plug.dj
So I did a Highlights thing in my EOY last year and for Badlands I rated some of the songs:
New Americana 9/10
Ghost 8/10 (Lost Kings remix would be 9)
Colors 7.5+/10 (growing to become and 8)
Roman Holiday 7.5/10
Haunting 7.5/10
Hold Me Down 7/10
The rest are 6.5 or lower but as this kind of music is hit and miss for me it's quite a good quality album. Might edit the full rates later.
Okay, let's do this! Get ready for some full blown album analysis from me..... (which I have never done before so please stick with me! )
Room 93
10 Is There Somewhere
11 Ghost
09 Hurricane
10 Empty Gold
10 Trouble (Stripped)
Oh I tried so hard to be harsh. Hurricane could so easily have been a 10, in fact any one of these could have been an 11 for me. The second I heard this EP I instantly fell in love with her. Is There Somewhere probably would've been rated down to a 9 before I started watching her live performances, but honestly watching videos of her perform this has increased my love for this song so much. Especially when she crowd surfs during it occasionally (I've just realised Lindsey has linked to an incredible performance of it) GHOST This was the first Halsey song I actually heard, I was just on twitter/tumblr and I had seen her name everywhere so decided to just youtube her name and watch the first song which came up. I have still not got sick of this song, it's an absolute jam! Hurricane is another beautiful track, I especially love the video for it. My feelings to Empty Gold are pretty similar to Mattias' actually It really stands out to me (admittedly I could say that for all of these songs ) and I love all the different layers to it. Finally Trouble is an absolutely beautiful way to round off this EP which shows off her vocals stunningly.
As Lindsey said, there isn't loads of discussion around this EP here. I urge you all to go listen to it, it's wonderful
Badlands (Deluxe)
10 Castle
10 Hold Me Down
10 New Americana
09 Drive
09 Hurricane
07 Roman Holiday
10 Ghost
10 Colours
05 Colours Part II
11 Strange Love
08 Coming Down
08 Haunting
10 Gasoline
09 Control
10 Young God
08 I Walk The Line
WHAT AN ALBUM. Anyone else still playing this on repeat on at least a weekly basis?? First off, the overall concept for this album. I'm a huge fan of concept albums, and listening to this album really did not disappoint me. The songs are so cohesive yet each have their individual strengths, and the overall theme of Halsey's mental state really ties it together. I bought the box set for this as well which fit perfectly with the whole theme of this album, so aesthetic wise the album is an 11 as well Firstly, Castle is SUCH an excellent opener. I love the use of a choir in the build up to the chorus. In a way it's such a simple song which perfectly sets up the album. Hold Me Down is SUCH a powerful song for me, it's where her stronger vocals really start to come through and the pace speeds up a bit more from Castle imo. Then we have New Americana, which arguably is the song of hers which most people know This is again another huge infectious track, which gets me singing and dancing along a lot Conceptually I find this song incredibly clever, and of course the video for it is really interesting! I'm very excited for the continuation Drive is another clever song (I think I'm just going to be calling everything clever) and I adore the use of driving noises throughout in the instrumental. I always found the placement of this song interesting as it's track 4, however the song is about Halsey leaving the Badlands Next is Hurricane, which I've already commented on in the Room 93 EP, however the crossover with this song from Room 93 EP onto Badlands works incredibly well. Okay Roman Holiday is obviously the song I've marked lowest (I think we can clearly establish Colours Part 2 isn't really a song more an interlude). It's by no means a bad song, it's just a bit of a weak link compared to the rest of the album imo, there's almost something a bit too generic to it for me? I have to admit I did used to skip this song when it came up on shuffle, but recently it has grown on me a lot more. NEXT WE HAVE GHOST WHICH IS MY JAM EVERY TIME I WON'T GO INTO THIS AGAIN. Colours was another 10 for me. Lyrically, this is my favourite song of hers, I have SUCH high hopes from the video for this. "You're ripped at every edge but you're a masterpiece", "I know I've only felt religion when I've lied with you" JUST LOOK AT THEM. Maybe I was a bit too harsh with Part II, but as an interlude I don't feel like it added that much. STRANGE LOVE!!! Okay first of, I hope the sink mentioned in the first line isn't the same "overflowing sink" as mentioned in Colours :x This song became my instant favourite when listening to the album for the first time, there's a certain innocence to the chorus which contrasts with the verses which I just adore. This comes a very close second to Colours in terms of my favourite lyrics! The beginning of Coming Down reminds me of Drive again, and whilst being one of the more slower tracks of the album, it's very simple, catchy and effective. Haunting builds up very well the mood set in Coming Down, I find this song quite peaceful. Then with Gasoline we're back to absolute JAMS This is probably one of the most interesting songs on the album, and I'm attracted to it similarly to how I loved Empty Gold in Room 93 with it's different layers Control was a song which didn't grab me instantly when listening to the album however after listening to the album a few more times it now stands out as a track more on it's own to me. To be honest, it's almost exactly the same with Young God. I used to skip this one, but I wouldn't be able to now, it's hauntingly beautiful I think Halsey said that she hoped that all of her fans losed their virginity to this song Finally, I Walk the Line. Was I the only one who didn't realise this was a cover?! After I found out (which was only a couple of weeks ago admittedly) I listened to the Johnny Cash original, and I was blown away by how much Halsey had made this song her own. Whilst it's not one of my favourites, I think this is a stunning way to round off the album. Overall this whole album is one of my all time favourites, I totally recommend driving to it by the way, most of my friends stan Halsey as well and we always play Badlands and go for drives belting out all the words
I tried too hard not to stan, but I had to let it all out This album is too beautiful to not attempt to do it any justice!
Lotti That was so interesting to read, just how you interpret each song etc and I've decided that I will write a paragraph or so going through the album as we actually have similar thoughts (idk why I'm still surprised at this point)
I appologise in advance for the length this will probably be and the level of stanning/looning and cringeyness this probably will have
I'm just gonna start off by explaining how I first heard Badlands because it wasn't really the typical way I listen to a new album... I was on holiday down in England at the time, in the middle of nowhere, I was in the car pretty much the whole day the album dropped as we were travelling to new accommodation, I had no wifi and had no laptop so I couldn't go onto Spotify and listen to it that way so I listened to it using the app on my phone, relying on my 3G and because I only use the free version, I couldn't listen to the songs in order, I didn't realise how much that would shape my opinion of each song as with a concept album, especially one like Badlands where the story runs through the order of the songs, you really need to listen to it in order to appreciate it fully. Anyway Control was the first song I heard, and I was loving it, it was pretty level melodically the whole way though and then I completely lost my shit at the build up near the end where the strings come in, followed by the heavy drum beat, I'm not even over-exaggerating, there were literal tears, it just hit me so hard, my stomach literally sinks just before that part every time I hear it, it's the instrumental more than anything and then her solo vocal beautifully rounding it off at the end I'm not sure if I reacted this way because it was the first song I heard or what, I knew just by that though that this album was going to be insane.
Castle, I wasn't sure about at first, the choir I was kinda ummm does this fit? but the more I listened to it the more I loved it and like Lotti said, it's a perfect opener, completely sets the scene of the badlands and the overall tone of the album, the introduction to it is just everything. Hold Me Down, I had this on repeat for soooooo long, before the album was even released- this was my jam, i was sure nothing could top it (colours does ) I just love the attitude of it, I discovered that it samples a Son Lux track though and usually with sampling I'm kind of like, this artist clearly has no originality if they have to have someone else's song as a basis for their own, but honestly Hold Me Down completely has it's own identity, in this case sampling is not lazy, and completely makes the song and shows how well Halsey can take a concept and make it her own, basically the same can be said for I Walk The Line. New Ameriana, I think the message is so clever in this, the whole album as a concept is incredible tbh, Halsey has already become my favourite lyricist, she just has such a way with words (not just with singing, I can literally sit and listen to her talk in interviews for hours) NA is such an anthem in its own right, it's the biggest (not quite the best imo) track from the album and is entirely worthy of being the lead single. Drive is stunning, i just ugh. It's too good. Again, it's the lyrics "all we do is thing about the feelings that we hide", this is just so true, the whole topic of the song just connects to me in a way, idk. Roman Holiday, I completely agree with what Lotti said, even though I did mark it quite high, it was very generic to me at first, but the more i listen to it, the more i fall in love with it, just the whole idea of escaping to somewhere better, very relevant to me personally right now, just feeling pretty stuck etc Colours, I honestly can't praise enough, idek how to give it a description or comment that gives it justice, it's just everything to me, one of my all time favourite songs, the lyrics "you're ripped at every edge but you're a masterpiece and now you're tearing through the pages and the ink" is my favourite lyric ever, the visual it gives is just Strange Love, okay this was the song I skipped a lot at first but songs that are quite explicit, or sound quite harsh tend not to be my thing so when the first thing you hear is "everybody wants to know if we f***** on the bathroom sink" it can be a bit of a put off lol but like Lotti said, the contrast between the harsh verses and the chorus makes the song incredible, the instrumental too it is so cool too (for lack of a better phrase ) Coming Down, to me it's like a part two to drive, just with the wiper sounds, the clearly link in, to me maybe drive is about trying to escape the badlands and then coming down is actually achieving that, which would explain the track-listing, very nice song, i love it when songs tie in with each other, and the fact that this whole album is a running narrative describing Halsey's bipolar, it just makes it so much better Haunting, the vocals and the production on this song is fantastic. Her voice on this track, I just am so amazed by it, I don't really know what else to say about it even though it's one of my faves, this simplicity of it is just stunning. Aside from Control the next few songs (Gasoline, Young God and I Walk The Line) kinda just merge into a bit of a blur for me, they are amazing tracks but I just think they maybe lack that edge or clear stamp of individuality that the rest of the album has, I think maybe knowing IWTL is a cover does that, it's not a message coming from her, it's not her lyrics even though she does make the song her own and admittedly at first I didn't realise it was a cover, that's how well she interprets it into her own style. I like the feel of Gasoline more than anything, I've already mentioned how Halsey is so good at creating a mental visual via her words but she also does that with the melodies too, I get a kind of oriental feel from Gasoline, which is cool I think it's really rare to find a songwriter who can create such vivid visuals through their music and that's always something I've seen in Halsey's music, it's probably why I love her so much
And Lotti thought her post was long
I love how our opinions are similar, both having the same fav lyric from Colours tho That was a lovely read Lindsey!
I don't know how I'm gonna top those :') Those were both fantastic reviews, obviously written with lots of enthusiasm. I feel like it would be impossible for me to write anything close to that really, of that length or as passionate as that, because I haven't formed quite as many strong opinions on the album, despite liking it a lot. And I didn't know 'I Walk the Line' was a cover either
Since I said I was going to, I might rate/comment on 'Badlands' tomorrow. (I know I said I was going to do it today but yeah lol)
"Colors" Official Music Video:
EDIT: TYLER POSEY I CAN'T
Such a beautiful video
On Tuesday I saw Halsey in Brixton on the BADLANDS tour. I came away absolutely mesmerised, the set list was wonderful, the staging was beautiful and she put on such a great show. I've never heard such a loud crowd before either!
Love the video! I knew the song was about her wanting a daddy
omg yes Lotti, the crowd was the same at the Glasgow show, could barely hear her over them at some parts they were so loud! :') I love the video too, Halsey looks stunning in it, is it me or is it slower compared to the usual audio though??
I'm still in disbelief at Tyler Posey in the "Colors" video.
i think i'd love new americana if it was sung by someone else and didn't have any of the same lyrics
New version of Castle, obsessed on this
oooooh maybe there will be a music video for this as well? I saw a gif set of her on tumblr dressed as a queen or something so that would explain it
i'm 30 seconds in and already crying
I found this version a little boring compared to the original oop
update im still crying
OMG it's stunning, I've never bought a song so quickly before
Video coming soon
hyped! She looks stunning

They're really milking it this week, first it gets played on Dance Moms as part of a sponsorship with Lifetime, and now this? I'm expecting big things from the movie then.
This remix is kind of slaying me right now:
Oh yess, I really like that too!
Castle has always been one of my main favourites but I love the new version too. I love how even MORE dramatic it is
Blonde have remixed Colours:
Not a bad result tbh! Not as euphoric as original tho
PHENOMENAL ALBUM. HOLY SHIT. BUMP. BUMP. BUMP.
This bitch has the voice of an angel, matched with the tone of the album it's just unmatched. Best album I've heard in the last 5 years.
I think she dated Josh Dun too
It doesn't get much better.
WHY ARENT THEY MARRIED 🦋
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!! THINK OF THE CHILDREN
"Badlands (Live from Webster Hall)" is out on Friday - exactly 5 years after the original album!
