So to start us off.....
20. All Around The World
Whatcha gonna do when the walls come falling down?
At over 5 minutes this song is overlong and indulgent. A suitable description of Be Here Now actually! This is still a decent song, the second best from the album I have barely listened to. I even stood in line outside HMV to buy Be Here Now on its day of release in 1997, and have a certificate prove it
Chris Moyles once segued this song perfectly with the All Saints Never Ever to make Hearsay's Pure and Simple!
19. Some Might Say
The sink is full of fishes, She's got dirty dishes on the brain
So Oasis's first UK number 1 - news imparted to me at the time by The Big Breakfast. Gabby Roslin said it was nice to have some rocky stuff at the top of the charts! Not an obvious album opener in my opinion and certainly not be best Whats The Story single (or the worst, looking at you Roll With It), Some Might Say does have some happy memories attached to it. All in all, C-, could do better.
A great number 1!
Not a big fan of All Around The World, it's always reminded me of a nursery rhyme in terms of the tune and it's far far far too long.
Some Might Say is a classic though. I was so surprised when it hit #1 but I was over the moon, I like it a great deal. It's the most 'Definitely Maybe' sounding song on the What's The Story album so I can see why it forms a good stepping stone between the two albums.
18. Married With Children
Your music's shite, it keeps me up all night
The closing track of Definitely Maybe has always been a favourite of mine and how I suspect a relationship wold turn out if I ever had one! The song about pettiness was inspired by Noel's girlfriend complaining how his guitar practice was keeping her awake!
17. Cigarettes & Alcohol
Is it my imagination, Or have I finally found something worth living for?
Classic early Oasis here, and the first time I properly noticed them in '94. This one of the 'rougher' tracks on Definitely Maybe and a social statement of the working class jobless 90s.
Another couple of good choices there. I really like Married with Children too, they were quite good at getting some poignant tracks out of everyday Northern life. I like tracks like Digsy's Dinner and She's Electric much more now than I did at the time.
16. Talk Tonight
All your dreams are made, Of Strawberry lemonade
One B-side of Some Might Say, this song is far better and goes to show the strength of Oasis's B-sides and the poor choices for singles and album tracks (more later). This track is inspired by a near break up of the band in LA back in the autumn of 1994 (and how a girl talked Noel out of taking his own life). Heavy stuff, great song.
I rather like All Around The World - pauses to check how much (peaked at 5 and a long run) - though I think the video went on a bit, if I'm remembering right. Two of the others I don't know - I never bought Def Maybe and B sides tend not to get played if I bought the old fashioned singles!
Talk Tonight is lovely Their b sides during the Whatever EP and Morning Glory era were superb.
Was She's Electric never a single?
Happy that 'Some Might Say' has made it into your countdown
15. The Importance Of Being Idle
I don't mind, as long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine
Oasis's last official number 1 and a vast improvement on its predecessor Layla. This is a wonderfully quirky song (a foreshadowing of what Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds would sound like) and is apparently named after a book title Noel found in a garage. The only 21st century Oasis song on this countdown!
14. Half The World Away
I've been lost, I've been found but I don't feel down
Both a B-side on Whatever and the theme song to The Royale Family, this beautiful song is another example of a stellar Oasis B-side. This actually charted in its own right making number 56 in 2015 following the cover by Aurora.
13. Supersonic
I know a girl called Elsa, She's into Alka Seltzer
I have always had a soft spot for Supersonic, mainly for the lyrics (my favourite is above) and Liam's exaggerated pronunciation. As a debut single, this still packs a massive punch.
12. Morning Glory
Need a little to wake up
Although an album track in the UK, Morning Glory was released as a single in Australia and New Zealand (which is why there is a full video). This is a cracking song, starting with a helicopter (more successfully than D'You Know What I Mean!) and managing to seague right into Champagne Supernova at the end.
11. She’s Electric
She's got a cousin, in fact she's got 'bout a dozen
She's Electric is such a jolly tune and the missing single from What's The Story? imo. A summary according to Noel Gallagher: "It's about a boy who's got a girlfriend, and he used to go out with her sister, that he fancies her mother, doesn't get on with her brother, and, as somebody gets her cousin, pregnant, and everybody thinks it was him, because he's a bit of a f---in' run c---, but it wasn't."
Oh good my fave one hasn't gone yet! I shan't mention it in case you don't list it haha
Tori Amos had the best b-sides of the 90s but Oasis had some great ones too
I love Morning Glory too, one of the best in the album... so many great album tracks and still they picked Roll With It as 2nd single
10. Acquiesce
Because we need each other, We believe in one another
The B-side to Some Might Say and originally considered to be half of a double A side. A shame it wasn't as this is far superior to Some Might Say although musically pretty similar.
9. Stand By Me
Made a meal and threw it up on Sunday
By far the best Oasis post Morning Glory single, and easily the best song on Be Here Now. Denied number 1 by Elton John's Candle In the Wind 97, this is a stone cold Oasis classic. I particularly love how Noel's and Liam's voice meld perfectly in the chorus.
Good to see so many B-Sides in here. I genuinely think The Masterplan is better than any of their albums. Acquiesce would definitely be in my top 3.
Acquisce is great, one of the best b-sides together with The Masterplan and Half the world away
sure it's better than anything the band did in the 2010s
good choice of lesser tracks, I often preferred the bonus tracks to the singles. She's Electric was better than most of the singles, Idle is fab. I usually bought the best singles rather than the albums, bar Morning Glory, in the 90's, though I have a few of them now.
8. Don’t Look Back In Anger
And so Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as we're walking on by
My favourite number 1 of all time and a bona fide 90s classic. I never have found out who Sally is though or why she needs to wait.
7. Wonderwall
Backbeat the word was on the street, That the fire in your heart is out
Probably Oasis's signature song and one of the best number 2's ever. I have always been a bit baffled as to why this and DLBIA were the third and fourth singles from Whats The Story? (Morning Glory) instead of the first and second, bit Oasis weren't really known for picking the right singles! I sang this live when I used to do amateur dramatics back in the day.
VIDEO PLEASE.
I still remember when the Morning glory album was released I kept telling everybody that there was this song on it that was gonna be the biggest song ever... of course I meant Don't Look Back in Anger and not Wonderwall
6. Live Forever
Lately, did you ever feel the pain, In the morning rain, As it soaks you to the bone?
Narrowly my favourite Oasis single and where Definitely Maybe wins out over Whats The Story. I think this was the single that really got everyone attention at the time and accelerated the Oasis journey setting them up for bigger things.
Permission to post number 21?
Also, any predictions for the top 5?
I'm not totally sure but I'm going to go with...
Champagne Supernova
Cast No Shadow
Whatever (it should be here but your post for Live Forever suggests it won't be!)
Round Are Way (probably not but I really like it)
errrrrr Rock n Roll Star? Or maybe Slide Away?!!
Ok, so posting the one I forgot to add into the countdown (my bad).
6A. Whatever
Always seems to me, You only see what people want you to see
ARGH! Cannot believe I forgot the excellent Whatever. Lets call this one 6A
Anyway, the Christmas '94 top 3 hit, the most Beatles sounding Oasis song (and that's saying something!) and the one that isn't on a studio album (and I have this on 12" vinyl).
Oh hold on, we haven't had The Masterplan yet have we?
'Don't Look Back In Anger' just symbolises the 90s for me!
I think 'Live Forever' is my overall Oasis favourite so I'm pleased to see it so high for you too *.*
You've prompted me to listen to Oasis again over the past two days, I've decided my ideal playlist is:
01 D'You Know What I Mean? (NG's 2016 version)
02 Rock 'n' Roll Star
03 Roll With It
04 Talk Tonight
05 Live Forever
06 Wonderwall
07 Don't Look Back In Anger
08 The Masterplan
09 Part Of The Queue
10 Some Might Say
11 Cigarettes & Alcohol
12 The Importance Of Being Idle
13 Stand By Me
14 Cast No Shadow
15 She's Electric
16 Round Are Way
17 Falling Down
18 Whatever
19 Half The World Away
20 Acquiesce
21 Supersonic
22 Fade In-Out
23 Morning Glory
24 Untitled II
25 Champagne Supernova
So all in all not too dissimilar to your list! I'll be interested to see if any of your top 5 don't feature, maybe I'm missing something!
Good mix there Dandy* - you have 3 out of 5 of my top 5 there
Hmmmm so 2 missing, I wonder if I do like them but just haven't thought of them yet... or whether you have questionable taste!!!
You don't have any of my top 3 yet, so I'm hoping they're all in the top 5!
I think one of the top 5 will surprise you, it’s personally adored by me, but not well thought of by most fans! 5 and 4 will be posted soon....
5. The Masterplan
Please brother let it be
All hail the best B-side ever. I am still gobsmacked that this was not a main single, or on a studio album. One of the B-Sides of Wonderwall (itself one of THE songs of the 90s) goes to show what a high point Oasis were on at this point in their career. Even Noel Gallagher cannot believe that this was now only a B-Side!
4. Hey Now!
I took a walk with my fame down memory lane
Ahh, the one no-one could guess! This track isn't well liked, even by Oasis who never played it live. However, this song holds so many good memories for me and its just so damn melodic! Will always be a personal fave and I think this is the most under-rated song on Whats The Story?
Ohhhhh... I don't dislike Hey Now but it's definitely not a huge favourite of mine.
And RFC, I hadn't even noticed I didn't include Slide Away
3. Champagne Supernova
Slowly walking down the hall, Faster than a cannonball
Classic has been a bit over-used by me in this thread, but I think Champagne Supernova is the ultimate classic album track. This seven minute anthem is the closing track on (What's The Story) Morning Glory? and is epic Oasis at their best.
woh! at that 4-some of Dont Look Back, Wonderwall, Live Forever and Whatever..... My top 4 tracks plus Idle. The Masterplan and Champagne Supernova are fab though, but Hey Now is not one I recall at all (and I bought the album that year!), it just didn't sink into my brain cells at all
This has got me back into Wonderwall. I went off this song after hearing a terrible drunken version of this at a karaoke night over 20 years ago..
2. Slide Away
Hold me down, all the world's asleep, Need you now, you knocked me off my feet
My favourite song from Definitely Maybe, I think I truly fell in love with Slide Away while away for a Uni field trip in Norfolk back in 1996. Very happy times!
1. Cast No Shadow
As they took his soul they stole his pride
I think Cast No Shadow has been my favourite Oasis song since pretty much October/November 1995 when I first heard it. I didn't know until after 1997 that the song was dedicated to Richard Ashcroft of the Verve, and it is so fitting. An utterly beautiful ballad.
(What's The Story) Morning Glory? wins out in the end!
1 Cast No Shadow
2 Slide Away
3 Champagne Supernova
4 Hey Now!
5 The Masterplan
6 Live Forever
(6A Whatever)
7 Wonderwall
8 Don’t Look Back In Anger
9 Stand By Me
10 Acquiesce
11 She’s Electric
12 Morning Glory
13 Supersonic
14 Half The World Away
15 The Importance Of Being Idle
16 Talk Tonight
17 Cigarettes & Alcohol
18 Married With Children
19 Some Might Say
20 All Around The World
Thanks for all the comments, much appreciated!
Great winner! I don't actually know what my favourite would be but Cast No Shadow would definitely be up there
Some great less obvious choices of favourites here, Cast No Shadow's a great choice of number 1, one of my favourite non singles Champagne Supernova is also iconic, doesn't seem right that that wasn't a single here!
I really need to dig out Morning Glory then - I bought the CD in Florida and it's in a separate CD filing rack of records I bought abroad, and which I tend not to notice. I almost certainly haven't played it since the 90's oops! Thanks for the push Jester
was just reading this about Cast No Shadow the other day:
I don’t believe people can go into a studio and record B-sides. It’s either a good song or a bad song. And I never intend to write a bad song! The only time I’ve really sat down to write a B-side I wrote “Cast No Shadow”, which was supposed to be a B-side but it ended up really good. There’s a bit at the end of “Cast No Shadow” when someone says down the mic really quietly, ‘Tha’ll do for a B-side’. So we had to take that out when it came to put it on the album.
Haven't heard this no1 much, thanks for giving me the incentive to have another listen!
