Posted by: Rob S 8th September 2016, 11:14 PM

I want 2009 GaGa dominance back even a slightly small scale like Bad Romance when that entered at 14 & climbed to it's peak. Please happen teresa.gif

Posted by: Brett-Butler 8th September 2016, 11:18 PM

Pfft. It's all about Busted this week (not that it'll do much, given that it was a free single a few months back).

Just looked for the Busted track on iTunes and couldn't find it and they have listed it under B.U.S.T.E.D? Like the track and not what I was expecting

Most likely midnight US time - It's currently just gone 7.30pm here on the East Coast so another 4.5 hours yet.

Posted by: JosephStyles 8th September 2016, 11:36 PM

Yup 5am for Gaga in the UK!

Posted by: jazzy_765 8th September 2016, 11:41 PM

Thanks smile.gif I hope she has a more successful era than Artpop proved to be.... Still find it upsetting that Applause wasn't bigger.... My favourite Gaga song... Completely got overshadowed by Katy Perry's Roar! sick2.gif

It's like an angry TEOG. Such a crazy song I have absolutely no idea how it will do but I don't think it sounds like a hit.

I like it - IMO the best thing she's released since her first album. smile.gif

Kind of a power-ballady sound.

Nope, I guess it'll be a Calvin Harris vs Emeli Sande battle next week.

Gaga on with Grimmy this morning suggests to me that it'll be getting good support from Radio 1....possibly straight to B List? Will be interesting!

Things seem stacked in her favour at the moment - she's advertised and first track on the New Music Friday playlist and I believe there are other advertisements on Spotify too.

Also, and this is probably more subjective, the track seems to require a few listens to get used to it, which could easily boost her streams a bit.

Posted by: Bjork 9th September 2016, 08:53 AM

she'll also have lots of curiosity streams, even from the gaga-haters

Posted by: danG 9th September 2016, 09:02 AM

I think she'll debut top 50 on Spotify considering she's well promoted on there. I'm still not fully sold on the song but there's no denying the marketing so far has been excellent.

Didn't expect Post Malone to start so strongly (although that's down to the Bieber feature I imagine).

Lady GaGa still desperate I see judging by the heavy marketing and promotion this admittedly different sounding song is receiving.

I guess Twin Atlantic, Bastille, Travis Scott, Sia, Kings Of Leon and OneRepublic are all desperate, they are also heavily promoted on the front page of iTunes and Apple Music heehee.gif

Mess. God forbid an artist would want to market and promote their material.

Does that logic apply to everyone who has banners on the streaming/download sites, i.e every major artist IN THE WORLD?

A bit of a joke there.

You can ask why people still buy songs from Chris Brown after what he did.

James Arthur wasn't obviously taught how to deal with the media after winning the X Factor. He's put his hands up and said sorry. But I can see why people ask why are we buying his songs.

Wonderful to see Lady Gaga doing so well, i would welcome her going number 1 officialy next Friday, i hope she can get good streaming. I applaud that she is pulling out the stops to promote and market as for established acts its getting harder and harder to get a high peak. I would welcome many more established artists doing the same.

The new Celine Dion song is fabulous and deserves a far higher placing than it currently has, i would welcome increases throughout the week for this beautiful song.

Last week's #1 had a combined total of 76k - I know sales have really dropped recently but isn't GaGa still the type of artist that could get 70k sales alone? I mean, it's been 3 years since she was last around in the charts and I'd say PI is more of an event than Applause was...

Posted by: ___∆___ 9th September 2016, 02:01 PM

So pleased for Gaga! wub.gif And I know sales are low but who knew James Arthur was still relevant (And I see he's still with Sony but the German arm of the business).

Posted by: pippa 9th September 2016, 02:06 PM

Gaga could indeed attract high sales (sales only) streaming is what may let her down.

Really surprised to see James Arthur so high but I would believe he will drop each day and if lucky will manage a top 100 entry.

Delighted to see Olly Murs climbing within the top 10 again, if his streaming could improve he would easily have a top 10 hit (officially).

True but by 2013 the GP got tired of GaGa's antics and there was a backlash against her. Applause was also too theatrical to be massive. It seemed like a single only her fanbase would eat up. Whereas PI comes at a time where she's redeemed herself through being out of the public eye musically for 3 years - plus PI itself is a lot more instant and universal than Applause.

I agree - i think it's a very mediocre song. Her fans are falling over themselves to praise it, naturally, but I don't think it's strong enough to garner decent radio support. I expect it to fall rapidly on itunes.

James Arthur has always had a big fanbase I think Syco were too hasty dropping him tbh . His debut single and Album did decently both charted at number 2 . His single would have got number 1 as well if it wasn't for the massive single that was 'Royals' which came out the same week . I think they probably did drop him due to all the controversy with him on Twitter which ok he was an idiot for but he's a talented guy so I'm glad he's getting a second shot .

TBH I'm shocked at how well he's doing - he's been away for several years so to be challenging for Top 10 with a release with no build up is big for him.

Also I know Syco dropped him but he is still part of the Sony family - he is signed to Sony Germany so while Syco parted ways with him he has remained with the overall company.

James Arthur doing better on iTunes than Lady GaGa, who would have thought?

Posted by: Bjork 12th September 2016, 11:38 AM

If he could be top 10 all week
And make 2k-ish per day
He could make the top 40
Even with poor streaming

Yeah, I noticed that. Does anyone know what the criteria is for them adding songs to the NMF playlist? Or is it literally what the person who's compiling it feels like at the time? Surely James Arthur is a big enough name to include, especially as the song is half decent.

Posted by: *.* 13th September 2016, 08:24 AM

Ah yes good point Bjork - I forgot Dancing On My Own wasn't combined. Years and Years have had a decent start, climbing into the top 100.

I doubt it was purposely excluded from the playlist, maybe the compiler didn't realise it was out, who knows. It's not some Spotify vendetta when he was on some other countries' playlists.

Hoping Y&Y can climb nice and high, great song!

Posted by: AcerBen 13th September 2016, 10:19 AM

It's an outrage how much influence the curated playlists have on the chart now. I know it's never been a truly level playing field - in the physical era it was largely down to availability e.g. not being stocked in Woolies meant you had no chance of making the top 10. But it feels wrong that a song can go top 5 on iTunes and still not be top 100 on Spotify.

Plus we have records that have had absolutely no mainstream support (and next to no downloads) making the official top 100 purely because they have managed to get on these playlists.

Posted by: mdh 13th September 2016, 10:21 AM

The iTunes chart should be a featured playlist - updated every morning with the iTunes top 50.

The chart needs some sensible recurrency rules. That's the only thing that I can think of that would make sense. Tweaking the chart to decrease the impact of streaming and increase the impact of iTunes downloads doesn't make sense as streaming is growing and downloading is declining.

They need to do something like not counting streams from playlists or only counting listens from paid members

Posted by: mdh 13th September 2016, 11:51 AM

I think they should only count the equivalent of one sale of streams by one person - that way there would no longer be a mishmash of buys and plays in the chart.

Oh no I didn't mean the chart should be tweaked in favour of downloads. tongue.gif I agree with your idea (there was a poster who also had a list of good ideas for how the chart should be altered). It's just a shame that now streaming is taking off, it's a lot harder for new acts to break through. It's almost as if the Spotify playlists dictate what is popular. Maybe a brand new prime time music show should coexist with this chart format? Idk I'm just thinking out loud. laugh.gif

tho these are the same people that are keeping that callum scott in the top 5 so can't rly be shocked

I guess it depends whether or not you can give people a 2nd chance and accept they made a mistake; which judging from twitter and some interviews he has done, he knows he was a complete dick and seems genuinely shocked/ surprised that the song is doing as well as it has. He even said he was lucky it made it into the top 100 let alone going top 10.

I'm gay and don't see the point in continuing to dislike someone for comments made 3+ years ago and clearly at a time when he wasn't in a great place - if I did continue to do that, then I'd really be no better than James was at the time it all kicked off.

Well technically the fan was 17 and only underage given he was in the states had it happened in the UK then the underage part wouldn't even be a problem

I'm not even a fan tbh, but I just don't see the point in people harping on about stuff he clearly regrets over 3 years ago

Before anyone comes at me for comparing the two, I know it's not exactly the same but... Chris Brown begged forgiveness and tried to turn his image around in the couple of years after the Rihanna incident but that good boy image didn't last long once he got radio etc back on side. Fair play to James for actually managing to turn his career around (it is still early days yet though) but if he starts his **** again, I hope he doesn't get a third chance.

Posted by: pippa 13th September 2016, 03:23 PM

I would be all for second chances and i agree it is wonderful to see James turn his career around, at this stage it looks like he has a sizeable hit on his hands which will increase interest in his new album. I would like to believe he has learned from his mistakes and his apologies are genuine, for now i will give him the benefit of the doubt. If he goes down the same road again i would not be happy to have him back in the public eye as when he was bad he was awful, he said too many hurtful and nasty things about a lot of people.

13. Kanye West - Fade surprised this is doing so much better than Famous on iTunes, but that's probably because it actually got released to iTunes while still playlised on Radio 1. It's not doing so well on streaming though.
18. Years & Years - Meteorite (From "Bridget Jones's Baby") was expecting this to do a bit better
41. Kungs - Don't You Know (feat. Jamie N Commons) disappointing that this isn't taking off even with 59p.
45. Gavin James - Nervous (The Ooh Song) (Mark McCabe Remix) still climbing, could see this being big
46. Tory Lanez - Luv good to see this and Cool Girl top 50 on iTunes now as well as Spotify, future top 40 hits I think

All that means is that Columbia Germany are calling the shots in producing the album. It'll be Columbia UK who are managing the promotion in the UK.

Impossible was a big hit in Germany - and many other parts of the world too.

Posted by: gooddelta 14th September 2016, 12:03 PM

Hmm, seems weird that Gavin James will probably end up being a dance one hit wonder in the UK, when he's actually a well respected and popular singer-songwriter in Ireland! Nice to see Mark McCabe charting here though with something, shame Maniac 2000 never got a release despite being one of Ireland'a biggest selling singles ever.

Just a random TOP post:

08. 'Heathens'
67. 'Stressed Out'
74. 'Ride'
353. 'Car Radio'
472. 'Can't Help Falling In Love With You' heart.gif
588. 'House Of Gold'
1000. 'Lane Boy'
1397. 'Guns For Hands'

I'm sure these were higher at some point, but it's the first time I've done a quick Twenty One Pilots search (I was actually hoping to see if their cover of My Chemical Romance's 'Cancer' was available/appeared - which I'm not sure if it is) and SO happy to see GFH and CHFILWY are in the top 1500, particularly!

Calvin Harris could record audio of himself sneezing for 5 minutes flat and it would go to number one on iTunes, so number one is where he will be on iTunes. I don't know about the Official chart though, it seems like anything goes in that chart nowadays, I barely pay attention to it myself.

Serious question time...

Why is it bad for a popstar to be promoting a single on TV shows? Especially only their 2nd, TV performance! :\ Idgi.

Posted by: JosephStyles 15th September 2016, 08:06 PM

Yeah promotion is never a bad thing, it's only natural for someone to want people to hear their songs! (although I think at this stage, I'm finding You Don't Know Love's chart performance kinda amusing, it's not totally happening even with all the pushes they're giving it oops)

Posted by: mdh 15th September 2016, 08:06 PM

It's not bad, it's just that whenever Olly does some promo he shoots back up the chart leading to his bizarre chart run which is somewhat of a joke among a few - hence Pete's joke about his chart run. biggrin.gif

Yeah and what Joseph said, they are trying really hard to make it a hit :,)

Posted by: danG 15th September 2016, 08:11 PM

because it gives them an unfair advantage over artists who don't get to promote themselves on TV(??) unsure.gif

but yeah it doesn't make Olly Murs or his label desperate, I'm sure people would be moaning just as much if Olly didn't do any TV appearances!!

You Don't Know Love is becoming the 2016 equivalent of Black Magic in terms of live performances.

Love Me Like You had A LOT more performances tbh.

The fact that the Olly song falls away easily enough after the promo shows that it's not impacting with the general public.

Exactly - whereas the songs that were promo'd a lot (Black Magic as previously suggested) generally benefited from the promo and could actually stabilise. It's sad to see Olly underperform though.

A good chunk of Black Magic's performances came because it was such a big hit anyway I think - both X Factor performances last year and the BRITs!
