Get Outta My Way deserved top 10 :')

I honestly think if it had a better title it would be remembered as a classic.

Diamonds only peaking (!) at 44 and that being the highest its ever been is just crazy. I'm fascinated by how Rihanna's music and what she's known for continues to evolve even while she herself remains completely absent from the music industry. Despite her cool girl image Diamonds & Stay are two of my favourite of her tracks - she can really sell a moody ballad.

40 [54] = Taylor Swift = Style = 409pts
(194-145-156-54-40-)
[4th, 2015]

39 [274] = Arcade Fire = Reflektor = 418pts
(xx-xx-xx-xx-610-274-39-)
[24th, 2013; SF 9th]

38 [37] = xx = On Hold = 420pts
(101-51-37-38-)
[3rd, 2016]

37 [76] = Azealia Banks (feat Lazy Jay) = 212 = 421pts
(50-26-27-54-120-84-76-37-)
[2nd, 2012]

36 [67] = Lana Del Rey = Born to Die = 428pts
(104-119-189-26-19-29-67-36-)
[9th, 2012; SF 1st]

As we kick off the top 40 this year we say farewell to Taylor Swift who takes a 14 place climb this year with Style to its highest position to date. However, her climb is eclipsed by that of another song… The big story from this section is the climb for Arcade Fire’s Reflektor which got to the final for the first time this year and climbs from outside the top 200 to inside the top 40. Despite the big climb, there is still another Arcade Fire song to come, personally I much prefer Reflektor - its epic and brilliant. However, it’s definitely been a strong year for the group in general and its good to see new songs breaking into the final round and making an impact. Will be interesting to see if their success is replicated next year.

This section also sees big climbs for 212 and Born to Die, both songs have peaked higher in the past however they recover after taking drops over the last few years. Born to Die is the second highest Lana song with Video Games still to come. The only other song here is On Hold which drops just one place after reaching a new peak last year, it does however hold up very well year on year, however couldn’t quite manage another new peak this year.

What a fabulous section *.* I feel like I should be more into the Arcade Fire song than I actually am but the rest are firm favourites.

Reflektor has sounded so HUGE for years (and never drags even given its long run time). Pleased it's finally got a round of success here, I'd have never called it because of the low chart peak but if we ever had a year like this with strong indie support, pretty natural, 'Rebellion (Lies)' was often a hit when it used to be in this.

Everything Now is great but really weird to see it beating Reflektor.

?? What's wrong with the title? What else would it be called? laugh.gif

Woo for '212' being back in the top 40 for the first time in a while! Good to see 'Born To Die' rebounding again too. Would have been nice for 'On Hold' to get another new peak but holding pretty steady from last year is still good! And of course here for Arcade Fire getting double top 40 status.

Great to see '212' rebound so much, not as fussed about the rest of the section although 'Style' as Taylor's highest song is good to see.
I gave 'Reflektor' a listen for the first time in years recently and again it went over my head, don't get it but well done to them for going top 40 against the odds (and with 2 songs too).

A strong section there with four I voted for with significant points and Lana song I'm ambivalent towards. Style is a song I only became aware of this year, it's fab, a brilliant pop song. Love 212 too, a proper anthem I've never tired of.

For Arcade Fire, I definitely prefer Reflektor to Everything Now but good to see them both so high, Reflektor is a top 5 song of theirs - one of their true greats for me, and I think On Hold is The xx's best work, good to see its continuing popularity here.

Gutted every year Video Games is higher than BTD, but having said that, Trixie Mattel's recent country cover has brought me to appreciate it a little for the first time.

As for Get Outta My Way, it just doesn't sound like a 'classic' song title the way something like All The Lovers, Slow, or Spinning Around does.

Years & Years continue their run of falling and rebounding with 'King' now back in for its third year in the top 40 although still far from managing to go back in the top 20. It's pleasing to see this now again ahead of 'Shine' and with it getting a point from me this is about the right position for it. Arcade Fire chart 'Everything Now' 16 points and five places ahead of 'Reflektor' however the song did have 4 more supporters unsurprising given it has more cross appeal. It is likewise the first time the song has even gone top 200 so it looks like Arcade Fire gained a good few fans this year.

Dua Lipa has three tracks in the top 40 the first of which is 'Be The One' rising to a new peak of #33. It's a good year for her with it being her 2nd track to peak and with at least one more on the way (the new entry). 'Bad Romance' may be out but it's another great year for Gaga with her having 4 top 40 entries. 'The Edge Of Glory' is the first of these and the highest BTW era track, having a 2nd year top 40 after making a big jump last year. Finally Daft Punk get a 7th running year in the top 40 with 'Get Lucky' down to #31, very impressive. Maybe by the time it becomes ineligible for this contest they'll finally release something new..

I can't believe Arcade Fire have double top 40 presence, especially as the new material hasn't surfaced yet, but I'm not complaining, Reflektor especially as it's pretty inaccessible on the surface being over seven minute long, but it's a beautiful song and one of their best so I'm very pleased with its fans coming out of the woodwork now, I remember when it couldn't even qualify! It's a shame that Sprawl II couldn't follow them both (or maybe replace Everything Now as that isn't a huge favourite from them even if it is still great), it's my favourite from them and this is it's last year.

A shame to see Get Lucky take a dip though, still a classic

(major lmao at the suggestion of non-charting songs not being allowed, because y'know nothing is actually good unless it charts in the top 40 as we all know xx)

30 [28] Rihanna = Only Girl (In the World) = 448pts
(37-62-71-74-71-31-48-45-28-30-XX)
[4th, 2010]

29 [20] Dua Lipa = New Rules = 453pts
(10-20-29-)
[3rd, 2017]

28 [43] Jennifer Lopez (feat. Pitbull) = On the Floor = 454pts
(80-94-104-114-157-77-83-43-28-)
[9th, 2011; SF 11th]

27 [10] CHVRCHES = The Mother We Share = 457pts
(131-53-08-11-08-10-27-)
[9th, 2013; SF 2nd]

26 [23] Alan Walker = Faded = 459pts
(188-16-23-26-)
[5th, 2016]

Kicking off the top 30 is the 2nd highest Rihanna song; Only Girl (In the World). The song is in its final year and cannot quite reach a new peak as it dips 2 places. I’m actually surprised looking at the chart run that it hasn’t reached higher than 28th place which it claimed last year. However this is as far as its going to go as it wont be a contender next year. Also here is New Rules by Dua Lipa, the song drops 9 places and out of the top 20 for the first time. This year, New Rules is not the highest Dua song in the final as Don’t Start Now is still to come.

We’ve also got 2 further songs which take drops; Faded drops just 3 places however The Mother We Are tumbles out of the top 10 to 27. The song has had 4 years in the top 12, however this year it couldn’t quite muster the support in the final round. Finally at 28 and bucking the trend here is Jennifer Lopez as On the Floor takes a climb this year of 15 places to reach its highest position to date.

Ooh, that's a sign of a shakeup with The Mother We Share dropping, and not one I'd have called given good support for songs that often get similar votes to CHVRCHES. Shame as it's one of the very best in this final but four years in the top 12 is still an amazing feat for a song of its size.

boo Faded not winning (as my +30)

Surprised Only Girl has never been top 10!
