A few days late I know but I was thinking about the Christmas hits that charted this year and the fact that we had more Christmas songs in the Top 100 this year than ever before. So this led me to looking into which Christmas songs (and yes I've included the likes of Stay Another Day in my list) have charted in the last ten years and how well they did in each of those years and I came up with the following list.

The figures in red are the peak chart positions of the song in each year from 2010 to 2019. The figures in blue show how the song ranked amongst all the Christmas songs in each of the years from 2010 to 2019. (In 2017, Last Christmas and AIWFCIY both peaked at #2 in different weeks, hence they are shown as ranked joint #1 in that year).

It's quite interesting to see which songs are performing better as the years go on. In 2010, Slade peaked the 5th highest out of all the Christmas songs, but has been steadily dropping each year and in 2019 was down to 15th. Brenda Lee's ranking has remained pretty steady apart from in 2017 when she spiked for some reason (anyone know why?)

I wonder why 'The Power Of Love' doesn't chart every year in the same way that 'Stay Another Day' does?

A record 60 Christmas songs made the Top 100 in 2019, compared with 55 in 2018 and just 10 in 2010. Do we think that figure will keep rising over the next few years until the Christmas week Top 100 is made up almost entirely of Christmas songs? And will AIWFCIY or Last Christmas EVER get to #1?

Pretty sure playlist positioning accounts for Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree taking off. It's also like two minutes long which will work in its favour (people less likely to skip).

Frankie Goes to Hollywood's The Power of Love probably isn't Christmassy enough and doesn't suit Spotify playlists as much, plus Gabrielle Aplin's cover seems the go-to version (it charts under the old rules Top 200 even though it doesn't shift enough to reach the official Top 100).

I think the spike for Brenda Lee is cos Spotify started really pushing her from 2017 - they were the dominant platform back then whereas she dropped off a bit in 18/19 as Apple/Amazon started getting more market share (and they clearly don't push her as much).

Brenda Lee's Spotify weekly peaks through the years are:
2014: #56
2015: #91/#99
2016: #34
2017: #6
2018: #3
2019: #3

edit: for whatever reason 2015's was split between two versions

The most notable observation for me is how poorly 'Stay Another Day' performed this year - we can see it only peaked at #95 (compared with #36 and #35 the previous two years), making it only the 59th highest peaking Christmas song this year (compared with 24th and 28th the previous two years). It's one of my favourite "Christmas" songs so I'm not sure why it fell out of favour so sharply this year - maybe it just wasn't high on many Christmas playlists this year for whatever reason?

My observations:

'Fairytale Of New York' has peaked at #4 for the last four years running. Consistency!
As I noted a few weeks ago, Slade are continuing their decline by slipping to #20 this year.
I haven't quite worked out why Brenda Lee did much better than usual this year, although the same can be said for a number of others e.g. Chris Rea, Andy Williams.
Good to see 'One More Sleep' make the top 20 for the fifth year running, it will be touch and go next year I think.
'Feliz Nevidad' is clearly on its way to becoming a Christmas staple by peaking increasingly higher in each of the last 5 years. Hopefully top 20 next year!

Observations this year:

* 'Jingle Bell Rock' continues to gain in popularity and this year made the top 10 for the first time.
* 'Fairytale Of New York' continues to decrease in popularity and this year marks the fist time it's not in the top 5 Xmas songs, dropping all the way to #9 (and I'm not exactly sure why?)
* Shakin' Stevens suffers a similar fate and drops to #12 (it's always been in the top 10 before).
* Sadly, the Slade song also continues its rapid downward spiral, from 15th a couple of years ago to 25th this year.

I'm predicting that 'Feliz Navidad' will continue to grow in popularity and will be around 15th next year, Shaky will drop another couple of places and 'Jingle Bell Rock' will overtake Michael Bublé.
As Amazon continues to playlist new Christmas songs, perennial classics from The Darkness and Greg Lake will probably stop charting from next year.

Observations for 2023:
* Wizzard and Slade continue their steady decline, falling out of the top 20/30 most popular Christmas songs respectively for the first time.
* Greg Lake's 'I Believe In Father Christmas' failed to chart in 2023, despite appearing in the previous two years.
* Ariana Grande charted in the top 10 for the first time and will probably continue to do so now for the next few years.
* 82 different Christmas songs charted in 2023 (not necessarily all in the same week), which is unsurprisingly more than any other year.

2024 Forecasts

* 2000 Miles, Run Rudolph Run and the originals of Stay Another Day and Santa Baby could be top 40 for the first time since release year
* Blue Christmas will continue to grow
* Wonderful Christmas Time and One More Sleep now losing popularity
* Underneath The Tree should be top 10 for the first time

I'm guessing it's maybe because 10 songs peaked in the Top 9 this year but in different weeks, pushing that one down to 11? (unless of course I've misunderstood the question!)
