16TH FEBRUARY

“I Know Him So Well” is unmoveable at No 1 as it continues to improve week on week to 112,285 copies! The song is the second top 20 single from the “Chess” album after Murray Head’s “One Night In Bangkok” which peaked at No 12 at the end of 1984 and re-enters the chart at No 74 this week, that song has sold 195,313 compared to the 410,176 that “I Know Him So Well” has shifted so far.

Three re-issues that can be very happy with their performance now come from King who hold at No 2 on a very healthy sale of 93,381 (though without TOTP it could struggle this week), Bruce Springsteen who jumps 6-4 (50,626) and Prince who slides 5-6 (35,921). King and Bruce Springsteen can also celebrate on the album charts as well as they both climb to No’s 6 and No 1 there to get new peaks respectively!

With his second studio album due next month called “Dream Into Action” Howard Jones returns to the fray with “Things Can Only Get Better”. It’s his fifth top 10 single from six releases, an impressive hit rate from Jones, the song became his highest debuter last week at No 18 and now advances to No 7 (33,490).

Until now Kirsty MacColl’s sole UK chart entry was 1981’s No 14 hit “There’s A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears he’s Elvis” though of course her debut single “They Don’t Know” went on to become a No 2 hit in 1983 for Tracey Ullman. She’s now back with Stiff records after a stint with Polydor and a cover of Billy Bragg’s 1983 track “A New England” for which Bragg has written additional verses to flesh it out, the song rockets 13-10 (27,302).

Ashford & Simpson improve minimally in sales but are way off the pace despite improving 4-3 (68,136), also climbing are Art Of Noise 10-9 (31,263). Falling this week are Foreigner 3-5 (37,434) and Russ Abbot 7-8 (32,776)

1- I KNOW HIM SO WELL- Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson (112,285)
2- LOVE AND PRIDE- King (93,381)
3- SOLID- Ashford & Simpson (68,136)
4- DANCING IN THE DARK- Bruce Springsteen (50,626)
5- I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS- Foreigner (37,434)
6- 1999/ LITTLE RED CORVETTE- Prince (35,921)
7- THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER- Howard Jones (33,490)
8- ATMOSPHERE- Russ Abbot (32,776)
9- CLOSE TO THE EDIT- Art Of Noise (31,263)
10- A NEW ENGLAND- Kirsty MacColl (27,302)

Good to see the Art Of Noise here. That photo is the 1999 line-up which included Lol Creme but it's not surprising you couldn't find one from the 80s as they didn't pose for photos then, preferring to be faceless. I'm not convinced it's them performing the song on TOTP although the woman does look like Anne Dudley.

Apart from them, the songs in that top 10 by King, Bruce Springsteen, Foreigner, Howard Jones and Kirsty McColl are all good ones.

'A New England' by Kirsty McColl is very good, it with its less electronic form of new wave (with influence from jangle pop) I guess stood out from the abundance of more electronic tracks in the top 10.

Both the Billy Bragg original and Kirsty's version of 'A New England' are awesome! Although is it really so wrong to wish on space hardware...

23RD FEBRUARY

Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson consolidate their position at No 1 on the weekly charts and in the YTD charts as they record another good sale of 108,494 this week as the track moves over the half million mark. It's winning margin over King actually increased as the group hold at No 2 on a lesser sale of 82,467, but watch out for Ashford & Simpson who are holding up well at No 3 (74,477) are still increasing at retail week on week though unspectacularly.

Dead Or Alive are a group with more press than record sales thus far in their career thanks to the rather outspoken lead singer Pete Burns, their only UK hit so far was the cover of KC & The Sunshine Band’s 1975 No 4 hit “That’s The Way (I Like It)” which bowed out at No 22 last year. Burns’ first group Mystery Girl also contained Julian Cope and Pete Wylie who of course have gone onto greater things but Burns formed Dead Or Alive back in 1980 with the group attained some media attention in the wake of the success of Boy George and Marilyn which led Epic to signing them in 1983 though their first three singles all bombed. We arrive now at the group’s second album and the lead single from it “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” which has been lingering around the bottom of the charts moving 55-49-51-58-65-55-48-45-41-42-40-19-5 so far and sold 42,993 copies last week to smash the inertia of the top 5.

The only other new entry in the top 10 rests down at No 9 with the Commodores “Nightshift”. It’s their first hit since the departure of Lionel Richie in 1981 and is a tribute to some pretty famous singers no longer with us including Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, their last album “13” failed to produce any UK hit singles, a far cry from their late 70s heyday but now they seem back on track as “Nightshift” lifts 17-9 (28,900).

Bruce Springsteen holds at No 4 (60,078), Howard Jones rises 7-6 on an improved sale of 41,463 just above a fast moving Kirsty MacColl 10-7 (31,705) and even Art Of Noise continue their slow ascendance to the top 9-8 (30,736) but they cool at retail. Prince rounds off the top 10 dipping 6-10 (28,526).

1- I KNOW HIM SO WELL- Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson (108,494)
2- LOVE AND PRIDE- King (82,467)
3- SOLID- Ashford & Simpson (74,477)
4- DANCING IN THE DARK- Bruce Springsteen (60,078)
5- YOU SPIN ME ROUND (LIKE A RECORD)- Dead Or Alive (42,993)
6- THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER- Howard Jones (41,463)
7- A NEW ENGLAND- Kirsty MacColl (31,705)
8- CLOSE TO THE EDIT- Art Of Noise (30,736)
9- NIGHTSHIFT- The Commodores (28,900)
10- 1999/ LITTLE RED CORVETTE- Prince (28,526)

You Spin Me Round is great, very energetic, and not too poppy or cheesy like some Hi-NRG would go on to be.

Ha! indeed. If I recall correctly it was the FGTH releases in 84 that caused Gallup to put restrictions on the numbers of formats eligible for chart inclusion. I think previously there were no restrictions but I may be wrong there! Their 8 formats of "Two Tribes" helped get their 9 weeks at No 1

2ND MARCH

It struggled all week long before creating some clear water by the weekend and so “I Know Him So Well” completes a fourth week at the top but its sales dipped below the 100,000k mark to 78,693 just 7,361 ahead of a nicely improving Dead Or Alive, and with both scheduled to be on TOTP this week you have to favour a new chart topper imminently.

Prince Dips out of the top 10 this week with “1999/ Little Red Corvette” but fear not as he enters this week with “Let’s Go Crazy/ Take Me With U” which expands 27-9 (26,367). It’s already been a US chart topper last year and he’s hoping in the light of the success of his previous single that this track from the “Purple Rain” album can turn the trick for him here.

The Commodores rise 9-6 (40,494) but they’re the only success story from the remaining singles with most singles moving down a slot. They include King (2-3, 60,826), Ashford & Simpson (3-4, 53,193) and Bruce Springsteen (4-5, 46,478) who all make room for Dead Or Alive. Meanwhile Howard Jones (6-7, 37,094), and Kirsty MacColl (7-8, 28,475) dip to assist the Commodores climb and Art Of Noise drop 8-10 (25,602).

1- I KNOW HIM SO WELL- Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson (78,693)
2- YOU SPIN ME ROUND (LIKE A RECORD)- Dead Or Alive (71,332)
3- LOVE AND PRIDE- King (60,826)
4- SOLID- Ashford & Simpson (53,193)
5- DANCING IN THE DARK- Bruce Springsteen (46,478)
6- NIGHTSHIFT- The Commodores (40,494)
7- THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER- Howard Jones (37,094)
8- A NEW ENGLAND- Kirsty MacColl (28,475)
9- LET’S GO CRAZY/ TAKE ME WITH U- Prince (26,367)
10- CLOSE TO THE EDIT- Art Of Noise (25,602)

That top 2 is kinda diabolical biggrin.gif

I know he doesn't have many fans in here but poor Bryan Adams spent 4 weeks stuck at #11 with Run to You

9TH MARCH

Even as it tops the charts it looks like Dead Or Alive are running out of steam, but let’s look at the positives first. It’s the group first top 20 hit and finally means that they can claim to have arrived on the UK music scene, the second album is just being finished off and should be out in the next few months, it’s also the first chart topper for producers Stock/ Aitken and Waterman who are rapidly becoming in demand after helming Hazell Dean and Divine into the top 20 last year. The song has taken 15 weeks since its debut in the charts to go all the way to No 1 creating a new chart record, indeed the song was released before any of the three No 1 hits that preceded it entered the charts, it’s also the first No 1 song to mention the defining product in the music industry- the record.

Sales wise it did increase its tally, but only by 22% to 86,802 to bring its total to 277,134, it easily outpaced the outgoing chart topper “I Know Him So Well” with some ease as that sold 59,143, "I Know Him So Well" is now the biggest selling female duet in chart history with 656,506 sales so far.

Stephen Duffy is of course a founding member and the original vocalist of Duran Duran (he left the group in 1979 a year before they signed a record deal) Duffy went on to form several other groups including Tin Tin in 1982 with whom he released “Kiss Me” in late 1982 which peaked at No 155. He re-recorded the track for a solo release in 1984 where it was made available in limited copies before a full release this year, finally the song arrives in the top 10 at a third time of asking leaping 22-4 (41,854) which might make up slightly for walking out on the success he missed out on with the Durranies.

Top 5 in the US already Nile Rogers is back on production duties again to steer the new Madonna single “Material Girl” into the top 5 flying 24-5 (38,114) as it becomes her third top 10 single in total and second in a row from the “Like A Virgin” album. The album has only performed in a middling fashion thus far peaking at No 17 and selling 300,000 copies though it rebounds 37-23 this week, both single and album benefit from another eye catching promo video in which Madonna lifts the scene from “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” where Monroe sang “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend”- say what you like about her but she does make a good pop promo.

The Commodores almost caught Paige & Dickson but TOTP saw the duo create a safe buffer, nonetheless they leap 6-3 (49,827) to have just their second top 3 single of their long career, Prince also advances 9-7 (37,383) though it doesn’t look troubling the top slot. Four other tracks are on their way down, Ashford & Simpson collapse 4-6 (37,740), King abdicate 3-8 (33,864) Springsteen scurries 5-9 (31,943) and Howard Jones scarpers 7-10 (25,942)

1- YOU SPIN ME ROUND (LIKE A RECORD)- Dead Or Alive (86,802)
2- I KNOW HIM SO WELL- Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson (59,143)
3- NIGHTSHIFT- The Commodores (49,827)
4- KISS ME- Stephen “Tin Tin” Duffy (41,854)
5- MATERIAL GIRL- Madonna (38,114)
6- SOLID- Ashford & Simpson (37,740)
7- LET’S GO CRAZY/ TAKE ME WITH U- Prince (37,383)
8- LOVE AND PRIDE- King (33,864)
9- DANCING IN THE DARK- Bruce Springsteen (31,943)
10- THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER- Howard Jones (25,942)
