A draw in Switzerland would be a good result and should make us favourites to top the group.

First match of this two years tomorrow for me, been moved to much better seats due to lack of sales. Will make it nice and easy to get out too!
Looking forward to it, see how some of these players can do. The likes of Sterling, Henderson and Wilshere will be key, the latter needs to step up now. |

I hear Germany are losing to Argentina in the warm ups.
Didn't see the first half of the England match, I thought they be ahead against Norway, just turned over to see it goalless. Looks like I didn't miss much. |

Lots of talented players, always a mistake likely in the backline, turgid tactics, and Rooney being awful. |

They got the win in the end with a penalty, overall the game was a poor performance. I expected them to win that game with at least 3 goals against a team that never made the World Cup finals.

I know the game opened up more towards the end, but no surprise how much dangerous England looked with Sterling centrally. Need to build the team around him, not Rooney. |

Awful performance and I expect that to continue as long as Hodgson continues to build the side around Rooney. No way should he be guaranteed a place in the side on current form, but unfortunately the captaincy means he will be
No surprise that we looked more threatening once he'd gone off. I'd start Welbeck instead vs. Switzerland and play Sterling centrally where he's more influential |

Pragmatically you can't drop Rooney for a few games now he's captain. Might be worth trying the diamond on Monday (Jones; Wilshere, Henderson; Sterling; Rooney, Sturridge?) if nothing else than to keep a lid on Shaqiri. In the short term then we're going to persist with that vague 4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1 splodge then I'd actually drop Sturridge and play Sterling behind Rooney.

Almost impossible not to qualify. The group is ridiculously poor with the only other decent side being Switzerland. Top 2 go through and then even the 3rd side goes through to a play off round

England are 20th in the rankings and in their qualyfing group have Switzerland, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania and San Marino. Scotland are currently 28th in the rankings an we have Ireland, Germany, Poland, Georgia, Gibratlar in our group. I do think Scotland could manage third place and eventually qualify! |

Agree above, it's probably harder for us not to qualify, than it is to actually qualify. As bad as we I think we will finish second.
If we are going to persist with Rooney, then it's just ridiculous. He's out of form, runs in to bad spaces and the defenders are never on the front foot. I know he's our 'star' player right now, but Sterling is just so dangerous in the middle. Thing is I don't think he can drop either Sturridge or Rooney. I don't mind what he plays, but he just needs to play Sterling centrally. |

I agree with all the above, I do think Rooney has passed his sell by date, Strictly Dancing needs him.

Sturridge was just never allowed to me the main striker at Chelsea. I don't think he's selfish at all, sure there are times when he makes the wrong decisions, but Ronaldo/Suarez/Messi/Ibra do this too, but the difference is they're in the next class above Sturridge. The problem England has is no-one creates space for the forward players. Sturridge is at times so good because obviously he can play on the shoulder of the last defender, but also because he is so goo at finding space. For England we don't really have any midfield runners, and the wide players are predictable (one attacking, one more defensive minded). The team needs to be built around Sterling though. He is the one player in this generation for England, that has the potential to be in the same bracket as Ronaldo/Messi/Suarez. I don't think I'm jumping the gun here, the lad has everything in it to become that good if he applies himself. |
