Just thought I'd start a new topic to help celebrate what is, in my opinion, my favourite year for pop music. Pop had it ALL. It felt like all types of genres were smashing and we were all being given some absolutely stellar songs to celebrate.
At various points, I will hopefully boost the topic with songs that we can all talk about and whether we liked and disliked them etc.. certain memories attached to those specific songs and whatever else! To kick us off: Alexandra Burke - Bad Boys (feat. Flo-Rida): --- Agnes - Release Me: Do you have any certain memories of these songs? Did you like them? |

I LOOOOOVE that Alexandra song so much. It still bangs so hard, 10 years later! The video is brilliant too! Choreo without twerking *.* It's such a masterpiece and one I believe should've propelled her to success in the states </3
'Release Me' is so good too! I remember being surprised that this smashed at the time because a huge European hit doesn't always translate into a huge hit over here, so to see it get massive success was exciting to witness and seeing it climb on iTunes the way it did.. <3 |

Both of those are absolutely excellent songs!! Bad Boys and Fight For This Love well and truly dominated the end of 2009 for me - in a time where I'd kinda drifted from chart music, they still gripped me
I came to Agnes a few years late (I was aware of it in 2009 but didn't pay it much attention!) but it really is a truly spectacular pop song!! You don't get pop music like this nowadays. |

I'll always be fond of 2009 as it was my first year following the UK charts, otherwise both of those songs would've passed me by completely! 'Release Me' was a massive fave but 'Bad Boys' wasn't, Alexandra didn't really win me over until 'All Night Long' and 'Start Without You' the following year.

I found myself not too fond of 2009 at the time (a lot of my fave songs flopping ) but looking back it was pretty great. I was watching series 3 of Gavin and Stacey just last week and the scenes of them clubbing in Cardiff with Remedy by Little Boots playing took my right back to the days I actually went clubbing of which 2009 had many.

I remember when Bad Boys came out and I was SHOOK, I was expecting her to do a Leona-esque R&B ballad which would have been fine but she came out with that absolute banger *.*

I've never been a fan of 'Bad Boys'! A pretty tacky song that's aged horribly. Much preferred 'Broken Heels'!
I always liked 'Release Me' but it took years for me to fully appreciate how much of a stormer of a pop song it actually is. I absolutely love it now |

Indeed the best year for music in recent memory. Eurovision was also fantastic that year, with the UK coming top five even and half of the DNQs being as good as the mostly excellent finalists.
Here is my top 100 from that year, all excellent tracks with a nice mix of chart stuff, the unstoppable Gaga/RedOne period, Eurovision, Melodifestivalen and a great BJSC year (especially for my entries, which smashed left, right and centre *.*). 1. Agnes - Release Me 2. Alcazar - Stay The Night 3. Anna Abreu - Music Everywhere 4. Lady Gaga - Bad Romance 5. Alexander Rybak - Fairytale 6. Keri Hilson, Kanye West & Ne-Yo - Knock You Down 7. Jade Ewen - It's My Time 8. Cascada - Evacuate The Dancefloor 9. The Sound of Arrows - M.A.G.I.C. 10. Lady Gaga - Poker Face 11. Little Boots - Remedy 12. Vanessa Amorosi - This Is Who I Am 13. Malena Ernman - La Voix 14. Tone Damli Aaberge - Butterflies 15. Beautiful Small Machines - Robots In Love 16. Hafdis Huld - Kongulo 17. Madonna - Celebration 18. Shakira - She Wolf 19. Taylor Swift - Love Story 20. Cassandra Steen feat Adel Tawil - Stadt 21. Caroline Af Ugglas - Snälla, Snälla 22. Owl City - Fireflies 23. Agnes - Love Love Love 24. The Saturdays - Issues 25. Michael Bublé - Haven't Met You Yet 26. Florence + The Machine - Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) 27. Cheryl Cole - Fight For This Love 28. Emilia - You're My World 29. Alcazar - Thank You 30. Röyksopp feat Robyn - The Girl & The Robot 31. Caroline Jönsson - By My Side 32. Jody - Wind It 33. Blänk feat Young Ivy - I'm Going For Your Brother 34. Pixie Lott - Boys & Girls 35. Tinchy Stryder feat Amelle - Never Leave You 36. Example - Watch The Sun Come Up 37. The Veronicas - Untouched 38. Cheryl Cole feat will.i.am - 3 Words 39. Lovebugs - The Highest Heights 40. Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You 41. Alicia Keys - Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart 42. Waldo's People - Lose Control 43. Mans Zelmerlow - Hope & Glory 44. Yohanna - Is It True? 45. Hurts - Wonderful Life 46. Mika - We Are Golden 47. Brinck - Believe Again 48. The Saturdays - Just Can't Get Enough 49. Uh Huh Her - Not A Love Song 50. Queensberry - Hello (Turn Your Radio On) 51. Sharon Corr - It's Not A Dream 52. Cascada - Hold On 53. Alphabeat - The Spell 54. Lady Gaga & Beyonce - Telephone 55. Jordin Sparks - Battlefield 56. Marit Larsen - If A Song Could Get Me You 57. Lights – Ice 99. Benny Andersson Band – Story Of A Heart 100. Tinchy Stryder feat Taio Cruz – Take Me Back That top 15 or so is unbelievably good, all among my all-time favourites. Butterflies was so unlucky to have come up against Fairytale in Melodi Grand Prix, I think Norway could have won Eurovision either way...I really think Tone Damli could have challenged Yohanna for the win. Also forgot how unexpectedly good Haven't Met You Yet was. And Wind It!...what an entry that was! This post has been edited by gooddelta: 27th August 2019, 10:41 AM |

Sounds great, there are lots of lost gems from 2009.
It was only typing that out (41-100 were unpublished until today *.*) that it properly hit me just what an incredible year it was! This post has been edited by gooddelta: 27th August 2019, 08:47 PM |

Yes this was a very grand year for modern pop. I remember not being hugely impressed by the Charts in general at the time (aside from the odd highlights like The Prodigy's comeback) but there really was such a diverse portfolio of brilliance that mostly has aged very well. Pop songs especially really stood out as big musical moments from the 21st century thus far.

I must admit 2009's always been one of my favourite years for pop. I had just started university and was living away from home for the first time so I feel quite fondly about a lot of the music from that time as it reminds me of nights out at the student's union and getting my first taste of independence and I have some great memories.
Songs and bands that particularly stood out for me around that time: The Saturdays' first and second albums (they played our Christmas Ball at the Student's Union that year), Annie's album 'Don't Stop' I loved as well. I loved Shakira 'She Wolf', Taio Cruz 'Break Your Heart', Chipmunk 'Oopsy Daisy'. JLS' first few singles 'Beat Again' and 'Everybody In Love' and their album were favourites of mine. I loved Lily Allen, she bought her second album 'It's Not Me It's You' out that year and I still love that record, especially 'The Fear', really powerful track. I loved Little Boots and Frankmusik. I loved Mr Hudson and Kanye West 'Supernova', Calvin Harris 'I'm Not Alone'. I could go on and on listing but just a great year all round. |

2009 also saw Booty Luv continue their careers... barely. But they released this ALMIGHTY SHOULDA BEEN A MULTI-WEEK #4-er BANGER.
WHAT a song! --- I shall also add Anna Abreu this time. Music Everywhere is such a fantastic pop song. It went on to be a big success in BJSC! A storming pop chorus and hook. --- Black Eyed Peas literally ruled the US BBH100 with something ridiculous like 25 or 26 weeks at #1 with Boom Boom Pow & I Gotta Feeling. The latter is one of the most played songs on radio I believe and I still hear it (without fail) whenever I go out! BBP people know it, but don't talk about it anymore. The hold they had on the US charts back then is insane! --- American Alt-Pop-Rock band All American Rejects released their biggest hit this year too. 'Gives You Hell' went on to be a massive WW hit. One that I hear people reference quite a bit nowadays! |

I used to blast all these songs out while driving (apart from All American Rejects but it's a good song). BEPs were on such good form, I Gotta Feeling is horribly overplayed now but it's still a tune.

Release Me is brilliant. Bad Boys I am not a fan of sadly.
September - Can't Get Over hasn't been mentioned yet on here but that is another good nostalgic song from 2009. Girls Aloud also released their best song imo that year, 'Untouchable'. This post has been edited by TheSnake: 29th August 2019, 04:54 PM |
