Shame it couldn't stay in top 100 in the UK. Maybe the tour will help again next year.

One year ago, Lady Gaga released her 5th album 'Joanne'. Marking a stark change of pace and image, the album stripped away the electro-pop that made her famous and presented a more country-tinged, acoustic, soft-rock vibe. With gorgeous ballads, barn-yard stompers and everything in between, it's fair to see it's one of her most diverse albums.

We will be celebrating one year of the Joanne era over the course of the next short while in this forum, but for now let's discuss the album itself and how you feel towards it. Was it the right decision from Gaga to release an album as personal and different as this? Do you still return to the album often? What are your thoughts ohmy.gif

Chart performance

Joanne managed a #1 peak in the US (her fourth there - becoming the only female to have 4 #1s on the chart this decade) and was top 3 in the UK. It was the 22nd best-selling album of 2016, selling one million copies that year. It had a huge sales spike following on from the iconic Superbowl performance, the Five Foot Two documentary and has continued to sell well since.

Critical reception

Joanne currently has a score of 67/100 on metacritic and received favourable reviews from many.

Year end list:

Billboard 50 Best Albums of 2016: 32
Digital Spy 20 Best Albums of 2016: 9
NME NME's Albums of the Year 2016: 20
Rolling Stone 20 Best Pop Albums of 2016: 7

I love the album so much! Listened to it yesterday... again. Only songs I don't ADORE as such are Come to Mama and Dancin' in Circles. The former is fun but a bit boring sonically, the latter feels pretty rushed and basic

I went through a period of being over the album but over the past few months it's really cemented itself as a beauty. So deeply personal and i'm glad she seems much happier making it than she did with ARTPOP. It will forever be tinged with sadness, with what it means to her and the pain she is going through while living through the era but it's also an album of resilience and fighting through adversity and for that reason I think it all pieces together perfectly as an era.

There are some songs that I really can't stand (Just Another Day / Come to Mama oops) but on the whole it's a lovely listen and i'm SO happy we got it. Also insanely proud of the success the era has given her <3

Oh I forgot about Just Another Day (as it's on the deluxe), yeah that's a dud.

Very much a grower of an album too. Grown to really appreciate this and found her voice is displayed beautifully. A huge step up from ARTPOP for me.

Dancin In Circles the huge hit that never was sad.gif

Joanne vinyl is currently £13.95 on Amazon UK if anyone is interested - it's the first time I've seen it as cheap as that, usually it's £20+

Just listening to Elton John on Spotify and the piano melody in 'Bennie & The Jets' is reminding me of 'Hey Girl'.
