Doesn't Google skew your results based on your previous searches though? Oh well, I reserve the right to recycle that joke if anyone says they don't know who A are. Or the XX Teens. Yes, it does. And your location too (e.g. someone in Canada who searches Dave will get different results to someone in the UK). Probably other things as well, it's a badly kept secret that all the big Internet companies share their information about users/IP addresses with each other in exchange for large sums of money. For example, if your online activity suggests you are obsessed with the TV channel called Dave, that would probably be the first thing that comes up when you search it on any major search engine. DuckDuckGo is a good search engine if you want more "neutral" and uncensored results. Googling Dave still brings up mostly results about him (a couple about the TV channel, but otherwise it's all reviews of his album and his social medias). Using just Dave as his stage name was a bold move but he's established enough now to pull it off. I get mostly Dave the artist too, but also a lot about some political film from the early 90's called "Dave". I agree though, that's it's a risky stage name. If I were a music artist I would choose something more unique where you know if people search you it will come up. But nothing with symbols or weird spellings, I think things like 3OH!3 or XO Tour Llife are risky in a different way lol. This post has been edited by Eric_Blob: 10th March 2019, 10:25 PM |

It does but I checked in an incognito tab to remove that bias and it wasn't really any different.
A's Wikipedia article is still the top search result if you search for 'a band' as well (although not just the letter 'A'), Google is smarter than you'd think x |

It actually gets pretty annoying sometimes. Apparently the algorithm is so complicated (and uses Artificial Intelligence) that none of the staff who work there know exactly how it works anymore. For the record, I notice little difference between using a private or incognito window in general. A better idea to test what the average person in the UK would be seeing might be to go to a public library computer and use that, although I do agree with you Dave (the artist) would probably be the main result at this point, but since all of us here use a pop music forum we can't really be 100% sure our results aren't being skewed. The 'impossible to Google' thing regarding musicians is always way overstated. Almost every single one of them can be solved by just adding 'band' or 'singer' as long as you know how to spell their name. The only ones I can think of that are a genuine concern are BOY ('boy music group' works though) and !!! if you don't know it's pronounced chk chk chk (but '3 exclamation marks band' works anyway).

Tbh the fact that there are people who don’t know Dave shows that Funky Friday was that forgettable of a #1

They will know though, it got 5 stars on Guardian so the Mercury Prize nomination is inevitable.

Ok so if #1 on charts or Mercury Prize (possibly) don't make you know the artist, wonder WHAT does? A song thread here on Buzzjack?

Mercury Prize has zero impact
Being #1 in the #1 sure has, unless you live under a rock |
