But there are 25 new entries in the album top 40 (Q4 bonanza) so maybe it's just congestion.

I'm not really a fan of it, but really surprised Solange is down in the 40s with all the rave reviews.

Meanwhile Craig David is heading for number 1 album in a chart with Radiohead being the only non-new-entry in the top 10.

Robbie might not chart as well. He should just release his Graham Norton story instead.

Weeknd's pretty abject False Alarm is probably not going to chart next week. Let's hope the album is more like Starboy.

I'm assuming the Radiohead album in Top 10 is A Moon Shaped Pool? What caused that surge? ohmy.gif

Posted by: girl_from_oz 1st October 2016, 11:28 AM

Wonder how much Craig David is ahead, Shires could beat him to number one, expect they'll sell well physically. If there are 9 new enteries in the top 10, they probably are- Craig David, Van Morrison, Shires, Slaves, Banks, Pixies, Bon Iver, Opeth, Deacon Blue and possibly Eric Clapton instead of Opeth

Craig David should easily be #1, the comeback of the year!

The vinyl release, such an odd chart run laugh.gif

Great for Craig David, I wonder if The Shires will sell more than Ward Thomas despite peaking lower, I've always felt The Shires are slightly more successful so it's weird the latter got the #1.

Ah right! tongue.gif Tbf a staggered release for each album format seems to have worked wonders for them as they clearly have fans who will buy all 3 and it's really helped their longevity with this album. I thought it would collapse again after its second week at #1, but it has held up much better than I anticipated.

I'd so laugh if they returned to #1 for a third week! laugh.gif

Posted by: Hassaan 1st October 2016, 12:35 PM

Rather amusingly Robbie's new single has sampled The Apprentice theme tune! (I know that's not where the music originates from but just go with it).

James Arthur to hold onto #1 again? I think Craig David should get the #1 album but I wonder if sales will be any better than last week (or the whole year gone so far).

Posted by: slowdown73 1st October 2016, 12:49 PM

Although I'm not really a fan a James Arthur, I'd rather he stay at no1 than give Niall whatever his surname is a number one single. Good news re. Craig David. As for Robbie, his new music isn't anything fantastic so I think he will struggle.

It has been a Release strategy that has had the chart position in mind - different to other recent Albums from Radiohead/Thom Yorke. Saw a recent Interview with Thom Yorke where he has clearly had enough of pioneering Different Release strategies (eg Torrent releases, Releases from own website, Pay as much as you like for download etc).
160k Sales so far is still an underperformance for me (even though it has made it to Top twice), hope it stays in Top 100 in the run-in to Christmas as it is shaping up to be one of the Albums of The Year.

Craig David has done so well to turn his career around. Im not a huge fan but i admire his comeback and i hope he stays album number 1. Radiohead have really done well with how they have handled the release in the album each time it fades away it makes a big comeback due to various types of releases. I know overall its sales are lower than their previous albums but in todays climate i think its doin well and it should pick up sales over Christmas.

Surprised with the promo she has done that she has not had much impact on the charts - They have reduced 'Glory' to £6.99 on iTunes and it's not Top 40 (Currently #44). Bit disappointing that the most she is going to get from this is maybe a 1 week in the Top 75 album charts.

Craig David's live set this summer has been amazing as well, I imagine it has caught a whole new generation of fans. He was the best thing at Bestival and amusingly there were some young teens in front of me in the crowd who knew all the words to 'When the Bassline Drops' and 'Ain't Giving Up' etc. but had no idea what 'Fill Me In' and '7 Days' were!

Seems odd they didn't recognise 'Fill Me In' or '7 Days'! Whenever I go out, they often get played and everyone knows the words and I'm sure they got played even before his big comeback. I don't even get the impression that people like them for just nostalgic reasons; they both sound pretty fresh in a club environment. I'm guessing if by young teens you mean 13/14, then they're too young to go to clubs, but I'd have still thought they'd know those songs from elsewhere.

Craig David has to be the comeback of the year. Amazing how well he's done. He's even on the front page of the latest issue of Music Week!

Posted by: girl_from_oz 3rd October 2016, 12:17 PM

Craig David has done well, but I think he was on a couple of singles last year, I remember him being on the X-Factor final, so I still think he has to take runner up in comeback of the year behind Rick Astley

Posted by: Ðøßßø 3rd October 2016, 12:21 PM

Ah, but has Rick Astley cracked the top 10 on the Singles chart this year?

Posted by: pippa 3rd October 2016, 02:21 PM

Rick Astley going number 1 and having such a steady chart run out does Craig David's comeback for me. That said, i think both have done brilliant. Its the year of male comebacks, Craig David, Rick Astley and now James Arthur.

I want Matt Cardle to join that list as he is so deserving of it.

Posted by: JosephStyles 3rd October 2016, 02:23 PM

I don't think Craig David and Rick Astley can really be compared tbh kink.gif Craig is surely going to be more of a singles artist overall and Rick is most definitely an album artist, hence why he's not had any singles chart success. Both have had pretty huge comebacks in their own areas I'd say! Really depends what age range we're talking about I think.

Craig is proving to be both a singles and albums artist seeing as he's leading the way in the mids with his album and has racked up 3 silver selling singles too recently.

If I'm honest I'm surprised she isn't - I was hoping/expecting her Jonathan Ross exposure would push her safely above the line :/. I feel as though she needs to release a second single to keep the album relevant (because an album always benefits from a single doing well, take twenty one pilots for example) biggrin.gif

I'd imagine that a second single would struggle to go T100.

Posted by: danG 4th October 2016, 10:49 AM

Even T200 would be a struggle for Britney, no matter how much promo she does if people don't like her new songs they won't buy them.

There's a bit more to it than that. The simple fact she can't get support from anywhere, there's only so much small promo boosts can do.

Just a query! I've noticed that Robbies new track - party like a Russian is no1 on the video chart on iTunes. Does this contribute to the chart at all? What does contribute these days?

It doesn't count I'm afraid! I expect it wouldn't add more than a few sales even if it did though, I doubt many people download music videos on iTunes. The only things to count are song downloads and audio streams!

Galantis outside Top 40 sad.gif

Where's Shawn Mendes now?

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th October 2016, 01:41 PM

Galantis are #42 sad.gif

Shawn is #14 with Treat You Better, #47 with Mercy and #15 with Illuminate!

Yes at Solange rising, would love to see it top 20 by end of week.

I meant the album, great to see that back in the Top 15. I forgot he had singles in the chart heehee.gif

Solange climbing is great, but with sales so low 1,000 sales could make the difference in a number 20 album and number 45 album these days.

Damn it...I am surprised that actually didn't manage to get inside top 100 when it was top 40 on itunes at one point. Oh well.

Goooo craig david!

Posted by: Scene 4th October 2016, 06:04 PM

Didn't expect Solange to climb. ohmy.gif Such a shame True never went top 40 but I guess sales were far higher back at the end of 2012.

just inside the top 100!

Posted by: Scene 4th October 2016, 10:32 PM

Solange seems to be blowing up on iTunes worldwide. She's #1 on iTunes in the U.S. and currently at #4 in the UK. I'm expecting her to keep rising each day in the midweeks.

Posted by: mr_pmt 4th October 2016, 10:50 PM

Ariana could theoretically make #4 this week? That's brilliant.

Surprised with the promo she has done that she has not had much impact on the charts - They have reduced 'Glory' to £6.99 on iTunes and it's not Top 40 (Currently #44). Bit disappointing that the most she is going to get from this is maybe a 1 week in the Top 75 album charts.

Yet they will interview her twice in the space of a month. wacko.gif

Posted by: danG 5th October 2016, 10:11 AM

well she is still big enough of a name for Radio 1 to want to interview/get her on as a guest, but she's seen more as a celebrity than a music artist (don't believe me? look up Britney Spears news, barely any articles about her actual music) and they're really not interested in her new music.

Posted by: Bjork 5th October 2016, 10:45 AM

sad but true
that she couldn't sing a single note in the carpool karaoke thing didn't help her credibility as singer...

Have you actually watched it? If so, you'd have seen that she sings plenty in it unsure.gif

Sadly people do seem to focus more on her celebrity status rather than her music, which is a shame as this is her best album in almost 10 years at the very least imo.

Posted by: Jonjo 5th October 2016, 10:52 AM

Also the album did go top 40 on iTunes with the Jono Ross performance and the discounted price.

Posted by: Joe. 5th October 2016, 10:53 AM

Yeah, she's a huge ratings puller, so people will jump at the chance to interview her etc. But she could have released Uptown Funk and still radio 1 wouldn't play it.

And Bjork, she sang Baby, Oops, Make Me and Womanizer on Carpool. Did you watch it?

Posted by: Bjork 5th October 2016, 10:56 AM

I mean, corden was doing all the singing she was barely moving her lips just kinda talking more than singing, that's not what I call singing, even J Lo did sing more than Britney

That's not "not singing a single note" though. https://youtu.be/pSd9hiBGoE0?t=508 see here, she's properly singing.

I use the dictionary description: "to use your voice to make musical sounds in some form of tune". It's not meant to be some big live production, it's karaoke in a car.

Posted by: pippa 5th October 2016, 03:44 PM

Britney has never really had a good name for actually singing. Miming yes but never singing.

NO OTHER SALES INFO

Posted by: JosephStyles 5th October 2016, 05:09 PM

Niall was the 9th biggest seller in yesterday's update (no idea for today) but he's stable on iTunes and climbing on Spotify so I expect #9 is where he'll stay!

Posted by: Scene 5th October 2016, 05:11 PM

The gaps between 2-3 and 4-5. ohmy.gif ohmy.gif I hope Starboy snatches the #2.

Solange at #19 is great - climbing 10 spots in two days. Hopefully she can sneak into the top 10 by Friday.

Posted by: Mart!n 5th October 2016, 05:12 PM

Just before anyone asks for other info, we don't have any, sadly just a top 40 today, unless something comes our way later.

Posted by: danG 5th October 2016, 06:25 PM

[Hadji]At this rate, The Weeknd will be officially number 2 this Friday.[/Hadji] cheer.gif

If Niall Horan had his 5,000 odd sales from last Thursday as part of this week it could secure the top 10 placement for him now.

Posted by: JosephStyles 5th October 2016, 07:26 PM

I don't think Niall will struggle to stay top 10, he was a fair bit ahead of Calum Scott at #10 in the Tuesday midweeks and was outselling him too.

Well no, they're likely to both be top 10 kink.gif Niall is #9 and Calum is #10!

It's a shame that a top 10 debut (kinda) is being made out to be a bad thing for Niall, so few people have managed it this year so for anyone to achieve that, it's fantastic.

Ariana just 296 copies behind Calvin. She should knock him out of the top 4 by Friday

Posted by: mr_pmt 5th October 2016, 08:12 PM

Hopefully The Weeknd and Ariana can grab #2 and #4 respectively, I'll be really pleased with that!

Posted by: ___∆___ 5th October 2016, 08:21 PM

So much glee at Niall only making Top 10?! We all know how obscenely difficult it is to go Top 10 with sales and streams in week 1 so it's a huge achievement - I'm sure many ex m-boyband members would kill for the same at the moment with Nathan (The Wanted) missing the Top 100 this week and Aston (JLS) missing the Top 200 last week!
