QUOTE(BillyH @ Nov 1 2019, 03:04 PM) *
It seems bizarre to think that I don't remember hearing this song at all until about 1999-2000 - it was big the year it was released (when I was slightly too young to be following chart music), but for most of the 1990s the kings of the Christmas songs were very much Slade and Wizzard, as they had been 20 years earlier. When it became the first song I downloaded on mp3 back in 2002, it still felt like an obscure forgotten classic that you'd only occasionally see on the odd music channel if they were having a festive marathon.

I feel like 'Love Actually' (released November 2003) followed by the download boom was what got this very much onto the A-list, eventually ruling above everything by the end of that decade and into the next. Similar to how Fairytale of New York seemed to gain a lot more attention following two events - Kirsty MacColl's sad death in 2000, and the high-profile physical reissue of the song in 2005 which reached #3.

This is how I remember it too! Like you, I was too young when it came out (I was 6 and paid no attention to celebrities/music/charts), so it passed me by that year. I don't really have any recollection of hearing it throughout the 90s either! I can't remember when I first heard it, but it must have been in advance of Love Actually because I remember knowing the song when I saw that movie. I agree that its inclusion in Love Actually seemed to be a turning point in the song being regarded as something of a classic!

wub.gif I really hope they are able to reset it! If they can pull that off, then I think #1 would absolutely be in the bag.

I fear that the physicals won't arrive before Christmas day, but from a chart perspective I am glad about that timing!

Can we just take a moment to appreciate her social media? This is great rotf.gif wub.gif -

Would be great if this Christmas classic got to No.1.

Wouldn't mind if it was Wham either and Mariah next year.

Hopefully if it's got a cassette and vinyl release it will also get a rest and get streamed and finally get that number 1 it deserves!

I definitely first heard it in the late 90s, every year the video was on TOTP2. Local radio used to hammer it at Christmas too particularly in the early 00s. I also remember them playing Samantha Mumba’s woeful version. I guess it may have had more uptake from Love Actually but I didn’t notice the difference. I always liked it but I didn’t have it on any compilation until Christmas Hits in 2004. But I think I only realised how generally popular it was in 2007 when it could rechart.

I do remember us going crazy in a club the Summer before when the DJ announced that it was 6 months until Christmas and they played a mashup of this, the pogues, Slade and Wizzard which are my favourite Christmas songs.

I think it depends on age tbh, most people born early 80's and onwards will say that the song has always had a presence since it's release. When I think back to radio in the late 90s, this song as well as Fairytale of New York, Christmas Wrapping, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday and Merry Xmas Everybody are the standouts that got heavy play. And the music video was always on MTV and The Box with the likes of East 17 and all the other classics.

People like to credit Love Actually with it's re-emergence when it's simply just down to the song being made available to purchase as an MP3. It's peaks on the download chart: #5 2004, #2 2005 and #2 2006 and had it been allowed to chart in the latter year it would have been top 10 on the official charts.

"It's so funny, somebody was just asking me, 'What were you doing 25 Christmases ago?' " says Carey, 49. "I would probably say somebody was giving me a bottle and they were singing me a sweet lullaby Christmas tune. Because I was just one year old, so I don't know!"

"It's very much like I live in the land of the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus," she adds wryly. "I don't acknowledge time, I don't know what it is. I rebuke it!"

Funny to see this clip from 1994 where she's asked if she hopes one of her Christmas songs will go on to be considered a classic. That certainly happened heart.gif

It hasn't been reset so it'll be down to the fans to get it to #1. The cassette and vinyl are still available on her UK shop https://mariahcareyshopuk.com/

How can she get reset? Would a remake qualify as a reset or?

The label need to request it but the main thing is a 25% surge in streams however this may not be given because it’s over 3 years old... Tbh I doubt she’ll need to come off ACR
