Wow two different commentaries to read, like it!

Delighted at that huge climb for Jubel, and impressive consistency for Miami 2 Ibiza! I really thought that would fall this year, glad it didn’t!

Hahaha at two sets of commentary arriving in the exact same minute, what are the chances. (It's kinda my fault cos I told Iz Sam was meant to be doing it but I wasn't sure if she actually was kink.gif)

Anyway:

140 *** 135 3.971 Clean Bandit - Solo (feat. Demi Lovato) [2018] (140)

125 179 144 4.235 Lorde - Perfect Places [2017] (179-125)
124 240 144 4.235 Ten Walls - Walking With Elephants [2014] (475-291-428-240-124)
123 81 146 4.294 Avicii vs. Nicky Romero - I Could Be The One [2013] (295-309-434-297-81-123)
122 334 147 4.324 Kanye West - All Of The Lights [2011] (172-220-85-20-236-154-334-122)
121 282 147 4.324 Tove Lo - Stay High (feat. Hippie Sabotage) [2014] (178-188-163-282-121)

The first four songs in this section all had the same number of points in the semi with two being retiring songs from 2009 and two being fresh new arrivals beginning their own dreams of years of ROTD positions - although the two older ones for some reason took quite a few years to ever make any impact in ROTD despite being two of the very best songs of the year. The Prodigy's biggest hit of the 21st century, 'Omen' (prominently featuring the vocals of Keith Flint, RIP) goes out on a big high of #137 after never previously cracking the top 350, while we also say goodbye to Paramore's banging banger 'Ignorance' which is down a bit from last year but still easily marks its second best performance. Those two new arrivals are Clean Bandit & Demi Lovato's #1 hit collaboration which is something about a quacking duck or something, I don't really get it, and the second best top 10 hit single by a Lithuanian dance producer in this section, Dynoro's competent take on BJSC hit 'In My Mind' with a sample from Gigi D'Agostino which finally gave him a UK hit years and years after his several European smashes never crossed over here for some reason.

Elsewhere here it's nearly all climbers, although two songs exit the top 100 here, the biggest drop for La Roux's 'Bulletproof' which takes a dive after 5 straight years in the top 100 and followed by Avicii & Nicky Romero's highly overrated 'I Could Be The One' (RIP again tho). There's also a modest dropoff for probably the best regarded early Little Mix track 'DNA'. Everything else here is up year on year - 'Omen' was the biggest climber but the runner up goes to a similarly great song, Ellie Goulding's 2nd best song 'Guns And Horses' which may have gone out far too early in her survivor poll but puts in its second best ROTD performance to date, let's get it in the top 100 for its sendoff next year. Also re-entering the top 200 from outside the top 300 are Galantis' only good song, Sia's excellent 'Elastic Heart' which is having a rather elastic chart run to date basil.gif and Kanye West's 'All Of The Lights' which remarkably is a former top 20 finisher. Martin Garrix's instrumental-ish #1 'Animals' zooms into the top 200 for surprisingly the first time (even more surprisingly, it was completely absent from the 2017 ROTD), as does the entirely instrumental 'Walking With Elephants' by Ten Walls, the best top 10 hit single by a Lithuanian dance producer in this section (we won't talk about Ten Walls as a person but the song still slaps x). Another great song getting a new peak is Tove Lo's 'Stay High', known outside the UK as 'why the fuck was this obscure remix the version of 'Habits' that was a big hit in the UK' (it is the better version of the song tho), which spent its first three years in the lower quarter of the top 200 before dipping out but is now back with a vengeance. One other song here hits a new peak, Lorde's 'Perfect Places' putting in a solid rise to #125, I maintain the unpopular opinion that this is her only single that isn't really that great (I do like it but it's one of the weakest songs on 'Melodrama' for me).

Finally, we have another climbing Taylor Swift track 'I Know You Were Trouble.' which doesn't quite make a top 100 return but is making its way back, a very small climb for The Saturdays' 'Ego' and a bigger climb for Tinie Tempah's 'Pass Out' rebounding into the top 200 (both songs heading for their last hurrah next year), an even smaller climb for David Guetta & Kelly Rowland's heavily overrated #1 hit which is on its last hurrah now having had a pretty decent run with 7 out of 10 top 200 finishes, and HAIM's 'The Wire' rebounding to its second best finish ever after somewhat inexplicably coming top 50 in 2016.

~

Also as I forgot to do this for my earlier section here's a belated selective, totally unbiased YouTube embed for the 200-181 section:

yeah there weren't too many great songs in that section

Really pleasing that 'Omen' managed to do so well this year. I don't think I've always voted for it but it was a tune of 2009 and well worth its place here.

I'm on board with mission get 'Guns And Horses' into the final next year.

I also did not know that Dynoro was Lithuanian. Always cool finding less common nationalities in our charts.

This section begins with its only 2018 entry, Rita Ora's 6-5-6-5-6-5-4-5 hit 'Let You Love Me' which has oddly ended up as her 2nd-highest non-feature; 'I Will Never Let You Down' just missed the semi-finals by one point, and the likes of 'Your Song', 'R.I.P.' and 'How We Do (Party)' weren't even nominated. The lack of 2018 songs isn't for lack of new fare, though; we've got a bunch of sleeper breakthroughs with not one, not two, but three 2010/11 songs making the top 200 for the first time. 'Islands' and 'Young Blood' have both taken massive upswings from last year, the latter particularly impressively so as it had been in the running every year, but never gone all the way. I've never voted either but good for them. On the other hand, we have my top vote of 2010 (and in one of the Ultimate Dance semi-final groups, voting open now #promo), Pendulum's massive tune 'Watercolour' which somehow never went anywhere for 6 years?? I don't know what was going on. But it's making up for lost time fast by climbing over 100 spots per year, and hopefully that'll continue and it'll make the top 13 next year ~

But my chosen star for this section is a song that was never even nominated before: Tame Impala's 7-minute psychedelic journey 'Let It Happen'. Yep, the last 3 years, there was one Tame Impala song always nominated for 2015, but it wasn't 'Let It Happen', and not even their most popular song 'The Less I Know The Better'... but the infinitely weaker 'Cause I'm A Man', which never got any higher than #66 of its year. We have RabbitFurCoat to thank for forcing a switch-up by taking a chance on 'Let It Happen', which goes to show that non-obvious nomination picks can pay off... occasionally.

'All The Lovers' and 'Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart' impressively continue 100% top 200 strike rates in their 9th years; not many songs at this level can claim that, and I always love how 'Try Sleeping...' hasn't fallen into the sands of time like it probably has in the real world, and continues to uphold itself as a classic on here. I recently noticed that 'Katy On A Mission' was once voted #10 on the reshuffle chart by the Buzzjack folk of 2010, behind even a Pepper & Piano (when's the last time you've heard that name?) song of all things, but now, 7 of the songs that outranked it either weren't nominated or got few points, and only one remains above it, so how's that for catharsis? *.*

Sadly, my country's greatest contribution to pop music (what are the chances I get a group with 26% Antipodean content?), The Veronicas' timeless masterpiece 'Untouched', falls *just* out of the top 100 in its last year cry.gif We were not worthy, but don't worry, all will be redeemed when I nominate the promised screamo version in its place next year. Zhu also fails to replicate the fortunes of other 2014 deep house favourites this year and instead crashes from his top 40 berth, but I think anyone would be surprised it ever managed to place that high anyway.

Back to Iz to begin the top 101 magic.gif

The remix was actually the hit in most places! Official charts don't do a good job at showing things like this due to combining versions and not necessarily crediting them right, but Kworb's Spotify section works well: remix, original. The original barely charted anywhere until October 2014, when they expanded the charts from top 50s to top 200s. The one major exception is the US, where the original indeed became bigger, which carried enough influence to push it up the global chart, but the remix had already been a solidifed hit in Europe and Australia/NZ. Even now, the remix still has more Spotify plays (365m vs. 314m, growing at a fairly similar rate), and much more YouTube views (724m vs. 302m, the remix growing much faster).

(Great to see 'In My Mind' debut so well and, especially, 'Walking With Elephants' enter the top 200 in your section *.*)

what a run of perfect songs - especially pleased for Young Blood finally getting its dues.

DYNAMITE?! My god. 2010 was another world.

Now I have to make the decision whether to post the first section of the final before I go to bed or after.

Great final performance for Omen! Delighted to see Animals reach the top 200 for the first time, also supporting the campaign to get Guns and Horses into the final next year. Impressive debut for In My Mind too.

And from the latest section, WOW at that performance for Let It Happen! wub.gif Also really pleased to see Watercolour make a huge climb!

I honestly don't get how anyone prefers the Stay High remix to the original Habits. The original is pop perfection and one of my favourites from that genre of all time now.

Don't ruin my hilarious joke with facts. x

(I didn't actually know the remix was a hit elsewhere, I assumed from the fact that the original was the hit version in the US that it was just a UK oddity!)

I may have a higher opinion of the original if I had heard it before the remix but it's always just sounded underwhelming in comparison. The remix was one of my favourite songs of its year, it certainly stuck out by a mile in the chart!

~

Also, I pretty vividly remember the hatred that 'Katy On A Mission' got on here at the time, always made no sense to me! Glad that the general BuzzJack populus has seen the light since xx

And I hadn't realised that 'Islands' never did well in ROTD before, that's another one that needs a campaign to finally reach the top 100 on its last attempt next year magic.gif (and same for 'Watercolour'!!)

Not having this ''Cause I'm A Man' slander btw. I still like that one more than 'Let It Happen'.

The final results begin! (at like 4am, that's just when I'm about, sorry)

Heads-up for the people who are concerned, I haven't put the information about tie-breaking in the shared results sheet for my co-presenters so assume all ties are in alphabetical order. I'll break them where requested and where I believe it to be important - and there are actually quite a few coming up.

Anyway, #91-101:

101 - 148 - 2015 Taylor Swift - Wildest Dreams ( 474 - 125 - 148 - 101 ) 100
100 - 283 - 2013 The 1975 - Chocolate ( X - 518 - X - 432 - 283 - 100 ) 104
99 - NE 2018 Robyn - Honey ( 99 ) 107
98 - 92 - 2015 Major Lazer (feat. DJ Snake & MØ) - Lean On ( 32 - 83 - 92 - 98 ) 118
97 - 80 - 2015 Adele - Hello ( 79 - 73 - 80 - 97 ) 121
96 - 201 - 2012 Ellie Goulding - Anything Could Happen ( 55 - 149 - 164 - 65 - 164 - 201 - 96 ) 122
95 - 75 - 2014 Kiesza - Hideaway ( 173 - 63 - 136 - 75 - 95 ) 130
94 - 89 - 2011 Lady Gaga - Judas ( 410 - 217 - 414 - 303 - 319 - 87 - 89 - 94 ) 130
93 - NE 2018 Mark Ronson (feat. Miley Cyrus) - Nothing Breaks Like A Heart ( 93 ) 130
92 - 98 - 2014 Katy Perry (feat. Juicy J) - Dark Horse ( 117 - 99 - 123 - 98 - 92 ) 131
91 - 41 - 2011 Avicii - Levels ( X - 331 - 285 - 514 - 202 - 347 - 41 - 91 ) 138

The 'lucky' song in the final turns out to be one of the reasons I'm doing Sam dirty with the commentary assignment, not only did I accidentally post commentary for her section, I've taken one of the few Taylor songs in the final from her. Don't worry, you've got the next one coming up xo

As such I'll channel my Sam for this and say 'you bast*rds why do you not have TASTE, putting Wildest Dreams at the bottom of the final, you got it WRONG Buzzjack, it's one of the 1989 singles that's held up the best, and it's about the most indie I've ever felt listening to a pop Taylor Swift song. That's a good thing, by the way. 100 points to open, and onwards.

The 1975 have one of the biggest profiles in alt/pop music right now and as such they see the final for the first time with their breakthrough single Chocolate, something I originally hated but have grown a grudging appreciation for over the years - 'The Sound' is far better though, let's get that in the final next year.

Honey was a very surprising entry into the final so I'm not too surprised it finished low but it looks like Robyn won't be completely done with this ROTD thing after Dancing On My Own leaves, perhaps, if it makes it into the final again, it may not, then again, just above it, Lean On has been scraping into the final and not doing very well in it for 3 years now, the same with Hello. And Lean On was a direct finalist as well. That's not particularly strong support it has there.

The official second favourite Ellie Goulding song of the site, Anything Can Happen climbs back into the final after a few years away, Hideaway, Judas and Dark Horse make pretty anonymous movements, although Judas is notable as this is now three straight years in the final after doing very little like that before, it's got a new lease of life in its old age.

The first 2018 direct finalist also falls, something I know I'd never heard before this, Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus' collaboration. It's decent I suppose, I wonder where it'll go from here.

Finally, after reaching a deserved height of #41 in somewhat tragic circumstances last year, Avicii's Levels doesn't quite reclaim that same peak but, it made it into the final again, last year wasn't just a fluke spurred on by increased morbid listening, there's some real love behind Levels, even if it hasn't done the best in this round - I think it was the last song to get off 0. Plenty of high voters, well, not plenty, but some, afterwards though.

I just realised when 'Love Me Like You Do' was in my section that 'Figure 8' and 'Anything Could Happen' have become Ellie's highest songs! Love it. Really impressive how well 'Honey' has done, and 'Wildest Dreams' is a welcome new finalist.

Taylor really is still a rising star I think over on this side of the pond. Otherwise, some new indie entries from some of my biggest faves, justice! & also nice to see a new peak for Katy's best song Dark Horse.

pleased that Levels is still comfortably top 100, shame it’s dropped so much but still a lot higher than previously.

Doesn't feel like it's been a great year for Katy so even just Dark Horse inching its way to a new peak is something!

Let's finally continue!!

Anyway, #81-90:

90 - 43 - 2014 Sia - Chandelier ( 52 - 14 - 30 - 43 - 90 ) 139
89 - 71 - 2015 Calvin Harris & Disciples - How Deep Is Your Love ( 141 - 76 - 71 - 89 ) 142
88 - 59 - 2014 Taylor Swift - Blank Space ( 28 - 93 - 113 - 59 - 88 ) 142
87 - 114 - 2012 Marina & The Diamonds - Primadonna ( 147 - 113 - 166 - 175 - 98 - 114 - 87 ) 143
86 - 78 - 2011 Adele - Set Fire To The Rain ( 131 - 109 - 67 - 88 - 80 - 146 - 78 - 86 ) 145
85 - 46 - 2017 Camilla Cabello (feat. Young Thug) - Havana ( 46 - 85 ) 146
84 - NE 2018 Janelle Monáe - Make Me Feel ( 84 ) 148
83 - 110 - 2011 Example - Changed The Way You Kiss Me ( 185 - 267 - 319 - 296 - 131 - 213 - 110 - 83 ) 150
82 - 96 - 2009 Agnes - Release Me ( X - 314 - 226 - 64 - 140 - 253 - 74 - 206 - 96 - 82 ) 151
81 - 85 - 2016 Clean Bandit (feat. Anne-Marie & Sean Paul) - Rockabye ( 92 - 85 - 81 ) 151

Kicking us off we have Chandelier which faces its biggest fall here yet as it just holds onto a top 90 position! The song is amazing but is still low-key overplayed and is a lil bit too overexposed so I'm not too surprised that its starting to fall, One of the few good Calvin tracks of the latter half of the decade also pops up here as HDIYL (feat. Ina Wroldsen who deserved a credit for her fab vocals) stumbles a bit from its peak last year!

After that we've got the obvious highlight of this section (& the 2nd results batch to have the video embed from the queen of pop) in the form of Taylor Swift's 2nd single from pop heaven 1989 'Blank Space'. BS was another massive worldwide smash for Taylor and the song is fantastic lyrically whilst also having one of Taylor's absolutely best videos, that is still watchable today! I can't believe this was already 5 years ago!! Anyway Blank Space falls a bit from last year and has still failed to reach it's year 1 high sad.gif I'm actually shocked it doesn't do better here, most other forums always have it around top 20 for decade-is stuff like this! Let's change that here next year x

Now onto some fab pop tracks <3 Primadonna is a Marina highlight and her best song (after Blue & I'm A Ruin) so it's pleasing to see that reach a new peak this year! One of Adele's holy trinity of ballads stumbles a few places this year as Set Fire To The Train pops up here, a classic that's had a really consistent run here, unlike some of her other songs from the same era x Havana also tumbles a bit in its 2nd year in the competition, still a banger tho.

Our only new entry in this section comes from Queen of music & movies & basically everything Janelle Monae <3 Make Me Feel is one of my fave songs from last year so I'm overjoyed to see it perform so strongly here despite not being a hit sad.gif At least the song & Dirty Computer got critical acclaim, MMF is such a feel good stomper of a track and the vocals/production SLAY. Hopefully it can continue to rise next year <3

That random ExamPLE song that I honestly forgot existed reaches a new peak this year as it makes the top 100 for the first time! I think it's a bit of a banger iirc but yeah too high here x Kickstarts>>>>>>

Release Me reaches it's third highest peak in ROTD this year as it's the only song in this section we say goodbye too <3 8 year old me was obsessed with this song when it came out, and yeah I'm still pretty much obsessed with it now. Such a fantastic song that can easily be played on repeat, I'm glad it had one of its better finishes in its final year over the course of a crazy up and down run here!

Finishing this section we have Clean Bandit's mega smash Rockabye just reaching a new peak, staying very consistent over its three years so far! It's a bop but I always thought it was more liked than this on site haha!
