Secondly, an update:

Merely a week after qualifying for our first BJSC, our country has just signed up for our biggest challenge yet. That's right: we are the only debuting country entering the spin-off BuzzJack Song Contest: Your Best Of. While everyone is sending their hidden (and in some cases, popular *cough Martin Garrix cough*) gems, we have decided to go for a new entry:


#BJSCYBO: 4Count - "Epic"



The boys of 4Count are hungry for a hit as they represent us in our first ever spin-off. With such an infectious dance beat, who can't like a song like this?

#BJSC75: A-Trak f/Andrew Wyatt - "Push"



The Canadian producer is representing Cor Lupus for the 3rd Quarter Quell 75th BuzzJack Song Contest (so basically the Quarter Quell). Most of you may know A-Trak as the guy who made https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=or3U2rXxvQw, or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKl9BJp5kIs, but this time, he's bringing in future house to the full moon country. He teams up with American indie artist Andrew Wyatt for this one. Can they outpeak Brielle? Only your support can help with that!

#BJSC75RESULTS

I'm actually quite surprised! The first points surge in the beginning and then at the end really got me, and I'm so glad to announce that this was the country's first giant hit! I did imagine a top 20 for this, but I never would have thought it would reach over 200 points. And we were this close.

Thanks to everyone who supported A-Trak, even if it was just a commiseration (because that just means you'll recommend it to your friends anyway), and thanks to those who helped me with frustratingly choosing out of many potentials. All the blood, sweat, and mostly tears that come into this are for you all.



I look forward to seeing everyone at Kylienips for #BJSC76, where we will keep bringing out the good vibes for the summer. Hopefully we'll go 3 for 3 just in time for the Teen Wolf premiere!

#BJFestivalen2k15: Dirty Androids - "Spinning Around"
Time: 2:04



Ah, the wonderful, colorful world of Bemani. A wide array of games and a wide array of genres - and the songs are about two minutes long. So there was no doubt that we were going there for our first instrumental entry. Daisuke Akitsu, also known as Dirty Androids, is one of the commissioned artists for the video game Beatmania IIDX, whose productions span a numerous amount of genres, from glitch hop to chillstep to drum n bass. Our entry, "Spinning Around", continues off the back of the future house movement set by top 15 act A-Trak, bringing a funky French House vibe. A nice way to start the summer with something that's almost nostalgic in its sound. Will the track being one of the shortest in the entire contest help it or hurt it? Only your support can bring it to the top!

#BJFESTRESULTS

Tenth in the semi. One of the worst performers in the entire thing. That could have not gone any worse. Apparently people just don't appreciate video game songs these days. One of the biggest supporters from our semi was Ethanola, who ranked us second place in his book. Shout-outs to Danaelanda, Mulgracia and Jadakissnia who also voiced pity on us. To Mulgracia: looks like we're following in your footsteps of dying in BJFest and hopefully smashing it next year!

One of the biggest upsets was Hushkanukia narrowly missing it on the final, while one of the biggest surprises was our good friends of Flynnoda, who finally find success in this spin-off. The pack salutes you.

New goal: redemption. How are we gonna do that? Top 10 in July. The road to redemption is upon us, so really hoping y'all are ready to join the train. We need it: we really need to slay this coming contest.

#BJSC76: New Politics - "West End Kids"



Shouting from the rooftops for the July Edition of BJSC is Danish-born, Harlem-based rock band New Politics with their single, "West End Kids"! Now... they are in no means a new band - they've been around for a while, currently in the midst of releasing their third album, Vikings, next month. Their biggest hit, "Harlem", didn't get up to Billboard hit standards. But these guys have worked their butts off, and I can say that this is their best track yet. With a pretty explosive chorus, anthemic hook, and pulsating energy throughout, this new alternative phase should bode well for the country. Hey, we're just some kids from the west end.

Yes! These guys were a potential of mine, I found them bc they supported Paramore and Fall Out Boy on their coheadline tour last summer in America, probably would have chosen that track or Harlem, I love this band and I really hope they do well for you this month

#BJSCDanceAnthems: BT f/JC Chasez - "Somnabulist (Simply Being Loved)"



So Cor Lupus has decided to take the risk of ~ not being cheap~ to this spin-off and release this song from 2003 by American producer BT. While it was made in 2003, it became his biggest hit on Billboard three years later in 2006, where it peaked at #98. He also had a few UK hits, but that was during the 90's This is mainly known for landing in the Guiness Book Of World Records back when it was released for "Most Vocal Edits In A Song", with 6,178. Fun fact: it was also featured on the North American console version of DanceDanceRevolution Extreme, so the trend of sending songs from video games to spin-off's continues.

Well, sorry it's a bit late... the Aquafina Platinum tour made a stop at New Beacon City for a day and we got to witness pretty much Buzzjack's version of Electric Daisy Carnival, so thanks so much for including us in your tour and we're glad to support you guys. Tiesto, Alex Metric, Audien, Galantis, so many good acts there with amazing sets.

Anyway, a new personal best at seventh place! How about that? It was such a strong and amazing contest overall and the competition was extremely stiff. Shout out to Aquafina, who were not just the true alphas of our vote but the true alphas of the entire thing! We could have not asked for any more after what happened at BJFest. This was the redemption we needed.

On the rest of the contest: Awuafina took home the gold this month, while it was a strong finish for Tinnmark as they nab second place. Remember this though: it's hard to get on top, but it's even tougher staying there. Also, shout out to our good friends as Flynnonda, who did pretty well for their first qualifier!

You know, I'm kinda scared for next month's contest. Word on the street is, a new country is joining us, and we got a few other veterans coming our way. I can assure you, the Lupine Pride is strong, and we'll keep getting stronger.

Thanks to New Politics for representing us, thanks to Kylienips for an amazing contest, thanks to Dylan O'Brien for stopping by to present our votes, and of course, thanks to each and every one of you for continuing to support our country. From 7th in 76 to bottom 5 in this spin-off. We should get an award too: most inconsistent performance in contests.

But really, I actually thought that this song would end the flop streak we've been getting in spin-offs, and to see it crash and burn is kinda disheartening. But that means another chance at redemption. We are the comeback kids of this generation. You know what happened after 4Count flopped? Our first BJSC hit. After Dirty Androids? New Politics get top 10.

Now, can history repeat itself a third time? I don't know.

Also exciting news! We may or may not be entering the next spin-off in Hushkanukia, but we've been called and invited a bunch of times and it makes it pretty tempting to come over.

Anyway, thanks to those who supported BT and we look forward to seeing you guys in this next chapter.

Following the success of New Politics last month, we continue our head banging with "Savages", the latest single by Five Knives. The electro-rock fusion band is currently signed by Red Bull Records, the same record company also sponsoring AWOLNATION (known for making the worst song of all time). Will the fusion of synths and rock influences nab us a fourth qualification! Only your votes can help us!

It's a month of firsts for us as well - the first time in the first semi, the first time sending a female-fronted band, and the first time two past potentials have been sent.

We've continued an upward spiral as "Savages" nabs both our biggest points grab and highest position yet! While it would have been nice to get top 3, it was one of the most exciting results threads in most recent times, unlike the past two contests where there was a runaway winner. It was a bit surprising for me and I had to admit that it took me aback a bit because I did not expect this song to make the top 10, let alone top 5. Just being up there with thee greats is mind-blowing.

For the first time since our debut, we have nabbed our first semi-final win! "Savages" grabbed a whopping 128 points in Semi-Final 1, our first trek into that semi. This is truly an honor.

Aquafina pulled the impressive feat of nabbing consecutive with previously sent artist Alex Metric, a song that wasn't our true alpha of the contest but still made out pretty well with the rest of the countries participating. Coming in second place was the forefront contender of the entire thing, Aeroche with Ponibbi's "Heartskip", who disappointed in the end but with the results close as they were, it was all worth it. Two of our potentials had also been entered - Triangledonia sent in our second potential, Every Last Chance's "Spotlight", which got our 18 but only managed bottom 2. Sam Bruno's "Search Party" was also sent, managing 11th place.

I'm also glad to announce that - oh wait, we're not supposed to announce that yet? Okay. Should I talk about the spin-off thing? Maybe later.

Thanks to all of you who supported Five Knives in such a historic moment, thanks to them, thanks to Tom, everyone. This contest has been absolutely amazing.

#WorldVision2k15: DJ BY.ZAK - "Fucking With My Foolks"
Country Represented: Morocco



Okay, so we got Morocco for WorldVision, which was AGONIZING to choose from, but in the end we decided to have a bit of fun with it and go with our second instrumental (give or take a few samples) entry sent to a spin-off. This comes from Moroccan DJ/hip-hop producer DJ BY.ZAK, whose first mixtape was filled with a bunch of banging hip hop beats that could be found in some American rhythmic radio stations as an interlude. Or you can fly over to Casablanca or wherever and hear his music there. Or just check out the SoundCloud link.

Another switch of the dynamic following two top 10's leads us to Australian producer Thomas Jack representing us for our fifth contest. The tropical house genre is a nice change of pace from the red hot, high-octane entries from the last two contests, so hopefully it bodes well for this semi. Dance bloc - be my savior.

Different from your last 2 attempts, its got a great beat, and a great latino vibe, it could catch on, a very Carribbean flava, love the steel drums on it, overall a great production over the track, me like on first listen, and usually it takes ages for something to click with me.

Top 20 is completely surprising for a song that I thought would get last place or flop at the bottom 5 like the rest of the spin-off entries, so I'm glad that the latter didn't happen and this scored us the first ever Lupine hit in a spin-off!



During our votes, 1/4th of 4N1 has revealed to be in the area: that's right Elric Beakerman is backstage for an all-new segment in the thread called "Backstage Access With Elric Beakerman"! Check him out as he scours the backstage for people to interview him. Not calling him desperate or anything... but it's an interesting segment. Where will Elric go first?

Backstage Access with Elric Beakerman! Episode 1: BJSC 78

Heya guys! It's Elric here, and as you all know, I devised a plan to sneak into one of the biggest events in the Buzzjack world called the Buzzjack Song Contest, where I somehow got hired and got the chance to sneak in backstage to interview the biggest artists here! This episode, I chatted with Tyler Posey on co-hosting the 78th edition of the contest with past winner Aquafina.

At the end of the contest, our entrant Thomas Jack safely qualified in the final (giving us a fifth qualifier - how crazy is that?) and ended up coming 21st overall (which is kinda underwhelming), but the real story that propped up afterwards is a scandal about countries rigging votes! Aquafina was slated to have their third win in a row, but apparently they've been ousted ft rigging votes into their favor!

Long story short: this means our closest friends in Mulgracia have taken the crown this month! We are so proud of these guys who have really shot upward in quality this year, and we wish them luck for the next contest.

Next up: it's off to Danaelanda where we talk to American indie-pop duo The Pierces on their trek to success in this month's spin-off! Thanks so much again for all the support!

Another trip to Canada brings us 15-year-old Charlie Storwick to represent Cor Lupus in the special Halloween edition of BJSC. Compared to the likes of Lana Del Rey and Lorde, this haunting track serves as the debut single and her first recorded single in three years for her. Backstage Access Episode 3: Who Run The World?

The success for Cor Lupus keeps on going as our two female acts performed well in the spin-off and the actual contest, respectively.

Let's start with The Pierces. We were over the moon with choosing the sister duo and Pretty Little Liars theme composers for our BJSC roster, and they ended up placing 6th with "You'll Be Mine". Not too shabby for a song that's five years old.

Just yesterday, it was announced that Charlie placed 14th in the 79th contest, just two points away from the unlucky (but sacred to this month) 13th (and we blame Jayrusalem for making us think Cor Lupus racism may actually be real). That wasn't the interesting news: she also happened to win the semi! By the skin of her teeth. For being the youngest competitor entered in the contest at fifteen years old, I think this was a pivotal move for both the contest itself and our contest history, as it could really inspire the other countries to try out younger performers. One other teen entry was entered: Pupok's Marina Kaye with "Dancing With The Devil".

So we finally have a moral victory to claim for ourselves. And Persephonia points.

Backstage Access Episode 4: Tickets, Please



American Horror Story has become a big inspiration for some more creepy tunes for the Halloween spin-off in Terra Avium. We are pleased to announce that we have recruited The Voice US alum Melanie Martinez for this affair, with her single "Carousel". Arguably the most well known of her singles, this song was featured in the main trailer for the fourth season of American Horror Story, with the appropriate subtitle "Freakshow". Come one, come all, and witness this songbird scour the depths of this horror-filled spin-off.



It's also revealed that she will be headlining the annual Monster Bash alongside former Lupine act A-Trak.

With the main contest underway, we've completely switched gears to a fun bubblegum future bass track that we've been teasing as "not the usual Cor Lupus". Australian producer Wave Racer has been added to our roster this month, only recently releasing an EP full of jams. Seems like we've been inspired by Mario Kart a bit. Will we speed past our fellow competitors to victory, or will we get hit by a bunch of red shells early on?

Backstage Access Episode 6: Coming Up This Holiday Season...

Wave Racer ended up placing at 27th, and after a bunch of consistently high odds, it's kinda underwhelming. We do want to thank Ajanaeda for the 18 and St. Burbia and our good friends Mulgracia for the 15.

So clearly going the experimental route wasn't going to work out and we're reverting back to our more fun selves come January... or will it come sooner? Here's what's coming up this holiday season:

1. There is a holiday contest special being held in Ultraviolenceland. Confirmations are beginning tomorrow, and let's just say that we've been a little naughty this year. Hopefully there's still a bit of points under our trees.
2. The special New Beacon New Year: 2015 In Review is coming up soon! There can only be one true alpha this year - will it be you? Sometime in December, we'll get to see

2015 proved to be a successful year for Cor Lupus. Seven contests, seven lucky qualifiers. Pretty lucky number. An expanded final helped the country reach out to others in the neighborhood to discover new music all around. Stakes were high, and in the end, success was massive.

Shortly after announcing confirmation for the Christmas spin-off, a local radio station tweeted out to their thousands of listeners to vote for their top 10 songs this BJSC year. After sending in their votes, fans were greeted by a single wolf emoji. 🐺

The votes were soon to be collated for the phenomenon known as New Beacon New Year: 2015 Year In Review.

Many songs were voted for, but there can only be one true alpha of the year. Will it be your song?

I could touch the sky and catch a star for you...

BEGAN: April 2015
ENTRY: Brielle - "Catch A Star For You"
PLACING: 31st - 169 points

There is a saying that says, "to get to the top, you must first start from the bottom". This was the debut act, one to test the waters with. Were we going to move on to become among one of the most successful countries in the game, or will we end up getting lost in the shuffle? This performance suggested the latter. We were pretty lucky to have qualified with the extended qualifier spots, by then raising from 16 from the last month to the now used 20 qualifiers. Of course, after that the rest was history, but back then, we didn't know what appealed to the masses and after that what would happen to future entries. It was a bit of a humble beginning but at least we regained our footing.

The biggest highlight was seeing an act that had reached #4 in the local charts before: Midnight Red. It was both a joyous surprise and a bit of dread as we thought that a boy band was too big a risk to send on a debut. These guys ended up qualifying.

Most Undeserved DNQ: Feder f/Lyse - "Goodbye"



Having pointed this, it was a shock back then given that the semi-spoken word type of lyrics were incredibly infectious and it was everything the UK had asked for in a hit back then. I ended up charting it anyway, nearly five months after it suffered injustice. Now that it's Rejects season, I'm praying that normality will be restored.

Songs That Could Get Pointed Now:

Asta f/Allday - "Dynamite" (D'yermak'er)



Back then, I never really paid attention to the songs and pointed which ones were the most memorable and had the best impression on me. This somehow passed me by. Flash forward about five days after the final while Perseventyfive was still in production and I saw this charting in Australia and thought maybe it would be a nice BJSC entry. Then I found out it was sent to this contest. Bal, honey, I am so sorry.

4Minute - "Crazy" (N DNTN)



It didn't really capture me the way most K-pop songs would by first listen, and it sped by me during the final voting. Checking this out again, the girls really blew me away. I really hope there's more success for Asian pop in the future after seeing it crash and burn the past few months.

Spada f/Elen Levon - "Cool Enough" (Ramrynia)



This was also pretty unmemorable back in the day. Then, I decided to check it out on my train from my cousin's house in Geneva to where my family and I were going to stay in Paris, and it was both relaxing and life-redeeming. Honestly, Ryan, had you sent this in 76, I probably would have given you as many points as ASTR.

Andy Duguid f/Jaren - "7even" (FSR Rontvia)



This had oodles of hype among it and I just didn't know why and it escaped me when voting for the final. It succeeds at the rare feat of managing to be both generic and not generic at the same time.

Final thoughts: This contest did have some gems in it, but little did we know that the quality was going to increase as time went on.

BEGAN: May 2015
ENTRY: A-Trak f/Andrew Wyatt - "Push"
PLACING: 13th - 211 points

The first of two Canadian entries on this year's roster, it was a nice change of pace to see A-Trak's recent dip into melodic future house get through to the final. Seeing all the odds and predictions, it seemed like a safe qualifier at best but wouldn't really get that far in the end. Proving them wrong was a delight. This ended up being a massive improvement from our debut and made us think that this contest wasn't so cut throat after all. In fact, I think this is the contest when we started getting serious.

Highlights include Unovia getting vetoed with someone who got sent twice then sending a song that ended up getting to the top 5 in Australia about a week later, the start of the Lost Kings domination, and somehow getting no 18's and reaching so high in the competition. Not to mention the history Kylienips win. Hope the Mikey scandal doesn't make him turn his back on Buzzjack completely, because he's been on a roll.

Most Undeserved DNQ's: Don Diablo f/Maluca - "My Window" & Alessia Cara - "Here"




"My Window" was the true standout of Semi 2 that contest, so I don't know what the voters were smoking to get it so far behind. I also thought that Alessia Cara would get through by the skin of its teeth, only to drop pretty low in the semis. Then it started smashing in Canada and later the US, and everyone, including me, became so gung-ho about it we all forgot it was a DNQ.

Songs That Could Get Pointed Now:

Daniella Mason - "Shade Of You" (Hushkanukia)



This was more of the same old same old from Hushkanukia, known for female empowerment anthems (aside from Haris and the other dudes in PVRIS), so it never really captured my attention until I found a few ballads for my potentials for 76. I did give this a commiseration, so Cameron didn't really leave empty-handed that contest. 10/10 would recommend.

Halsey - "Ghost (Lost Kings Remix)" (Triangledonia)



Im searching for something that I can't reach...

I had never heard something so slow and lush since Selena Gomez released "Write Your Name" and it ended up gaining a commiseration from me as well. Fast forward to the release of BADLANDS. Everyone on Tumblr was raving about Halsey. So I revisited this, and I gotta admit, I might actually like it more than some other songs that I pointed during said contest.

Etienne de Crécy & Madeline Folin - "You" (Espen)



This was another song that I decided to give a try when I went to Paris. It escaped me during the final, despite it being a decent song in the first place. I think if Cal had sent it in a later contest, it would have been one of two instances where I supported Espen. The other time? Well, we'll just have to wait until the countdown.

Final thoughts: I would like to send A-Trak again, now that he's released more songs and I've been given access to more of his artists in his record label (through YouTube no less). Andrew Wyatt is a phenomenal vocalist and with Miike Snow attempting a comeback, that might be a choice as well.

ENTRY: New Politics - "West End Kids"
PLACING: 7th - 219 points

Sending New Politics was definitely a game changer. It was the first time we've sent an alternative song on the brink of an alternative win, and it was another established act elsewhere. Their mission, should they choose to accept it, was to redeem the country from a poor showing during BJFestivalen. And redeem they did. This received three 18's, the most out of all of the Lupine entries thus far. For a song that came out just five weeks before confirmations. Special thanks to Taahino, Aeroche, and Aquafina for those 18's.

The biggest highlight was Aquafina's record-breaking win - you know, the one that wasn't a giant Buzzjack scandal - and the song's subsequent rise to #1 in the UK.

Most Undeserved DNQ: Morgan Page f/Lissie - "Open Heart" (Harmonica)



Harmonica ended up getting another breakthrough with Jocelyn Alice (whom we were happy to give points to) but this was the best of their output by far. This was one of those songs that also worked well with the acoustic version, which could have appealed to the pop hoes more. Luckily, Morgan Page has a chance to redeem himself in Rejects, but this was a pretty questionable DNQ.

I did give this a commiseration. I thought the final was too strong to fit it in. Then it slowly wormed its way into my head and then won my heart. Jai Wolf - "Indian Summer" (Florina)



Now this actually took me by surprise! I was actually present for part of the final listenthrough of that contest, and at the time I didn't really think it was all that special, so it completely passed me by. A few weeks later, I went to this farmer's market and decided to pop this song into my SoundCloud because it fit the theme. That was when it won my heart. Apologies Froot.

Sandra Lyng - "Play My Drum" (Tinnmark)



Well, clearly I wasn't paying attention because this was getting hyped to no end! It also passed me by in the semi, not even getting a commiseration from me. I bet you all thought I was crazy. Now I think I might be going crazy because this song has finally won me over. I did get the opportunity to point Tinnmark later in the year, but we'll save that commentary for later.

AURORA - "Running With The Wolves" (Daehun)



Followers of the Teen Wolf thread (hi Yu) will remember when I completely lost my sh*t due to this featuring in a scene between Ryan Kelley and Holland Roden. In Yu's words, "You should've, you never ever point Daehun " At least I'm admitting that this could bet points now! I did, however, point this in the semi, probably due to it being a mellow rock song with the word "wolves" in it. I guess that's why it was featured in Teen Wolf?

Final thoughts: Game changer. Our first top 10 and a sign that bigger things were on the horizon. We'll save that for the next contest's commentary, though.

ENTRY: Five Knives - "Savages"
PLACING: 4th - 338 points

Like we couldn't make a recap of this year without mentioning our biggest hit to date! I love finding a guitar-based track and thinking, "Wow." That was the reaction I got when first hearing "Savages". Given, it was late at night in Vegas after an extra long road trip, it was hella amazing. To see it get recognition from several US radio stations and other forums? I was pretty stoked. Both "Push" and "West End Kids" were sent to BJSC while gaining airplay in their respective formats, but "Savages" was entirely new, so to see it take off slowly but surely was like watching one of your kids grow up.

Now I know how Ramrynia feels most of the time.

Most Undeserved DNQ: Dimension f/Raphaella - "Pull Me Under" (Terra di Campioni)



CALLUM IF ONLY YOU PAID ATTENTION TO BJSC THIS MONTH. This was a brilliant example of the kind of "rhythm-based video game type of music" that I love. Of course "Get This Right" was pretty good, and I was able to point something like this with Jadakissnia's cyber D'n'B joint, but this was absolutely godly.

I would honestly list 75% of this list, but here are the true highlights:

Kesh You - "Ризамын" (New Lexico)



When I first listened to it, it didn't quite register with me, and I was kinda confused about the added extra hype of a Kazakh girl band possibly doing well in BJSC. It ended up getting 14th, so I listened to it again. It sounds straight out of Cirque du Soleil - the production, the harmonies, the atmosphere of the entire song, it makes you feel like you're in another world.

GFOTY - "Friday Night" (Hendinia)



Where's the Bentley at? We've been waiting for, like, 20 minutes!

I have to admit that I wasn't totally into PC music back in the early days of my BJSC career, and while "HEARTSKIP" was whimsical (which was expected with nightcore songs), this was completely chaotic and I was kinda confused. Listen to this in a casino to get the full effect - that's my advice. I'm so sorry Rob that I wasn't able to recognize the brilliance of this song during the contest!

Jillette Johnson - "Torpedo" (Hushkanukia)



The second Hushkanukian act to get a commiseration in the previous contest and a mention here, and I would still point them now. Jillette was one of those songs that wasn't much of a discovery for me - actually, like Brielle, I discovered her while I was working out. Yeah, my gym had a weird playlist. This nearly missed out on my votes (you can blame Altyr for that because "Get This Right" is amazing), but its brilliance still shows.

NIIA - "Body" (Yehesi)



This was another one of Yehesi's ventures into the subtle R&B type of songs, and this kinda reminded me of something Rihanna should have done for her comeback. It was both sexy and dark, while at the same time uplifting, which is a rare combination. To see it get knocked down from my votes in such a strong final was a bit heartbreaking to say the least.

Wrathschild - "Mars" (Avalonia)



I was able to give points to Avalonia when SVË was sent to the contest (truly their best entry), but this was when I started to notice them as true fighters and contenders. Don't get me wrong, Lifehouse was a pretty nice entry, but it seemed like DNQ fodder. This, however, was one of my contenders to win. To see is only scrape top 30 was criminal.

Raye - "Bet U Wish" (Jukianië)



Totto is probably the only person who's really gotten R&B during his entire BJSC career and nothing would get past this song in terms of quality (except Kehlani and maybe EAD3N). It also pained me to cut this out of my votes because it ended up growing on me into something that would play in a few US radio stations. Don't give up hope on those though - just look at The Internet's "Under Control".

Sicko Mobb - "Kool-Aid" (Trifoski)



This was a song that I expected to hate, actually. I was surprised to be treated to one of the best hipster rap experiences outside of Tumblr. Only on Buzzjack. This received a commiseration as well, but if ONLY this had managed to get through the semis in possibly 78, I would have definitely pointed it. I eventually did throw Trifoski a bone later in the year, but this was pretty sick.

Final thoughts: This is one of my favorite contests EVER, let alone this year. The contest was incredibly strong in terms of quality and cutting songs out of my top 20 was just a chore.

BEGAN: September 2015
ENTRY: Thomas Jack - "Rivers (Original Mix)"
PLACING: 21st - 171 points

Our first hosting gig. I would like to give a special thanks to Aquafina for making it all possible. Unfortunately, the entire contest has been soiled with controversy that it doesn't seem right to look back into it. But I'll do it anyway.

This month marked a significant change in dynamic as we went from the hard-hitting "Savages" to the chill and laid-back "Rivers", just as summer is about to end. Two other potentials in "Rush" and "R U Mine" were also sent. We now know how it feels to be in Cadelicia's shoes - to realize that you could have gone top 10 with an entry that you considered is kinda painful. I will say this, however: co-hosting was such an amazing experience and I'm thankful that I was able to obtain this opportunity. Thanks to everyone for all the support.

Thankfully, Thomas Jack might get some real-life revenge, as "Rivers" was re-recorded with the assistance of Nico & Vinz, and now the video has been put up. Maybe now it can smash?

Most Undeserved DNQ: Christina Novelli - "Same Stars" (Danaelanda)



As most will remember, I had a mini meltdown over this DNQ'ing in the semi I had hosted. WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU ALL THINKING. Thankfully, the song now has a chance to smash in Rejects, and hopefully it will get the justice it deserves. It's also good that this qualified as it's a feel-good track to lighten up anyone's mood in such an era of negativity and discrimination. We are one race, looking at one sky, surrounded by the same stars. It's a brilliant message.

Songs That Could Get Pointed Now:

Sweet Suspense - "Gibberish" (Yehesi)



I support Sweet Suspense fully - I have since their stint on X Factor. For them and MAX to record the same song and then release it at different times kinda confused me when it came to confirmations, especially since I went along knowing the MAX version was the first released (it was one of my potentials). This ended up getting a commiseration from me, but now I actually think I could have thrown it a bone. My top 20 was pretty strong anyway.

Pawl - "Set My Heart On Fire" (Syndare)



I was genuinely surprised by how good this song was considering Syndare had repeatedly dropped the ball over the summer. It has grown on me little by little, but unfortunately back then it didn't get any points from me. Sorry David.

ENTRY: Charlie - "Ghosts"
PLACING: 14th - 204 points

Our youngest act through comes in the form of 15-year-old Canadian Next Star veteran Melissa Storwick, more commonly known by her middle name Charlie. This was her first single in three years since her days at Next Star, a show that has produced Canadian singers by the likes of Alyssa Reid and Victoria Duffield. So to think that three years and an acting career would get in the way of her talent as a singer? Not likely. It's because she's that young and has garnered that much success already that made us pay attention to her, so that when she released "Ghosts", it was a clear impact. Let me tell you: that type of pop perfection should not be locked up in a small radio format.

Most Undeserved DNQ: Friction f/Josh Barry - "Freak" (Varakë)



Varakë is a country that rarely gets the appreciation it deserves whenever their entries garner it. "Luxury" went over my head and the other DNQ's I could either take or leave. This one... I just can't bear to see it fail so much. It didn't even get the justice it deserved. Like, hello? This is another Chase & Status-like song, and if Koven could get through, I thought this would stand just as much of a chance.

Songs That Could Get Pointed Now:

Avec Sans - "Resonate" (Quintessa)



This has indeed... for lack of a better term, resonated with me now. It was quirky, at the time it was pretty tricky to follow your position, and this completely passed my by despite doing both the semi final and final Dubtrack listening parties. Luckily you were close to points the next final around, Leo. I just wish the contests weren't so strong now.

JOYRYDE - "GIVE MY LOVE" (Vulkyria)



I think right now, this would have been the song I would repay the favor of you giving "Catch A Star For You" points for. I also believe you gave some more points to Thomas Jack? Lemme check for a bit. Anyway, this reminded me of another artist whom I considered a few contests back and this was a subgenre of dance that I could really get into. This is DJ fodder for the hipster's soul.

DiA - "Egeya" (Terra Avium)



Oh Chez I feel really bad for The Six edging this out now because this was the one song that really made you IMO. It was the blend of seriousness in the beat and the "H Καμήλα"-esque feel that really drew me in - it was so hypnotic that I couldn't just listen to it once, and that was what made me grow into it. Of course by the time I sent in my votes, you just missed out. Once again, I'm so sorry

Son Lux - "You Don't Know Me" (Tartford)



Like I said somewhere in the BJSC forum, Tartford is a country that can surprise me at any time. See Cigarettes After Sex, an entry I thought would be good for Unknown Pleasures but would be the type to crash and burn in a regular BJSC affair - that ended up qualifying. Dusty O was pretty much the same thing except it didn't qualify. So this was a complete wrench in the spammer for the most part. It really did show that the country had potential aside from sending Maria Hazell songs and defying predictions of bottom three in the semi final. It was your most successful hit, which I'm proud of, it was featured in Quantico, which was a nice surprise, and overall, the strong contest kinda held you back, but it was nice to see you succeed for a change, AH Gold.

Final thoughts: Overall, I think I'm pretty proud of sending Charlie and the success and praise she received, not just because she had a quirky blogpop song that could easily translate anywhere, but because I love discovering young talent and I really do think there is a future for her.

Lost in the moment, if the feeling's right...

BEGAN: November 2015
ENTRY: Wave Racer (feat. B▲by) - "Flash Drive"
PLACING: 27th - 157 points

So we ended the year on a low. "Flash Drive" was our lowest-scoring song of the contest after predictions of being a hit similar to "Rock U Tonite". It was a time to go experimental with a cutesy future bass song that wasn't the usual anthemic jam that we put up, to show that we can still switch it up even after exhausting most genres in past contests. So what should be my commentary to this? I've already exhausted much of what I said after the results were over... and I received so much backlash for that. This may be the last time we go experimental. Until it somehow draws us back in. Only you can decide that.

Most Undeserved DNQ: f(x) - "4 Walls" (Daehun)



Well, Yu. You know I would have given this full points if I was in the other semi, let alone given it an 18 if it qualified. You just know my weakness. Of course AOA was pretty good and only my love for "Same Stars" eclipsed that, but this was one of the K-pop songs that I expected through, out of I think five sent? This was the one that also got the most hype. It was a return to form for Daehun and y'all made it look like it wasn't. Luckily it made it through to the Rejects final so it wasn't all in vain.

Owsey, Jernalism & Resotone - "I've Been Secretly Falling Apart" (Terra Avium)



Oh, Chez Always so close and yet so far. Like DiA the contest before, this has been growing on me like a RASH. While I really liked "Ferrari" and have praised "Egeya" in the contest write-up before, I've noticed why this was the one Terra Avium moment for the masses. After much inspiration and some failures along the way, you've finally done it. Underdogs ftw.

HyunA - "Red" (Frandoot)



K-Pop is normally a hit for me so to end up cutting this and "Awoo" from my points was pretty painful. Any song that takes inspiration from Miley Cyrus is a win for me. LOVE how she paid homage to "We Can't Stop" as that is one of my favorite videos of 2015. That small "Dark Horse" homage was also pretty good.

Lim Kim - "Awoo" (Republic Of Adonia)



SPEAKING OF WHICH! Once again, K-Pop is my weakness but considering this was more on the typical K-Pop side (don't get me wrong, it was the same thing with "Red" and "Crazy"), it ended up getting kicked out by the many strong songs of the contest.

Mirror Talk - "1/M/T" (Quintessa)



This was all kinda of unfortunate. It was one of the songs I liked the best and it was between this and Chelsea Lankes. Now I really like "Home", and I hold Beaverdonia entries to a pretty high standard (at least after "Η Καμήλα"), and this was unfortunately knocked out by a hair. I'm so sorry

Final thoughts: I honestly have no idea what my next step is. I have my darkest potential yet and a few songs that I already wanna save for next contest. Maybe Iz is right. Maybe I do have too many potentials for my own good.

Twas the week before Christmas, and all through the land,
It was TBO season, 70 qualifiers the mods would hand,
This country celebrated with joy and with glee,
For not just one qualifier - no, we got three.

We were given a shock second chance with Brielle, maybe this time she can do well?



Rock got us to #1 in the mids, so maybe it will repeat for "West End Kids"?



And then came the most obvious one of the day - we for sure know Five Knives will slay:



The semis were organized with loads of care in the hope that I won't flop in despair.

The latest single from MIIA has been compared to the likes of Adele... in its original version anyway. The remix by Elephante (who we've seen before) takes it into an entirely different dimension. Generic to some, maybe, but from the beginning, it pushes the boundaries by starting off as a future pop production, only to erupt into a Zedd-like progressive drop (which he should do more of). This is mainly an attempt to reach back into our core audience after going experimental last contest. It's pretty safe to say the this time, we mean business.

Maybe I shouldn't say this but I remember playing the original back on PLUG I think it was and everyone on at the time said it was awful. The remix is an improvement though.

Backstage Access Episode 7.5: Next Month's Teaser

After weeks of predictions at the bottom three (including us predicting ourselves at the bottom two), MIIA ended up defying all expectations and placed 33rd (pending deductions). Sure it's the worst we've ever done but considering we were only aiming for that magic eight (which we SCRAPED), we'll take this as a win.

If there was one main country we'd like to thank, I'd never though I'd say this, but THANK YOU USFLAND. We had been aiming for your points and when it seemed like we gave up on you guys, you rescued us from a DNQ. We are in your debt. Just send a strong qualifier.

Next month's plans have been 90% solidified, and the main choice is a Years & Years styled track. Will this be a return to form (sorta)?

Finally kicking off this countdown! We have whopping four songs from BJSC 80, including the first from our good bros from Flynnonda. We'll get to that later. First off is Son Lux, who missed out on my votes back in 79. A small snippet of it playing in Quantico was enough to land it in this countdown. Don't say I never support Tartford.

We got Lim Kim, Owsey, Chelsea Lankes & SPELLES telling BJSC 80, the latter being the highest of the four. Lim Kim I knew from being one of Yu's potentials, the next two appear together, the former growing on me ever so slightly, and SPELLES just screamed Dance Moms lyrical routine so that sold me almost immediately.

Hip-hop has done fairly well in BJSC this year and two of its essentials appear on this countdown: Seyetana's tribute to good kid, m.A.A.d city era Kendrick with "JAY Z" appears at #146, while Empire gets a slot at #143.

Persephonia has been on and off this year with me (I think the only song I didn't get was "Ocean", the others not in this countdown were okay), and two of their songs appear in this batch: Audialist's "Burning" was an interesting CSI-styled ambient track and ended up getting points from me, while San Holo's "Hiding" is the only one of Brayden's tracks in this countdown that was in a contest I wasn't part of, which is tragic because it probably would have scored high for me.

Daehun recently got my 18 with "Hurt Locker", but they gained my love just a bit earlier than that: AOA's "Heart Attack" was the biggest casualty for the Lupine voters in Semi 1, and it lands at #147. How the hell did it take Daehun THREE MONTHS to qualify with K-Pop again? This isn't their highest K-pop entry.

Another Harry track, another Michael track, and the first from Jade and Spadam! A lot of underrated tracks appear in this batch, though let's put a spotlight on one that earned a lot of it during its contest: "Time". A first top 10 for Jadakissnia, and something very chill and brooding. This solidified Jadakissnia's status as a country to beat.

BJSC 75 is the main contest on focus this batch, with three entries: also joining ONUKA are Terra Avium's future bass/glitch hop beauty "Ferrari", and Flynnonda's most underrated DNQ of 2015 (I'd say ever but Panama Wedding happened), MORRT's "Dive Right In". Also focused a lot are 76, 77 and 80. Beaverdonia managed to get a Latin hit into the BJSC final for the year with Sofia Reyes (the video of which costars Kendall Schmidt), and Oliver Nelson's "Found Your Love", Danaelanda's lowest ranking in the top 150. Both chill songs for margaritas on the beach. Nice. For 77 we have CanCon one hit wonder Jocelyn Alice with "Jackpot" representing Harmonica, and another unfair DNQ, Funkin Matt's "Rapture" - one of two times that I got a Usfland entry. We also have LarsM's "Shivers" and SVË's "BLKNBL" from BJSC 80, the latter being Avalonia's best entry.

Then we have Kero Kero Bonito. Clearly one of the best Trifoski entries, and one that didn't deserve a meager low top 20 placing. In fact, I thought this was gonna go top 10. The work of the agenda indeed.

It also isn't the end of Seyetana, but there's still another song for the rock-infused (among other genres) country. It was my favorite Seyetana entry for a while but then another song higher in this countdown happened (and Nao Hiiragi but that's another story).

The latest Paul Kalkbrenner track also falls within that same mainframe, though I have listened to it a bit more over the past few months, as I have with Noémi, a beautiful trance track that sends me back to the days when I was just starting DDR.

"Shade Of You" was a song that I gave commiserations for due to the chorus sounding somewhat like Britney Spears' "Perfume", while Teen Wolf shipping anthem "Wolf" did get points from me, though not a whole lot. They're not the only Hushkanukia entries in this countdown. I also have to give a hand to "Pretty Green" - though I wasn't in this contest, it sure made gaming experiences a hell of a lot more lively. We also see some unjust DNQ's in the form of Sarai and Red Velvet. So glad Daehun got back on their feet so I could give them that rightfully deserved 18.

Aaaaand we have another Harry track. You know the feeling when you eat something so delicious that everything seems to move in slow motion (and people around you seem to talk in a really deep and sultry voice) and the flavor just seeps right into your mouth? That's what "Cause I'm A Man" feels like. I don't think we have to worry about Flynnonda dropping out of this countdown yet - there's one more song by them that really defined their BJSC career this year.

Drum N Bass. Not that common of a dance subgenre, but the various tracks that do come into this contest have gone well. And they sure make nice running anthems. Let's take "Egeya" for example - a bit of a dirty drumstep background production combined with a Baroque-sounding voice is a bit of an oddball combination, but it works out so well. We also have the as dirty "Pull Me Under" at #111 and the cleaner Chase & Status carbon copy "Get This Right" at #119.

It's a bit of an indication of how strong the contest is that certain songs that I didn't point in their respective contests appear here. Halsey I ended up getting into after BADLANDS was released, so that sorta counts, and "Egeya" got a commiseration. The big surprise I'm talking about is "Resonate", which ended up growing on me after a gaming sesh. There will come a day when I will finally award Quintessa points. Hoping it's this month.

Halsey isn't the only BJSC 75 song to appear: Adam Rickfors (a Daehun reject) also appears at #116. BJSC 77 makes multiple appearances as well with FLETCHER's "War Paint" at #118, the movie short theme song "Lava" at #117, and Lemaitre's take on the production to Conor Maynard's "Royalty" at #113.

Oh yeah, to wrap up we've saved the ikonek Greek children's song "Η Καμήλα" for last. I wanna say "best Beaverdonia entry EVER", but we have a song that has translated into a European hit coming up.

It was eventually time for another genre change and shift of focus as Oxford-based Pixel Fix delivers an indie pop flavor to this month's contest in Danaelanda. Of course, a bunch of countries opted for a dance sound, while ours is a bit in between the seasons. Hopefully it sticks out enough to usher in a return to form for our country.

Speaking of best Beaverdonia entry ever... "Hundred Miles" was used in several Desigual ads before making its way into BJSC, and I guess I like it more now that it's become this giant hit. We also see two song that I featured on my "Songs I Wish I Pointed" list - Asta's "Dynamite", which I came across when it charted in Australia (more R&B like this plz), and Kove's "Hurts", somewhat cheap but an incredible example of mainstream drum n bass.

The only song that DNQ'd in its contest here is "I Need U" - while it's no longer my fave Rep of Adonia single (hello Dumblonde), it was still one of those DNQ's that I could NOT accept.

It's a bit of a showcase for pre-debut contests as Ivy Levan's "Biscuit" (which is brilliant in mixes) and The Summer Set's "Lightning In A Bottle" both make appearances in this section. I pray that Taahino will never lose their pop punk roots, because the latter is PERFECTION. We also see a bit of low-pointed dance in the form of Juventa's "Move Into Light" and Italobrothers' hardstyle/handz up anthem "Sleep When We're Dead" (I don't care what anyone says, this brings out my inner frat bro and I'M PROUD.) Ultraviolenceland make their first appearance with MelFest reject Molly Pettersson Hammar's "Something Right".

Then there's "The Hardest Mistakes". As much as I miss Cassadee's voice in front of blaring electric guitars, the real power lies on the electronicore breakdown. I wish that subgenre was more accessible than it really is.

Back in the 10th season of Dancing With The Stars, Mark Ballas was the first pro eliminated when his partner was eliminated in the first week. The next season he made the finals. I actually found it while I was obsessed with "Stronger" and I thought it sounded a lot like that but never got around to sending it in the real contest, so WorldVision it was. I have absolutely no regrets now!

For next month I'm probably going the way of WorldVision and going cheap, so I have a cheap chill trap potential, a cheap pop anthem, a cheap house track, and a song that sounds like "Cheap Thrills", so the theme is #CheapHoeLupus :')

Well I'm bored so let's continue this

Am I surprised to be part of such a strong group? No. Am I proud of how far we've come? Yes. This group of countries, ourselves, Jadakissnia, Aprogonia and Flynnonda, we are a giant pack, and we stick by each other. And it's shown various amounts of times; whether it be a bunch of us rallying towards acts such as Maliibu & Helene, Tame Impala, Five Knives, and AK & Lynx (and hell even BLVCK CEILING and Atlas Genius this year), it's been a wild ride.

We're going to start with us.

So at first I was kinda hesitant about BJSC because it seemed so daunting at the time, having to impress a good 60 or so people with a song that no one else knows and then just rolling with the punches and the fact that my music tastes were just too mainstream at the time. Then I thought, "What the hell let's just do it". Turns out being the commercial country out of the four does have its advantages, with the first 8 entries of my BJSC career qualifying and then all of a sudden falling from grace and becoming the underdog country again. And I never really thought that all of that would come from my first entry, a song from an artist who I discovered from my gym's playlist. Then A-Trak was a bit of a make-or-break entry and that firmly fell into the former. Then New Politics who I've loved for a while really revved things up, and the list just goes on. Sure things on our side have gotten a bit weaker but somehow that's just how the cookie crumbles. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to venture out of the commercial area and I've done that... a couple times... and they never really worked out that well... so I guess being mainstream is like a superpower to me. So... here's to a few more contests down the road.

Where do we go next? Fighting the sudden racism that has been going on.

Flynnonda: I will admit that I was a bit scared about Harry getting into BJSC because looking at his personal charts at the time, they were very indie and very "hey, this looks like it could be on the Radio 1 playlist, you guys should listen to it" and it turns out that this is the strong point for Flynnonda. Like "Dive Right In" was clearly late night Pete Tong mixed with the SubSoul YT Channel, "Silverlined" was pretty much a more mainstream version of that sound (same with Wolfie to an extent) and we all know what happened with Tame Impala. I imagine Harry as the underdog as well, at least on the indie side, because when his picks get noticed, they get noticed. Sadly we need some way to get rid of Flynnonda racism because it's still a bit prevalent today. I would probably say "Hey Harry, why don't you just recycle Tame Impala again?" but considering that all their singles off of Currents have been part of the Radio 1 playlist, it's safe to say that he won't be self-recycling any time soon.

Flynnonda today? Well let's just say I'm still crying over Panama Wedding, and those two last places were certainly not deserved.

Jadakissnia: I think when it comes to music sense, Jade is like Braydino in a girl's body (which kinda explains their hardcore chemistry that EVERYONE seems to notice), so it was pretty clear that Jade was going to end up being the odds-on favorite out of the four of us. Yes, Jade, there will always be four of us in the pack. And 11 contests on it still looks like Buzzjack's it girl still has a bit of moves in the contest. Like introducing Veela (because Canada). Or recycling jj and still making it look inspired. Or sending a 15 year old Spanish jam. Or sending a total hip-hop instrumental and passing it off as "witch house". But still you've proven that a new country can be both inspired and mainstream at the same time. Maybe that's why you've motivated me to compete a hell of a lot more than I did during the first two months of the contest. I still listen to "Virtual Paradise" (and to a lesser extent "WVFFLIFE") on the daily, so let's hope those moves still exist in the next ten contests.

Aprogonia: I know people are finding it easier to dismiss April when it comes to this contest but with her absence still leaving a gaping hole in Buzzjack and "Lost Boy" somehow finding its way into becoming a U.S. hit (to that I say WHY), I kinda wonder what the contests would be like had April not abandoned us. I'm surprised that I've pointed April more times than both the other countries combined. Maybe t's because I'm more in the wavelength of the "sassy female anthem" more times than none and the only time she sent in a guy it was a DJ (one who I ended up sending via remix). And you know what? Ohana means family. And family means no one gets left behind. Or forgotten.

Top 100 time!

So i remember hearing this and thinking it was pretty bland at first but it really grew on me in time for voting and although the amount of points I gave it isn't much in the grand scheme of things, it was a really good pick. I also found it funny that I gave his more points than SVË who was John's potential at the time #oops. Next is Don Diablo and I've raged about that a lot last year. I wanna see more of dancey Yehesi but this "spirit of Aprogonia" vibe Tim's been giving off as of late is really giving me life. As for the rest of the songs I did point, I can echo the same thing I said about Jerome Price when talking about EVVY, "Fools Paradise" was an amazing trap song, and well... I've always loved Perfume so that was a no-brainer when it came to points. Spoiler alert: Oliver wins that round.

For songs that were around before my debut, I was kinda excited to hear CeCe Frey's new output back around October of 2014, so when I saw that it was already sent I kinda screamed inside. Good pick, Liam. And once again one of the pre-74 D'yermak'er hits. I think this might be one of my faves from you (next to "Feels" at least), so send stuff like this and I'll definitely be on the side of the Mak'er.

So SchulKid I ended up voting for in Rejects and it's among my favorite Lotti entries to date (one more song on this countdown and "So You Think You Can F*ck With Me Do Ya" edge it out by a bit), Kesh You was just a strike of genius and I didn't have enough space to vote it in TBO. I think I did nominate Sandra Lyng in TBO though. Probably one of the best Tinnmark entries as of late.

We see a song that got a medal position and the second of the UVLand entries, Bea Miller Kinnie Lane with "Je te suivrai".

Other highlights in terms of qualifiers include AQ Harper with "White Lies", the first Mulgracia song on this list, Anne-Marie's "Karate" (the only time I've pointed Thelonia in the final), Northbrook's "On A Train", MisterWives' "Our Own House" and nightcore classic "HEARTSKIP" by Matty B PONIBBI. I feel that I should note that there is a daycore song in this month's final. If anyone doesn't know what that is, daycore slows the track down rather than speeds it up like nightcore.

As for DNQ's we see another victim of Varakë racism in Friction's "Freak", and a prelude to Ethanola's impressive run of form this year, Jay Hardway's "Electric Elephants".

Tons of pop and at the same time tons of BJSC 80 tracks. First off we have the first Aprogonia track here Pretty strong debut, and when this slipped ahead of me, j was thinking that I would be done in BJSC. Well yeah. We also have Bonnie Anderson who may seem a bit cheap on hindsight but hey it's a good song.

Then we have a flurry of BJSC 80 tracks. It was one of my least favorite contests from experience but DAMN did it have some good songs. We have the weird and cool "Trance And Acid" from Kai Tracid, Tamta's "Unloved" which also uses the "sassy female anthem" trope, and Delta Heavy's "Ghost" which has one of the best videos to date. We also have another Mulgracia track in Project 46's "Take Away The Pain" and Pupok's highest entry here, Phantogram's "Black Out Days".

In terms of contests I wasn't a part of, I got introduced to "Mine" through Radio Disney and that became an instant fave, while BØRNS ended up charting briefly in the US, which got me to nominate it in TBO.

The. We have Jai Wolf. I will say that I never really paid attention to the track during the contest because it was a bit too slow for my tastes, but after a recommendation on Kostas Garcia's channel, I listened to it a bit and it grew on me enough to land on this spot.

We began to lower expectations for the final and considered a top 15 position as a comeback, and hey ho, we got 12th, which surpasses all expectations of how we were gonna do, and we're thankful that the voters pulled through for us. Thank you all, we have truly #RedefinedComeback.

Kicking things off here at #70 we have former Big Time Rush star Katelyn Tarver with a remix of Weekend Millionaires. I had a period of stanning for her after I listened to this again and discovered "You", and this was all while I found out she was in Big Time Rush. We see a medal position (this time a silver) in Audien's "Insomnia" (which should have been in his EP), and two more Mulgracia entries in the Prince-sampling "I Wanna Be Your Love" (RIP) and James' winner, "Fuel To The Fire" by Rationale.

Two Ryan tracks are in here as well in "Cool Enough" which I pointed in TBO and "Feeling Your Love (LaaDeeDaa)" which I did point in its contest. I feel that all the semi 2 stuff really got to me in 78 simply because I was hosting it and I just couldn't stop listening to that playlist. Speaking of feel good summer songs, we got Ferreck Dawn sampling another Keyshia Cole song that I really liked in 2008, sent by Ethanola, and the AronChupa reject in Badpojken sent by Dobago. Dobbo has sent three tracks that eclipse this by far, as has Ethan. We also have an appearance by Thelonia, who have recently resorted to the usual "let's send another artist featured in Pete Tong" strategy as of late which is usually hit or miss. And yeah, the new Wild Belle song is boring af, but I'll mention that when we get to the mid-year thingy.

I vaguely remember considering "Overload" as a debut potential but eventually scrapped it because I wasn't getting into it enough. So in the end this got my 12 in the semi and landed in my top 10 for the final. By no means a Cadelicia moment but it would have been nice to do well in my debut. (Yup still not bitter about Brielle)

We never thought that we would have a foreign language entry this soon, let alone in Spanish. It's something new as we haven't really had an accessible urban/hip-hop song that was this accessible and had this much flow. It's safe to say that July is our Latina month. Snow Tha Product is a Mexican-American rapper, she's L.A based, and if you look up her name, the first thing you'll see is her song "Nights" which samples W. Darling's "Nights Like This" from last August's contest. We think people will definitely take notice of this urban "Compton meets Cabo" somewhat slutjam that we've wanted to share for a while.

I feel so out of touch with this contest. A lot of the songs I thought would make it in ended up DNQ'ing and the last two contests I felt as though my inspiration has dried up, and maybe the rest of BuzzJack has resonated with me but idk. I'm struggling to find another "Bring Back The Summer" type entry that I would love anyway even if I hadn't entered it to the contest and I just feel like I've lost faith.

With all this sadness and evil going on in the world, including coming off a third DNQ (the racism!), we need to spread a little love and kindness to the world. And what better way to do that than with the one thing that unites us all: music. And fellow Latina entrant Sofia Carson is doing just that for the Reinvention spin-off. In a sea of covers, mashups and remixes, she takes the 1982 Opus smash "Live Is Life" and transforms it into her own take, and while it's not much of a straight use of the lyrics (well other than that "na na na na na" part), it's a pretty inspired look on the contest.

Let's forget the last contest. This life is a game, and love is the name.

Well 'Higher' is easily the best song here but I'd be very surprised if it wasn't vetoed, it's a new single by a very well-known band... I thought they'd be vetoed easily the last time they were entered, but even moreso this time!

The other three songs are all alright, and I imagine they'd all at least qualify 'Say' and 'Up All Night' have a chance of appealing quite well to the pop hoes I guess ~

'Higher' is pretty good but just from what I've seen on blogs / remember from the veto framework off the top of my head it'll clear 25 points easy.
'Up All Night' feels rather basic, sounds like something Hendinia would send and get mid-table in the final with I like it but it's not really a standout to me.
'Say' has a good breakdown but the rhymed feels very forced. Like the rap bit though!
I'm biased towards 'Still In Love' because I saw Jahkoy open for Tinashe but I absolutely LOVE it. Stunning remix, maybe a bit bland but that's the only real downside to me.

I'm slightly feeling doubtful on "Higher" being vetoed because sure it's hyped but they had two major NZ hits six years ago and then POOF. Then again I did think Atlas Genius had a pretty decent following and they didn't get vetoed so *shrugs*

This has really caught my attention and hooked me in the past few hours, great entry Cody!

Slightly surprised TNATF got through veto but then again they've been a little under the radar recently (though tbf their new album isn't out yet). In the past with my limited experience of them them I've had the reaction "oh they're quite nice" and never properly got into their songs but like I said this one's really grabbed me, I'll need to check out more of their stuff.

I read from the article that I pasted to introduce the entry that two of their members dated and they split and it almost ended the band, and them rebuilding their professional relationship was part of the reason of their hiatus.

As for other TNAF recommendations (assuming your knowledge of them is limited to "Young Blood" and "No Way"), "Punching In A Dream" and "I Kill Giants" are also great, but "Hearts Like Ours" is the one that sounds most sonically similar to "Higher". Hope that helps.

So what do people think once they have gotten an auto-qualifier? Go back to their roots and send something they wanted to send before? As the leader in video games, we've sent commissioned artist Nhato, a trance/complextro/dubstep producer from Japan (our second after Dirty Androids!) along with German otaku YouTuber Sasi for our second foreign language entry, the first fully in a foreign language. This song is an arrangement of a boss theme from the cult classic game Touhou, the theme being the Stage 1 Boss Rumia, called https://youtu.be/poRBii9K3dc. Japanese producer? German vocals? Touhou? If we're not getting Seyetana's love then there must be something completely wrong with the universe.

I've been wanting to send a trance song or something of that ilk ever since passing up on "Rush", so I'm glad that I ended up finding this because there's just an edge that puts it past the other trance songs I found.

Also Sasi has featured in other songs like this that can be found in her https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7kZaTpxWjU - a lot of them are either in Japanese or English rather than German. It includes a small cheeky rendition of Es Rappelt Im Karton

(I remember this time last year I had "Stressed Out" as a potential. Welp. Regretting all my life decisions now.)

I just wanna thank you guys again for giving us the opportunity to host and making this contest as enjoyable as it was for us. It seemed a little intimidating at first, but we all got through it, the final results show was one of the most talked about in ages, it was a nice frivolous affair... I couldn't have asked for more. You guys are truly amazing.

What is next for wolf country, you might be asking? We're cooking up some dark pieces for both the instrumental spin-off and our BJSC 89 entry, where we pass the torch to N DNTN. It's been described as harder and more macabre than "Ghosts" which was more mysterious in a Sia type of way, so it will be interesting to fight for a hit again. Fingers crossed!

You did a wondrous job of hosting Cody, thank you very much! I was a bit apprehensive about the whole lock down thing because it was tense enough as it was - but it turned out to be a blessing in the end I think watching me slowly drop from 2nd to 3rd would've been a bit heartbreaking to witness.

You were ROBBED! I definitely didn't expect you to be the lowest of the AQs for starters (they were both brilliant though) - I don't quite know what happened there I didn't think I'd be your biggest fan this month also But that's quite a cool accolade *.* Twice now that I've given you 12 points after 'Push', but 'Way Of Life' is now my ultimate fave of yours to date. It may be only six years old, but rest assured we're here to make sure age is but a number, especially in the Halloween season where raising things from the dead is the norm. We're back to Canadians again with Toronto-based rock band The Birthday Massacre, producing a creepy waltz rock tune for your ears. This is a shift in dynamics, going from the neon-infused ambiance of last contest to a spoopy "Alice In Wonderland but macabre" feel for the Jadaphonia contest. The video also has a reference to the classic Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Care to figure out what that is?

Plans for the annual Monster Bash are also underway and they along with The Naked And Famous have been announced as headliners.

And after wrapping up the Comeback Trio arc and DANCE WITH THE DEAD/The Birthday Massacre bringing forth a Halloween trio, we end this October with the end of the latter, as country darlings Maddie & Tae bring their sass and their feminist charm to the Country spin-off. And it seems like there's a bit of a personal connection to this song. The girl power duo consists of Maddie Marlow and Taylor Dye, the latter being the sister of Teen Wolf alum Mason Dye, who played werewolf hunter Garrett in Season 4. (He's also a really good friend of our executive branch. ) Here's what they had to say about the duo:

The country spinoff also revealed that a former Lupine potential artist had also surfaced: former Ashtonise artist and current Dancing With The Stars contestant Jana Kramer was considered for the competition with her latest single "Circles" and was outvoted against Maddie & Tae (as was Dan + Shay's "From The Ground Up), but she still has the opportunity to compete: she's dancing with close allies and friends Flynnonda. I wonder what Gleb would have to say about this.

Doing the rankings for this contest and thinking about a theme has been pretty... cathartic. I mean, it's pretty clear that the quality of my entries has regressed despite a win and two more top 10's... I don't know. Maybe the face of BJSC is changing and we just have to keep up with it, maybe being mainstream works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't (but in this year's entries it has worked). I have learned one thing: I don't really know how this works. One period of time you've picked up a string of hits and the next you're not even sure if the next three or so entries will qualify. And I feel for those who have been frustrated with their content and their direction because I've been there. I've questioned whether or not I still wanted to do this. But that's just how the system works: things click when they want to, and recreating an old formula so many times just doesn't seem to work. So I went back to that, and I've sent what may be my favorite songs I've sent this year.

So to those who have helped me rekindle that fire and those who have motivated me to jump out of the box, thank you.

So this next part is dedicated to all the past entries that I've sent, but this time they're gonna be delegated to a time span of every three months. The reason being that I don't want to revisit this and have the browser crash on me because there were too many videos.

BJSC 81 (January 2016): MIIA - "Dynasty (Elephante Remix)"



So Elephante has become one of my favorite EDM producers as of late, and it's not because the time he was sent before was pretty good and I wanted to recycle (although "I Want You" was one of the best entries last year, COME BACK TO US APRIL). It was because after that, every other single that he released seemed to have gotten better and better. So I was pretty ecstatic to see this end up in his EP a couple months ago (waaaaaay after I sent this). I like how this was kinda where progressive house was going, where it experimented but kept that rush of euphoria a standard progressive house track had. And this was the type of song that I got obsessed with during the last two weeks of last year, and four more later and I sent it. I don't want to write it off because it was pretty commercial and that's the stuff I thrive off of. Generic it may be, but it's still hauntingly addicting.

Why did I choose to relive this quarter...?

So this was pretty painful, and to see one of my favorite entries of the year get completely shit on by everyone except Mattias and Harry (the latter who gave me hope that this was another "wrong semi languisher") was pretty horrible. Don't really go back to this contest because it pretty much started me vs. Grant and me vs. the entirety of the Lottsey clique other than Lindsey (which, by the way, you are a REAL ONE. If I want someone to send the potentials I chicken out on and Addy has already got something under his sleeve, I want you to send them because clearly you need a top 10), but this was such a stellar track.

Oh yeah I almost forgot about the Movies spin-off lol. I had originally confirmed Sevyn Streeter's FF7 song (sampling Bang La Decks before they won) but then switched to this because I somehow forgot one of my favorite movies existed. Charlie's Angels was always a childhood fave of mine and I was so glad to share this. Maybe sometime I can actually join the Rabb.it festivities and shove that movie down your throats. It was also nice to see Apollo 440 qualify for the main BJSC under the Usfland regime.

I... didn't expect to come back to a BJSC final so soon. I also didn't expect to get a top 10 so soon. However, I actually liked the feeling of having a surprise hit, both here and in real life - with the Spotify scrapes and the commercial dance airplay success. Maybe being vetoed was a good thing... it's always led me to surprise hits. I also thought about sending Marshmello's "Alone" at one point but I think one commercial dance success per year is enough for me.

I got to represent Romania for this edition of the contest, and man was it easier than Morocco to find something that was more commercial and ear-friendly. Although, I was also pretty surprised that this got as high as it did. I actually had this as a potential from last year but then forgot about it, and getting Romania actually reminded me of this song. It was a pretty good day rediscovering it.

So apparently this year was big on flops and surprise hits, "Gone" being the second of them. Turns out I still had some in me when it came to commercial alternative. I was unsure whether this would get vetoed as well, given that it was the third time DeLong had been entered (albeit with a remix that I'm pretty sure will get slammed unlike his other entries), but I'm glad it didn't.

Yay we're halfway

My first venture into foreign langauge. I didn't really expect a Spanish hip hop song to be my first foreign language song (personally I thought I would give in to K-pop before entering any other language) but this was still a painful flop. I kinda got pretty disoriented and started losing interest in the contest as a whole and it took stepping back and just trying out willy nilly for the next spin-off to find my direction, which kinda explains the next two songs:

Probably my best decision to ignore the naysayers who thought this was gonna get vetoed, I mean they've been gone for three years so why not? And I thought this was gonna continue the DNQ-veto-surprise hit pattern I've gotten for the past few months. It wasn't a veto, but it was a much bigger surprise. From underdog to winner. I'm so glad that it got as far as it did despite much opposition from the Lottsey clique sans Lindsey because hello this is typical indie rock, and I didn't expect it to WIN either so yay.

Also one of my favorite contests in terms of production and hosting, not just based on quality. The results had a few other shocks as well. What the hell happened with "Wild Child", guys? That should have gotten a medal position

And the subsequent AQ was also another song I was proud to send despite its tragic performance on the charts. I discovered it a few days after hearing "Higher" but decided to save it in what I dubbed "The Comeback Trio" (which wasn't really a comeback as it consisted of two bottom fives and a win, the inconsistency). I was also faced with the challenge of hosting and having to adjust deadlines to coincide with the huge time zone gap (word of advice: don't post deadlines on a Sunday). Luckily that went well and we got to see a good winner and a sigh of relief from me. And it was also nice to pass the baton to Jade. Next time either of us win, we need a BJSC 74 squad hosting sesh.

36th. Yeah that says it all. Worst spin-off position EVER. Which was heartbreaking given I had such a good run with spin-offs. I guess people didn't really take into "Cody gets into the Halloween spirit" for this because this was so season-appropriate and just had the right feel at the time. It's not as Lady Gaga instrumental-lite as "Waves" but it had a certain flair that just made it so... me.

BJSC 89 (October 2016): The Birthday Massacre - "In The Dark"

The most rock song that I've ever sent. There's something that's very sonically similar to Evanescence about this and that's partially why I sent it. I wanted to continue the trend of me sending Halloween-themed entries during October and this was equal parts haunting and addicting at the same time. Thank you Lindsey for that 15 or else I probably would have not survived during that contest.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is how an American stuck in a teenage mind does a country spin-off. By sending something that's stereotypically country but not as irritating as the likes of *shudders* Luke Bryan... They're an amazing country duo with one album so far (and I really hope they're making more material because they're too talented to stop now!) and I'm glad they got as far as they did. It just sucks being the Jadakissnia of spin-offs... maybe that top 3 is coming?

BJSC 90 (November 2016): Contact - "Never Stop"

I think this song was the big return to the classic Cor Lupus MTV sound that was super prevalent during most of 2015 (and spring of 2016). Oddly enough this type of sound actually works in our favor. 4th place in such a close and low-scoring contest overall was pretty impressive.

Looking at the results of all of them, I'm still confused as to why "Higher" ended up winning lol. Go silent majority! Also was nice to see some justice for Atlas Genius as that was clearly in the wrong semi (Jade's votes be damned, I still appreciate your support )

BJSC 91 and the road ahead:

With "Leave This Place" going top 10, the pressure is on to keep this upward momentum and possibly improve on the mistakes made last year. The road will not be easy. This is a completely different ballpark, and the audience has shifted a bit. Sometimes safe won't work, and other times thinking outside the box will leave you in the dust. So the goal for this year is to find a happy medium. Offer a bit of experimentation but at the same time stay true to the sound.

So we stand, eyes glowing red, moving forward to the road ahead.

I feel REALLY BAD because you've given me so much support and I've only given you a measly ***one point*** in total. I mean, you supported "Higher" when your brother couldn't, and then it didn't stop there. And my theory is that it's a combination of two things: you DNQ too much for my liking and the songs that I felt were worthy of qualifying (see: Said The Sky) don't end up getting the long term appreciation that qualifiers end up getting, and thus your only qualifier was the only song that could get points from me. And I kinda liked "Pass Out" - the chorus sounds like a punkified "Faster Kill Pussycat" and that was pretty much in line with my tastes so that's good. Said The Sky has grown on me a bit now that I've found other songs of the same caliber that I've gotten into. And the Relient K song was cute. And then everything else was kind of a blur. Bear's Den kinda sounded like something out of a Teen Wolf scene, and then I barely remember the other three. So... keep doing what you're doing and eventually something will click.
2017 Onwards: Well I guess Copeland would have been a bit higher in my ranking had it not been such an overtly strong contest, but I'm not yet fully immersed into the Hot Topic aesthetic yet

Aside from that the Karizma ONE track was pretty wistful and trashy, and Henri PFR passed me by.
2017 Onwards: I feel really bad for having Tension just missing out on points for me and it would have really helped with giving you another qualifier (why does drum n bass have a horrible track record as of recently?), but those points will come someday. I have to repay you for supporting "Leave This Place".

Aheheheheh this is awkward.

An assortment of MOR (which I HATE) but more teenybopper and Radio Disney fodder (which is fine for me). I was expecting the likes of Greyson/Ryan (despite his generic indie voice, he kinda sounds like Denny White tho)/maaaaaaaybe Sing Street cast on a good day, but everything else was either underwhelming, forgettable, or just downright boring. I recently found that Hayden Calnin has better material than what was sent to the contest (and even then that was more of Teen Wolf speaking). White Night Ghosts is basically white noise, the Jeremy Messersmith/StrangeFaces/JESSARAE songs I can't remember at all. "Homeland" was pretty underwhelming, I really like Chord's voice but I'm just not feeling this James Bay-lite style, and Electrisk was everything I hated about prepubescent singers but a lot less cheesy. Maybe because it's in a foreign language and therefore doesn't sound as try hard as the likes of Matty B and Jacob Sartorius. Don't take this the wrong way, Jack, you're good when you want to be (hi Andra Day) but it's a bit too... ehhhhhhh? Other than that I just don't wanna see you languish in the final too much.
2017 Onwards: Handsome Poets is a step in the right direction, but still a semi bottom 3 languisher.

Stuff like NZCA Lines + Nimmo to an extent inspired me to send something dark like "You Settle Me", and Xpander was pretty cool sounding. Lite Spots grew on me a bit more after the contest because it kinda sounded funky (and in a YouTube ad way), and then the last ones I can give or take. Doctor Blind is on a high rise for now and I'm aching for another appointment. Boy would Bruno and Carrie Ann love to hear that Len Goodman remix

Geez now I really have to repay you for pointing "Never Stop" lmao. The narrative of my opinions to a typical Desbuanda song is usually "okay, one and done", which has been the case most of the time. Soz but sometimes that's just how it is. There are some other songs that seem to break this pattern of indifference: Catalyse was pretty cool sounding and I ended up giving Matadora more of a chance thanks to getting into Drinkee. And of course whatever the hell was going on in the LSDXOXO song was nice, a pretty nice surprise of a qualifier. Cross My Mind was also decent. Daniel and 2 Young were just there IMO, even moreso with Brushstroke, and I have no idea what people saw in Lilyer. And then there's Ngaiire which was pretty doomed anyway, it's still easily in my least favorite entries of the year.
2017 Onwards: Listening to "Radio" again, it sounds very catchy, and very much in the Popjustice frame.

You had "Discipline" which is quite easily one of the best entries ever but then you just kinda faded into obscurity after that. It's weird seeing this switch off between having tons of success to just being there. Interestingly I liked CAPPA's track the most despite the underwhelming drop - everything else was excellent. L.E.J was also pretty iconic. The others were either just there or boring as hell. The stuff like Cosima/Irem Derici/Mashrou' Leila/Stalking Gia/Sacred Spirit sounded cool but didn't really add anything to the listening experience. I barely remember Hessian and the Nneka song and I don't know what people were thinking with My Moon. I'm sorry but how did that qualify over Terror Jr?
2017 Onwards: I'm kinda digging Beautiful Crime and I think it's pretty good TV show trailer music. The Orphan Black connections really helped with the atmosphere.

Surprisingly, the break really rejuvenated your spirit in this contest because this is a country that puts out some really nice tunes when needed, and I have absolutely no problem with all three entries. FRENSHIP was pretty nice despite not getting any points from me, same with Foreign Air, relatively epic and just my type of song. Echos was a bit less but I still liked it.
2017 Onwards: I don't think I really get Ten Fé as much as the other entries but I'm confident that you have some nice songs up your sleeve.

I remember you saying in the voting history thread that you wanted to get more points from me and I'M TRYING OKAY. Your songs either rub off on me quickly (Emoji), or I get into them too late (like half of these songs). And the sad thing is that most of these seem pretty geared to what I like. I'm Not Your Lady I definitely loved and gave points to and I think Emoji landed in your commiserations. Then there's the likes of Es Rappelt I'm Karton which I only started getting into thanks to my entry for 88, T S I E R which I got into thanks to Halloween Horror Nights, Ilumnarada for being great study music, and Error for being kinda quirky and cute, it just took time for me to find a version that wasn't blocked in the US. And KOLAJ was pretty decent too, I like her more recent stuff more. Same with Theia, I wish it wasn't so chilled though. Just keep trying Rich, you'll get to me eventually.

I remember being really into Perfume's offering for the contest and then getting slightly into "Don't Wait Up" but not translating into points, but nothing else has clicked with me ever since. Which is sad because someone with your range of genres at least has something to appeal to me. "Anywhere I Go" ended up being pretty disappointing, as were the same with "Always" & "Lowlife". "Waves" was always shaping up to be pretty decent but it ended up passing me by, and I guess Alle Farben was also pretty cool. I've somehow forgotten how the others went. You came pretty close to winning me over and that was with The Girl & The Dreamcatcher, a duo I've been eyeing since October 2015, with something a bit more pop than the track I was talking about. Dove sounded excellent as per usual, so that made me happy. I know you have it in you to come with something, I need to repay you for being one of my biggest fans (possibly my biggest if you give me another 13-15 and Harry gives me close to nothing again).

I guess the narrative for you this year was "so close but so far". The majority of these offerings were great but not outstanding and the ones that I felt were worth pointing ended up getting the shaft in a pretty strong lineup. I guess out of the DNQ's Spacecats was ok but the overall feel was underwhelming for the type of song that it was. Indaqo and the Condimente song also deserved better than they got. Long story short, a lot more franticness and less of whatever Ward Thomas was.
2017 Onwards: Honestly, Austra would have gotten about 5 points if it were in a regular quality contest.

Probably the most notable snub in the top 150 as far as countries go. I was pretty impressed with N DNTN this time around. Managing to get into my commiserations was pretty tough, let alone getting points. Shhh was a crushing commiseration although if I gave it one point it wouldn't have made a difference anyway. That's the sad thing about hosting - my votes come first so it's easy to compile Kitty/Plaitum/to a lesser extent Nadia Tehran were also unlucky in their contests. And then came the one time I did point you, the haunting daycore track "Socila", a nice twist on hardstyle that I never would have expected to sound... good?

And the likes of Vanessa Elisha & the other Crywolf song were pretty good despite not grabbing me all the way (I kinda liked Vanessa more than Crywolf). And of course there was Gina Kushka, the song that grabbed attention from the start. I'm pretty sure you will treasure that moment I pointed you.
2017 Onwards: White Lung was okay, a bit standard Taahino but weaker but I think we can work with this.

What I normally expect out of Sandeborg is the likes of Lisa Ajax, which isn't a bad thing at all, it's just that it's the typical Sandeborg strategy that won't really grab anyone other than the pop bloc, the Scandi bloc and I guess Jordan. And with others it's a bit hit or miss. Like Golden was just something that didn't really need to happen. Bad Girlfriend was even worse. But sometimes this type of bubblegum pop tends to creep on me. Work Like Beyonce was very Dawin and was a bit of a guilty pleasure, Ohlayindigo was subdued and light, and I understood the appeal to Peg Parnevik and SMILO (the latter more for being a clone of The Nights). Revolution was just epic. Amazing global message (which frankly should be applied today), amazing FIFA tribal drum backing, and it's bubblegum without being bubblegum at all. I salute you.
2017 Onwards: I see you're coming back for this contest so I'm hopeful that you may have a bit of a banger up your sleeve.

Aaaaand the rest I can take or leave. Idk. But I'm pretty sure some recognition to Tartford should be coming soon with this trajectory. Kinda more of the same here. Odal was kind of in the same realm as Ilumbarada in that it was good study music and... I get the stuff like alright and Wait For You despite them being rather weak dance tracks, and then the rest I never can really give an opinion on. Hmmmm.

Country Yearbook Write-Ups:

Persephonia:
I consider Persephonia as the base line for the standard off the rails hipster track that normal audiophiles such as myself wouldn't normally discover on a daily basis. And if I ever feel the need of experimentation, Bray's support is one I would look to, even if that means a disastrous flop (which has happened TWICE). Sadly that hasn't translated into points that often. I feel like they should considering that some of them either do have mainstream appeal (Color Guard) or implement some sort of doppelgänger sound (Øfdream as a Drake/Futute instrumental). Maybe "Figurine" applies to this as well, kinda sounds like an Urban track that would end up getting a few adds on US Urban radio and nothing else. The bottom two were a mess, Water Frozen was pretty delightful but with the contest getting a lot stronger, you have to be almost perfect, and Vlasy sounded pretty cool lyrically. Luckily the first two entries showed that the #Corsephonia crossover isn't dead: "Blitz", which was brilliant and still managed to be true to the sound, and the biggest 2016 crossover, "The Wandering Songstress", something that was so off the rails it just made sense.
2017 Onwards: And if there's anything you've learned about me, a Bemani artist will rack up major points from me. Thank GOD I'm not the only one sending them. "Colder" is also pretty amazing too.

Poor poor Lewis. DNQ'd all but twice and almost every single DNQ was followed with failing to vote and getting banned from the contest after. Not as much love than with Anne-Marie but whatever came through your mind with the entries that ended up in this countdown... GENIUS. As for the rest of the tracks, Wild Belle was boring af, Fethers I completely forgot about after listening to the first 30 seconds, and Flux Pavillion was a bit disappointing. Recover I managed to point and it sounded like the typical UK underground dance scene. As for the ones that DID make it, So Are You was unique and something that I didn't expect to make to the final, it kinda reminded me of a more jungle-influenced Lane Boy. One Night was fab and something that reminds me of Riverdale now, and of course Jauz, an artist I considered way back, and the one track I was convinced would qualify out of 88. That build-up is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. What the hell were people thinking with that?
2017 Onwards: I'm personally glad you're seeing more success with your Pete Tong rejects, I Heard Love in particular was stellar and deserved to be as decently-sized as it was. Sälen seems a bit more subdued, so good luck with that

With last month bringing in a record breaking third top 10 in a row and the end of shooting for Teen Wolf having passed a few days ago, we're feeling a little antsy. But that's not gonna stop us from delivering the goods. Polish DJ Gromee continues this trend of "we don't really have a plan so we're just gonna send something that fits the aesthetic" that's been going on for 2017. Expectations are ranging from 8th to midtable (and the last time we were there was when Wave Racer made 27th). Also let it be known that the last time we were in South Danaelanda, we got to our lowest position yet. But with a somewhat favorable semi, will it all change? Let's hope for the best, okay?

Also of note is an upcoming online video game competition showcase featuring the best of Blizzard Entertainment, including Overwatch, Heroes Of The Storm, and Starcraft 2: Legacy Of The Void. Gromee is scheduled to promote this song during the event at the end of March.

Deandria:
Quirky, dreamy, interesting. That's what I get from the Deandrian aesthetic. And normally they're songs I'd expect Mattias to send. Sooooooo something like the first four months + Maya's Moving Castle. Interestingly I got really excited by Deandria during the last two 2016 contests, with Clement Bazin and Vogel, my two favorites of you guys by far (with Daya at a close third). Vogel was obviously the best, a Dirty Androids-esque retrosynth track and that was always gonna get my attention. Then we have "With You" which was also grabbing but missed out on points during the semi "Alchemy" comes in third, the way it switches from a creepy pop tune to a classy waltz ballad is both an interesting juxtaposition and something that actually works. And Tzlil was basic pop that is done right. The next few are okay, I did like Blackbriar enough for it to get a pretty high score for me but I didn't point it in the end and I kinda forgot about the contest as a whole so never really got back to it, from what I remember it sounded like an Evanescence track so right on. Not entirely sure why Allie X passed me by, and Ecca Vandal more or less the same as Allie. Still glad you got a winner anyway. And the rest I just kinda forgot about. But you get the gist.

As you can tell from what happened during semi results I'm still bitter about Conner Youngblood not qualifying. There's always that one TA song that grabs me and knocks me out (and eventually becomes one of my potentials, see Coyote Kisses with "Ferrari" and "Waiting For You"), and this time it was Fortress. I knew of Illenium from his remix of "Operate" by Kill Paris (yay more of my past potentials) and hearing more of the songs that Chez sent to me was giving me more hype for that. Other than that, Plummet missed out on points from me, Better Life was pretty cool, Apples was super weird but okay, and I have a soft spot for Ulay Oh for some reason. The rest were either too indie for me or in the case of Travelling Light had this really weird breakdown that absolutely ruins an otherwise amazing song. NEVER AGAIN.

here's my personal opinions

"Tacadum" - well I always love an instrumental trance entry and this one is quite good and engaging throughout (aside, there is a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPx3xIpmXXE available)
"Agolo" - tropical house is always nice and the non-English vocals help this to stand out amongst the Spotify flavoured ones, enjoying this myself
"Want You More" - okay but I personally wouldn't choose this
"Bittersweet" - I already know and like this, quite generic but nonetheless very energetic and does its job well
"Hitchhike" - Quite nice if you're going for the pop crowd, would probably pick up only a few from me at best

Hitchhike is a decent follow up to The Touch but I don't feel like it's anywhere as effective as that song (but then I'm biased!) and I feel it would be top 20 at best.

I'm really liking Agolo, as Dan said it stands out with the vocals and it's good fun. Tacadum is really good too! Either or both could smash if the wind blows in the right way.

I wasn't really into the other two on first listen.

i love bittersweet V much but theres no way it would do that well imo seems doomed for the bottom end of the semi

Stranger things have happened with deep house. "I Heard Love" was a minor hit and I think a bunch of people (myself included) thought it would do badly.

Thanks for your inputs you guys! I'm pretty stuck on two but if anything else I'll just end up sending both in consecutive months

Backstage Access Episode 21: Focus On The Love

Track: "Agolo"



After the 80's route went awry, our path became convoluted and we didn't understand why. Looking at the world, I realized something:

We need to be reminded of what united us the most.

Enter French-African producer BGRZ who reworks the famous "Agolo" by Beninese singer-songwriter and activist Angelique Kidjo by sprinkling a tropical pop beat similar to Starley's "Call On Me". In Yoruba, this is the third foreign language offering sent to the main contest after Snow Tha Product's Spanglish offering "Nuestra Cancion" (btw happy Cinco De Mayo!) and Sasi's German vocals in Nhato's "Way of Life". Foreign language songs have normally been the Achilles heel of Cor Lupus, but hopefully this will change.

Here is what Angelique Kidjo said about creating the original years ago:

A performance dedicated to the beauty of African culture will also be showcased during the semi and final performance, choreographed by Dancing With The Stars' Keo Motsepe.

Let's focus on love. Let's focus on unity. Let's release the garbage from our lives and make us clean and whole.

Well done Cody for doing basically the opposite of last month ~ this time doing way better than you were projected! This was a lovely lil earworm and a grower from semi 1, I suspect it may have got more points if I had more than one listen of the final but sadly couldn't this month. Anyway, points are points so yay that I gave you some for the first time this year!
