Personally, I like the more recent stuff way more than anything on their second album, which came across as an attempt to replicate the successes of the first and did so in a wholly ineffective way. I think they've developed as musicians a lot in the intervening years, so whilst their new sound isn't necessarily 'edgy' it does show progression.
There's a pretty interesting article here which looks at the direct and indirect influence of The XX's music on other artists. For me, when you listen to their first album and look back at it now, you can appreciate the originality and freshness it brought, and I think the influence it had can be seen elsewhere. You only need to look at the success that Jamie has had as a writer and producer to note how pervasive the XX's style has become. This post has been edited by jonny: 8th January 2017, 12:14 PM |

Such an impressive progression from them! Love how upbeat it all is with some stunning production. Keep going back to 'Dangerous', definitely a highlight of the album.

*.* Rate after listen 2: 08 Dangerous 10 Say Something Loving 10 Lips 06 A Violent Noise 09 Performance 09 Replica 07 Brave For You 11 On Hold 10 I Dare You 07 Test Me A bit of a loon rate but I can't help it I had really high expectations for this so I'm sooooo glad I wasn't left disappointed. 'Lips' could potentially take the 11 off 'On Hold' in time, they're both absolutely stellar. This is going to be on repeat for ages. |

I haven't given this a proper listen yet, but I saw the physical copies yesterday and I didn't even realise it was this at first!
I'd assumed the cover would be like the digital cover, but it's actually all silver. It does make sense for it to be foil blocked I guess (and the digital version with the band is a nice touch), just took me by surprise! |

Serious obsessed with this, I streamed it as soon as it was released and didn't think much of it but listened again and I'm hooked so purchased.
I loved their debut but after being hyped for the follow up it was a bit of a let down but this is such a return to form - so many good tracks - Performance, Replica, On Hold etc., Pleased to see 'On Hold' taking off again on iTunes too. |

This album is amazing, I have to agree with Jade, A Violent Noise is probably the weakest track on the album for me, On Hold still remains the standout track. Surely this album could be hotly tipped to win the Mercury Prize of 2017, later in the year, if this album does not get nominated I would be very cheesed off.
