Had to vote for Saturday night divas but it was a tie with NGUOTGT

Saturday Night Divas but almost voted for Spice Up Your Life ohmy.gif

I know Spice Up Your Life is one oftheir main anthems but I think the other songs stand the test of time better *and* are better songs as a whole. SUYL at the moment only edges it because of my emotional attachment to it based on it being released when I was 11 and obsessed with the Spice Girls, rather than for how good it is (and it is very good!).... Plus, I never really got over that unintentionally racist line 'yellow man in Timbuktu, colour for me and you'... It's such a sour note on the legacy of the song and they could have EASILY changed it last year during the tour after a lot of online criticism around it. It feels wrong to still be using it nowadays (not that it was better then, but come on...).

It's hard though. The only bad song in this album is Do It and now that that is over, it's so hard to make a choice here... Saturday Night Divas is classy, gorgeous and personally one of their best album tracks. It's been criminally forgotten live, in my opinion...

Never understood why it didnt make the setlist in Spiceworld Tour 1997, when they were performing bside Walk of Life (wtf!) and bad covers like Where Did Our Love Go and Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves... rolleyes.gif

I always felt Never Give Up on the Good Times would have made a good single.

Agree it would have been a fab single still never got why they didn't release it as a double a-side with Viva Forever, it would fit really nicely on the GH too.

I do love it but it's time for me to vote for Saturday Night Divas.

I know this isn't the main point of what you're saying, just interjecting to say that the lyric is 'colourful' rather than 'colour for'!

Too Much again *eyes*

We cant stay awake through it either.

Spice Up Your Life.

I know it's one of their signature songs (probably *the* signature song bar Wannabe) but my god it's grating. I think even as a 5 year old Spice boy I always started the album on track 2 to skip it. laugh.gif Great to see SND and NGUOTGT being the two remaining album tracks.

SUYL would have been bigger if their video wasn't so dark and quite scary for kids at the time.

The girls wanted the video to be a set at a big carnival but Virgin opted for what we got. The girls were so overworked and tired at the time they didn't argue.

I do like the Spice Up Your Life video as it is.

It's my fave video and song from them.

Spice up your life is their best video wub.gif I think it gives the song a more mature vibe, the carnival vibe would have made it even cheesier than it is.

It would've been epic. During their prime I'd rather trust the girls than Virgin, they also knew Wannabe should be the one introducing them to the world while Virgin favoured Say You'll There/Love Thing.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 31st March 2020, 01:01 AM

If say you'll be there was the debut things would have been very different and they wouldnt have turned into the biggest stars they became.

I like the Spice Up Your Life video, it's so dark in tone and rather weird... it makes for a very interesting entry in their run of music videos.

I actually think there's an ever so slightly sinister vibe to the song's production that the music video compliments. The instrumental has never really made me think of a carnival setting / sunshine / bright colours... it's quite a juxtaposition considering that the lyrical content is uplifting.

Posted by: JaneJ 31st March 2020, 02:55 AM

I find it a bit insulting that spice world had become so dark and sad while in reality the arrival of the spice girls brought us so much joy and brighter world, the girls knew it. The lead single video should have been more friendly to general public, you can be interesting later in your second video. Twenty plus years later there is nothing iconic about it while people still remember and talking about Viva Forever and Stop videos.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 31st March 2020, 04:00 AM

I would say the Spice Girls inside the spaceship, and zooming around the city on those hover boards, are amongst the most memorable moments in Spice Girls music videos!

Posted by: Scene 31st March 2020, 09:49 AM

I agree with whoever suggested a carnival theme would've suited the song more. I find the SUYL video more a showcase of their success than anything else - which may have been the point laugh.gif - but it doesn't make me want to replay it. Too Much is probably my favourite video from the Spiceworld era though. The videos for their first album were so much better in general imo.

Saturday night divas is a clear goner now.
