BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ 2020 Predictions

Posted by: dancember Dec 17 2019, 01:36 PM

Will we get an Adele album?
Who will sing the next James Bond film theme?
Is Rihanna coming back?
Will LadBaby get a third Cmas number one?
Who else do you predict to have a good year and who will flop?
What new chart rule will the OCC introduce?

Any other questions ask below and we’ll try to predict and then see how we did at the end of the year.

Ellie Goulding will have a good year

Posted by: Pigs in Blankets Dec 17 2019, 07:05 PM

James Bond theme... wait for it... Ed Sheeran nocheer.gif

Posted by: Medellíam Dec 17 2019, 07:17 PM

I fail to see what Ed Sheeran could bring to a Bond theme. He doesn't have the voice and none of his music resembles the grand scale of Bond music.

I get that the Bond producers have been moving towards current big names but at least Adele and Sam Smith were fitting choices. The only "of the moment" pop singer I could see potentially pulling one off would be Dua Lipa who was rumoured not so long back. I'd rather have someone like Lana Del Rey or Florence + the Machine though or perhaps allow Muse or Radiohead to finally be given it.

Posted by: WhoChristmassy Dec 17 2019, 07:40 PM

There will be a new Arctic Monkeys album which will return them to a rock sound, I'd say probably like Suck It and See.

Posted by: Shepeteherd Dec 17 2019, 08:01 PM

OCC massively change up the charts in January, hopefully by introducing a streaming cap of 10:1 and scrapping ACR.
Drake will release a new single early in the year and get a multi-week #1 out of it, simultaneously blocking the (Dua Lipa) Bond theme from the Top spot.
Burna Boy will tailor his new music (if he's releasing some) to the UK market and hence have his breakthrough solo hit.
Juice WRLD will get a posthumous Top 10.
The Euro 2020 anthem by Martin Garrix will feature Anne-Marie or someone equally uninspiring and hence he'll get a Top 10 hit out of it.
There will be a collaboration between at least two members of One Direction, most likely Louis and Liam, and it will soar into the Top 10 despite the fact that neither of them are able to even get a Top 100 solo hit by themselves any more as we've all forgotten about them.

I'll try and think of some predictions soon so I have something to look back on next year and see how psychic I was cool.gif

Regarding Ed Sheeran I agree with your statement, Lana Del Rey or Florence + the Machine sounds ideal to me, Muse would also be an excellent contender.

"Tones And I" will not have a single entry into the top 20

Aitch will have a #1 single either as a lead artist or a featured artist

The charts will continue to be boring and the longest running #1 will be 10 weeks long

It will be December 2020 when you read this post after you totally forgot it ever existed biggrin.gif

Posted by: Jordan Lee Dec 17 2019, 09:57 PM

I think 2020 will be way more exciting tbh.

I can see Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Bieber, Bruno Mars, Adele and The Weeknd all releasing an album.

I can see Rihanna may potentially shock with her album.

Ariana won’t release a solo album but I think she’ll be a featured artist on a moderately successful track.

Camilas Romance album will stabilise.

Jess Glynne will get a UK #1 again.

Cheryl will release at least one new single but no new album.

Ed will have yet another big hit but no new album from him.

Dua will get a UK #1 album.

Selena will get a UK top ten album finally.

Stormzy will be the first #1 of 2020 on both singles and albums.

Taylor Swifts Lover album will outsell reputation.

Streaming ratios will change yet again!

Gaga will come back and dominate x

All of these were predicted last year as well biggrin.gif The Weeknd's album will presumably definitely be happening though and surely at least a couple of the others will finally show up as well.

Posted by: SamJudd Dec 17 2019, 10:30 PM

My predictions for Taylor Swift - she'll release more "Lover" singles 'Cruel Summer', 'The Man', 'Cornelia Street' & 'Miss Havana & The Heartbreak Prince' (in this order) and maybe 'Paper Rings' wedged somewhere in between and bring new life to the album & become a consistent seller throughout the year and outsell 'Reputation'.

Post-album singles are near enough a thing of the past now (apart from songs being pushed on the same week their parent album comes out if that counts), zero chance she'll push more than 1 or 2 if that. And even if she does they won't turn into hits, highly doubt 'The Man' or 'Cruel Summer' would be able to beat their existing peaks. There's a prediction from me x

Posted by: dobcember Dec 18 2019, 12:02 AM

Roxanne will be the Barking of 2020* and get a few weeks at #2 without topping the Chart.

Billie Eilish first UK #1 but as a feature.

Second year in a row with no dance #1 single.

Ne-Yo returns with a surprise top 10.

LadBaby scores a hat-trick of Xmas #1s.

Posted by: Bjork Dec 18 2019, 09:44 AM

Lots of big artists should come back this year, really curious to see if Rihanna and Gaga deliver... Gaga has had some great songs recently but all have been downtempo ballads, so curious she can have another pop dance hit again like her early hits

No one has mentioned it but Lana del Rey is supposed to have a new album in 2020, called White Hot Forever

Also Frank Ocean could drop his new album any day now

on the downside, sure Drake will come back :/ and I guess Ed Sheeran too :/

wonder if George Ezra will also come back this year? He took it pretty slowly between 1st and 2nd album...

Posted by: Djcheekymagpie Dec 18 2019, 09:49 AM

Hope Gerry cinnamon get top 40 singles next year
Ladbaby does not come back at Christmas
Lee taub get on dance compilation album

Posted by: M4NGO HO HO Dec 18 2019, 10:03 AM

I'm rubbish at predictions but the one thing I will predict is that Ladbaby will get a third consecutive Christmas #1. I'll also predict number one singles by Drake, Ed Sheeran, Calvin Harris, Adele and Justin Bieber. Rihanna will probably miss out, she's not as big as she once was.

Posted by: SKOB Dec 18 2019, 10:29 AM

Drake's recent single missed out too. Just saying, nothing is guaranteed.

Posted by: ___∆___ Dec 18 2019, 12:51 PM

Sam Fender will win 2 Brit awards, his album will go platinum and he’ll get 2 Top 10 singles.

Posted by: davidas Dec 18 2019, 03:18 PM

Hope Gaga will dominate the charts

Posted by: SKOB Dec 18 2019, 05:57 PM

I'm a stan but she won't "dominate" for sure, but top 5 hit and a #1 album would be nice!

Posted by: Shepeteherd Dec 18 2019, 07:06 PM

I'll also add to my predictions that the next Tones & I single to get a 'proper' push will be Johnny Run Away as opposed to Never Seen The Rain but it will still go low Top 40 at best.

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 Dec 18 2019, 11:16 PM

The OCC have an announcement in January and I predict it'll be that Xmas songs will be band from the chart next Xmas with a new seasonal chart for Xmas songs over 3 years old.

Posted by: Michael Bubré Dec 18 2019, 11:28 PM

I predict that it's not going to be that. x I'm gonna guess it'll just be some further tweaking of the streaming formula or something, I really don't think they're just going to suddenly ban all Christmas songs now when they've happily put up with them for this long.

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 Dec 18 2019, 11:55 PM

Maybe they have seen that the current rules haven't restricted the Christmas songs over consecutive seasons.

But your right as they faked this before they knew the effect of this Xmas.

How do you think they will tweek the ratios if they do?

Posted by: Bjork Dec 19 2019, 07:27 AM

Maybe they are gonna do something with playlists?
A different ratio?

Posted by: Jack Dec 19 2019, 07:33 AM

Little Mix will release a new album and single but it won't do well, and end up being their last studio album

Pussycat Dolls will release their single which doesn't even make Top 40 to the shock of everyone on here despite being amazing

Drake will release an album and get at least two long running #01's that dominate the chart early in the year

Posted by: tgl92 Dec 19 2019, 07:46 AM

Lewis Capaldi or Ellie Goulding for the Bond theme

Posted by: WhoChristmassy Dec 19 2019, 07:59 AM

I'm still fairly certain it'll be Dua Lipa after what Mikey from Years & Years said.

I think upon hearing it being a really good song and it being the hype of their comeback, people will expect it to do well but I think it'll fail spectacularly even if it is really good. I imagine radio and Spotify won't really touch them.

Posted by: Bjork Dec 19 2019, 09:21 AM

Dua is a great fit for the James Bond
Ellie too and her label could make it happen
Lana would be even better, the best fit

Worst would be Ed or Lewis, they have zero glamour and dont fit at all

I'm not sure if that's even true, if I'm honest. I know she's been away for a very long time but I feel like her name power is still just as massive.

Posted by: dancember Dec 19 2019, 04:14 PM

Rihanna is the 39th most listened to artist on Spotify at the moment, and that's with her last release being 'Lemon' with N.E.R.D. 2 years ago!
Her return will be massively hyped.

Posted by: Jack Dec 19 2019, 04:17 PM

Why can I see another year of no music from her … I wouldn't even be surprised if 'Anti' was her last studio album tbh :')

Posted by: LMLou Dec 19 2019, 04:22 PM

I can see Rihanna releasing like a small EP or a couple experimental singles but I just can't see her doing another standard album release for a while yet

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Dec 19 2019, 04:33 PM

It's crazy to think at the start of the decade she was basically releasing an album every week!

Posted by: Michael Bubré Dec 19 2019, 04:57 PM

I think she will come back eventually for at least one more album but it's clear her priorities lie elsewhere at the moment. A bit like Justin Timberlake's gap in music releases while he was focusing on trying to be an actor.

Posted by: Bjork Dec 19 2019, 05:15 PM

I think a Rihanna comeback is imminent, hasn't she done a double album, first one dancehall second more dance?

Posted by: Michael Bubré Dec 19 2019, 05:17 PM

That rumour goes back to at least http://www.highsnobiety.com/p/rihanna-two-albums-on-the-way/, there's no actual sign they're any closer now than they were then laugh.gif

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 Dec 19 2019, 07:53 PM

Is she an actor now instead?

Posted by: mic1812 Dec 19 2019, 08:47 PM

Marc Almond to get a top 20 album in 2019.

Elvis presley new recordings found

Hopefully more dance music and rock and metal and less urban hits

Small independent film to be the soundtrack of the year

Yes, it will be big in Sweden, Switzerland and Germany but not in the UK charts. angel.gif

My predictions:

- Anne Marie will be back with a huge UK top 10 hit this year.
- A new british group will be massive in the US charts.
- A male singer (not british) will have a great year in the UK charts - his name starts with a 'J'
- Ariana Grande will have a Drake 2019 year (flop)
- Scotland will leave the UK and their official chart will be so much better than the UK charts. laugh.gif

Posted by: Bré Jan 1 2020, 06:10 PM

Drake had quite a successful year in 2019 considering he barely released anything new (only 2 proper new songs excluding features, both went top 40 and one was a reasonably big hit). Even got a top 5 album with a collection of old unreleased songs. I don't think Ariana is going to even release anything in 2020 apart from maybe a feature or two, it'd be good going for her if she has chart success even remotely comparable to Drake's 2019. x

Who will sing the next James Bond film theme? Billie Eilish
Is Rihanna coming back? Yes
Will LadBaby get a third Cmas number one? No

Posted by: Jordan Lee Jan 1 2020, 09:19 PM

That's a good guess for who will do the next Bond Theme, her style is moody and atmospheric which goes with Bond Themes but I think there is a danger her whispery vocal style will get lost in the orchestration.

It's more likely to be someone like Lewis Capaldi or Tom Walker this time I think.

Let's see how we've done so far as I'm bored

"Ellie Goulding will have a good year"
She might get a #1 album this week but aside from that it's kind of hard to pass off this year as 'good' for her. x

"James Bond theme... wait for it... Ed Sheeran"
Nope.

"There will be a new Arctic Monkeys album which will return them to a rock sound, I'd say probably like Suck It and See."
Still not happened yet.

"OCC massively change up the charts in January, hopefully by introducing a streaming cap of 10:1 and scrapping ACR."
Surprisingly not really been any significant changes to OCC rules (were there even any minor changes?) even around the time they usually do midway through the year.

"Drake will release a new single early in the year and get a multi-week #1 out of it, simultaneously blocking the (Dua Lipa) Bond theme from the Top spot."
We got a Drake single and it hit #1 but only for a week. Dua Bond theme was a nope.

"Burna Boy will tailor his new music (if he's releasing some) to the UK market and hence have his breakthrough solo hit."
Sadly not. His most recent singles are good stuff tho. x

"Juice WRLD will get a posthumous Top 10."
Yup. 2 of them in fact.

"The Euro 2020 anthem by Martin Garrix will feature Anne-Marie or someone equally uninspiring and hence he'll get a Top 10 hit out of it."
Euro 2020? What's that?

"There will be a collaboration between at least two members of One Direction, most likely Louis and Liam, and it will soar into the Top 10 despite the fact that neither of them are able to even get a Top 100 solo hit by themselves any more as we've all forgotten about them."
Not happened yet, but partly right in calling Louis failing to get top 100 solo hits.

""Tones And I" will not have a single entry into the top 20"
Not yet, thankfully.

"Aitch will have a #1 single either as a lead artist or a featured artist"
Came close with 'Rain' but not quite.

"The charts will continue to be boring and the longest running #1 will be 10 weeks long"
Longest #1 is 8 weeks so far.

"It will be December 2020 when you read this post after you totally forgot it ever existed"
Incorrect. It's July 2020 that I'm reading this after totally forgetting it ever existed.

"I can see Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Bieber, Bruno Mars, Adele and The Weeknd all releasing an album."
3/6 so far.

"I can see Rihanna may potentially shock with her album."
Shocking the world by continuing to not release anything except a mediocre song with PARTYNEXTDOOR.

"Ariana won’t release a solo album but I think she’ll be a featured artist on a moderately successful track."
No solo album yet. She was featured (well, joint lead) on a song that was a bit more than moderately successful. x

"Camilas Romance album will stabilise."
It did for a few weeks but has not been seen in the top 100 since the end of March.

"Jess Glynne will get a UK #1 again."
Might still happen but she's not released anything yet.

"Cheryl will release at least one new single but no new album."
Total silence so far.

"Ed will have yet another big hit but no new album from him."
His only release so far was an Eminem feature that fizzled out within days.

"Dua will get a UK #1 album."
Ding ding.

"Selena will get a UK top ten album finally."
Ding ding (even as high as #2).

"Stormzy will be the first #1 of 2020 on both singles and albums."
He did get the first new #1 on both charts, but missed out to Capaldi for the first #1 album overall, so 75% right I guess.

"Taylor Swifts Lover album will outsell reputation."
I don't think this has happened? Not sure though xx

"Streaming ratios will change yet again!"
Not yet.

"Gaga will come back and dominate x"
Correct depending on how liberal your definition of 'dominate' is. (SKOB later commented "I'm a stan but she won't "dominate" for sure, but top 5 hit and a #1 album would be nice!" - I guess she dominated more than that at least!)

"My predictions for Taylor Swift - she'll release more "Lover" singles 'Cruel Summer', 'The Man', 'Cornelia Street' & 'Miss Havana & The Heartbreak Prince' (in this order) and maybe 'Paper Rings' wedged somewhere in between and bring new life to the album & become a consistent seller throughout the year and outsell 'Reputation'."
As I rebutted at the time, not even remotely close to happening. We got 'The Man' as a single but it made little impact. The album is sticking around consistently but not super high up, mostly floating around the 30s and 40s.

"Roxanne will be the Barking of 2020* and get a few weeks at #2 without topping the Chart."
Peaked at #4.

"Billie Eilish first UK #1 but as a feature."
Correct but not as a feature.

"Second year in a row with no dance #1 single."
'Roses' got to #1, 'Head & Heart' likely will too.

"Ne-Yo returns with a surprise top 10."
He released a single the other week. Did anyone notice?

"LadBaby scores a hat-trick of Xmas #1s."
Jury remains out but let's hope not.

"Also Frank Ocean could drop his new album any day now"
Frank Ocean never drops.

"wonder if George Ezra will also come back this year? He took it pretty slowly between 1st and 2nd album..."
Not yet.

"Hope Gerry cinnamon get top 40 singles next year"
He did, barely.

"number one singles by Drake, Ed Sheeran, Calvin Harris, Adele and Justin Bieber. Rihanna will probably miss out, she's not as big as she once was."
1/5 so far, 2/6 including the prediction that Rihanna won't get a #1 (although there is still time).

"Sam Fender will win 2 Brit awards, his album will go platinum and he’ll get 2 Top 10 singles."
Nominated for one award and didn't win. Album is still only gold afaia. Hasn't even had a top 40 single yet sadly.

"I'll also add to my predictions that the next Tones & I single to get a 'proper' push will be Johnny Run Away as opposed to Never Seen The Rain but it will still go low Top 40 at best."
Debatable if she's really properly pushed anything. Or maybe she did and people just took no notice.

"The OCC have an announcement in January and I predict it'll be that Xmas songs will be band from the chart next Xmas with a new seasonal chart for Xmas songs over 3 years old."
Did they even make an announcement in the end? I don't remember. It wasn't that anyway. x

"Maybe they are gonna do something with playlists?"
Nope. Probably not ever happening. xx

"Little Mix will release a new album and single but it won't do well, and end up being their last studio album"
No album yet but their single did pretty well so positive thoughts.

"Pussycat Dolls will release their single which doesn't even make Top 40 to the shock of everyone on here despite being amazing"
Not only it did go top 40 but it actually stuck around in the chart for quite a while! ('Being amazing' I'm not sure about tho xx)

"Drake will release an album and get at least two long running #01's that dominate the chart early in the year"
Dropped a mixtape which spawned a single 1 week #1 and only one other top 10 hit. He does have another album coming later this year though.

"Lewis Capaldi or Ellie Goulding for the Bond theme"
Nope x2

"I'm still fairly certain it'll be Dua Lipa after what Mikey from Years & Years said."
Mikey was lying.

"Adele could do the bond theme again. Shirley did it a few times."
Still nope.

"Why can I see another year of no music from her … I wouldn't even be surprised if 'Anti' was her last studio album tbh :')"
More and more likely by the day.

"I think a Rihanna comeback is imminent, hasn't she done a double album, first one dancehall second more dance?"
Still no sign of these ever happening.

"Marc Almond to get a top 20 album in 2019."
Dropped an album, got to #35. (Assuming this meant 2020 ofc xx)

"Elvis presley new recordings found"
Nope.

"Hopefully more dance music and rock and metal and less urban hits"
Multiple companies finally ceased using the word 'urban' to describe music so I guess you could say we've had less 'urban hits'. x And we had a Bring Me The Horizon top 40 hit so I guess that alone means we had more metal hits than usual. Feels like we've had quite a lot of dance hits although most of them are just remakes of old songs.

"Small independent film to be the soundtrack of the year"
Films? What are those?

"ABBA mini-mania in the first half of 2020"
Nah.

"Steps bring out an album that isn't half as amazing as Tears"
No album from them yet.

"Some sort of Queen anthology collection is released"
Nothing released from them yet.

"Shock death of an icon... Like a bona fide icon"
Kinda depends on your definition of 'bona fide icon' but we've certainly had shock deaths, as is true of pretty much any year. Naya Rivera comes to mind as a very shocking death and someone who could very easily be called an icon for certain audiences. Vera Lynn is an icon by any definition although her death probably doesn't really qualify as a shock given her age.

"A eurovision song will become a chart hit"
Eurovision? What's that? (This did happen though. x)

"Anne Marie will be back with a huge UK top 10 hit this year."
Thankfully not happened yet.

"A new british group will be massive in the US charts."
Err... Young T & Bugsey? laugh.gif

"A male singer (not british) will have a great year in the UK charts - his name starts with a 'J'"
Jason Derulo as mentioned earlier x (Jason undermined his own prediction by later saying that it wouldn't be Jason Derulo though).

"Ariana Grande will have a Drake 2019 year (flop)"
She's done pretty well.

"Scotland will leave the UK and their official chart will be so much better than the UK charts."
Still part of the UK shockingly.

"Who will sing the next James Bond film theme? Billie Eilish"
Ding ding, as I already commented on months ago.

"There will be 1 big rock song, and no more."
Not really been any properly big rock songs yet.

"What new chart rule will the OCC introduce? The right to exclude "problematic" artists from the chart."
6ix9ine had a top 10 hit.

"[The Bond theme is] more likely to be someone like Lewis Capaldi or Tom Walker this time I think."
Nope x2

"O think Gerry cinnamon will get some top75 hits and a number 1 album."
Ding ding (2 new top 75 hits to be precise).

"Probably a random choice but I really think Jorja Smith would be a perfect choice for the next Bond Theme song !"
Sadly nope but I agree that could be good. Let's pretend 'Rose Rouge' was a Bond theme or something. x

"For 2020 i would like to see the return of Paolo Nutini."
Still MIA.

"Lizzo will have a number one single in the summer."
Surprisingly we haven't had anything new from her yet. Although if this one does come true it'll probably be a song from years ago knowing her.

"Little mix will come back with a new single and it will be a hit."
Ding ding

Let's see how we've done so far as I'm bored

[snip]

In fairness 'Those Kinda Nights' was in the top 75 for 5 weeks and was just an album nominated track.

"OCC massively change up the charts in January, hopefully by introducing a streaming cap of 10:1 and scrapping ACR."
Surprisingly not really been any significant changes to OCC rules (were there even any minor changes?) even around the time they usually do midway through the year.

Soundtrack albums were moved to the compilations chart. Er, ....that's it.

Posted by: Bré Jul 17 2020, 08:51 PM

Oh yes, I forgot that happened this year, feels like longer ago than that.
