JEDWARD
Irish male vocal duo, twins Edward & John Grimes (born 16/10/91). They finished 6th in the 2009 series of The X Factor, and represented Ireland in two successive Eurovision Song Contests, coming 8th in 2011 and 19th in 2012
13 Feb 10 Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby) (Jedward featuring Vanilla Ice) 2 10 wks
31 Jul 10 All The Small Things 80 1 wk
21 May 11 Lipstick 40 2 wks
Total Hits : 3 Total Weeks : 13

Where do we start here (without being too rude?). The artist synopsis says all that's worth saying about their musical career really.

They have jointly presented a number of TV programmes and have been on a couple of "celebrity" Reality TV shows, and since the Covid-19 outbreak they have been very prominent in promoting the wearing of facemasks.

Jedward were awful!! I remember despising their presence in the live shows during XF 2009. And how they got saved instead of Lucie. drama.gif

While they are really annoying in general and two of those three charting songs are awful I'm not gonna lie 'Lipstick' was one of the few actually good songs of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest.

MARINA & THE DIAMONDS
British female singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, born Marina Diamandis, 10/10/85
13 Feb 10 Hollywood 12 15 wks
24 Apr 10 I Am Not A Robot 26 7 wks
31 Jul 10 Oh No! 38 5 wks
15 Oct 11 Radioactive 25 3 wks
28 Apr 12 Primadonna 11 14 wks
16 Feb 13 How To Be A Heartbreaker 88 1 wk
15 Nov 18 Baby (Clean Bandit featuring Marina & Luis Fonsi) 15 15 wks
Total Hits : 7 Total Weeks : 60

A Buzzjack favourite at the time, if I remember correctly.

She's come close three times to breaking the Top 10, but never quite managed it. On the albums front, her chart record is rather better with "Electra Heart" reaching number one and all four of her studio albums hitting the Top 10.

None of the singles from the last two albums have troubled the top 100, so the Clean Bandit featured credit is her only singles chart appearence for over 7 years now.

Did “Obsessions” not chart in 2009 then? I bought that on 7" vinyl.

“Radioactive” deserved to so much better than number 25. Shocking that she's not had a Top 10 hit too!

The Midnight Beast, now that is a throwback and a half laugh.gif I actually saw them live at Reading Festival one of the times I went there lol ~

The hits from Passion Pit and Danny Byrd were good stuff. And you are all lying if you say you didn't enjoy 'Lipstick' by Jedward.

ERIK HASSLE
Swedish male singer/songwriter, born 26/8/88
20 Feb 10 Hurtful 59 1 wk
Total Hits : 1 Total Weeks : 1

Who? Neither the name nor the song title evoked any memories in the depths of my brain, so if was off to Youtube to find it. It's a pleasant enough pop single, with perhaps the drum machine mixed a little bit too loud, but it's nothing you haven't heard 100 times before and most of them better songs and more proficiently performed than this.

He never even set the world alight in his native Sweden, but according to Wikipedia it made number 2 in Denmark.

He's now more of a songwriter, writing in collaboration for Zara Larsson and Christina Aguilera, and in a throwback to the previous post, one of the songs from Marina's "Love & Fear" album.

I remember BuzzJack getting carried away with itself bigging up this single a lot in 2009 ahead of its release in Feb 2010... a bit like Eva Simons' “Silly Boy” it never lived up to the hype and flopped big style.

But “No Words” is good - charted at #15 for me in 2015.

'Hurtful' is an ok song but I preferred 'Don't Bring Flowers' from him. Good memories of nighttime Radio 1 at the time.

GUCCI MANE
American male rapper (born Radric Davis, 12/2/80)
20 Feb 10 Spotlight (Gucci Mane featuring Usher) 46 2 wks
17 Nov 16 Black Beatles $ (Rae Sremmurd featuring Gucci Mane) 2 16 wks
29 Dec 16 Party (Chris Brown featuring Gucci Mane & Usher) 68 5 wks
15 Jun 17 Down (Fifth Harmony featuring Gucci Mane) 47 10 wks
27 Jul 17 Fetish (Selena Gomez featuring Gucci Mane) 33 8 wks
28 Sep 17 Curve (Gucci Mane featuring The Weeknd) 78 1 wk
12 Oct 17 Do Re Mi (Blackbear featuring Gucci Mane) 94 1 wk
27 Sep 18 Wake Up In The Sky (Gucci Mane, Bruno Mars & Kodak Black) 65 4 wks
26 Mar 20 Like That (Doja Cat featuring Gucci Mane) 62 16 wks
Total Hits : 9 Total Weeks : 63

A brief splash of chart success in 2010, but we then had to wait six and a half years to see his name in the top 40 qgain.

"Black Beatles" well and truly dominates the discography, one of six featured credits as against only three lead credits.

"Like That" had a really long run for a song that peaked so low (73-{62}-63-78-79-81-87-83-86-x(8)-85-79-85-80-77-82-91)

Longest run in the Top 100 for singles that never made the Top 60

20 weeks - Noah Cyrus "July" peaked at 66
17 weeks - Koffee "Toast" peaked at 70
16 weeks - Omariaon featuring Chris Brown and Jhené Aiko "Post To Be" peaked at 74
16 weeks - Rae Sremmurd "Guatemala" peaked at 68
16 weeks - Doja Cat featuring Gucci Mane "Like That" peaked at 62
15 weeks - Offset & Metro Boomin "Ric Flair Drip" peaked at 67
15 weeks - Not3s "Aladdin" peaked at 71
14 weeks - Bryson Tiller "Don't" peaked at 71

HELPING HAITI
International male/female charity vocal group including James Blunt, Jon Bon Jovi, Susan Boyle, Michael Bublé, Alexandra Burke, Mariah Carey, Cheryl Cole, Miley Cyrus, JLS, Leona Lewis, Joe McElderry, Mika, Kylie Minogue, James Morrison, Rod Stewart, Take That & Westlife
20 Feb 10 Everybody Hurts 1 6 wks
Total Hits : 1 Total Weeks : 6

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was truly catastrophic, with the death toll well into six figures.

There was a worldwide humanitarian relief effort, and two charity records made the UK Charts.

One was created with mainly American artists (more of that later) and there was this one, born and bred in the UK but involving a smattering of international artists.

A cover of a 1993 REM track, it went straight to No. 1, but after two weeks at the top it declined quickly and went {1}-1-9-26-42-77 and out.

It's an injustice that neither 'Froot' nor 'I'm A Ruin' gave Marina a big hit. 'Primadonna' also should have been a top 3 smash. sleep.gif

LESLIE BRICUSSE
British male composer, born 29/1/31
20 Feb 10 Pure Imagination (Anthony Newley & Leslie Bricusse) 84 3 wks
Total Hits : 1 Total Weeks : 3

I've no idea why this song, which originated in the 1971 film "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory", appeared in the Top 100 in 2010.

The movie version (where the music was composed by Bricusse and the lyrics by Newley) was sung by Gene Wilder, but a version by Newley appeared on a 2010 album called "Newley Discovered" which was made up of demos for the Wonka film plus "Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget" and "Mr Quilp"

I believe it was because it was in an advert at the time although I'm not 100% sure.

I forgot that Gucci Mane had a 'hit' as early as 2010 - although even this was quite late into his career, he's been active since the mid 00s, just took an unusually long time by rap standards to gain any attention in the UK.

International (mainly American) charity collaboration to raise funds for the victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake
27 Feb 10 We Are The World 25 For Haiti 50 1 wk

The American earthquake relief effort which was an updated cover version of the 1985 famine relief single "We Are The World" by USA for Africa

Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie already had plans to do a 25th anniversary version before the earthquake and the disaster brought things to the forefront where everything came together.

All together, 85 artists & musicians were involved, far too many to list individually but the soloists, according to Wikipedia were

Justin Bieber
Nicole Scherzinger
Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Nettles
Josh Groban
Tony Bennett
Mary J. Blige
Toni Braxton
Michael Jackson (archive footage)
Janet Jackson
Barbra Streisand
Miley Cyrus
Enrique Iglesias
Jamie Foxx
Wyclef Jean
Adam Levine
Pink
BeBe Winans
Usher
Celine Dion
Orianthi (on guitar)
Fergie
Nick Jonas
Mary Mary
Isaac Slade
Carlos Santana (on guitar)
Lil Wayne
Akon
T-Pain
LL Cool J (rap)
will.i.am (rap)
Snoop Dogg (rap)
Nipsey Hussle (rap)
Busta Rhymes (rap)
Swizz Beatz (rap)
Kid Cudi (rap)
IYAZ (rap)
Mann (rap)
Kanye West (rap)

The track made number 2 in the US Billboard chart, but barely raised a ripple over here, spending just one week at No. 50

REMADY
Swiss male producer, born Marc Würgler, 12/12/77
27 Feb 10 No Superstar 75 2 wks
Total Hits : 1 Total Weeks : 2

Also known as Player & Remady, or Remady P & R, "No Superstar" was Würgler's only foray into the UK Charts, although according to Wikipedia his next effort "Do It On My Own" with Craig David made No. 12 in France and No. 28 in his home country.

The song itself is pretty much "House By Numbers" and I suspect it didn't cross over to many other than established fans of the genre.

B.O.B.
American male rapper/songwriter/producer, born Bobby Simmons, 15/11/88
06 Mar 10 Don't Go There (Giggs featuring B.O.B.) 60 1 wk
29 May 10 Nothin' On You $ (B.O.B. featuring Bruno Mars) 1 22 wks
12 Jun 10 Airplanes (B.O.B. featuring Hayley Williams) 1 37 wks
16 Oct 10 Magic (B.O.B. featuring Rivers Cuomo) 16 18 wks
22 Jan 11 I'll Be In The Sky 61 5 wks
12 Feb 11 Price Tag ✮ (Jessie J featuring B.O.B.) 1 71 wks
15 Oct 11 Strange Clouds (B.O.B. featuring Lil Wayne) 72 2 wks
28 Apr 12 So Good 7 17 wks
19 May 12 Both Of Us (B.O.B. featuring Taylor Swift) 22 6 wks
20 Jul 13 Brokenhearted (Lawson featuring B.O.B.) 6 5 wks
30 Nov 13 Up Down (Do This All Day) (T-Pain featuring B.O.B.) 43 5 wks
Total Hits : 11 Total Weeks : 189

For someone who had three number ones (two as lead artist), he disappeared from the scene relatively quickly.

"Nothin' On You" was also the chart debut of Bruno Mars, of whom more later, but is for the sublime "Airplanes" that B.O.B. will be remembered in my book. One of the few (in my opionion) instances where a rap/singing combination REALLY works, it still sounds fantastic today.

His third and final chart topper was as a featured artist on Jessie J's "Price Tag" (again, she will feature in this series in due course) which hang around forever and sold over a million copies

He did managed a pair of Top 10s in 2013, but absolutely nothing in terms of new hits past the end of that year.

quite amazing how quickly he fizzled out, and that was still years before he made his infamous Flat Earth song and supporting other worse conspiracy theories :')

his #1s are all fairly decent anyhow, but I don't care for his other big hits 'So Good' and 'Magic'.

CHIDDY BANG
American male rap/production duo - Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege & Noah "Xaphoon Jones" Beresin. Anamege now uses the "Chiddy Bang" name himself
06 Mar 10 Opposite Of Adults 12 19 wks
29 May 10 Truth 50 1 wk
26 Feb 11 Rescue Me (You Me At Six featuring Chiddy Bang) 21 3 wks
10 Mar 12 Ray Charles 13 6 wks
Total Hits : 4 Total Weeks : 29

Contoversy abounded around here about their first chart hit, a re-working of MGMT's "Kids" which split opinion on this very website.

A featured appearence helped You Me At Six to what was their highest singles chart position at that time, but after one more top 20 appearance, Beresin left and it was The Opposite of Hello for Chiddy Bang.

B.o.B had some good songs at the time but I think his legacy is now too firmly dominated by his descent into conspiracy theories and lunacy for him to ever be able to make a serious musical comeback.

One of my hottest takes which I still 100% stand by 10 years later - 'Opposite Of Adults' is a much better song than the original 'Kids'. (Unfortunately the song in the current chart that repurposes a different MGMT song is very much the opposite). I liked 'Ray Charles' as well.
