Besides, I know if I were that close to breaking the record for most weeks at #1, I'd be doing everything I could to make it happen!

cheer.gif Mariah vanquished. It could yet spend another week or two there as well.

I'm seeing a lot of people on Reddit speculating that this might make Billboard change their rules to not allow remixes to be combined into one chart entry. I hope they don't do that, it is a rule that can be exploited to some extent clearly but it's not like people consume every new remix as if it's a totally new song.

The record has actually been broken, wow!

And it still has a lead of 1.2:1 as well.

wow, good for him

wouldn't surprise me if Billboard makes some rule change now to prevent a similar situation in the future... Drake could do it and bring a new singer for a new version every week, one week Rihanna, one week Beyonce... and would be #1 forever biggrin.gif

We live in the presence of a king gold.gif

With regards to Billboard changing rules, I'm not sure I see the motivation. We've had remixes be the sole reason songs go to #1 in the past, and we've had streaming result in runs that seem extended beyond common sense as well. But mainly keep in mind that if Lil Nas X breaking a long standing record seems significant, don't forget that for the entire 1980s, songs were almost never lasting more than 3-4 weeks at #1, and then Billboard started tracking airplay more accurately and suddenly Boyz II Men made/matched the record 3 times in the space of 3 years, with a lot of help from a passive component. "Old Town Road" just happens to have had its stars align more so than anything else ("Uptown Funk" & "Despacito" would both also be on 17 weeks if not for their successors bolting to #1 out of nowhere).

(Also it would look like Billboard are still mad about the whole Hot Country thing 5 months later, when they should be grateful at how much traffic Lil Nas X has driven).

I agree with all that
I personally give zero value to One Sweet Day being one 16 weeks when it was 100% due to airplay bought by her husband. The singles chart in the late 90s/early 00s is a joke cos no one was buying singles anymore and in the pre-download days it was all airplay.

and I know songs had had remixes with guests, but usually the 1 remix, only 1, not 1 every week like Lil Nas X... thats why I think Billboard will change the rule

anyway Ariana is coming to stop his run last #1

It's a waaaay better track than 'One Sweet Day' and 'Despacito' so I'm happy.

Well done to Lil Nas X (and Billy Ray Cyrus) for breaking the US chart record, saw it on the news this morning. It will be interesting to see how the follow up does to Old Town Road, and whether he will keep his unique country influenced trap style (I hope he does).

Actually, 'One Sweet Day' had 2,335,000 physical single sales, but I'm sure you'll claim her husband bought all of those too.

my bad, didn't know, I genuinely thought all these years that no one was buying singles in the US in the early 00s in the pre-itunes days and that it was all airplay
