CALVIN HARRIS ULTIMATE SINGLES RATE

After 25 votes it's time we found out which of Calvin Harris' tunes is the most essential. The lowest rate average was 4.12 and the highest was 9.08. How will his latest single do? Will 'We Found Love' win again? Until then let's take a look at his chart history...

DAMN. Can't believe I missed this.

If you're quick I can add your rate too, post it here. ohmy.gif

I may as well post the bottom 2 now though, they're both pretty much set in stone.

#44. Hype (with Dizzee Rascal)

Rate score: 4.12/10
Highest rate score: 9/10 (PeteFromLeeds)
Lowest rate score: 0/10 (cqmerqn, Bjork, SevenSeize)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2016
Album: N/A
UK Chart position: #34
YouTube views: 7.6m
Spotify streams: 20.9m

Finishing in dead last place is Calvin's most recent Dizzee Rascal collab 'Hype'. Released less than two months after 'This Is What You Came For', it got easily overshadowed and was largely seen as a disappointment on both artists' parts. Fair to say, it didn't attract a whole lot of... hype. Dizzee returned to grime shortly afterwards in the knowledge that he is not the chart star he once was. Calvin of course knows how to recover from a flop and following single 'My Way' instantly landed in the top five.

#43. Off The Record (with Tinchy Stryder & Burns)

Rate score: 4.79/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Dexton)
Lowest rate score: 0/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: 20th of 21

Year of release: 2011
Album: N/A
UK Chart position: #24
YouTube views: 2.1m
Spotify streams: 247k

This song has a thing for second-last place, as it once again finishes in second to last as 'Merrymaking' overtakes it. The song was a collaboration with dance producer Burns and rapper Tinchy Stryder, who was on his last legs as a chart force. It was released a month after 'We Found Love' and unsurprisingly was a big chart flop whilst that was still sitting at #1. It's one of Calvin's weaker productions for sure and not one I ever revisit.

#42. Open Wide (feat. Big Sean)

Rate score: 5.26/10
Highest rate score: 9.5/10 (Dexton)
Lowest rate score: -1/10 (Bjork)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2014
Album: Motion
UK Chart position: #23
YouTube views: 57.3m
Spotify streams: 61.8m

The lowest single where Calvin is the primary artist here is 'Open Wide', released as a promotional single a week before the album and spending two weeks in the top 40, but being broadcast for none of them because there was no suitable radio edit available. Even without listening to the song though, you can guess what the title is in reference to. It was originally released as an instrumental titled 'C.U.B.A' which was a big club success, leading Calvin to add it to 'Motion' with vocal input from Big Sean, who we'll see from again later in the countdown.

#41. Nuh Ready Nuh Ready (feat. PARTYNEXTDOOR)

Rate score: 5.37/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Stu1985)
Lowest rate score: 0/10 (cqmerqn, Jester)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2018
Album: TBA
UK Chart position: #48
YouTube views: 2.8m
Spotify streams: 9.5m

Calvin's latest single and supposedly his lead single to studio album #6 (though it's just as likely it'll be dropped from the project considering its minimal chart success) saw him team up with PARTYNEXTDOOR who previously appeared on a Funk Wav album track. The song saw him depart from the 'Funk Wav' style but it split opinion down the middle with many regarding it as one of his worst, and the general public at large not getting into it. Along with its recentness, it is not a surprise that this finishes as low as it does. Personally I like it a fair bit, but it's not up with his all time best.

#40. Merrymaking At My Place

Rate score: 5.41/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (PeteFromLeeds)
Lowest rate score: 2/10 (cqmerqn, Jack)
2014 rate position: 21st of 21

Year of release: 2007
Album: I Created Disco
UK Chart position: #43
YouTube views: 673k
Spotify streams: 2.6m

Last place when done 3.5 years ago, it now improves to starting out the top 40 with an improved rate average also. This became Calvin's third chart hit, though his first to miss the top 10 let alone the entire top 40. Personally it's one of his biggest misfires and now it just goes to show how far he's come since then, this was over 10 years ago now. Best forgotten this is.

#39. My Way

Rate score: 5.90/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (danG)
Lowest rate score: -1/10 (HarryEzra)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2016
Album: N/A
UK Chart position: #4
YouTube views: 247.7m
Spotify streams: 462.2m

Well I am disappointed but I saw it coming. This seems to be one of his lowest regarded singles, including by Calvin himself as he really only made it as a response to the Taylor Swift break up before going into Funk Wav. It was great hearing his own singing voice again though, something we see rarer as we go along his career, and it felt like a continuation of the also-brilliant 'This Is What You Came For' with its subtle drop.

#38. Rollin (feat. Future & Khalid)

Rate score: 6.10/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (danG)
Lowest rate score: 0/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2017
Album: Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1
UK Chart position: #43
YouTube views: 26.7m
Spotify streams: 172.6m

Another one of my faves dropping out. sad.gif To be fair to it though, it was only released as a promotional single and Future isn't exactly the most Buzzjack friendly artist. I just love the way it plods along though and the summery laidback production, and both featured artists add their own voice to it in the best way possible. I suppose this song will be forever underrated by the vast majority though.

#37. Holiday (Dizzee Rascal feat. Chrom3)

Rate score: 6.22/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Midge, gavindeejay, Dexton, Pete)
Lowest rate score: -1/10 (Jester)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2009
Album: Tongue 'n' Cheek
UK Chart position: #1
YouTube views: 7.7m
Spotify streams: 15.1m

Now here's our first surprise of the rate, and it's the first of Calvin's many many number ones to drop out. Dizzee isn't doing so well himself here too, but he still has 'Dance Wiv Me'. This was released in the height of Dizzee's career and in an attempt to replicate the success of DWM he enlisted Calvin on production again as well as Chrom3 to sing the chorus. It became his third consecutive #1. It's another great one from Calvin, especially the sped up bit at the end. Worth a listen every so often.

#36. Drinking From The Bottle (feat. Tinie Tempah)

Rate score: 6.33/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Midge, Josh, Jase, Dexton)
Lowest rate score: -1/10 (Dobbo)
2014 rate position: 19th of 21

Year of release: 2012
Album: 18 Months
UK Chart position: #5
YouTube views: 37.2m
Spotify streams: 80.4m

All the ones with guest rappers seem to be dropping out first (of course, it is Buzzjack) which is a shame because this is another great Calvin tune. Continuing Calvin's long run of top 5 hits this originally peaked at #17 as a promotional single before getting pushed to radio. It's a fun song about letting go and enjoying life, though Calvin's high quality in general means this isn't even one of my absolute faves of his. In a related note, the first time I heard this was when Tinie introduced this at Radio 1's Big Weekend so I would've been one of the very first to hear it.

#35. Faking It (feat. Kehlani & Lil Yachty)

Rate score: 6.46/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (BridgeCow)
Lowest rate score: 0/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2017
Album: Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1
UK Chart position: #97
YouTube views: 34.6m
Spotify streams: 46.2m

Released as his final single from Funk Wav Bounces, it was sadly a bit too late for it to become a hit, with it limping in at just #97 and faring similarly in the US. It's one of his weakest singles to date for me though so I'm not too sad about it, I do like in the context of the album and it's far from a bad song, just not single material when Calvin has 'Skrt On Me' waiting in the wings. sleep.gif

Posted by: Atonement 26th February 2018, 08:55 PM

'Open Wide' really deserved better!

So did 'Faking It', 'Rollin'' and 'Holiday' to a certain extent.

Posted by: gavindeejay 26th February 2018, 08:57 PM

Gutted to see Drinking From The Bottle our already ohmy.gif

The rest I’m not too surprised apart from maybe Holiday!

#34. The Weekend (Calvin Harris Remix) (SZA)

Rate score: 6.56/10
Highest rate score: 8.9/10 (DalekTurret32)
Lowest rate score: 0/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2017
Album: N/A
UK Chart position: #55
YouTube views: 2.8m
Spotify streams: 39.1m

Quietly released at the end of 2017, this marked the official end of Calvin's Funk Wav era as he gave SZA's US hit 'The Weekend' a 'Funk Wav' remix, which helped the song to make the lower end of the UK chart. I am liking it a fair bit at the moment, but this will go down as one of his least remembered singles so I can't moan at its position here. I honestly prefer 'Nuh Ready Nuh Ready' now, though I did rate this higher at the time. Also, is it just a coincidence that his last two singles are 'The Weekend' and 'Nuh Ready...'?

#33. You Used To Hold Me

Rate score: 6.59/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Joe, Juan Carlos)
Lowest rate score: 1/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: 11th of 21

Year of release: 2009
Album: Ready For The Weekend
UK Chart position: #27
YouTube views: 11.1m
Spotify streams: 25.5m

Released as his final single from Ready For The Weekend before going on a year and a half break, this became a minor top 40 hit for him, impressive at the time for what was his 4th single from the album (and 2nd post-album release). It's not one of his strongest looking back, as he has bettered himself multiple times since, but it hasn't aged badly either.

Posted by: danG 26th February 2018, 09:20 PM

#32. Summer

Rate score: 6.66/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Dobbo, Chez Wombat, Dexton)
Lowest rate score: 2/10 (SevenSeize, blacksquare, dandy*)
2014 rate position: 15th of 21

Year of release: 2014
Album: Motion
UK Chart position: #1
YouTube views: 1193.3m
Spotify streams: 496.0m

And surprisingly out next is only one of Calvin's biggest singles ever in 'Summer'. Released in... Spring, it became the second of a hat-trick of #1s in the UK and was huge worldwide. The song was written about his relationship with ex-girlfriend Rita Ora. Personally I think in terms of real world impact it is highly overrated, yes it is a tune but he's done far better that didn't get nearly as big, so I'm pleased at its relatively low position here.

#31. Hands (The Ting Tings)

Rate score: 6.67/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Stu1985)
Lowest rate score: 2/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2010
Album: Sounds From Nowheresville
UK Chart position: #29
YouTube views: 2.6m
Spotify streams: 6.8m

The Ting Tings had a very successful first era but despite enlisting Calvin Harris to produce lead single for their sophomore effort, it was a big chart flop, making the top 40 for just a week and they were never seen in the chart again. Their album eventually got released in 2012 and they even released a third album in 2014. It's barely noticeable that it is Calvin though, I didn't even realise until very recently, and if it were me this wouldn't even be in the top 40 here.

Posted by: Dobbo 26th February 2018, 09:53 PM

Glad to see Drinking From The Bottle out, definitely his worst ever track. Was fun initially but was SO overplayed, plus the vid was awful.

OTOH huge shame to see Summer out, such a euphoric drop! Gets way too much hate.

Elsewhere I never knew Calvin had a hand in that Ting Tings track.

Posted by: Dexton 26th February 2018, 11:26 PM

Open Wide, Rollin and Drinking From The Bottle are all tunes wtf why are they out already (Open Wide fair enough for the lyrics but it goes offfff)

Kinda happy that Summer is above My Way tbh, and Feel So Close being above those two is correct also tongue.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 27th February 2018, 07:06 AM

Truly hate 'Summer' so much. puke.gif

Posted by: BridgeCow 27th February 2018, 07:47 AM

Faking It really deserves to be higher sad.gif and ohmy.gif and Summer being out already

#30. Heatstroke (feat. Young Thug, Pharrell Williams & Ariana Grande)

Rate score: 6.71/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (SamJudd)
Lowest rate score: 3/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2017
Album: Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1
UK Chart position: #25
YouTube views: 7.9m
Spotify streams: 78.5m

Released as the second single from 'Funk Wav' this was widely seen as a disappointment and as such got overshadowed by 'Slide' which was released just a month prior. Its underuse of Pharrell and Ariana were quite annoying as Young Thug isn't that great as a rapper, but 'Feels' later made up for that. It received R1 airplay but was later quickly dropped for 'Feels'.

#29. We'll Be Coming Back (feat. Example)

Rate score: 6.85/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (cqmerqn, Dexton)
Lowest rate score: 1/10 (Jester)
2014 rate position: 18th of 21

Year of release: 2012
Album: 18 Months
UK Chart position: #2
YouTube views: 100.5m
Spotify streams: 104.0m

Released as the fifth single from '18 Months' this became his fourth from the era to make it to #2, with 'We Found Love' remaining his sole #1 from the project at the time. Featuring Example who was once very popular but now can't even get a brand new single into the top 100, it's quite standard for Calvin but that for me is still an 8/10.

Posted by: Joe. 27th February 2018, 01:28 PM

I don't think My Way is as bad as you all say it is. Summer is a bop to some degree too!

Posted by: danG 27th February 2018, 01:29 PM

#28. Let's Go (feat. Ne-Yo)

Rate score: 6.95/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Midge, Jase, SamJudd, Jester)
Lowest rate score: 2/10 (SevenSeize)
2014 rate position: 16th of 21

Year of release: 2012
Album: 18 Months
UK Chart position: #2
YouTube views: 77.3m
Spotify streams: 89.4m

Released to follow-up 'We Found Love' over 6 months later, the wait for a new single was worth it as he delivered another banger and got a big chart hit with it too (a #2 hit naturally). Another standard but solid tune.

#27. The Girls

Rate score: 6.97/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Jade, HarryEzra, SamJudd)
Lowest rate score: 2/10 (cqmerqn, Bjork)
2014 rate position: 13th of 21

Year of release: 2007
Album: I Created Disco
UK Chart position: #3
YouTube views: 8.5m
Spotify streams: 7.3m

Way back to his second ever single now, this one followed 'Acceptable' into the top 10 instantly and then became his first top 3 hit. This came back in his electro pop era which sounds vastly different to what he would go on to release. A bit novelty, but still a bop.

Posted by: Joe. 27th February 2018, 01:31 PM

The Girls was what drew me to Calvin initially, after seeing the video on TV randomly once. Still a huge bop!

Posted by: danG 27th February 2018, 01:42 PM

#26. Blame (feat. John Newman)

Rate score: 6.99/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Midge, Dobbo, Jase, Joe, Dexton)
Lowest rate score: -1/10 (cqmerqn, Chez Wombat)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2014
Album: 18 Months
UK Chart position: #1
YouTube views: 700.0m
Spotify streams: 446.7m

Released after the 'Summer' this became his third song in a row to enter straight in at #1 and also gave Sir John Newman another #1 to his large collection. Not one of my personal faves of his but I gave it a 7/10 which is near enough to its actual rate average so this is an appropriate position for it.

#25. Flashback (feat. Ayah Marar)

Rate score: 7.05/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (Juan Carlos)
Lowest rate score: 1/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: 8th of 21

Year of release: 2009
Album: Ready For The Weekend
UK Chart position: #18
YouTube views: 19.5m
Spotify streams: 23.4m

This song can now really be called a 'Flashback' as it now approaches its ninth birthday. It seems to be held in high regard by a few but mostly got scores of 6 and 7. I gave it a 6 as it's one of his singles I am least familiar with and it doesn't hold much replay value in my view.

Posted by: danG 27th February 2018, 01:52 PM

#24. Thinking About You (feat. Ayah Marar)

Rate score: 7.09/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (BridgeCow, Jack)
Lowest rate score: 4/10 (blacksquare)
2014 rate position: 9th

Year of release: 2012
Album: 18 Months
UK Chart position: #8
YouTube views: 71.2m
Spotify streams: 107.0m

The two Ayah Marar features are once again back to back but it is this that makes it on top which it should be. Released as the final single from '18 Months' it broke him the record for most top 10 hits from a single studio album until Ed Sheeran came along which was very impressive. Another great tune from him too.

#23. Eat Sleep Rave Repeat (Calvin Harris Remix) (Fatboy Slim & Riva Starr feat. Beardyman)

Rate score: 7.19/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (cqmerqn)
Lowest rate score: 2/10 (Josh)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2013
Album: N/A
UK Chart position: #3
YouTube views: 7.7m
Spotify streams: 10.0m

Marking the return to the chart for Fatboy Slim, Calvin Harris helped turn this club hit into a chart smash giving it some big room house beats. The song was a bit of a meme too which limited its shelf life but does surprisingly well for itself in this rate.

Posted by: danG 27th February 2018, 02:06 PM

#22. In My Arms (Kylie Minogue)

Rate score: 7.25/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (SamJudd, Jester)
Lowest rate score: 0/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2007
Album: X
UK Chart position: #10
YouTube views: 17.2m
Spotify streams: 5.9m

Following his successful album 'I Created Disco' he had the opportunity to produce for Kylie Minogue which resulted in this #10 hit single, one of Kylie's best.

#21. I Will Never Let You Down (Rita Ora)

Rate score: 7.30/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Midge, Jase, SamJudd, Dexton)
Lowest rate score: 0/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2014
Album: N/A
UK Chart position: #1
YouTube views: 149.8m
Spotify streams: 100.4m

Another production credit drops out now, and this one was another #1 for Rita Ora and Calvin as a producer, planned for her 2nd album before the project was scrapped due to label issues and Calvin's break-up. It is a bit too pop focused for my loving, I was hoping for something a bit more dancey, but it's not bad and it seems to be a fan favourite for Rita so it missing the top 20 comes as a bit of a surprise.

+++

Top 20 will be revealed in the next few days. Here are the songs that made it.

Acceptable In The 80s
Bounce (feat. Kelis)
Call My Name (Cheryl)
Dance Wiv Me (with Dizzee Rascal & Chrom3)
Feel So Close
Feels (feat. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry & Big Sean)
How Deep Is Your Love (with Disciples feat. Ina Wroldsen)
I Need Your Love (feat. Ellie Goulding)

Under Control (with Alesso feat. Hurts)
We Found Love (with Rihanna)
Where Have You Been (Rihanna)

Thinking About You wub.gif it really doesn’t get enough love

Posted by: Dexton 27th February 2018, 02:15 PM

A perfect top 5 for me would be:

1 Under Control
We Found Love
Sweet Nothing
How Deep Is Your Love
5 Slide

Ellie Goulding actually sounds decent with Calvin on production, but I Need Your Love is dated and much inferior to Outside

Posted by: Joe. 27th February 2018, 02:25 PM

I wouldn't rule Pray To God out of the top 5

Oh no I know, sorry it was just a train of thought!

I'd say Pray to God, How Deep is Your Love, Your Not Alone, We Found Love and Sweet Nothing for the top 5? (Not in that order). Possibly Spectrum instead of one of those...

Posted by: Juan Carlos 🌴 27th February 2018, 02:33 PM

"Flashback" is still my favourite song from him. It never gets old for me to be honest. I wish it would have done better, but I guess it was great to see in the middle of this ratedown. happy.gif

As a side note, he needs to collaborate again with Ayah Marar. The songs he has done with her ("Let Me Know", "Flashback" and "Thinking About You") are really good.

Posted by: Dexton 27th February 2018, 02:45 PM

Oh yeah that's just what I would put in my Top 5 laugh.gif Pray To God is nice but it's not something I go back to (at all) compared to his other stuff. I actually skipped over Spectrum when I did a top 5 then though, would be about equal to Sweet Nothing for me (Florence Welch is just amazing isn't she?)

Posted by: Bjork 27th February 2018, 03:09 PM

Sweet Nothing to win, best thing calvin has done, but actually not sure if the merit is on him or florence

Posted by: cqmerqn 27th February 2018, 07:02 PM

Both Ellie collabs top 20!

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 27th February 2018, 07:04 PM

'In My Arms' would have gotten my 11 obvs, but of his own stuff it has to be 'Feel So Close'. He can't top that.

Posted by: Jester 27th February 2018, 07:48 PM

I'm Not Alone to win please! (It won't).

#20. Only The Horses (Scissor Sisters)

Rate score: 7.35/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (SamJudd, Joe, dandy*)
Lowest rate score: 1.5/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2012
Album: Magic Hour
UK Chart position: #12

Spotify streams: 12.4m

Taken as the lead-off single from 'Magic Hour', it is still their most recent chart hit to date as they are yet to follow up the era. The Calvin production is not as lively as I'd have liked it to been, and that lets it down a bit here, but it was a good send off for them if indeed we'll never see them in the charts again.

#19. This Is What You Came For (feat. Rihanna)

Rate score: 7.53/10

Surprisingly we get a Rihanna collab dropping out already, and the first to face the chop is the massive 'This Is What You Came For', which became one of the defining songs of the summer of 2016 and also became his biggest ever YouTube and Spotify hit (though still behind 'We Found Love' in sales). It got a lot of love including from myself, but SevenSeize had to ruin it with a -1, though it wouldn't have made the top 10 anyway.

#18. Call My Name (Cheryl)

Rate score: 7.55/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Midge, Josh, cqmerqn, SamJudd)
Lowest rate score: 3/10 (SevenSeize, dandy*)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2012
Album: A Million Lights
UK Chart position: #1
YouTube views: 51.6m
Spotify streams: 11.0m

This was the first single Cheryl released after dropping the Cole from her stage name, and with her star status plus a full-on banging Calvin Harris production it was going to debut nowhere other than #1. It's held up rather well too in my opinion.

#17. Where Have You Been (Rihanna)

Rate score: 7.55/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Joe, Stu1985)
Lowest rate score: -1/10 (Jade)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2011
Album: Talk That Talk
UK Chart position: #6
YouTube views: 443.9m
Spotify streams: 148.6m

Another Rihanna single out and this time for 'Where Have You Been', which Calvin produced alongside Dr. Luke and Cirkut. It was released as the 4th single from 'Talk That Talk' and became the second top 10 hit of that era, with both of those having the Calvin touch. It's another great addition to his production discography and one of my favourite Rihanna songs also. Could 'We Found Love' surprise and also miss the top 10 in this rundown then?

#16. Ready For the Weekend (feat. Mary Pearce)

Rate score: 7.55/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Midge, gavindeejay, SamJudd, Dexton)
Lowest rate score: 3/10 (dandy*)
2014 rate position: 14th of 21

Year of release: 2009
Album: Ready For The Weekend
UK Chart position: #3
YouTube views: 5.5m
Spotify streams: 12.7m

Calvin got his disco glasses back on for 'Ready For the Weekend', the title track of his 2nd album, which followed his first solo #1 'I'm Not Alone'. It's a fun listen, but hasn't aged as well as a whole lot of other Calvin tracks due to its novelty nature (similar to 'The Girls').

#15. Dance Wiv Me (with Dizzee Rascal & Chrom3)

Rate score: 7.69/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Midge, SevenSeize, Jade, PeteFromLeeds)
Lowest rate score: 0/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: 10th of 21

Year of release: 2008
Album: Tongue 'n' Cheek / Ready For The Weekend
UK Chart position: #1
YouTube views: 5.8m
Spotify streams: 26.6m

Getting Calvin his first #1 as a producer and featured artist was Dizzee's massive single 'Dance Wiv Me', which saw Dizzee embrace commercial dance rap pop and do a great job of it. It's rather good but I don't consider it as a proper Calvin highlight.

#14. I Need Your Love (feat. Ellie Goulding)

Rate score: 7.80/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Midge, cqmerqn, Bjork, HarryEzra, SamJudd)
Lowest rate score: 5/10 (blacksquare, Stu1985)
2014 rate position: 17th of 21

Year of release: 2012
Album: 18 Months
UK Chart position: #4
YouTube views: 715.7m
Spotify streams: 256.2m

Released as the second post-album single following 'Drinking', this easily became another top five hit for Calvin and also gave Ellie's career a boost though she was already very popular at this point too. '18 Months' is my favourite era of his and just like nearly the rest of the album this is a standout track. It improves from its surprisingly low 17th finish from last time this was run.

#13. Under Control (with Alesso feat. Hurts)

Rate score: 7.83/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (Dexton)
Lowest rate score: 4/10 (dandy*)
2014 rate position: 12th of 21

Year of release: 2013
Album: Motion / Forever
UK Chart position: #1
YouTube views: 200.7m
Spotify streams: 222.3m

Released as the lead single from 'Motion', 'Under Control' made its way to the top of the chart but thanks to perfect timing of the release more than anything. Nonetheless it's another great banger from Calvin, also helped by Alesso's trademark progressive house style, way before he sold out to tropical pop. It also gave Hurts an unexpected hit 3 years after their only other top 40 chart hit 'Wonderful Life'.

#12. Slide (feat. Frank Ocean & Migos)

Rate score: 7.95/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (blacksquare)
Lowest rate score: 0/10 (Jase)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2017
Album: Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1
UK Chart position: #10
YouTube views: 61.7m
Spotify streams: 458.7m

The first single taken from 'Funk Wav' proved very divisive at first, with Calvin unexpectedly changing sound for a more R&B flavour, but it grew on most of us and it's become one of my favourites of his. Giving us the R&B/rap/dance crossover that I never knew I wanted, it remains a highlight from the 'Funk Wav' era. For someone who's never excited me Frank Ocean does well on this and the Migos raps work brilliantly for it too. #12 is a pleasing position for this here given how the other rap ones have done.

#11. Bounce (feat. Kelis)

Rate score: 7.97/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (danG)
Lowest rate score: 5/10 (Bjork)
2014 rate position: 6th of 21

Year of release: 2011
Album: 18 Months
UK Chart position: #2
YouTube views: 48.0m
Spotify streams: 71.9m

This ended the Calvin drought and brought him back better than ever, with the first single off '18 Months'. With guest vocals from Kelis, Calvin put the entire focus on his production for the first time, and really, what a song is this. It's upbeat all throughout and is uniquely Calvin, and for that it remains my favourite of his to date. Definitely deserving of the comment "proper banger". Sadly it just misses the top 10 here though #10 is in front by a good amount.

Another Ellie collab is still to come, so I'd say not tongue.gif It's the right decision for me, I Need Your Love got totally killed by overplay and Outside still sounds pretty fresh.

Summer is way too low, it's generic but it was perfect for the time of year and is one of my favourites from him. Let's Go & Under Control I hold in similar high regard, despite it's completely throwaway nature, I feel like he does generic breakdowns a bit better than his peers.

And darn, Bounce was one of my uni anthems (though Feel So Close more so).

Posted by: Dobbo 1st March 2018, 08:12 PM

The only song I love in that top 10 is How Deep Is Your Love. Big fan of Acceptable & Outside too but the rest can give or take.

Posted by: gavindeejay 1st March 2018, 08:33 PM

A few surprises here I have to say! Scissor sisters in the Top 20 being one of them and INYL missing the Top 10. I hope it’s not going to be a predictable WFL at the Top!

NO UNDER CONTROL

Seriously though Under Control, Slide, AND Bounce all out in one go, and not even Top 10? cry.gif At least they’re above I Need Your Love.

'The Girls' deserved so much more! sad.gif for being a tune of life and soundtracking that iconic Eastenders Ronnie and Roxy advert x

Pleasantly surprised to see 'Slide' as high as #12 when lots of his tracks with featured male vocalists seemed to be dropping like flies. My favourite chart hit of last year wub.gif now a top 3 that includes 'Acceptable In The 80s', 'I'm Not Alone' and 'How Deep Is Your Love' would be perfection.

#10. Outside (feat. Ellie Goulding)

Rate score: 8.12/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (cqmerqn)
Lowest rate score: 5/10 (blacksquare)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2014
Album: Motion
UK Chart position: #6
YouTube views: 483.7m
Spotify streams: 412.8m

Starting out the top ten is 'Outside' which instantly smashed in at #6 upon the release of the album due to Ellie's high profile and it being chosen as the next single. I thought INYL would be more well regarded but it is this which becomes the only Ellie collab to make the top ten here.

#09. How Deep Is Your Love (with Disciples feat. Ina Wroldsen)

Rate score: 8.57/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (Dobbo)
Lowest rate score: 0/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2015
Album: N/A
UK Chart position: #2
YouTube views: 1297.0m
Spotify streams: 546.7m

Following the 'Motion' era Calvin prepared this summer anthem with Disciples and an officially uncredited Ina Wroldsen, which became one of his biggest hits to date, spending 12 weeks in the UK top ten but just missing out on #1. It's very well regarded on this forum on the whole but cqmerqn's 0/10 pushes this down from what would have been 5th to 9th. It saw Calvin take influence from deep house but making it his own and it is one of his top tunes in my opinion.

Posted by: danG 7th March 2018, 12:02 PM

#08. Feels (feat. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry & Big Sean)

Rate score: 8.59/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (SamJudd)
Lowest rate score: 6/10 (PeteFromLeeds)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2017
Album: Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1
UK Chart position: #1
YouTube views: 395.4m
Spotify streams: 462.4m

The highest and only single taken from 'Funk Wav' in the top ten unsurprisingly is Calvin's biggest hit from the project, 'Feels'. It saw him work with Katy Perry for the first time and was the perfect laidback chilled groovy song for the summer. After a few flops it was great to see that Calvin still had it in him to produce a big chart hit, although its UK #1 peak is completely artificial to its credit it did spend nine weeks in the top ten.

#07. Acceptable In The 80s

Rate score: 8.60/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (SevenSeize, Jade, PeteFromLeeds)
Lowest rate score: 2/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: 5th of 21

Year of release: 2007
Album: I Created Disco
UK Chart position: #10
YouTube views: 11.1m
Spotify streams: 15.5m

Now here's where it gets interesting to compare with the 2014 rate, as only one song in the top seven was released following that rate so seemingly we've all decided Calvin's peak was sometime around the early 2010s. This is one of two in the top ten to have been released prior though, and 'Acceptable' was actually his chart debut (charting at #10), and being 20 positions ahead of 'The Girls' it is undeniably the best single from 'I Created Disco' in the collective Buzzjack opinion. It slips two places to #7 this time around but that's still going when this is (sadly) rather forgotten in his discography now.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 7th March 2018, 12:10 PM

'Outside' really boils my piss, and I probably wouldn't have 'Feels' so high either.

Wish I hadn't missed voting in this!

#06. Sweet Nothing (feat. Florence Welch)

Rate score: 8.84/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (BridgeCow, Josh, Jase, Bjork, HarryEzra)
Lowest rate score: 2/10 (Chez Wombat)
2014 rate position: 7th of 21

Year of release: 2012
Album: 18 Months
UK Chart position: #1
YouTube views: 243.2m
Spotify streams: 216.4m

Taken from '18 Months' this became the second song of the era to make #1 following 'We Found Love' and it also served as a follow-up to Florence's 'Spectrum' which was aided by the Calvin remix to #1. Both those songs are yet to come, for now this improves from 2014 when it finished in 7th, helped by five sets of 11/10, the most of any song in the rate.

#05. Feel So Close

Rate score: 8.90/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (gavindeejay)
Lowest rate score: 4/10 (Dobbo)
2014 rate position: 2nd of 21

Year of release: 2011
Album: 18 Months
UK Chart position: #2
YouTube views: 192.3m
Spotify streams: 226.5m

Starting the top five then is 'Feel So Close', released as the 2nd single from '18 Months' and being one of the few on the project to feature Calvin's own vocals. It finished in 2nd in 2014 so it seems this has grown off Buzzjack users a bit, but it's still a strong song of his. It was also his first solo hit to break in the US.

Top four then are:

It is a shame that 'Acceptable In The 80s' didn't quite crack the top 5 again but an 8.6 average is nothing to be sniffed at!

'I'm Not Alone' has to win this now 🙏 (fully expecting 'We Found Love' or 'Pray To God' though)

'Feel So Close' should have won, but a very decent top 5.

#04. Spectrum (Say My Name) (Calvin Harris Remix) (Florence + The Machine)

Rate score: 8.99/10
Highest rate score: 10/10 (Midge, BridgeCow, Josh, Jase, gavindeejay, HarryEzra, SamJudd, Chez Wombat, Joe, Dexton, Stu1985, Juan Carlos, dandy*, Jester)
Lowest rate score: 4/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: 4th of 21

Year of release: 2012
Album: Ceremonials
UK Chart position: #1
YouTube views: 23.2m
Spotify streams: 81.5m

Taken as the fourth single from 'Ceremonials', Calvin Harris gave this a remix which shot it from outside the chart to #1 upon its release where it stayed for three weeks. Calvin opted to not include this on '18 Months' despite its big success however. It nearly got a rate average of 9/10 and it is the only song in the top ten with no scores of 11/10, though it did get 14 10/10s as well as a 9.8/10 (I've opted to allow DalekTurret's unique ratings) and a few 8s and 9s (I gave it a 9/10 myself). It took what was a standard Florence track and really gave life to it, and so unsurprisingly it keeps its #4 position from the 2014 rate.

#03. Pray To God (feat. HAIM)

Rate score: 9.00/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (Joe, dandy*)
Lowest rate score: 3/10 (cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: N/A

Year of release: 2014
Album: Motion
UK Chart position: #35
YouTube views: 67.6m
Spotify streams: 85.0m

Receiving a rate average of exactly 9/10, 'Pray To God' is deemed the best single taken from 'Motion', and is the only new addition to the top five as of the 2014 rate. Instantly a fan favourite upon the album's release, it got a single push in early 2015 but only managed to get to #35 where it stayed for two weeks, thus bringing the era to an abrupt end. It is a unique addition to Calvin's discography, with it featuring a more ~indie act and it not relying on a generic breakdown. It's not in my Calvin top three personally, though I still gave it a 10/10 and it is deserving of the high position here.

The top two therefore consists of 'I'm Not Alone' and 'We Found Love', and there is less than 0.01 between them so it's anyone's guess.

Posted by: danG 7th March 2018, 01:17 PM

Before we get to the top 2 let's take a look at the forum's biggest Calvin Harris fans...

and it's Midge who gave the highest average score with 8.95(!)/10. Five of you gave an average of over 8/10, as for me I was a bit more conservative and had an average of just below 8/10. Most of you gave between 7-8/10 and a small handful gave an average of below 6/10.

1 8.95 Midge
2 8.84 Dexton
3 8.70 DalekTurret32
4 8.27 gavindeejay

I'm Not Alone is the only good song in that top 5. the rest are all average or ridiculously overrated.

#02. We Found Love (with Rihanna)

Rate score: 9.07/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (Stu1985)
Lowest rate score: 6/10 (Dobbo, Dircadirca)
2014 rate position: 1st of 21

Year of release: 2011
Album: Talk That Talk / 18 Months
UK Chart position: #1
YouTube views: 836.4m
Spotify streams: 402.6m

This served as the lead single from Rihanna's 6th studio album 'Talk That Talk', though was also added onto '18 Months' following its huge success, and is also credited with bringing Calvin Harris to a worldwide audience. Upon its release it of course entered the UK chart straight in at #1 where it stayed for six non-consecutive weeks, with it remaining in the top ten for 14 weeks, and it remains Calvin's biggest selling single to date. It may have been overplayed but it truly is an outstanding song in both artists' discographies, and it is as much a Calvin single as it is Rihanna's with his production shining through and leading to a banging anthemic drop which inspired countless others in the genre. Last time the rate was run this was deemed Calvin's best single, but this time around it has lost out to...

#01. I'm Not Alone

Rate score: 9.08/10
Highest rate score: 11/10 (Chez Wombat, Jester)
Lowest rate score: 5/10 (Josh, cqmerqn)
2014 rate position: 3rd of 21

Year of release: 2009
Album: Ready For The Weekend
UK Chart position: #1
YouTube views: 15.0m
Spotify streams: 21.6m

And the winner of the rate is 'I'm Not Alone'! Taken as the first single from 'Ready For The Weekend', of course. Another of his most outstanding songs, this saw Calvin drop the disco influences (until bringing them back for the follow-up) and instead go for something more trancey and euphoric. It became his second UK #1 single and first as a lead, where it entered and stayed there for two weeks. I prefer 'We Found Love' myself but it is great to see a Calvin lead single at the top of the leaderboard and one that has truly stood the test of time, with its 10th birthday soon around the corner. As much as I love the new Calvin it is a shame that we'll probably never get something like this again from him as it is rather brilliant. Alongside its two 11/10s, it got thirteen 10/10s, and only three people rated it less than 8/10 (let me name and shame Dobbo for his 7/10 alongside the two 5/10s). In 2014 it finished in third, so improves by two positions.

Perfect winner, it's still easily his signature song in my view even if it was outsold by most things that came after, and would be a perfect top 10 if it weren't for the very overrated Sweet Nothing. Spectrum was incredible, this...was anything but.

Thanks for hosting Dan!

Omg, i love Calvin so why am I last laugh.gif

I suppose it's a worthy enough winner.

pretty unexpected results, really thought Sweet Nothing could win it, bit of a travesty it didn't even make the top 5, when Spectrum made it, the original unremixed spectrum is not that different :/
also disappointed How deep is your love isn't higher, should have been t5 too

on the positive side, glad the Haim collab made tp 3

for me the ideal t5 would have bee
1 Sweet nothing
2 I need your love
3 Pray to God or How deep is your love

oh just realised we didn't include John Newman's ole, that was Calvin produced too
although everybdy probably wants to forget it ever existed wink.gif

Really pleased to see one of Calvin’s own songs win rather than a feature.

Great winner! smile.gif

I only wanted to include songs that were hits of any kind. tongue.gif Olé didn't even reach the top 100.

An unexpected win! ohmy.gif Although still deserving dance.gif Thanks for hosting dan!

Oh my goodness, shocked at "I'm Not Alone" winning but it's well deserved! It really put him on the map wub.gif

Also not surprised that Dexton & myself posted a similar average rating for him laugh.gif

I wonder what the results would look like without cqmerqn's votes; so many polarising scores that I'd think it skews the results somewhat (a bit) in favour of his favourite ones (featuring Ellie Goulding).

Thanks for hosting Dan, excellent stuff!

Interestingly, if cqmerqn didn't vote 'Pray To God' tied with 'I'm Not Alone' for points (9.25/10) though INA would win on tiebreak. 'We Found Love' down to #4 behind 'Spectrum' and 'Sweet Nothing' finishing off the top five. The two Ellie songs down from 10th/14th to 12th/15th so not much of a difference in that respect. 'Slide' would have made the top ten over 'Outside'. But of course the results would look slightly different for any one person who voted with how close things got.

A little late on this, but it's great to see that "I'm Not Alone" won this. The Ready for the Weekend era is my favourite from him. <3

Thanks for hosting Dan! happy.gif
