See also: Most weeks at each peak position in the UK Singles Chart

Many long running non-movers in this list have stemmed from these situations. Seemingly, in both 1972 and 1973, there was an additional week where positions 41-50 were held over from the previous week’s chart, meaning that the same song was at each position 41-50 for at least 3 consecutive weeks. (Similarly, in 1954, the whole top 20 was apparently repeated into a third week). This post has been edited by jimwatts: Dec 30 2023, 12:19 AM |

Thanks for doing this! You're welcome, I enjoyed compiling it It was neat timing that after several months of doing so, the week I posted it there was a new addition to the top 5 for the first time since 1991! As expected though, Anne-Marie's '2002' hasn't managed an unprecedented 6th consecutive week at #3, so I've removed the footnote against it and, unless anything extraordinary happens beforehand, I'll update the list again shortly after Christmas. |

500 views - whoop whoop! And only about 5 of them were me Merry Christmas to all viewers, especially to anyone who keeps coming back to this page.
I’ve updated to add the two new additions for the last 6 months of 2018 (it's impossible for there to be any next week), and also to add positions 41-50 from the introduction of the Top 50 in 1960 up until the end of 1982 (after which the chart became a Top 100). In preparing the latter, I spotted several omissions across the 1960s and 1970s from my original post for some of the Top 40 positions (including one at each of positions 5 and 6, oops) which I’ve added to this update. Despite missing these first time around, none of the longest stays I originally posted at any position have been broken as a result, though we can now see a whopping 17 songs tied on 3 consecutive weeks at number 14, for example. I will aim to complete the infill of positions 41-50 between 1983 and 2009 and then expand this post to cover the whole top 100 by the end of 2019. In the meantime, any further additions or amendments are gladly welcomed as mentioned above. |

An interesting read - didn't Jona Lewie peaked at 2 overall?
Interesting that Jimmy Boyd was at 8 for that long and in that 1953 chart there were 3 versions of I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus in the chart - others by The Beverley Sisters & Billy Cotton! |

^ Yes in the 1950s it was common for there to be multiple versions of the same song by different artists in the chart simultaneously - that's one thing I learnt when compiling this!
Stop The Cavalry definitely peaked at #3. However I have made one final tweak to the list this year, as of yesterday the Jackson 5's version of SCICTT no longer peaked at #43! |

Yeh certain song writers mainly Gene Auty wrote a lot of Xmas songs that would become staples between 1930-50 and passed them into different artists including Frank Sinatra, Bing, Nat!

Interesting list, thanks for this!
Would it be possible to add a * (or something like that) to denote which ones peaked at that position? |

Updated for 2019 to date and to fill in the gaps for 41-50, so now the entire history of the Top 50 is covered. The rest of the Top 100 (where 3 weeks +) should come later this year.

Is 'For The Good Times' by Perry Como the only record to appear on this list more than once?
QUOTE Footnote: Up until 1983, the last chart of the year was usually a repeat of the chart from the week before, rather than being freshly compiled from that week’s sales, with the effect that every song in the chart would be a non-mover. For the charts dated 06/01/73, 22/12/73, 29/12/73 (a repeat of the chart from 22/12/73) and 07/01/78 only a top 30 was compiled. The charts for those weeks in the OCC chart archive are top 50s but positions 31-50 in those charts are "retro compiled". The chart archive at the OCC website for charts prior to February 1994 was purchased from, I believe, the owner of the chartarchive.org website and the compiler of the archive simply retro-compiled positions 31-50 to keep his database at a constant top 50. From what I can see the criteria was: for numbers 31 to 50 "this week" include everything that was inside the top 50 the previous week that isn't inside the current top 30 and list them in numerical order 31-50 based on where they were "last week". Assuming this rule is correct then the charts for 06/01/73 and 07/01/78 contain errors: on the chart dated 06/01/73 The Strawbs should be at number 31 (they were at number 21 the previous week) and so everything listed from 31-50 needs to move down one place and for the chart dated 07/01/78 numbers 45 and 46 are the wrong way around https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singl.../19721231/7501/ https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singl.../19780101/7501/ This post has been edited by Robbie: Jul 28 2019, 03:41 PM |

^ On your first point, Jeff Beck's Hi-Ho Silver Lining also appears twice (but from two different chart runs, 5 years apart).
Edit: The Greatest Show also appears twice. Interesting point about the retro-compiled charts and your theory makes sense. I'm inclined to stick with what's on the OCC website for these lists - heaven forbid they might have made mistakes - but if they did change their data for these few charts in future, the main impact here would be a downgrading of the record stay at #41 from 4 weeks to 3, which several songs would then share with the Judge Dread song. Though I'll pass on going back through chart history to find them all This post has been edited by jimwatts: Aug 1 2019, 07:10 AM |

I've updated the list above and it now covers each position in the whole Top 100 where the record is 3 weeks or more. Enjoy

Since I last added to this thread: Yummy (at #13) and My Head & My Heart and Montero (both at #19) bring to 21 the number of songs to spend at least 4 weeks in a row at any Top 40 position outside the Top 10 - the only one not listed here is Elbow Bones and The Racketeers - A Night In New York which had 4 weeks on the spin at its peak of #33 in 1984. There may or may not be a 22nd tomorrow. Only 10 Top 100 positions remain where no song has yet had at least 3 weeks, with #67 and #77 claimed earlier this year.
