Chart Commentary

In a four-way battle for #1 this week, Harry Styles loses his crown and drops to #4, despite being comfortable ahead of everything else still. This leaves three spots for new tracks to fill, and leading the way, ahead of chart heavyweights Shawn Mendes and Charlie Puth, is a #1 debut from We the Kings. I expect many of you won't have heard of We the Kings before, but they're an American pop/rock band, fronted by Travis Clark. The credit for Sad Song is quite complicated, because I've been listening to two separate versions. The bulk of the plays come from the RJ Remix, which I linked in the above post, which features Olivia Holt. The album version however has been getting some plays too, and that features Elena Coats, so both of Elena and Olivia have been credited. It's the first #1 single for all three artists, and the first chart appearance overall for Elana. We the Kings previously made my top 20 at the end of 2015 with album track I Like It, while Olivia made her chart debut just last week, with MYBADD on the track Party On a Weekday, which has dropped out this week.

We the Kings

2017 01 Sad Song (We the Kings feat. Elena Coats or Olivia Holt) | FEAT | 1-... (1+ weeks)

Just losing out on the top spot is Shawn Mendes, who jumps up five places to #2 in his first full week with There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back. Shawn's previously achieved three #1 singles, his first being in 2014 with The Vamps on Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart), before both Stitches and Treat You Better topped my chart in 2016. Shawn brings his tally of top 10 hits to seven, all of which have made the top 5.

Shawn Mendes

2017 02 There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back | 3 | 7-2-... (2+ weeks)

This week's highest climber is from Charlie Puth, who jumps 12 places to #3 to score his fifth top 10 hit. Attention is his second highest charting single, now only trailing Selena Gomez collaboration We Don't Talk Anymore, which made #1 for two weeks at the start of 2016. His last top 10 hit came at the end of 2016, as Oops with Little Mix made it to #7 without actually being an official single.

Charlie Puth
2015 38 See You Again (Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth) | FEAT | 38-X (1 week)
2015 15 Marvin Gaye (feat. Meghan Trainor) | 1 | 40-33-35-30-37-26-21-15-21-28-35-30-40-X-34-X (14 non-consecutive weeks)

The final new entry in this week's top 10 comes from Dua Lipa, who scores her fifth top 10 hit and first since Scared to Be Lonely, which departs this week. Lost in Your Light features Miguel, who scores his fourth chart hit, and second top 10 after #Beautiful with Mariah Carey, which also made #9 and is interestingly my longest running #9 hit.

Dua Lipa
2015 05 Be the One | 2/6 | 5-6-17-25-40-X-33-X-35-20-18-23-30-X (11 non-consecutive weeks)

2017 09 Lost in Your Light (Dua Lipa feat. Miguel) | FEAT | 9-... (1+ weeks)

Elsewhere this week, we see the return of MØ, who just missed out on her seventh top 10 with Nights With You as it debuts at #14. There are also new entries from Paramore and Chase Atlantic, as well as new releases from The Vamps & Martin Jensen, Kygo & Ellie Goulding and Katy Perry featuring Migos which I will talk about next week in more detail! Making their chart debuts this week, alongside Elena Coats, are Luis Fonsi, and both Perttu and Yates whose song Good Good enters at #37.

Hi Joseph

long comment incoming as there's lots of new entries!

I really thought Shawn Mendes would be #1 here ohmy.gif I guess there is something holdin' him back basil.gif I'm actually liking the song too.
Dua's new one is very disappointing, I really can't see it becoming a top 40 hit which means the album will probably get pushed back again.
Was hoping The Vamps would go tropical house considering Martin Jensen's involvement so disappointed in that too.
Not fussed about MØ's single, shame really as 'Final Song' proves she can do better.
Really like Kygo's new song dance.gif hopefully it's another big hit.
Bon Floppétit :') I quite like it myself though, shame it's doing so badly.
Despacito is a bit of a jam though I prefer it without Justin Bieber.
Surprised to see Perttu make your top 40, thought I was the only one keeping tabs on him. 'Good Good' did make my top 100 a while back.
Quite like the new Paramore, good to hear them go more indie-pop but not in a sell-outy way.

good chart.

Hey Joseph!

2. Shawn Mendes - There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back - 7-2-
3. Charlie Puth - Attention - 15-3- ** HIGHEST CLIMBER ** This is growing on me now. Still not my favourite (that's WDTA) but I am liking it and I hope it becomes a hit. I expect radio will be on board soon!
4. Harry Styles - Sign of the Times - 1-1-1-4-
5. Lady Gaga - The Cure - 3-5- I think I'm actually over this now lol. I'm really not surprised R1 are done with her, despite the fact this is much better than her recent output.
7. Cheat Codes feat. Demi Lovato - No Promises - 1-2-2-4-7-
8. The Tide - Put the Cuffs On Me - 28-4-6-5-8-
9. Dua Lipa feat. Miguel - Lost in Your Light - 9- Sounding like her weakest single so far for me, although I still have relatively high hopes for the album.
11. Jason Derulo feat. Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign - Swalla - 32-3-8-11-
12. The Vamps & Martin Jensen - Middle of the Night - 12- I think this is my favourite of all their singles with the word Night in the title dance.gif
14. MØ - Nights With You - 14- Final Song showed so much promise but nothing since then has really lived up to that for me sad.gif
15. Martin Solveig feat. Ina Wroldsen - Places - 31-40-X-10-15-
16. Anne-Marie - Ciao Adios - 5-2-5-6-5-7-4-8-9-11-14-16-
17. Clean Bandit feat. Zara Larsson - Symphony - 18-3-1-3-5-7-12-17-
18. Louisa Johnson - Best Behaviour - 17-1-2-4-6-10-13-18-
20. Kygo & Ellie Goulding - First Time - 20- Not a bad song as such but definitely on the weak side for Kygo, especially considering Ellie's on it!
22. Rag'n'Bone Man - Skin - 22-31-19-18-14-22-32-X-8-14-19-22-
26. JP Cooper - Passport Home - 9-18-26-
27. Katy Perry feat. Migos - Bon Appétit - 27- Not really sure what to make of this. It's clearly not the best thing she's ever released but I'm shocked at just how badly it's been received. The chorus is definitely a bit of an earworm, although the lyrics are pretty bad unsure.gif
28. Julia Michaels - Issues - 25-39-X-35-27-17-15-20-28-
31. Anton Powers & Pixie Lott - Baby - 21-16-22-31-
32. Little Mix feat. Machine Gun Kelly - No More Sad Songs - 12-21-28-32-20-17-23-32-
34. Martin Jensen - Solo Dance - 35-22-19-26-34-
35. The Beach - Bite My Tongue - 12-18-31-36-40-10-8-11-10-11-16-19-27-31-35- ** LONGEST RUNNER **
36. Kygo & Selena Gomez - It Ain't Me - 11-3-4-6-9-13-18-24-29-32-36-
38. Paramore - Hard Times - 38- Really like this, they definitely stand out in their genre! Still Into You remains an absolute classic wub.gif

Excellent stuff as always biggrin.gif

Hi Joseph

long comment incoming as there's lots of new entries!

Quite like the new Paramore, good to hear them go more indie-pop but not in a sell-outy way.

good chart.

Hey Dan, thanks for all the comments biggrin.gif

I was convinced it'd be an easy #1 for Shawn too actually but I really can't get enough of Sad Song wub.gif perhaps makes a bit more sense now the BJSC semis are up kink.gif
Sadly it does seem like Lost in Your Light will be Dua's So Good, although I hope they don't push the album back, think that would ultimately do it more harm than good tbh!
Everyone seems to think MØ has underwhelmed since Final Song and I can't really argue, even if I have enjoyed Drum and Nights With You.
I stumbled across Good Good by chance really, it's in for a big climb in my next chart!

Hey Joseph!

3. Charlie Puth - Attention - 15-3- ** HIGHEST CLIMBER ** This is growing on me now. Still not my favourite (that's WDTA) but I am liking it and I hope it becomes a hit. I expect radio will be on board soon!
5. Lady Gaga - The Cure - 3-5- I think I'm actually over this now lol. I'm really not surprised R1 are done with her, despite the fact this is much better than her recent output.
9. Dua Lipa feat. Miguel - Lost in Your Light - 9- Sounding like her weakest single so far for me, although I still have relatively high hopes for the album.
12. The Vamps & Martin Jensen - Middle of the Night - 12- I think this is my favourite of all their singles with the word Night in the title dance.gif
14. MØ - Nights With You - 14- Final Song showed so much promise but nothing since then has really lived up to that for me sad.gif
20. Kygo & Ellie Goulding - First Time - 20- Not a bad song as such but definitely on the weak side for Kygo, especially considering Ellie's on it!
38. Paramore - Hard Times - 38- Really like this, they definitely stand out in their genre! Still Into You remains an absolute classic wub.gif

Excellent stuff as always biggrin.gif

Hey Mango, thanks for commenting! biggrin.gif

3. Glad it's growing on you! WDTA is still my favourite also but I do really like this, think it could be second actually. Seems like it'll be a big hit for him ohmy.gif
5. Oh really? I'm still into it, whereas with Perfect Illusion I was definitely over it by this point! Shame R1 aren't on board, does seem like they've washed their hands of her now, huge shame.
9. I prefer it to New Love and Last Dance but it's definitely less good than her chart hits.
20. It's not as good as my holy Kygo trinity of Firestone, Stay and It Ain't Me but I don't think it'd be far behind actually, I love Ellie's vocals on it too!
27. The lyrics aren't great but it's super catchy and I really hoped it'd do a bit better than it has sad.gif
38. Still Into You is my fave wub.gif
